Our trio had no plans to check this place out but ended up driving by on a pleasant Saturday afternoon and decided to stop in and see what Cahaba Brewing Company was all about.
The parking lot is tight; luckily it wasn't too crowded when we showed up. Â The space isn't very big at all, but it's garage style and was open-air on that lovely spring day.
The woman who was manning the taps was very friendly and even offered to let me sample brews because I'm terrible at deciding what I want. Â There are only four beers on tap. Â I'm not a huge beer gal so I won't try to describe the beers. Â I will say that the stout smelled deliciously like coffee, and I was tempted to get that. Â For us reluctant beer drinkers, half-pints are offered for $2.50 which was perfect [ended up with the American Blonde]. Â That was I can still drink with my beer buds but not feel chained to an entire pint. Â They also serve samplers served on cute branded boards in the shape of Alabama.
CBC doesn't offer edibles but a Vietnamese food truck pulled in while we were there. Â Seems like the food trucks roll in regularly.
Last but not least, there was free skeeball! Â Yay. Â Too bad I'm terrible, but no matter since it was free.
My beer enthusiast companions declared that Avondale was still #1 in their hearts. Â But we all enjoyed our afternoon at Cahaba and were glad we experienced the Cahaba experience.
Cahaba is the new kid on the block. Not as established as the other two breweries, but they seem to already have a style all their own. Small like Avondale...even smaller actually. I believe that was the intention, though, evidenced by their tag line "Small batch, big craft".
The tasting room is constructed of lots of concrete and wood with a nice high ceiling. Not a lot of frills, but a defined look nonetheless. When the front garage doors are lifted it makes the already open-air space feel even larger. One of the taco trucks pulled up right next to the open garage door on Friday which was a welcomed surprise for me. Dinner came right to me.
Cahaba currently offers four beers on tap all of which I thought were quite tasty. A really nice variety. Right now they only open the tasting room on Fridays 5-10 PM. The location is a little unusual compared to the other breweries, not a lot of parking so if they get any more popular it'll be tough to find a spot on the days they are open to the public. I'm super excited we've got three breweries in B'ham now!
Very utilitarian space for brewing and tasting. It's cool to be sipping a great brew while the aroma of another offering wafts from the brewing area. The picnic tables, cement and open bay give this an urban beer garden feel. It is as if the Cahaba guys just want you to taste their beer as soon as possible, feet from the source. The night I was there, the Cantina truck was  tempting folks with garlic fries and queso. Perfect for people who are not all about fluff and frills; just beer! PADDLE PADDLE!
