Kudos to Caveau for a clever and affordable happy hour: wines $12 and under are $6, and wines $13 and over are half off. Â Very few wines are excluded. Â Unfortunately, this cleverness does not apply to the dining options, as their happy hour offers $1 off certain menu items. Â Its meat and cheese plates are worth the indulgence, but steer clear of the pizzas, which are perfectly average. Â Nonetheless, Caveau's interior is ideal for conversation and relaxation, whether with friends, co-workers or your romantic interest. Â And it goes without saying that the staff are well versed and prepped on every wine they pour.
Review Source:I met a friend for a girls happy hour here a few weeks ago, and overall was very impressed!
The bar is very open and modern, but still manages to feel welcoming.  The big windows allow for excellent Uptown people watching.  They have TVs at the bar as well, although they were all tuned to a muted "The Santa Clause 2" while we were there, which was odd.  The bartender was friendly with helpful recommendations, and even let me have a sample of wine before  committing to a glass.  The food options were tasty-- we tried both an artichoke/prosciutto appetizer and a regular bruschetta.  The only problem (and loss of a star) is that these portions are tiny.  Even at happy hour, it would cost a pretty penny to fill up on snacks.
Most importantly, the happy hour is excellent: from 4-7 every day, $13+ glasses of wine are half off, and $12 and under glasses of wine are $6. Â That's their entire wine menu. Â I love bars that give you a good range of options at happy hour instead of limiting you to a crappy house white. Â This allows you to try out wines you maybe wouldn't ordinarily, and that's awesome.
This 50% off wine menu definitely warrants future visits-- I'll be planning one soon.
This is the perfect happy hour spot. Their extensive wine list becomes VERY reasonably priced during happy hour, and their food is surprisingly delicious. I strongly recommend the cheese plate and the pizzas, they're amazing!
The service here has always been prompt and friendly. Like any wine bar worth it's salt, the staff is very knowledgeable about the list, and helpful if you want a suggestion. The ambiance is swanky yet fairly casual (this is Denver after all), and it fills up quick for happy hour.
Happened upon this bar after wandering around. Â Sunday night special was half price bottles. Â Yes please thank you very much. Â
Enjoyed a bottle of wine, and the meat/cheese combo plate. Â I'm pretty critical of meat and cheese plates. Â The meat was good- 2 salamis and a prosciutto. Â The cheese was maybe lacking. Â A good brie, and ok cheddar, and a machengo, think. Â We could have used a larger palate of cheese flavors. Â And maybe one of the carb option (bread AND crackers) could have been replaced with some almonds and dried fruit....but that's me being picky. Â
Cute place, friendly service, dark and cozy with good music and a Narnia movie playing on the tv (ok, maybe it was a little weird to have a tv there...)
What a wonderful place!
Tiffany mentioned that Caveau used to be a coffee house, and in terms of size, that sounds about right. When you enter, there is a small lounge area over to the right with some leather chairs and a love seat. The rest of the place consists of smaller tables, with a long family style table over to the far left. There are also several tables out front, so if it's a nice day you can sit outside and people watch - that's always fun in this area.
The staff here were wonderful! Friendly, efficient, and really on top of things. We had a large group, and they didn't keep anyone waiting for drinks - even did separate checks... for 25 people! Now that's service.
The wine list is extensive, so you're sure to find something you like. They also have a wonderful menu - mostly tapas, but also some larger dishes. I wanted to try a bite of everything that came out (but I managed to refrain).
I'm really looking forward to going back!
What a cute little place with a mini-patio to match! You gotta love a place where you can relax and have a simple glass of wine.
The happy hour is the best time to go because otherwise the wine is re-donk-ulously overpriced. Still, the ambiance of this place is very nice. High-tops, bench seats, tables, bar seats - anything you could want.
There is of course a huge selection of wine which is great. I have yet to try the food but at least there are munchies available. Always a plus.
A wide variety of people work here too. Diversity is a great thing. They are all nice and ready to serve some vino!
Stopped by here as we heard good things about this spot. People were not kidding. We shared a bottle of wine and a pizza up at the bar and had a great time. Â
The pizza was delicious! I wanted a 2nd but the girlfriend is keeping me healthy. The bottle of wine was discounted due to happy hour and that made it even better. Â
I would give it 5 stars however the bartender was a little snobby. I also didn't like watching servers in the serving station text on their phone when service could have been a little better. I will still be back and wish people to come here as they won't be disapointed.
Great Happy Hour prices!
Really enjoyed a recent visit here, great selection of wines to choose from.
Service was fantastic and friendly.
The pizza was perfect, light crispy crust and melty cheeses with a few fresh toppings to choose from.
nice small outdoor patio.
~just don't forget the code to the bathroom and to press the * key and NOT #....(if there is a video camera in that hallway, I am sure someone got a good laugh out of watching me trying to get into the bathroom! hahaha)
Can't wait to go back!
Before I started going to Caveau Wine Bar, I knew it was somewhere I *wanted* to go. After all, how could I resist a wine bar that is six blocks from my house and that's ranked as one of the Top 25 Wine Bars in the country? (Newsflash: I CAN'T.)
First, let's talk about the happy hour. During happy hour ANY glass of wine that's $12 or under is only $6, and any glass of wine that's more than $12 is HALF OFF. Guh. It's just so good.
Second, the food. Even though it's not an extensive menu, it's an awesome menu. And for my vegetarian self to say that about a small menu is saying something. The gorgonzola and honey bruschetta is a-mah-zing, and the white pizza gets the same "ohgodthisissogood" reaction from me every. single. time.
Third, the people. Every waitstaff person I've met is super nice and friendly and attentive. And you'll regularly see the owners in there working the bar and chatting it up with the patrons. They make it a joy to be there.
And last but not least, GEEKS WHO DRINK! You can get your quiz on and feel classy all at once on Monday nights at 8pm. Plus, who doesn't love to win free booze? It's awesome. And I hear the quiz mistress is pretty rad (and since *I* am the quiz mistress, I can confirm this fact).
All in all, Caveau is worth going to for any reason. If it's chilly outside, get romantical with someone in front of the fireplace. If it's warm outside, sit on the patio and sip some wine in a relatively bum-free part of town. Needless to say, I'm a fan.
Only been here once but was impressed with their wine list. During the day you may feel intimidated since the windows are very dark but it was light and inviting once I stepped inside. I tried a glass of the De Martino and it was very satisfying to my palette. I went during happy hour and there were many filtering in and out. The happy hour isn't cheap but decent. They do offer food and I wanted to try the cheese platter, maybe next time.
Review Source:The word that comes to mind when I step into Caveau is "respite."
For some reason, stepping into this place seems to instantly shrug off any troubles you may have been having during the day. The dim lighting, the low music and the comfy and inviting decor all make impossible to feel burdened by the worries of the "outside world."
The wine list is impressive and was, I believe, just recently nationally ranked in the top 20 in the US. Not too shabby.
I haven't had the chance to eat here yet, but I'm very excited to try some of their food, since there were more than a couple items that looked truly scrumptous last time I was there.
Mind you, this is not a place to come for a cheap drink. Even at happy hour, the cheapest glass you'll get is $6 and those are all whites (at least they were when I went in), which I'm not allowed to drink due to the fact that white wine makes me black out (I know, of all the alcohol, white wine. who knew?), so plan on spending at least $8 a glass.
If you're feeling smart, they have Geeks Who Drink pub quiz on Monday nights at 8. Plus, the quizmaster there just happens to be fellow Yelper and my BFF, Lindsay G. Come drink a glass and test your knowledge.
This is a cute, cozy wine bar. A definite emphasis on cozy. It is in a bank building on the ground level. We came here on a Saturday prior to going to the Avenue Theater to take in a show. Caveau offers a HH on weekend and a small tapas menu.
When we arrived, I was starving and in serious need of food, but we didn't have enough time to have dinner at one of the many restaurants that pepper 17th Avenue. I took a look at the tapas menu and was a bit disappointed, as we had to order several items to quell my hunger.
Our server let us know about HH specials, and in addition to our wine choices, she also brought out an additional wine choice, which worked out for my bf as he didn't like his first choice of wine. I ended up not liking either choice and she happily returned with my second choice wine, which was splendid. The HH wine choices were plentiful. We waited a bit for food. The bf ordered a cheese plate for us to share, the ravioli plate, which include 3 or 4 raviolis and then we ordered a white pizza with Gorgonzola sauce with roasted red peppers drizzled in honey. i wasn't too sure about the pizza with roasted red peppers, as I'm not a huge red pepper fan, but I needed an infusion of food after not eating for more than a few hours.
The pizza was a hit. I quite enjoyed it and polished most of the small (8"-10") pizza by myself. In fact, we didn't leave any food behind, so the food was a hit. If it weren't for HH prices, we'd probably have spent more money than I liked for the tapas we ordered. We'd probably go back, but the bf wasn't a huge fan. He thought the prices were high for what we received.
Love this place! We went there last night for girls night out and they have amazing happy hour options. Everyday from 3-7. Half off glasses of wine over $12 and $6 for any glass under $12.
The staff was very knowledgeable and friendly, our server definitely knew all answers to my 50 questions I was asking about the wines. Also, the cheese plate was amazing! For sure a 5 star place, I can't wait to go back!
This is our neighborhood wine bar so we had to give it a try. Â Our hair salon is also in the same building so it's nice to spend money right here in our neighborhood. Â We had no idea what to expect when we walked through the door.
The bar looks great as soon as you go through the front door. Â Lots of wine on display, dark setting with nice lighting around the bar and seating areas. Â The wine selections are excellent. Â The menu is actually fun to look at. Â There is so much to sample! Â And the staff will pour you samples of just about anything. Â When you do make your selection, the pour is mighty, not the limp wrested pour you get some places. Â They like to fill your glass at Caveau!
The staff is very nice. Â The other patrons are nice. Â Everyone in the building seemed to be in a great mood and conversation with strangers is easy.
This is a great place. Â Try it out!
I really like Caveau. Â It's size, atmosphere, menu and staff are all great.
I was introduced by a friend who knew of their Monday night Geeks Who Drink pub trivia, and we popped in for some friendly competition.
They had beer specials, and we took third. Â All in all great place for a nibble and a glass of wine!
This is, hands down, my most favorite wine bar in the city. EXCELLENT happy hour, great menu, wonderful service, and a comfy atmosphere.
The bar is run by 3 brothers, and one of them is always there to answer any of your questions. They have art up by one of their own servers, which is really cool, and they do a great job of connecting to each and every one of their patrons.
The Monday quiz nights are a great bonus!
Again, if you're looking for an affordable glass of wine...hit up their happy hour! Otherwise, it's a fair priced wine bar with amazing selection and an amazing atmosphere to go with it! HIGHLY recommend.
I've been wanting to try this place since it opened. I dig.
~ good atmosphere.
~ attentive and friendly service.
~ good food.
~ great wine list. I'm a Zin and Spanish Red lover & they had me well covered here. The Anarchy by Cypher was great.
~ Good hh deals.
= a win. and I'll be back.
Finally got to this cute place a couple of weeks ago, even though I'd been meaning to since they opened. Loved the atmosphere, kind of a mix between a bistro and a coffee shop (casual, which I like!) The service was attentive and the waiter was knowledgeable about the wine list. I was impressed that both the Stoller Pinot Noir and the Mohua Sauvignon Blanc were on the list (two of my current faves), and the tapas were a good size, tasty, and affordable.
Go here!
Ever have one of those experiences where you're mentally charting out your Yelp review as the events unfold, flipping and flopping between one-star-heinousness and five-star-fabulosity? Our night at Caveau was like that.
It was a friend's birthday, and she'd done the smart thing by making a reservation for our 10+ group well beforehand. You'd think that, because the word "reservation" has the root "reserve" nestled neatly inside of it, that that would mean something. Not at Caveau. Apparently, the large group before ours had arrived late and were overstaying their welcome. As Caveau only has one large table, this meant our group was crammed into the tiny lounge area for nearly an hour past our so-called "reservation" time before we were seated. Our birthday girl had to actually ASK the staff at Caveau to do their job, i.e. to remind the three lurkers who were casually standing around (after the rest of their group had left), hogging up the massive table that WE were uncomfortably waiting for, that they needed to move it or lose it. Not cool. One star!
On the flip, they offered us a free bottle of under-$35 wine for our inconvenience. It was a nice gesture, and earned them some stars back. Note to Yelp: they don't have many bottles to offer that are under $35.
Once we were seated, our servers (confusing! more than one per table?) were more-or-less on point. We did have to ask repeatedly for things like napkins, silverware, bread, and wine... but eventually received what we needed. At the end of the night, though, we were nicely surprised to learn that our main server girl had split up everybody's tab without even having to be asked to do so... and gotten everything right! Even though I was sitting at the opposite end of the table as my husband, she had ours together. THAT takes skill. Five stars!
The food was tasty, but way overpriced (as many Yelpers have mentioned). Nine dollars for three little ravioli? They were good, but come ON. The mini grilled cheeses were a favorite, as was the bruschetta sampler. The bummer was, they'd already run out of the legendary stuffed mushrooms by the time we ordered! I'll bet it was because of that damn table before ours. We hated them. They are bad and inconsiderate restaurant-goers. And really, who runs out of mushrooms? They're MUSHROOMS for pete's sake. I've got some growing in my front yard as we speak...
Anyhow, there were some highs, there were some lows, but Caveau is still A-OK in my book. Definitely a better spot for an intimate dinner for two than for a large party, as they really do have limited space for people with lots of friends. Sorry to be popular like that, yo.
Love the setting of this place and the wine was great. Â My friend and I asked the waiter about what would go well with the pizza and he suggested a wine that was perfect. Â We also ordered a flight of wine after dinner and each one was unique but worked well together. Â
That being said, it took forever to get service and the pizza was just okay. Â The best thing I can say about it was that the crust - it was thin and crispy. Â The pizza was also over-priced; there are about half a dozen places in Denver that do Italian style pizza better than they do and it is less expensive (Marco's Coal Fired Pizza or even Lala's). Â
We also came here with a <a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2FRestaurant.com&s=0aab4cbd731f3d3b0d1453050d3abc56a8c80bd214e25469c7555b750dca8a51" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://Restaurant.com</a> gift certificate. Â We have used these in the past and we know that if it says alcohol not included, it isn't. Â On this one, there was no such clause, so we were thinking "sweet, we will have a couple glasses of wine and some pizza at a bit of a discount." Â
We even asked the waiter just to be sure and he nodded when we asked if we could apply the balance including the wine to the gift certificate. Â Now he was pretty distracted the whole time he was talking to us and looked like he always had some place more important to be, so shame on us for not double checking. Â
In any case, when we asked for our check, the waiter explained that we had not ordered enough food. Â We were not happy; at that point the manager came over and we explained that there was nothing on the GC about excluding alcohol and we would have ordered differently had the waiter been clear with what we could include or exclude. Â There was a lot of back and forth at which point, I said, "look, at this point, I don't really care what we do, but I want to leave, so you can box up some food for us so that we can pay and go or you can apply the Restaurant's GC to the balance, it is up to you." Â At which point he applied the whole thing to the balance. Â So I guess I won the battle, but not the war. Â If you go here with a Restaurant's GC and it does not say that alcohol is excluded, know that it is.
Now, maybe I am a snot, but I expect better service and food from such a swanky little place. Â In the future, I may hop in for a glass of wine because the wine was pretty darn yummy. Â However, I will not be eating here in the future, nor will I ever purchase a Restaurant's GC for them.
This place is unique for Denver. I love that the staff is well versed at describing each and every wine on the menu. Happy hour specials are $5 for every wine under $12 regularly and half off glasses of wines regularly priced at above $12. Their cheese plate was yummy especially served with Spanish toasted almonds.
I'd go back.
This was my second visit to Caveau. I visited with a friend last spring and really wasn't that impressed; however, I thought I'd give it another try since I was able to get a $25 Restaurant's coupon for $1.
Unfortunately, reading the other reviews here, I didn't know about their great Happy Hour ... which might make the astronomical food/wine prices seem a bit more palatable. My $12 glass of wine was fine; however, I think I could have bought a bottle of the same vintage at my local shop for $15. I get that they have to make money, but the pricing did seem steep.
Speaking of steep - Caveau's "small plates" are REALLY small. 3 ravioli for $9 seems a little ridiculous - same for the stuffed mushrooms. The only bright - and hearty - spot experienced was the meatballs. Really quite good and the one redeeming feature here that bumped this up from a 1 star review.
Our server was adequate. There were long periods of time when she disappeared and didn't stop by to check on things. My friend and I started with a salad and 2 small plates - which was not enough for dinner and so we wanted to order 2 more small plates ... and it took almost 20 minutes to see her again.
As for the <a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2FRestaurant.com&s=0aab4cbd731f3d3b0d1453050d3abc56a8c80bd214e25469c7555b750dca8a51" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://Restaurant.com</a> coupon, the first server who we saw, said "thanks for letting me know ... no problem" and then our 2nd server took a look at it and said "there's no Alcohol allowed on this" .. Which was probably the case, but had we had our first server, something tells me we could have had the alcohol be a part of the bill. There was no worry about it, because the food was so expensive for what you got and so meager in portions that we ended up ordering 7 small plates and, even with $25 off and only one glass of wine total (my friend only had herbal tea) ... our bill was still over $55.
I think I'm done with Caveau. 2 tries and both were remarkably mediocre and pricey.
Oh yeah, entering the restaurant, a very faint smell of old mop water greeted me ... it wasn't that appetizing.
Bye Caveau Wine Bar ....
I'm not a wine person by any means, but I guess you have to start somewhere. To preface this my friend who I went with is a wine whore and knows everything about it.
We stopped in on a Tuesday night and sat at the bar. given the fact it was a Tuesday is was dead, maybe 10 other patrons in the bar. Never the less the service was AWESOME. We were greeted right away and ordered what we wanted. I got a flight and my friend had a glass. Though we were helped by 4 people, our server who brought the wine was pretty much perfect. These people are totally passionate about what they do! He described each of my 3 wines as if they were books, telling me the flavors, where it was from, what they compared to, pretty much EVERYTHING. It was totally awesome.
I would love to head back for happy hour or on a busier night to see the service (not that I doubt it would be any different) but I will be back!
What a fun, classy, and chic place to enjoy a glass, or two, or three, or a bottle of wine.
Great selection of affordable and delicious wines. The knowledgeable and friendly staff will help you make a selection if you need some guidance.
I really enjoy the atmosphere of this establishment and they offer some tasty snacking options when you need some food to go with the wine.
Two things that would improve this already great place:
1) Expand the menu. Â What can I say, I often enjoy my wine with some awesome food. Â Though they offer some nice snack type options, it would be nice to offer more things.
2) Keep the kitchen open later. Â I know it's a pain, but again, late night munchies plus drinking wine means I'm not fully satisfied until I get something to eat.
All in all, a great place to enjoy great wine without having to break the bank.
Caveau is a few short blocks from my apartment, so I'm shocked at myself for not visiting this place right after it opened. I had no idea what I was missing!
From the giant windows outside, you might not guess how cozy this spot actually is on the inside. You'll find a fireplace with comfy couches and lounge chairs, a beautiful bar, plenty of high tops, and large tables with benches for groups. Their happy hour is from 4-7 p.m. everyday, with 1/2 off any glass that's under $13 and $5 glasses for anything below that. Good deal, but one word of caution: if you stay past happy hour, just watch your drink selections because it can add up in the end. I can vouch for the lip-smacking stuffed mushrooms (phenomenal, really) and the baked meatballs in tomato-wine sauce. I also split a house salad with pear and snuck a few bites off a neighbor's cheese plate, which was well presented and tasty to boot.
Our service was also phenomenal, and they made sure everyone in our party (which started with 4 people and expanded to15 over the span of a few hours) was well taken care of.
Note: There's free parking in the lot just south of Caveau, which is awesome because the parking sitch is really gnarly right there on 17th.
This place is definitely worth checking out!
I have been dreaming of their stuffed mushrooms for nearly 12 hours now. OMFG (yes, I'm a 13 year old girl) they are so good! I wished I had ordered the plate all for myself after I realized how delicious they were. I really enjoyed the baked meatballs as well but next to these mushrooms, the meatballs became the ugly sister.
Now for the wine portion of the wine bar. $5 wines!! At one point in the evening (4 glasses of wine later), I started to convince myself that the servers were tricking us. I swore I was seeing the same bottle come back to fill the other wine glasses at the table and I just couldn't see how we were all drinking the same wine! Once I really started to pay attention, I realized they were all different and I was imagining all of it...what was in those mushrooms?!
I liked everything about this place. Although I don't have the eye of my interior decorating friend, I thought the place was cute. My favorite part about the little details was the intentional wine stain on the top left corner of all their menus. I like the bench seating but considering the number of people we had, it just didn't work. I have a small bladder and I was sitting in the middle. Sorry for making everyone get up every time I needed to go. Â Why didn't I think to move to the outside?
This is a great spot with amazing wines. The perfect variety for your mood. HH is  phenomenal - the selection is outstanding and so is the service.
The only 2 issues I had with this place:
1) the seating - bench or family style is ok, but with a bar atmosphere (sophisticated or not) chairs just tend to work better, and there is a lot of unused space because of the way the tables are arranged and the support columns which unfortunately are very poorly placed.
2) the windows - I love big picture windows - give me floor to ceiling - I love it - BUT Caveau is charming - there is fireplace seating, exposed brick, and a very unique and sexy wine list - throw some draperies up! It would warm up the room and give it the sexy ambiance that is missing.
Awesome all around! Â This is a fantastic place to stop, have a glass of wine, maybe a quick bite (the meatballs & wine basket are favorites), and warm up by the fire.
Great happy hour and keep an eye out for their complimentary tastings. Â The tastings are always fun, but get there early as they fill up FAST!
This place is around the corner from my apartment, and I LOVE it!
First of all, the happy hour is ridiculous, 4-7 weekdays and all day on Sunday, $5 per glass for all glasses under $12 and half off any glass over $12. Â If that doesn't make this automatic once a week happy hour you're crazy.
Second, the food. Â The food is really fucking good. Â I recommend the mussels (ask for extra bread, you'll need it) and the white pizza with pears and gorgonzola...mmmmmmmmm!!!!!! Â I'm sure the other stuff they have is awesome too, I just haven't gotten past the mussels. Â However, the olive plate is kind of a ripoff, so avoid it, unless you're nuts about olives. Â
Now, the wine. Â The goddamn wine people. Â The sommeliers really know what they're doing, tell them what you like and they'll recommend something super tasty. Â They also know how to pair with whatever you're eating off of the delicious but slightly limited menu.
The service isn't amazing, unless you get Joe, but the other guys are nice enough and if you flag them down they'll come right to you.
Joe knows his shit and is really awesome, tip him a lot.
All in all, go for happy hour, on a sunday, or any other time, especially if you want to impress a date without going to some fuckshitshow in lodo and instead have a nice conversation.
PS - tell them it's your birthday and they'll bring champagne. Â it'd better be your fucking birthday, though.
The first time I searched for Caveau, nothing turned up... now there are 27+ reviews, and I couldn't be happier. Â
We visited on a Sunday night, and I'm disappointed that I didn't notice the 1/2 off wine bottle offer for Sundays! Â I did end up drinking a bottle by myself. Â BF had a couple of beers and ended with a sweet German wine. Â The meat and cheese plate was yummy, too. Â
Now, the service. Â Spot-On! Â I wanted to try something new. Â I drink a lot of wine, so going to a wine bar I figured I should try something a little out of the ordinary... Moscato-Asti. Â It's a sweet white, slightly sparkling. Â They called it "effervescence" but I'm not that fancy. Â Delicious is what I would call it. Â Yes, I had four glasses. Â What I really liked about the staff is that they weren't walking around with noses in the air pretending they had better things to do. Â They were people I could actually have an intelligent conversation with and enjoy. Â Sure they work at a wine bar, but when you get to the core of it, they'd guzzle PBR with you, too. Â Definitely approachable and made great recommendations. Â
And since Caveau is only a block from my house, I'll be back!
If you are from out-of-town, this is one of the first places you should try in the Mile High City.
Caveau Wine Bar has a warm and cozy atmosphere, and a friendly, knowledgeable staff! They were extremely helpful in paring food selections with our choices of wine. Everything we tried was perfectly prepared and the presentations were done beautifully. I definitely will be back to try other menu items that I didn't get a chance to taste this first time around.
(You can only eat so much food & drink so much wine - no matter what anyone tells you!)
P.S. They have a great black & red t-shirt for sale. A graphic red wine bottle on an all black t-shirt. Elegant for a "T". We bought one.
This wine bar used to be a coffee shop and it still has that comfy, chatty feel to it, but it's darker and sexier with the dim lighting and wine choices. Nick and I had the 5280 menu here the other night and I really enjoyed it.
They do an included wine pairing with their menu here (a little less than half a glass so more like a tasting, but I thought it was a good amount) and when the bartender gave use champagne flutes for our first pairing I was already in love. We had a Prosecco that you could pair with a tomato bisque or salad. Nick had soup; I had salad. The salad was mixed greens, dried cranberries, walnuts, cheese and an orange vinaigrette. Fairly simple, but quite delightful.
For our entrees, Nick chose a pasta in a Gorgonzola cream sauce (delicious! I actually had a little bit of order envy) and I chose the salmon with rice. The salmon was fairly basic, but the accompanying rice was really good. My entrée was paired with a Tempranillo and Nick had a white wine that did an amazing job at cutting through the heavy cheese flavor of the Gorgonzola sauce. I can't remember a better pairing in recent history of dining out so kudos to Caveau for that.
We ended out meal with an asti, very sweet wine, that again was perfectly paired with the food. In this case the food was a heavenly chocolate espresso crème brulee.
While most of the items we ordered don't seem to be on the regular menu there were plenty of items on the menu I'd like to try. The menu is fairly small and simple with things like Italian meatballs and cheese and meat plates. They have happy hour from 4 to 7 pm and they even had it on Sunday when we were there. Overall, this is a nice casual wine bar with some terrific deals at happy hour and a nice, succinct menu.
I was so excited to discover this place last Wednesday night, it prompted my first yelp review! Â They have an amazing selection of wines by the glass, one of the best I've seen in Denver, all half off until 7 PM. Â Our server gave all us girls great advice on our wines depending on what we liked. Â I ordered a Ridge Zinfandel blend that was phenomenal, bargain priced at $20, only $10 at happy hour! Â I haven't tried the food yet, but it looked yummy and I'll be back soon to test it out. Â They had a great free wine tasting going on too. Â The atmosphere was cozy for a girls night or a date. Â I can't wait to go back!
OK, a little update from my first review. Â I still love this place - great wine, great food, great service - but if you are looking for a scene, this isn't it. Â Unless you are a guy. Â My girlfriends teased me for taking them there because at one point there were literally 30 women and 3 men in the entire place (we counted). Â This didn't bother me, hence my 5 star rating, but if you are looking for more co-ed mix, try somewhere else!
Yet another update ... this place is getting so hot you have to get there early for a table! Â I still love it but it can be a smidge crowded. Â On the bright side, there's a little bit better mix of people for my girlfriends who are interested in more than wine. Â Love the Cru Vin Dogs! Â Try it... Oh, and you definitely want Bill as your server.
I have been here a few times and I am just in love with the feel and the food and wine. Noce small plates and great wine for good prices!!
This place is locally owned and you really feel at home here. The service is very attentive and knows their wine!!!
Try the meatballs they are so good!!!
Thank you for inviting me Nicole!
I loved the atmosphere of this place. Â It was small, but I felt like we had a lot of space to ourselves. Â Our spot by the window was a perfect little corner for 4. Â
I tried the Planella, which is a spanish blend. Â I do not drink much red wine, unless their is fruit in it, but I really enjoyed it. Â It was easy to drink and made me feel nice and warm. Â
I'm sure Nic and I will be back to try some of thier culinary selections. Â
Our sever was so knowledgeable and really nice. Â She didn't make me feel like a dork for asking what kind of wine to get. Â I'm glad I took her suggestion and ventured out of my comfort zone. Â
Great pre party stop or destination in itself.
I went here last night with a large group of friends for the last stop of a birthday party. I only started drinking wine these past two years and most people that love it talk circles around around me. I do know what I like though and they have a sizable selection. They also have some artisan and local beers available for those in your group that still think wine is for uppity types.
What really sealed the deal for me though was that the staff were able to make good recommendations and then at the end of the night our server let me know that all open bottles were now $5 a glass...including a more expensive Oregon pinot I eyed earlier. I love that kind of thoughtfulness.
I'm looking forwarding to going back for happy hour, which apparently involves some glasses more than half price off. There's also a tapas menu, but nothing immediately grabbed me there. Maybe they'll let me take in a cupcake from next door...yes, cupcakes and wines...i'm just that refined.
So excited to be the first to Yelp Caveau!
After driving by this about 30 times, I finally remembered to Google the name of the business and see what is up! Â Caveau has been open for about one month, and they already offer up a great happy hour from 4-7 pm every day! Â All glasses of wine $12 and under are just $5, and any glass of wine over $13 is half off. Â There are also beer specials if you're that kind of person!
The decor is nice - winey decor, along with stone and a gas fireplace - Â though I wish there were more comfy booths/couches instead of so many tables. Â I think the space is ideal for a lounge-type atmosphere where you can spend several hours, as opposed to sitting at a table.
There was three of us tonight, and so we had 9 glasses of wine. Â I can tell you that the wine list is very well-crafted! Â While you might not see something that you know immediately, there are several gems on there. Â My personal favorite of the evening was the Planella Spanish blend from Montsant (Mazuelo, Syrah, Garnacha, and Cabernet - stellar!).
Service was very attentive and warm - Bill made many recommendations concerning the list, which was appreciated.
We tried several items off of their food menu: Â olive plate, bruschetta, short rib, sweet corn ravioli. Â All was quite good, though nothing made me swoon. Â This is a WINE bar after all, so they're forgiven for "just good" food. Â Really, you just need something to nosh on while you imbibe. Â ;)
I will most definitely be back to work my way through their by-the-glass list. Â I look forward to their wine education events that will be forthcoming! Â Overall, an excellent addition to the Uptown neighborhood!
