This is a small, neighborhood, no frills kind of place but that's cool. If they continue to serve great coffee, great sandwiches and pastries plus provide speedy and polite service , they'll be just fine. On top of all that, they have free wi-fi! Stop by and get a black bean spinach wrap and a cup of the Ecuadoran. It's good stuff!
Review Source:I came here to do work but the place is too damn loud. Their espresso machine makes too much noise and the barista hits it or something every few minutes making it really hard to concentrate on my reading.
Also the frequent visits by loud and obnoxious coppers didn't help my concentration.
WiFi is fast enough, even though it had a few disconnections. Cappuccino with soy milk is tasty! But I don't think I'll come back here to do work again.
I love the cozy atmosphere at Bridgeport Coffee. The walls are decorated with Chicago Bridgeport history and it is a perfect place to sit and do work - free wifi, not too crowded or noisy, but never empty.
The coffee is wonderfully made, and the service is great. Also their sandwiches are really good, but I wish they had a better selection of pastries.
Bottom line: Bridgeport Coffee Company is always a good choice.
Really happy to have found a small, charming cafe on the south side! Â With that said though, maybe I went in with higher expectations after reading all of the other reviews. Â Don't get me wrong, it is a very trendy place that offers plenty of tables for studying and anthropologie-like decor, I just didn't fall in love with it.
The coffee was so-so and the bagel was okay. Â There was just a lot of futzing around before I received them. Â A lot of other posts talk about the noise level. Â To be clear, I've been there on a Saturday morning once and another morning mid-week. Â The customers were pretty quiet when I was there, it was just the staff that was very loud. Â I still was able to study and go about my business though. Â Both times I've been there, the staff has talked about the soup and "Oh, will somebody put the soup on," or "The soup's ready." Â I guess I will have to try the soup next time?
This is one of my favorite coffee shops in Chicago. Three of the rooms are reliably silent, making them good places to get work done. I rarely leave Hyde Park, but when I do, it's usually to come here.
My only suggestion is that they get better Wifi, or perhaps a better Internet connection. It's reliable, but it's too slow.
I heard about this place when I was at Whole Foods and they had a representative there demoing some of their coffee. Guy was really cool so I bought a bag. Â Brought it home and it was some of the best coffee I have made.
After trying the home brew I wanted to make my way from the South Loop over to their coffee shop and see how it is done by a professional. Â
Service: Super Friendly.
The girls that work here are friendly and always smiling. Â When I ordered a pour over the one girl asked what kind of coffee. Â I said whatever you think will work best. Â She asked if I like "Medium Blend" I said yes and she suggested the "El Salvadorian...", I at least remembered the country.
Never had a cup of Coffee this good:
Took about 5-8 minutes or so which is normal. Â I have only had one other cup of coffee that was close and that was at Intelligentsia. Â I use a pour over at home and I don't know what I am doing wrong but it doesn't come close to the cup I had here. Â Great selection. Â Great job!!!!!!
I also ordered a bagel to go with the coffee. Â Most coffee shop will just start making the bagel right away no matter what else you order with it. Â The other employee timed it perfectly so the bagel was done right when the coffee was finished so I had a hot bagel with my hot coffee. Â Love that.
Bottom Line: Â
Although there are some decent coffee shops around my place I will drive the 2.9 miles to Bridgeport to get my delicious coffee and friendly service.
Best Coffeehouse in Chicago.
Always perfectly smooth and never bitter or burnt.
I could not get enough of their iced soy lattes or coffees over the summer, and now I buy their roasts to make at home.
I used to buy my coffee at Whole Foods from their house selection, but the coffee from Bridgeport is noticeably and significantly higher quality. It is worth the extra two dollars per pound, and undoubtedly worth  six or seven dollars more per pound from the really bad stuff.
If you're in Bridgeport--go here. If you're in a grocery store buying coffee--buy theirs.
Very good coffee! Â A limited variety of muffins and scones and cookies are available.
The grilled vegetables as a sandwich on the whole wheat bread with fruit instead of chips is my favorite lunch.
The staff is friendly and efficient.
The decor is simple
We prefer to sit in the front room.
Free wifi is available and parking on the street is easy during the day.
I love coming here on weekends to grab a coffee and a pastry in the morning, read up of the morning news, and maybe enjoy a book while I caffeinate away. Â Between having some of the best coffee in the city which they roast themselves, the free WiFi, and talented staff make this place a rare gem of in a world of corporate, over-priced, burnt bean coffee.
Review Source:Very cute cafe. It can get a little loud and the wait staff can be a little useless but the Mexican hot chocolate recommendation I read on Yelp was on point! It was simply delicious. I was tempted to order another but instead I will simply go out of my way and return whenever I have a future craving. I highly recommend it!
Review Source:I really like this neighborhood coffee shop. Â Came here for breakfast last and was impressed with the variety of breakfast items they offer. Â I was happy to see that they offer oatmeal, I went with a breakfast sandwich instead and very happy I did.
The breakfast bagel sanwich was delicious. Â Choose from 5 different bagel flavors, 3 choices of meat, 5 varieties of cheese and a few different topping. Â The whole grain bacon cheddar sandwich was very tasty. Â I'm not a coffee drinker but they do serve a wonderful iced tea. Â I also took home a cheesecake brownie and it was one of the best brownies I have ever had.
The store is small, clean and the staff is very friendly. Â Can't wait to go back for oatmeal and another brownie.
A few years ago I wrote a review of Bridgeport Coffee on Metromix because I was sitting in a conference room full of coffee and the smell was magic! Â Metromix eventually deleted all of their reviews, including mine. Â It was very upsetting. Â Bridgeport Coffee, however, is still great! Â
We had ordered a couple hundred bags of coffee for customer gifts. Â Bridgeport Coffee was easy to work with, and made us great custom labels with our company logo. Â They even did some specifically for some of our bigger clients. Â The service was great. Â We had the coffee within days of ordering it. Â
I like to go to Bridgeport Coffee from time to time for a drink, but an individual americano will never have the effect that the smell of 200 bags in a small room do!
We just moved into the neighborhood and tried Bridgeport Coffee for the 1st time. I only do lattes, and let me tell you--- their coffee kicks butt! Very strong and delicious. So good in fact that it has kept me away from Starbucks on several occasions now. Space is super clean and provides free wi-fi and the daily weather report is on a little chalkboard. It's a little gem.
Review Source:Being relatively new to the Chicago scene, this coffee shop is a refreshing change from the ubiquitous coffee chains that you find on every street corner. This quaint coffee shop is located a few blocks from where I live so it's super convenient to grab a quick drink or bite to eat on the go.
When it comes to drinks, Bridgeport Coffee is fair trade certified and carries a wide variety of drinks and a decent selection of sandwiches, baked goods, and etc. Their drinks are just as pricey as some of the other popular chains, but I think they are just as good if not better! The coffees are nice and strong, especially the frozen fraps. I've also had the arnold palmer (1/2 iced tea, 1/2 lemonade), which was equally as delicious. I've also tried some of their sandwiches, specifically the grilled chicken sandwich on wheat loaded with large chunks of piping hot chicken breast with a myriad of toppings and condiments. The sandwich and wraps are all made to order and they bring it to your table hot and fresh! Also, all wraps and sandwiches come with chips and different options for bread including wheat, white, bagel, etc. You can also substitute for soup, salad or fruit cup for a couple dollars more.
The baristas are incredibly warm and friendly every time I've visited, which is a plus. Nothing ruins my cup o joe more than a rude barista, ugh! Bridgeport Coffee also is a great spot to come study if the library doesn't work for you or you get distracted at home. The password to the wifi is on a board right next to the door so you don't have to go to the counter and awkwardly ask the baristas. The only drawback is that wifi can be suppppperrr slow at times when there are many people using it so you have been warned! The owners should really upgrade to a faster service.
In terms of parking, there isn't a parking lot, but there is plenty of street parking around the area. Overall, this is an amazing coffee shop that everyone should try out at least once!
Went twice right after moving into the neighborhood, will never go again. Â The service here is incredibly lacking.
This last time was it - I walked in on a Saturday afternoon holding my 11 month old child in my arms and saw a collective eye roll from the three people working behind the counter. Â I wanted to scream, "don't worry, we're not staying" but I resisted. Â I asked for my Americano to go and the lady who took my order didn't say "okay", "sure", "coming right up!", "go to hell breeder", nothing. Â All I got was the total due and then the woman took my money and walked away. Â It was put up on the counter with no announcement and no thanks. Â Plus, the Americano was pretty meh.
To me, it was clear that the BCC wants a certain kind of patron and if anyone who doesn't fit into that little box happens to wander in, the policy is to be as rude, Â dismissive and unwelcoming as possible so they know not to come back.
Message received BCC.
I thought of trying out this place to support a local, noncorporate coffeehouse. Unfortunately I was very disappointed.
CONS:
Environment: They are so stingy with the A/C in the summer or heat in the winter. My laptop overheated several times in just one hour. I know you aren't a rich company like starbucks but the sweaty heat soaking tshirts is inhumane.
Service: I don't know if the owners just hired their friends or family because the service is unremarkable and cold, but it's always the same people. There is no warm smile or greeting, just a lack of energy from hipsters who think they are special little snowflakes because they don't work at a big chain coffeeshop. They just kind of take your order and dump your coffee on the counter.
PROS:
Coffee/Drinks: The only saving grace of this place is the actual coffee and drinks. They have pretty good taste and quality. I would give them 5 stars if this was the only consideration but ambiance is just as important when I'm paying for a $5 drink.
The second time was the charm for me and Bridgeport Coffee Company. Â Last winter my husband and I tried to visit and we encountered the perfect confluence of no parking, impatient cars and super cold wind. Â Rather than hoof it multiple blocks, we just drove on. Â
Yesterday my heroine in city driving, better known as my daughter, brought me back. Â I am so glad! Â I really wanted to try my standard drink, small vanilla latte, but it was pretty warm out and in so I opted for it iced.
Shivery caffeine delight in a charming spot. Â Made me wish I had known about this place when I spent some serious time in this neighborhood in a brief other lifetime.
We will be back as I need to try a hot beverage and maybe a sandwich before I can truly say I have experienced it!
This is a great coffee place! As others have mentioned, they have great coffee and definitely higher quality than Starbucks. I highly recommend just trying their house coffee, which has a great full flavor. They also have pour-over coffee, which is great if you know what you like (e.g. sumatra, mexico).
The environment is also great too. They have a loud section (right when you walk in) for those who don't mind the sound. They also have a "laptop only" section for those who need their peace and quiet.
Their food is good for the price. I had the Chipotle Black Bean Burger (reallly, a sandwich), which was nice. The workers were very hospitable and delivered the food to me.
Generally, this is a nice, down-to-earth place to grab a cup-of-joe and some food. I highly recommend it!
This place is really nice with a truly impressive food and coffee selection. I feel like the pizza bagels get larger and more elaborate every time I get there. Parking is also a cinch, which is very nice.
However, the place is on the loud and crowded side, even on a weekday afternoon. So if you're looking for some quiet study/work time, this is not the place for you. If you're a novelist who thrives off of people-watching though, you might be in the right place.
Small, quaint, unsuspecting, great. Not only did that rhyme but that about sums up Bridgeport Coffee House.
Their own roast coffee is superb, the service is excellent, the people are extremely friendly, and the food is stellar. In addition to that, free wifi, if you're driving, easy parking, easy to access by bike, bus, or walking, and lets face it, this trumps any Starbucks any day of the week.
Go here, make friends, drink coffee, be merry.
I hate writing reviews for places when I live by them and go there all the time. I usually love this place.
But a few days ago, they gave me a iced latte that was kind of sour. I don't know what was wrong with it but I get the same thing almost every day alternating between this place and a starbucks so my taste buds are set.
It tasted super funky and I kept drinking it because a) I paid $5 and I'm cheap/not wasteful. b) Maybe I just haven't sampled the broader spectrum of lattes. c) They seem to make everyone else's drink with the same ingredients so what could be so bad?
Anyways, I ended up feebly huddled over my toilet for the next 6 hours. I had a phone interview for a job I wanted and had to try my best to not upchuck in the middle of it.
Lesson learned: When stuff tastes weird, stop eating it. (Thats what she said).
Wonderful little coffee shop with some of the nicest staff around.
I ordered a hot chocolate to avoid a late night caffeine problem. "how would you like your hot chocolate" she asked me. "Like an 8 year old".
My hot chocolate had whipped cream, chocolate syrup, and I nearly expected a coloring book.
Excellent service. The place was pretty thick with Macbook Air toting hipsters taking up entire tables by themselves (totally weak sauce), but other than that, just a wonderful coffee shop. Bring some friends *I mean YOU mac-fan-boy hipsters*
I don't get it. I have to be missing something. I don't dish out poor reviews for stupid reasons, but this place is awful.
1. Service. The customer service is not always, but often terrible. I have walked in here, stood at the counter, and watched the barista avoid eye contact with me and clean the entire counter top for 5 minutes while I stood there waiting to order. I have ordered cappuccinos over an hour prior to closing only to be told that they "already cleaned the machine". Not once have I been thanked for a tip. You're treated far better at the DMV.
2. Crowds. I know this isn't the fault of the cafe, but good luck finding a place to sit down unless you show up bright and early on a weekday or just before closing. And yes, it is very hipstery. But find me a cafe in Chicago that isn't.
3. Quality. Their coffee is alright. Their lattes are beaten by flying colors a block away at *gulp* Dunken Donuts. They're inconsistent, and often times have been literally chucked into the garbage a block away after 2 sips. Inedible.
The food is bland and moderate at best, especially in a neighborhood with bakeries on every other corner.
4. Value. Once you walk in, you can tell that none of the customers are native Bridgeporters. This is because a native Bridgeporter would not spend $5+ on a coffee. Cafes in general are expensive, but this one is on the high end.
After reading so many amazing reviews, seeing the crowds, and living down the block, Â I gave them a few dozen chances to win me over. They didn't. I'd say the remaining value to this place is somewhere to meet a friend, but again, there's a 20% chance you'll actually find a place to sit.
Maybe I'll try again in a few months and be on the same orgasmic page as everyone else.
If you're a coffee fan, Bridgeport Coffee is your spot. Caveat: My review is based solely on their drip and pour over coffee. But, isn't that the point of drinking coffee? Their roasts allow the flavor of the beans to really shine through, and I've learned quite a lot how different coffees from around the world actually are. I really like the laid back neighborhood vibe of Bridgeport Coffee. Early weekday mornings have a brisk crowd picking up morning coffee, served with the smile I need pre-caffeine! On more leisurely weekend mornings, it's a great place to sit and read the paper while enjoying a pour-over (and the donuts). Â I really should try an espresso drink some day, but I enjoy the coffee too much :)
At home, I always keep a pound of whole beans from Bridgeport. The Bubbly Creek blend is one of my favorites.
Stopped in mid-afternoon for a cup of tea with a friend visiting from abroad, and it was packed with students nursing their drinks, heads buried in their computers.
Throwing caution to the wind, we opted to stay, and placed our orders with the friendly barista at the cash register. Â I ordered the green mandarin tea, which was pretty terrific, and after being given instructions on how long to let it steep before beginning to drink it, a table opened up and we sat down.
As mentioned already, the tea was quite good, and the environment was inviting as well. Â In addition to drinks, they serve sandwiches, and based on appearance alone, I'd bet they are good. I would have no trouble whiling away the time here, reading a book or doing some work, and others clearly agree with me given the number of empty tables (0) inside. Â
They have patio seating available, so I'm sure I'll be hitting that up come Spring, but for now, I'll sit inside, nursing my tea waiting impatiently for the snowflakes that are due to fall any day now.
One of the best coffee shops in the city. Bridgeport Coffee Company knows how to brew a mean cuppa coffee. And when I say mean, I mean freakin' delicious. Their roastery is just down the street! Holla.
For the most part I'm a black coffee kinda gal, and that's what I got at Bridgeport, although they have plenty of other coffee/espresso/tea drinks to enjoy. I was also in the mood for something sweet, so I asked what kind of muffins they had (they had some in the display case but they weren't labeled). A nice guy in line recommended the bran muffin so I went with that one. This is going to make me sound like I'm 80 but I really love bran. Anywho, both the coffee and the muffin were excellent - the coffee was full and strong without being bitter, and the muffin was just sweet enough and not too bran-ny.
The shop is small and cozy, with comfy wood furniture. The employees and patrons give BCC a nice hometown, friendly atmosphere. I enjoyed listening to the random banter that floated throughout the room while I waited for my coffee. I would happily trade in my trips to the 'bucks for this place, if only it were closer.
So I'm kinda reviewing my cross country trip a little backwards, but I couldn't forget Chicago and this awesome coffee shop!!
When my friend brought my bf and I over to this very cute coffee shop near her house, I fell in love. The staff is friendly and helpful. The decor is so comfortable and relaxing. I loved that they provided a doggy water dish outside for the pups, as well as outdoor seating. Though the inside decor was just as cozy, mellow and welcoming. I felt very at home here. I was ready to throw down my suitcase and forget about the rest of the drive to L.A. That's how much I loved the feel of this place (and well just overall Chicago as well. Love you guys!).
The quality of coffee is great, and I loved their cheddar jalapeno bagel with cream cheese. If I lived here, I would imagine I'd sit here with my laptop and enjoy a cozy morning, coffee in hand, and bagel not far from my reach.
Great coffee, great food, great service.
What compliments a great cup of coffee?
Great service, great food and very friendly coffee lovers sitting all around you.
I was nearby and needed a pick me upper and stopped in and to my surprise I stayed longer than I expected. I ordered my favorite "Americano" and it was made perfect... very smooth and creamy.
As I was complimenting the barista, she recommended the chicken salad wrap, she was not wrong at all, it was superb and fresh.
I made my way to a table which was all closely clustered together, made a few new friends, had a great meal with a perfectly made brew. You can't ask for a more delightful day at Bridgeport Coffee Company. My new home.
Well I have worked at numerous chain and independent coffee shops around Chicago, and to be honest it all tastes the same to me. I will keep going to a coffee shop as long as there is coffee and tea.
Bridgeport Coffee has free wifi and I will admit it is crawling with hipsters, but its not far from my house and the wait staff is always nice to me. I do remember a time when my sister waited a long time for a bagel as other people were walking out with bagels and they came in after us. Plus, they do have an issue with their heating and air system.
But the way I look at it is, I get Internet at home. I can get a bagel/coffee at home, but if I am out and about I will stop at the cafe and pick up something along the way. Its the only coffee shop I know of in Bridgeport.
If I move out of Bridgeport then whichever coffee shop is in that neighborhood will become by favorite.
"Well damn. I do believe this is the best chicken salad wrap I've ever had!"
- Me, to my friend Maja
Location, location, location. Easy street parking (plenty of the free kind) and then there's the obvious: Bridgeport Coffee Co is located directly across from my favorite bar in Chicago, Maria's! Yes, I'm actually admiring their artistic bottle display from my workstation as I type. See you in 2.75 hours (er, minutes) for the beer tasting but for now, back to this brilliant little coffeeshop!
Music. Fantastic jazz is being piped in, ideal for working and sprucing up the almost too quiet environment. I like. And, it's helping cover up the sounds of an awkward internet date. (He: What's your favorite color? She: That's a terrible question.)
Drinks. They'll set you up with coffee/espresso concoctions, chai, yerba maté, loose leaf teas, hot chocolate, apple cider, ice tea... even blended drinks!
For the lighter appetite, BCC offers a sweet selection of soups, sandwiches, wraps and the incredibly amazing-looking pizza bagel. Maja loved it! She's a round two kind of girl, and now she's savoring some minestrone. Verdict? "Really well-seasoned, not too salty, very simple flavors and it's a good-sized cup." You should know the deeee-licious chicken salad wrap contains onions if you're against them, and besides the cheese (provolone for me), it was lightly splashed with a super tasty Italian dressing. Done and done.
(I ADORE this cover I'm hearing of Leonard Cohen's 'Dance Me to the End of Love', btw. Madeleine Peyroux is the name. A real love-maker, methinks).
What makes a good independent coffeeshop?
1. GOOD coffee. This is key. You'd think this would be a given, but its not always the case. A passion for little brown beans, aromas, steamed milk, and the art of fine java. BCCo, has it.
2. Comfortable seating. Wooden furniture is not wobbly or junky. Plenty of room to sit, study, chat, gaze out the window. Bonus points for a nice side patio perched in sun-drenched sidwalk on Morgan Street.
3. Light fare. Of course most places carry the appropriate pastries...but an offering of light sandwiches and snacks makes for a nice one-stop shop, especially when you're studying/working for several hours. The bites looked tasty...think bagel sandwiches, fresh veggies and the like.
4. Friendly folks behind the counter. Drink coffee, be happy. All were friendly and efficient.
5. Free Wifi. Enough said, the password is posted right on the door so you don't have to get all awkward asking the counter guy for it. Well done.
6. A pretty bathroom. This is an extra point of prowess, but when the artwork upon the walls of the loo is exceptional, I find that typically the rest of the place is too. Who knows what this means, but this bathroom is pretty damn swell.
All in all, a win. The crowd is decidedly "first wave of Bridgeport artists and students," and there wasn't a glowering glare in sight. Comfortable, accessible, great coffee and a great 'hood vibe. Easy parking, too.
Chalk up another wine for Bridgeport...coffee house, complete!
They have the best doughnut.
Not like "on the Southside" or "in the city of Chicago" kind of best, like the best doughnut period. Period.
They order them from some nearby Lithuanian bakery, but the guy there won't tell me where exactly, because I think he's afraid I'm going to jack the delivery truck some early morning.
It's giant and like kind of glazed, not at all cakey. Â It's honestly more of a doughnut shaped beignet. Â With a chocolate glaze. Â And there's kind of a wonderful, well...oiliness with each bit, along with a slight airiness. Â I don't even usually like doughnuts usually. For a cost of .89! And they are fresh, like perfectly fresh.
I love that this place uses really local suppliers. Â The coffee is okay, but honestly, I'm not really that into coffee, so you probably shouldn't base any coffee stuff on me - but it is strong and they seem to know a lot about it. Â It is a super cute, but small coffee house and the people there are the just right kind of friendly, not too perky in at 6 a.m., so you don't get annoyed. Â But they DO know that "grumble grumble uh uh" means coffee before dawn and that a head nod means "Yes, and a doughnut, too please." And they let you use a card with no minimum purchase, which is sweet.
Today I left with a bag of like eight for $6 and it felt like I was stealing. Â I passed a Dunkin Donuts just down the street from here and I hope that all of the dumb bitches up in there never ever go down a few blocks and take my sacred doughnuts. Let them eat sprinkles!
