If this place had fantastic food to go along with the fantastic view, it would be, well, fantastic. Â Unfortunately the food is unremarkable and the saying "you go for the view, not the food" applies to this place. Â For breakfast I had the Coal Creek omelet, which comes with breakfast potatoes and a croissant. Â I recently had similar meals at the Salish Lodge and Brown Bag Cafe and both places were by far tastier than the one at Calcutta.
Review Source:We went there for mother's day.. at 60 bucks a piece fully loaded it's a bit overpriced.. The sushi was the standard conveyor belt stuff, mostly yellow tail. Â Also the fruit bar was mostly the cheap melon selection found in a mid range hotel breakfast buffet. Â The waiter staff 3 of them were relatively slow. Â they served iced tea in plastic cups, and we repeatedly had to ask for refills of coffee, tea, and sodas. Â The wait staff was also slow to bus dishes to the point where I built my own stack and hauled them to the busing station. Â we've gone there for 10 years.. I don't think my party of 15 will be back.
that being said. it's a great view and a facility. Â I had a similar experience with dinner at the grill too.
It's been awhile since we ate here but the other day I sat in the bar while waiting for a golf buddy and watched the NCAA tournament. Â Same impression as before: nice atmosphere, dear prices, and average service. Â Dark wood and brass are nice, but in this setting and for these prices I expect a really exceptional level of service and comfort that we've never experienced.
If you want to sit in a bar, the lounge upstairs (The Wooly Toad) offers the same or better service, and food out of the same kitchen, a better view, a more relaxed atmosphere and bigger TVs.
The drive up is well worth it for the view and the food! The wait staff appears very well trained and courteous. I Â will admit I was not super impressed with their chowder or the salmon my friend ordered last time I was there, but every other time I've been I am impressed with the food. (Maybe not the best seafood supplier? Hmm...)
I recently went for my birthday and had a great lunch enjoying the view in the sparsely occupied restaurant. They even gave me a brownie a la mode on the house! The decor is impeccable and high-end but relaxed, they do have an event space that I would imagine to be a great place for weddings, rehearsal dinners, or any large group.
I'm kinda in love with the Calcutta Grill. I think I could stay here for hours at any time of day and just drift away in the serenity of it all.
Come for Sunday Brunch. The daytime view is breath taking. Daylight streams in their large windows with an uninstructed view of Seattle and the valley. On a clear day you can see the mountains. On a cloudy day you can see the clouds kiss the skyline.
The brunch is exquisite. Their Newcastle Sunrise is light, tasty, and full of alcohol. Their Calcutta Burger is cooked to perfection and a meal unto itself. The burger is the size of my face!
Try the Eggs Benedict. They smother their eggs with hollandaise sauce. Yet it isn't over powering. The Canadian bacon retains its salty goodness. The eggs perfectly poached. Their little potatoes are divine. Seriously I could probably just eat a plate of these.
Come during the evening. Like now. Sure, you're not going to get the view except for your own twinkling lights of the city in the distance, but being that it's fall you may be the only people there. The dining room feels extra cozy with the dim lighting and candle light against the dark woods. I can't recommend the Prime Rib enough. I hunger just thinking of it. Their calamari is good, but the aioli sauce really makes it. Skip the Blackened Salmon Cesar Salad. The lettuce was crunchy, croutons were great, but I couldn't taste the cheese and the salmon was over cooked.
Now for dessert - their sorbet is magnificent. Their chocolate decadence is amazing if you like chocolate. If you don't then steal the candied pears while your dining company scarfs the chocolate down. Seriously they need to add those pears to something else. Their peach cobbler - yummy! Not too much ice cream, not too much fruit, a delicate balance of sugar and deliciousness.
The servers are great. I've always had a pleasant experience with them.
So, come out to Calcutta Grill. You and your belly will be pleased.
The view is amazing there, as everyone has said.
The waffles were good, the omelettes were good.
My main negative is that we sat outside on the patio, and it was a bit chilly since we were seated in the shade of the building (the seats in the sun were taken). We had a reservation, but had unlucky timing on what seats were available when we arrived.
When one of the seats in the sun was freed around 5 minutes in, we asked the Waiter if we could please be moved to the sun seat. We were told (not very politely), that they have a policy that no one can move into the sun once they're seated, as that is "unfair" to those who have a reservation. I said we had a reservation, they said that's their policy.
I never considered they'd actually refuse our ask to move to the empty table (which was empty for maybe 10 minutes before someone was seated in it). It seems like a policy gone pretty wrong, and made our breakfast/lunch a bit uncomfortable for the ladies at the table who were chilled.
I have lived in the Seattle area my whole life. Â A friend recommended this place as a good spot to watch the Blue Angels over the weekend. Â As we drove up the hill to the golf course and restaurant, it simply took my breath away. Â The view is truly amazing, I have never seen anything else like it in our area. Â We had brunch at Calcutta's. Â You definitely want to make reservations on a saturday. Â When we arrived, we were told it would be a 2 hour wait to get in. Â But, then their south patio opened up, and we grabbed a table next to the railing with the most spectacular view I have ever experienced in a restaurant. Â The service was excellent. Â My husband had the egg's benedict and their signature bloody mary. Â He really enjoyed his breakfast, and the bloody mary was the best ever ! Â I had the crab cake salad and chardonnay. Â They are definitely pricey, wine at $10 a glass. Â And my crab cake salad was $20. Â But, oh so worth it for a special treat. Â It turned out not to be a great place to watch the Blue Angels, because they were pretty far away. Â But, we just LOVED this place, and will definitely go back. Â Wish I was a golfer, so I could drive around the whole course, very very beautiful place.
Review Source:My girlfriend reserved a special table for my birthday on June 11. The service was extremely poor and we had to wait 10 minutes to flag down a waiter who then took our drink orders. This waiter was one of the worse I have encountered in all my Seattle dining experiences. The halibut was overcooked and so small I thought we were served a child's portion. The scallops were bland and the crab cakes had no flavor. The waiter told us the crabs were Connecticut dungeness (do not exist on the Atlantic ocean). The view was good. I felt so bad for my girlfriend since she wanted to have a special romantic evening. I would never go back.
Review Source:I had high hopes for this place, as it was a candidate for my wedding venue. Â Unfortunately, dinner was way overpriced for the crappy food.
We sat at the patio. Â The view was gorgeous!!! Â The crab cakes appetizer was small, and not crispy. Â It looked and tasted boring.
Next, I had halibut while my fiance had the prime rib. Â The halibut ($34!) was not very fresh, was way under-seasoned, and the pea puree tasted too umm green. My fiance's prime rib ($28) was under-seasoned as well. Â It wasn't a very good cut of meat (had a lot of gristle). Â The side of mash potato that it came with was bland.
Come here for the view, not the food..
The service is beyond excellent here. The servers are attenttive and they really do care about their patrons.
We came for my friend's bday for brunch on a gorgeous day, If you prefer sweets for brunch get the Hawaiian Sweet Bread French Toast the thick cut bacon goes perfect with every bite! My cousin and I shared the french toast w the American breakfast w/ the home fries. Since it was my friends bday we also got a complimentary dessert, winning!
Overall it was a great brunch w/ an awesome view of the golf course, I almost felt like I was a member of the Newcastle Golf Club!
On a sunny day, you just can't beat the view here. Â One of the best views in Seattle without question. Â
Food has always been very good, but never crossed into the "great" category for me. Â Service is typically very good.
The one thing I miss is the cigar bar. Â Damn state law should be repealed!
I would take extra time to come back (as I do about once or twice a month).
I'm not a big breakfast person. Not a fan of eggs, ham, sausages in the morning.. but I think if breakfast was like calcutta's.. i might just become one!
FOOD: Quality & Quanity at such reasonable prices! I was actually read to drop quite the heavy dollar bill there, but breakfast prices were all reasonable at $11-$15
Mmm I got the American Breakfast.. has eggs, sausage, potatoes, fruits.. and they were all delicious! My bf got the french toast. 3 huge slices.. and they were delectable as well. Was so HAPPYFULL! :D
Service: Friendly, quick and excellent. I actually customed my eggs to be mixed with mushrooms. They must have really liked me, as they dind't charge me extra for it. And mmm They were delicious!
Atmosphere: The view is spectacular. Mountains with Backdrop of Seattle. It really is breath taking..
I was thinking that.. when the time comes.. maybe I should get married here! Since its so beautiful, the food is delicious, and staff is super friend.. maybe the price will be reasonable as well? ;) haha
But yes.. the eggs! mmm If breakfast was like this.. I would be a happyfull breakfast person :D
This place is a.. Take your date, or your parents to impress them place ;D
Located on the grounds of the Golf Club at Newcastle, every experience here and on the course is ethereal! The venue is beautiful; the views breathtaking, food always delicious-Northwest- fresh, and the staff impeccable. There is even a resident Bagpiper who plays on the green just below the deck at sunset every evening (May through September)! Â
The interior is somewhat old-world-colonial style with wicker, wood, a stone fireplace, overstuffed leather furniture, etc.
On those warm summer days, I wish for more outdoor seating to enjoy the panoramic views of Bellevue, Mercer Island, Lake Washington, Seattle, and the Olympics and beyond!
While the menu is not that complex or sophisticated it offers a nice selection along with the standard bar fare. The bar is well appointed, drinks always delicious, and Jason, my favorite bartender will always take good care of you.
My experiences with the Calcutta Grill always leave me wishing at the end.
The food is decent and competently prepared, but this last time, for Father's Day, I had their "spicy" beef hash; the poached egg was nice, but the hash wasn't very hash-y or spicy, which made we wish the dish was stronger than it was.
On the other hand, some of the other offerings seemed a lot better, and the cold side and dessert buffets were good additions to the Father's Day brunch.
But again, I find myself wishing that the experience was better, the service was kind of slow, the drinks trickled out in kind of a weird pattern, first an Americano, then coffee drinks, then the kid's drinks, and last the Arnold Palmer. Could these have been brought together in a little more organized manner? Maybe. But then the entrees came out in a similar disjointed fashion. One plate of pancakes shows up, then the hash. Then another set of pancakes and a scramble. Then the kid's food, and then finally the omelette. I understand coordinating this stuff coming out of the kitchen can be more difficult with a larger party, but often, things were dropped off without explanation of when the other items were coming.
Overall, we liked the food, and had a good time at the Calcutta Grill. I just wish is was better, and it feels like with a few tweaks to the service and the food, it could have been much better than it was.
When we first moved here, several years ago, I would have given this place 4 stars. The steaks were better than Daniel's and the desserts were just fabulous. Then the dessert chef left. Then they changed the menu. Then the buffet brunch disappeared. Then quality started it's slow, downward trend.
The view is great, especially with the outdoor seating, and the bar food is decent. We haven't been back there in months and really don't have any plans to return.
Too expensive a price for just atmosphere when the food cannot live up to the billing. I'd much rather spend that amount of money, elsewhere.
Of course the view is the reason to go. Â On a sunny day, this is one of the most stunning places in Seattle, and it gets another star.
The food, on the expensive side for the quality, is genera sly okay, but I've had a few misses over the years and rarely anything that I would rate five stars. Â Service is generally fair to good.
What really bothers me about the restaurant is that with a better menu (it's booooooring), a good chef and some attention to detail, this could be a destination restaurant. Â But no one seems to want to put out the effort so it's generally okay, good at times, but never great.
Beautifully located by the golf course. We dropped by because I really wanted steak and fries that night. Â Steak was good, cooked just right and hit the spot. I dressed and acted like a college kid, but they still gave me excellent service. There were two candles on the table, one was not lighted, and I broke it trying to light it with another, quite an embarrassing moment, but there was no unpleasant look. Â Without a word, the service staff came right out and replaced it with a lighted one. Very professional servers.
Review Source:Management at work wanted to take me out for a "bye-bye" lunch with the team since I got a promotion to another team. It ended up to be a choice of where I wanted to go. I decided on a different restaurant until one of my coworkers showed me a list of Dine around Seattle places on the eastside and gave me 3 to choose from. I chose The Calcutta Grill.
Since it's located at the Newcastle Golf Course.. the day was perfect with a gorgeous view of Bellevue and Seattle. And even more perfect was that the hostess sat our party of 7 right next to the big window so we can see everything. It was so pretty!
We all decided to choose our lunch from the 3 course for $15 menu. The choices was pretty hard to choose from but I decided on the smoked duck salad (app), pulled short rib sandwich w/ fries (entree), and the chocolate tower with candied hazelnuts (dessert).
The service was really quick at the beginning and very informative on when our food was coming. We each got our first and second course on good timing until the last course for dessert... We had all finished our entree waiting for the dessert and we had prob waited for a good 30 mins for it to come and the waitress was nice to keep informing us when it will come and apologizing for the delay. We finally was served the dessert and everything was delicious except for maybe the pulled short rib sandwich which had good flavor but a tad bit on the salty side.
Overall great food and service and spectacular view! I was fortunate to have a great team to want to take me out to wish me a grand 'goodbye'. :)
I'm giving them 3 stars today because they've always been pretty consistent with service and food, but after today, they've moved to my "take a chance" list.
We used to eat brunch here when we had guests or for special occasions. Â It was a nice place, the service was excellent and the food was good. Â They stopped the buffet brunch several months ago, which was fine because they had the "Classic Brunch" which was just as good. Â
We went there today w/out of town guests and were disappointed that they no longer had the "classic brunch" on the printed menu - even though it was still shown online. Â Our waiter said they're changing over to the fall/winter menu now. Â
I think we're going to have to find another breakfast place on the eastside that we can count on to be consistent when we have out of town guests.
We brought a family friend there who is in Seattle for a visit.
Great meal and great views. We had tenderloin, ribeye, duck breast and they were pretty good. One of the servings were not cooked to our desire and it was promptly taken back, replaced and we got free deserts. Hence, service was extremely great and was above and beyond our expectations. The peanut tart was superb (my daughter finished an entire serving of it even though she declared to be full after the entree).
View we know is great because I have been there before but due to no fault of their we could not see much of it (it was raining! :))
After an over priced round of golf I was a bit reluctant to have lunch in the grill.....good thing we did because the food is EXCELLENT. Â
LOVED IT.
Great view of the course and exceptional service.
I would go here just for lunch!!
Best of all I didn't have to pay the bill, but I loved the salmon!
Want to impress with a spectacular view? Calcutta Grill at Newcastle Golf club!
Food is above average and reasonable (except the brunch specials on holidays which tend to be very pricey). I've sat here with friends just enjoying wine and appetizers and soaking in the panoramic views of greater
Seattle/Bellevue, Lake Washington. If you get to play the course too, that would be almost be a perfect day.
I'm sure everyone has mentioned it already, but THE VIEW, THE VIEW, THE VIEW! While you are munching away on the delectable delicacies offered at the grill, you have a view of the beautiful golf course as well as the Space Needle and the rest of Seattle. Â
The service is top notch. Â The waiters and waitresses are always on their feet and very friendly.
The food is always great! Â Hot off the grill, every meal is fresh and enough to satisfy your stomach, but not overdo it.
There is a bar kind of separated from the rest of the quiet dining area. Â
Very classy place.
I've been here twice for happy hour...the view from up here is AMAZING. Â I just wish they had more outdoor seating available for happy hour patrons so we can enjoy it. Â On both occasions we ended up sitting inside because all the outdoor seating upstairs was already taken. Â
Happy hour is Mon-Fri from 4-6pm and they have a number of appetizers for $3-7, house wines (red and white) for $3, and draft beer for $3. Â No well drink specials though. Â Food is pretty good and the portions are pretty decent. Â I especially liked the garlic fries and the pulled pork sliders. Â Hubby and friends really liked the pub wings. Â None of us really liked the Mediterranean Flavors (a platter of hummus, tapenade, and bruschetta). Â
Next time, I'd definitely make up an excuse to leave work early so I can get a table outside to enjoy the warm, sunny weather. Â (We only get like 2 months of it, we gotta take advantage while we can!)
I use to work here. All notes as followed are covered in my bias. But here you go:
Amazing view. Take out of town guests here. I use to say it's the third best view of Seattle. Space Needle, Columbia Tower (woman's restroom) and The Golf Club at Newcastle.
Great food. Before I started working here I was only use to what I was comfortable eating. I was a poor post college girl, I wasn't going to gamble on anything I didn't absolutely know I liked. But thanks to this place I am much more well versed in food. The problem is when I go to Seattle magazine and try the place they claim is the best for "blank" I always just think back fondly to Calcutta.
They changed the menu since I was a server so I can't really comment on the current menu. I can say the chiefs try though. Man do they try. The worst thing is that they try to make it cool and memorable and something fun and risky and they get shot down by people ordering fish and chips and burgers with the craziest modifications ever.
They are in a unique pickle of trying to be something to everyone. You can't make every guest happy. If your the type of guest that is so particular then maybe this place isn't for you.
Not all the wait staff is brilliant, but some are. The wine is set up to match the food, not necessarily northwest only.
They mail out coupons sometimes too. Read the fine print. Don't complain that fine print exists. It will always exist, stop giving the poor server a hard time.
Oh and bag piper at sunset during the summer. All summer long. First time I heard him, I got a little teary eyed. It's just something that is unique and fun.
Excellent located and with a nice view of Seattle and Bellevue this restaurant maybe an option if you are around Newcastle and want to pay for a nice view in a very nice place.
The menu is not that complex or sophisticated and offers a nice selection of beef, seafood, fish and pork.
I ordered the New York Strip and the Onion soup. The soup was very good and the steak was average.
The desserts are not good in my opinion, I ordered the Sticky Toffee Pudding Sundae and was not good at all.
They can do better in my opinion because the restaurant is very well located and very nice decorated. The bar is very good and has a nice offer.
They have a fabulous Sunday brunch.
I take everyone that I know to visit here, impeticular anyone from out of town.
The view is one of the best on a nice day you can see to west Seattle.
The only down side is that the menu seems to change an awful lot
but the view far out weighs the menu issues in my book!
If you can find the end of the Sunday brunch buffet, you let me know. Â That thing goes on forever! Â
Swear to Jeebus, they got three huge rooms of food. Â Pretty much anything you could, or would want in a brunch buffet...the usual breakfast fare, of course, then on top of that fresh seafood, sushi, cold cuts, tables full of desserts...ah jeez, I think I just pooped...it's so good both quantity and quality.
Gotta say it's a touch pricey($32/per person), but you definitely get your money's worth.
Check it yo!
The view... what can you say about a view like that? Magnificent!
But.... (sorry)
The food is good not great, service is VERY slow, but the staff is friendly and the view makes it worth the wait.
I'd recommend Sunday Brunch or sit in the bar, buy the fire, and enjoy an app and a drink!
Mother's Day brunch. Â It's an annual event and this was my first time here. Â Amazing view, nice decor, attentive staff, and the food?
Typical fair of handcarved meat, carbs, and meats. Â Was there anything unique or unexpected? Â Nope. Â
It was $50 per person including 20% gratuity. Â A bit steep for a brunch if you ask me. Â I would have opted for Salty's only because they have a chocolate fountain and a larger selection of seafood (oysters, crab, clams, etc).
I wasn't too keen on having the service/ help running behind us throughout the meal. Â I was told that normally, they would have sat us in the main dining room with a gorgeous view of the city. Â Today, we were in another part of the facility. Â
Overall, it was a nice place to take your mom and family. Â Very Suburban.
