Omg this place has went from classy to trashy. There was a girl on the bar nasty sloppy drunk twerkin. The bar was sticky my drink was bad. I saw guys in long shirts and shorts and tennis shoes. If I wanted to be in that enviroment I sure wouldn't wear my nice costume jewelry. I couldn't believe the level of ratchedness that I saw. I already didn't like the place but sure don't have to worry about me being back.
Review Source:We went to this place on a Saturday night, big mistake! We were running late for dinner and arrived a little after 8 PM. Had no ideal it was a night club. $5 cover charge for the band. When we walk in the hostess told us it would be a 50 minute wait. As we turned to leave and ask for the cover charge back a table showed up in the back. We didn't see the band as they were not there when we arrived and we were so far in a back corner. The tables in front of where the band was to set up were all empty. That why I couldn't understand the 50 min wait.
The food was OK, nothing to rave about. Would it bring me back? No. The waitress was OK, nothing special. Service is very slow. Smoking is suppose to be allowed only at the bar. Some people were walking all over with cigarettes. Valet was losing keys.
We went there on a monday night and were seated immediately. I ordered the meatloaf and it was some if the best meatloaf I have ever had. The greens were good but a little on the salty side.
Our waitress was very nice but it took almost an hour to get our food (there were about 2 other tables with diners in the entire restaurant).
I was unaware of the specials they have on mondays. We ordered 2 cocktails, an appetizer, and three entrees, and spent $35! Not bad!
I'll definitely go back!
Dinner meeting turn reality food critique show....lol! And good thing we turned into a reality episode because the music was so loud we certainly couldn't conduct a meeting! In a nutshell....just nothing special. Soul food not done so well! We ordered chicken & waffles...chicken ok a bit dry (on everyones plate), Cornbread was just plain not good...how you mess up corn bread? Fried green tomatoes not bad but had this weird sauce...again not bad but not necessary! The final blow & disappointment was NO PEACH COBBLER! I mean it was on the menu but we were told it would take 2 hours to make....huh? If your joint opens at 4 by 6 you would think one of your most popular dishes would be ready or am I expecting 2 much? lol Being from Chicago, I know I'm spoiled with phenomenal choices but dang! The waitress really tried when hearing our disappointment with the lack of cobbler and brought us vanilla ice cream with blueberries and chocolate sauce...huh? At lease bring another knock out desert to make us forget but this? At least she tried....right? I wouldn't bother with Buttons! (owners should check out Table 52 in Chicago...soul food done very right & the full menu is ALWAYS available during hours of operation)
Review Source:I have been to Buttons in Fort Worth, and enjoyed it, so I looked forward to a gospel brunch which was advertised in Addison. Â I had done this one time before in Austin at Stubbs and had a great time. Â At Buttons, I Â was disappointed.
The buffet food was good, and the service a bit slow, but my biggest disappointment was the music. Â Two guys, one on a harp, the other on drums, and a soundtrack playing in the background. Â Not what I was expecting.
The good news? Â I used a Yelp coupon, which offset the price. Â Not sure I would go back here again.
I asked my aunt what was good to do in dallas and she refered me to his place described it as older crowd , good food, good entertainment....I got all three the only suggestion i would make is they need to have a buzzer system when tables become available...the girl told me she would text me when it was available...kinda not professional but whatev...go ! hurry! Friday night
Review Source:Loved the live music. I give them 5 stars for the music.
We sat in V.I.P.Food was ok.I had the chicken wings, cabbage, and mac and cheese.Chicken wings were very dry.I sent them back. The cabbage and mac and cheese was good.My husband had the chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes, and asparagus. He said the chicken fried steak was good but it had too much batter. He scraped all the batter off and only ate the meat.Everything else on his plate he said was good.We payed 30.00 each to get in for VIP.To eat in VIP you have to spend 20.00 each.
i have been to buttons 3 times now....twice 2 the addison location & once to the duncanville location and i can honestly say i haven't been impressed either time!! everyone raves about buttons...but the food is not all that...i'm sorry!! i've definitely had better!! we recently got an order to go & some food was over seasoned and the other was under seasoned!! can we find a balance here? i had the chicken fried chicken...which was gigantic...it filled the entire to-go container....cut into it...thick piece of meat but it was real doughy...ugh!!! took a bite...salty as hell!!! omg no!! i ordered mac n cheese & yams as a side!! well get home..they didn't even put the mac n cheese in the bag & the yams weren't yams...those are mashed yams!!! my girl had the wangs & thangs....which were drenched in the sauce they put on the wings (when i specifically asked for the sauce on the side)....the cornbread was hard as a brick & the black eyed peas needed seasoning...bad!!! dessert time....she had a brownie which she stated wasn't too bad...wasn't the best but it sufficed!! i had the peach cobbler...people really?!?!!? i'm a country gal, used to my granny's cobbler...flaky crust...tender peaches...not too sweet...just right!! i don't know wth buttons is going for...that crust was gummy...the peaches were harder than the dayum cornbread & i know they had to have poured a whole bag of sugar just in that 1 bowl....smh!! for these prices....i'm definitely over buttons!!!
Review Source:I've gone twice. The first time the lady singing was so boring. Â I think she was putting the band to sleep. I went again last night and the singer was great!!! Â The waitress was also great. I was starving when I got there. We ordered the gumbo and chicken and waffles. When it came out, it looked so good. But, the food wasn't hot. Not one bit of the food was hot. It was warm as if it had been sitting there for a little while. That was bothersome to me because I expect HOT food. Â Oh and my drink was sorry too. So, the food wasn't hot and the drinks were weak. But, my service was great! Lol
Review Source:Food was good, service was good, entertainment was fantastic. However, the manager was flat out rude.
His name was Shabazz and he basically told us that we needed to leave the table, because they had a reservation waiting. However, we were informed that they didn't even do reservations on Friday and Saturday. He went on to say, "this is a restaurant and not a club!!!"
He was screaming at us and telling us that we had to go because, "my staff only makes $2.13 an hour." Â Which insinuated that we were not going to tip, which I found to be flat out insulted, as my party is known for over-tipping and going back to establishments where they staff ask for us to sit at their table. Â
At the same time, there was another table of people that were there before we got there, sitting directly in front of the entertainment that were still sitting there, uninterrupted.
For this reason alone, and the manner in which this manager, Shabazz treated us, I will not be patronizing Buttons-Addison again. There is a way to speak to customers and he doesn't know how to do that. I actually feel sorry for the employees working under him, as our waiter was the one that told us we had to leave. Shabazz didn't have the nerve to do it on his own, until we asked for him to come to our table.
Management training would do them a world of good. I would rather drive 40 miles to Fort Worth and be treated with respect than to go here again.
I had a craving for fried chicken on a Sunday, and Yelp led us to Buttons. The fried chicken was succulent and crisp. The waffles were a different but yummy side. The live jazz group was outstanding. Our waitress was an idiot when it came to serving drinks though. We asked for a martini with a twist of lemon. She forgot the twist and when asked, brought a plate of lemon wedges. She brought our red wine by carrying it, not by the stem, but warming the glass with her smudgy fingers. We asked for a Brandy Alexander, Â she didn't know what it was and said she'd ask, and then she brought us a snifter of brandy. Oh well, the music made up for it.
Review Source:I ate at this restaurant once, months ago, and I would have given it 5 stars then. The food was delicious with great service and a good atmosphere. I have talked it up to everyone I know, recommending it over and over.
We visited it this weekend with family and were VERY disappointed. We were there 15 minutes before a server approached us. Even then, he didn't ask us for our drink order, just told us he would get us water. Then we changed server, as ours apparently got into an argument with the manager and left. (I have no idea why anyone would tell us that.) Our  glasses stayed empty most of the time, and overall the service was not very good.
I ordered the chicken and waffles, a house specialty. This is the dish my husband had last time, and after sampling it, I was incredibly jealous, because it was fantastic. This weekend, it was ok. It didn't come with the blueberry butter shown on the menu, and the sweet potato pomme frites were very dry and tasteless. Was it bad? No, it was average. We also ordered the macaroni and cheese, a side dish we previously raved about. Apparently, they have changed the ingredients. It neither looked nor tasted the same. Everything else was some we have never eaten there before, and it all got the same review. It was ok.
One thing we were looking forward to was the live entertainment. we went out of our way to make the reservation after the time the website listed for the jazz singer to start. We left over an hour later and never heard her. The website needs some updating there.
Overall, it wasn't bad, it wasn't great, it was a very average meal, more typical of a chain restaurant than I previously experienced.
I went to Buttons for ladies night expecting great food, nice jazz music playing in the background and pleasant conversation over dinner. I did get great food. I ordered the salmon with spinach and it was delicious. The band was fantastic and really loud so conversation was absolutely impossible until the band took a break. The volume of the music made me feel like I was having dinner right in the center of the dance floor of a night club. I think this is a better spot for a date night than a ladies night out if you have any plans to actually talk to each other.
Review Source:I went here a few times and the place was great. They had live music, great beer specials and an awesome happy hour menu. This was definitely a favorite spot for my wife and I.
Recently, I went again with my parents, who were visiting from out of town. They did not have live music that day (although they advertise live music 7 days a week) and they had redone their drink and happy hour menu. No longer did they have half price appetizers and now Shiner, Sam Adams, Fat Tire, etc were considered premium beers so they we're discounted like they used to be.
I understand the beer thing because most places consider those brands premium, but taking away the half price appetizers put a bad taste in my mouth. The food here is good, but overpriced in my opinion (I can't fathom paying $20 for chicken and waffles). The half priced appetizers made it worth it but now, it's just overpriced food, regular priced beer and occasional live music. Their service is also very SLOW. I've gone 4 or 5 times and it always takes forever to get food and/or drinks. Most recently it took over 30 minutes to get a plate of fried green tomatoes.
If they ever decide to go back to how they used to be then we'll consider going back but as of now, this place is overpriced and just not worth it with so many other options available in Addison.
Four stars is pretty good these days......the ambiance, the live music, the diverse crowd, and the service earned that four star rating. The food was nothing to write home about, granted I'm a very picky eater but I ordered something that I knew I'd enjoy. However, their twist on what should have been a fairly simple and delectable meal did not suit my taste buds. In spite of my displeasure with the food, I'd definitely give Buttons another try though!
Review Source:I ate here with some friends during a girls night out a couple of weeks ago. I don't know if the service was off because it was fairly slow by the time we got there, but the service was okay. The waitress was nice enough, but she kept disappearing for long stretches of time, which made it difficult to get anything we needed--refills, corrections to orders, et cetera.
So, I have to be honest, I wasn't impressed with my food. At all. Like other reviewers have mentioned, my food was really salty. I mean, if you don't have high blood pressure when you walk into this restaurant, you definitely want to check it on your way out.
I ordered the gumbo, expecting all kinds of spicy goodness. Is that what I got? Oh, no, no! I got some pretty good garlic bread, salty something or other--it wasn't even good!--and, get this, CRUNCHY rice! That's right folks, the rice in my gumbo was SO undercooked, it actually CRUNCHED in my mouth. As a woman of Nigerian heritage, rice is a staple in my household, and I've been cooking it for many years. Crunchy rice is just an outrage, so that plate of nastiness went back.
Now, you're probably wondering what the 2-star rating is about. Answer: ambience. The atmosphere is pretty cool, it has a darker (but not too dim!) interior, and with the music, it felt like a throwback to the jazz lounges of the 50s and 60s. And I like that! Â Aaaand, the chicken and waffles. One of my friends ordered it, and it was pretty awesome. (The other two people in our group had issues with their orders, but the chicken and waffles were definitely on point).
Overall, I'd give this place a chance to redeem itself the next time I'm in Dallas.
Good food, cool atmosphere, and live music all the time. Â
Stopped here back in Oct 2012 while in Dallas for my annual trip and this one of the my favorite places to see people, listen to great live soulful music, and eat.
For my meal, I had the salmon (which was very tasty) with collard greens and yams as my sides. Â The greens were good, but the taste of the yams were off a little (too much allspice or nutmeg). Â My friend had the chicken and waffles, which were tasty and the serving size was more than adequate. Â
I would like to see better choices for alcoholic beverages and wine...the options left more to be desired. Â
The environment is fun, but this place gets really packed so reservations are recommended. Â Staff was very friendly/nice and apparently are used to navigating such a busy environment, which is a plus.
With such a cool atmosphere, good music, and beautiful people, I would definitely be back the next time Im in Dallas.
Great place for an all around good time. Food was delicious. Had the Ox Tail stew and was pleasantly surprised that it was ACTUAL oxtail. Most places sadly advertise oxtail only to not really use oxtail. The overall taste was truly comforting. Just like mom's home cooking. The live music was unexpected and entertaining. The entire restaurant got up and danced around! Loved the entire atmosphere. Wait was long but usually to be expected on the weekends. Service was warm and inviting. I hope to get another chance to go back soon.
Review Source:I use to really like this location, but not so much anymore. Â The prices have gone up and the quality of the food these days is terrible. Â I recently went here with a group of friends and all of the dishes were terrible. Â I will only be back for the wonderful live music and drinks. Â If I need something to eat, I will stick with the side salad for now on.
Review Source:I came to this location on a Saturday night for a friends birthday celebration. My friend made reservations for that night days ahead of time however we still had to wait over an hour for a table. The hostess kept telling us they could not make a table get up so we were forced to wait it out. When we finally did get a table our waitress was all over the place and not attentive. It took forever to get our food and everyones was cold. The entire experience was terrible and while the manager did comp our meal, I will never be back and I absolutely do not recommend this location to anyone.
Review Source:The food here is expensive about 16 to 20 dollars a plate. Everyone at my table enjoyed there food, so the good thing the food was worth the price but even the mix drinks were pretty pricey too. The music here is very good but they really need to offer cheaper appetizers. Another thing that turned me half way off was the fact they had a valet charging 5 dollars to park your car for a restaurant, luckily I found a space that was for free.
Review Source:Too much SALT!
Wow, I used to love this place.  My wife and I took another couple from out of town here for dinner.  My wife had jalapeño cheese grits with shrimp.  The other couple had the salmon and the oxtails.  I was going to have the chicken fried rib eye, but the waitress told me that it was a little salty.  I thanked her for her honesty and said that I would take the rib eye. Â
The rib eye was overcooked and when I cut into my rib eye and took a bite,It was very salty. Â I then tasted the mash potatoes and they too were salty. Â I announce my salt problem to the table and my friend replied that his oxtails were salty as well. Â My wife said her grits were salty too. Â I tried to eat my steak, but I had to sent it back. Â My second steak was less salty, but the peas that came with it were still salty.
I don't know if it was just the cook who was there that night, but everything was salty.
Our friends were looking toward the Creme brûlée, but they were told that they were out.
There was 4 piece Jazz Band that was EXCELLENT! Â I bought there CD!
Just went here last night for a birthday dinner. I made reservations and the group was quickly seated so that's a plus.
So I don't know if the menu prices has went up or what but everything seemed more expensive! Two people in the bday party group didn't even order food because the prices were too high. I ordered the Chicken Alfredo, which was good for the most part, but way to salty. I felt like my blood pressure was going up at I ate. The bday girl just ordered a side of Mac-and-Cheese and said it tasted like rubber and didn't eat it. BUT the birthday dessert was good. Which was peach cobbler. I guess they have hits and misses at this place.
Atmosphere was cool, there was a live band playing New Orleans style music that night. Staff was very friendly!
In my opinion the original Buttons in Ft. Worth is 10 times better. They have an actual dance floor where everyone has a good time and the original chef is out there and his food is always good! I'll keep going to the Ft.Worth location.
Came here purely for the chicken and waffles, as I had a hard time finding any place besides Ihop that had it as menu item.
All in all, I loved the chicken and waffles there. Â Staff was really nice and the service was great.
Parking is a pain there, even with finding a spot. Â Better off parking in a lot near by or doing valet.
Good atmosphere, good drinks, live music, fantastic food. Enough said.
The smothered pork chop fell apart when my fork touched it - it was melt in your mouth good. Â Perfect cornbread and black eyed peas too and the fried green tomatoes for the appetizer was fabulous.
Reservations HIGHLY recommended, otherwise you might not get a table.
Plus, you gotta love a restaurant that serves chicken & waffles.
Buttons has decent 'soulfood' but the prices aren't worth it.
Nonetheless, it's worth experiencing at least once.
The bottomless mimosas are great as long as they remain bottomless (they 'ran out' during Sunday brunch).
The decor/colors of the place are somewhat moody but perhaps they're going for the French Quarter/Rampart look.
The Maitre D' was as scattered, dismissive, and inattentive as described in many of these reviews. She wasn't seating walk-ins in the order that they arrived (many parties arrived in the same quantities). She sets a negative tone for guests when it should be more inviting and congruent with soulfood cheer.
I'm on the fence as to whether I'd go back but it is one of those places you have to try at least once.
I came here with my cousins and we had a blast! The food was forgettable. Good chicken but dry and hard waffles. The fish was ok and the chicken fried sirloin was hard to eat (the meat was very chewy). I do plan trying other items on their menu though. Everything sounded very appetizing. The music kept us interested. N'Tense was playing and WOW they were great!
I love the atmosphere here. I would definitely come back to enjoy the music and the drinks. Just don't order the Chicken and Wobble. Not good.
Overpriced and overrated...
I've been to Buttons twice now - there are times when I have a not so great experience and I feel like I should give the place a second chance. Well, after two tries, unless I have to, I don't think I'll be going back.
Pros:
Music - the music is good.
Cons:
No substitutions allowed. What? I asked for a substitute for potato salad because I'm on a low carb diet, I offered to pay extra for the substitution and the server still refused. I'm giving you the opportunity to make more money and YOU TURNED IT DOWN. What business does that?
Music level - I like the music but it's so loud it makes it impossible to have a conversation.
Parking - Valet...really?
Food quality and cost - I've had better food at better price points. The food isn't bad, but it isn't unbelievably lick my fingers good either. Just because you smother something in salt, butter, sauces, and/or cheese does not make it taste better. In fact, it makes me have to spend extra time on the elliptical. And I think the prices for some of the food is ridiculous. $36 for a filet? Umm, this isn't Ruth Chris.
Drinks - this is one place I'll stick with wine. I wasn't impressed by their mixed drinks at all, and I'm an easy lush.
So so:
Service - The first time I went, the hostess and my server were pretty indifferent. Not overly rude, but not great. The second time, the hostess was a bit indifferent, but my server was decent. He was pretty friendly and checked up on me during reasonable intervals. And that 2 hour rule - who does that? If I'm ordering food/drinks and spending money and I tip my server well at the end (which if I'm going to be taking up space for 2 hours I'll continue to order food) - what does it matter? I've seen them kick people out behind that two hour rule. To me, it's quite stupid.
In summary -- Good to check off your Dallas "been there done that" list. That's about it.
I really enjoyed the live jazz. It was a nice change of pace compared to the norm out there. The food is solid, but if every item on the menu was $3-5 cheaper, I would feel like it was a better deal for what you get and that always seems to makes food taste better.
They have interesting drink choices that sound good, but when we went on a Saturday evening the bar was pretty slammed and the drinks were neglected (taste and alcohol content). Â
Additionally our server was nice, but overall service was excruciatingly slow...now I won't have a problem with that if that means I get fresh HOT food....but when our food came room temp at best, I was a tad irritated and realized they were pretty understaffed when they were packed...something to consider.
I'll be back to give it another shot...but not just yet.
This place has been trending for a while and certainly has some good comfort food. I suggest the southern fried sirloin - I pined over it for days. BUT. The cocktails are subpar. Lots of color but poor on taste, quality and overall mixology.
Fun if you want to go dancing and possibly be hit on by a few 50 somethings in sandals.
The simple truth is that Buttons provides delicious yet expensive soul food for its patrons in a somewhat cavernous yet rather pleasing environment. Â While some of the dishes sport names similar to what one might find at your neighborhood Friday's, the taste of the food sparkles with energy. Â The spicy chicken wings are cooked perfectly and are simply divine with the blue cheese finish. Â The fried green tomatoes burst with delightful tartness even without the accompanying meats, the over easy egg, and the spring mix for good measure. Â The shrimp is decadently coated in an abundance of flavors. Â Â And we haven't even hit the entrees yet. Â
The pork chop comes smothered in a thick brown sauce that doubles as the perfect complement to your cabbage and rice. Â The gumbo exhibits a nice bite for a preparation so far outside of the Louisiana border. Â I'm kicking myself that I didn't order fried chicken and waffles, but I most assuredly would do so on a subsequent visit.
There might be better places for your money, but I sure felt that I got what I paid for at Button's. Â Strongly recommended for those who want something different than the typical boring chains that are an unnecessary stranglehold on the Addison dining scene.
Visited on a Friday evening. There were lots of parties going on so in addition to what appears to be the regular Friday night crowd...this mix was a bit much. It was really crowded. Â There was quite a wait for a table but the hostess was very honest about that when we arrived.
The drinks were amazing. Peach Cosmo was a surprising but delicious combination. Our waitress was very nice but just as another reviewer pointed out, she was a little too busy & therefore the service wasn't personable. The food took a really long time. Unusually so as I've been here several other times. I assume it was because of the large parties that were going on.
Buster Brown band performed. I've seen them before and they're awesome. Â The only problem is that the acoustics are such that with the band..it's very noisy. You can barely hear the conversation at your own table. That sort of defeated our Girls Night Out.
The bathroom is very nice. I was surprised that they were able to keep them so clean given the volume of people coming in and out of there. So for that: thank you very much!
Of course I will be back. Overall, Buttons has a cool vibe and the food is good.
When you walk in and you're the inly asian person among 50 black people, you know you've came to the right place for fried chicken. The host walks us to our table and sitting next to us was this 350 lbs guy half passed out, eyes drooping, and an empty plate in front of him.
The chicken was extremely juicy and moist on the inside and crispy on the outside. Popeye's has got em on the spice and flavor but not the meat.
Great service.
This is the first place I visited once I moved to Big D. Â I like it, but there's something to be desired here. Â
First off, the place looks great! Â The decor is very cool and I love the layout. Â The bar is nicely located with the dining areas nicely located, as well. Â I'm big on restaurants having nice restrooms, and they have really nice ones.
Second, I really like the food. Â I sampled the chicken & waffles, which is a good dish. Â But, MAN, the bread pudding is AWESOME! Â It takes at least two people to finish it off and the ingredients are great.
My issues, however, are with the music and the management. Â Live bands perform here, and I understand that can be a hit or miss for any establishment. Â My first time there, the band was great. Â My second time there, however, there was a different (and not so great band). Â The DJ's music selection can be kind off odd, too.
The worst thing I witnessed, however (and this is why they get three stars), was a customer service fiasco. Â A patron, who was clearly intoxicated, slipped on a spilled drink. Â First, that little pool of alcohol sat there way too long--maybe an hour? Â So a friend of mine got exasperated, and made a bee line to a manager to alert him of the hazard and the fall. Â The manager engaged in a tense, nonsensical negotiation with the drunk patron. Â That negotiation turned into a minor argument, which included the manager offering him...(wait for it)...A FREE DRINK! Â They somehow got through it, but it wasn't a great customer service moment for the restaurant.
I like the place, and I'll go back one of these nights; but I can't say I'm a fan.
Three of us ate at Button's tonight and it was a cool experience. Â Although we were probably a bit underdressed in jeans and sneakers, we weren't turned away and had a nice table near the windows-just far away enough from the music to not have to yell....too much...to hear eachother. Â I had the oxtail which was cooked to perfection and just enough veggies and rice to be satisfying. Â My husband had the chicken and waffles for the first time which looked pretty good and our friend had the brisket. The calamari appetizer was good too.
My only complaint was on the chicken wangs appetizer which was 12 bucks for 4 chicken wings. Great seasoning and a nice parmesan sauce, but really? $3 a wing is not worth it. Now you know better so don't make the same mistake.  The music was nice, our server, Tia was accomodating, and  parking wasn't an issue.  I'd definitely go again.
