Good atmosphere, upholds the Irish pub house feel. I have not tried a substantial amount of the menu but judging off two entrees, the food is okay. The shepherd's pie was on point and good bang for your buck at $11. The late night burger flight was not as pleasant as the beef, lamb, and salmon sliders were a bit dry.

Their drink menu reflects that of the Irish pub house -- the mixed beers and ciders are fun to try. The Poor Man's Black Velvet (Guinness and Magner's cider) is my favorite.

Where the Knot lacks is service. Sitting at the bar or the couple tables next to the bar is okay, and service during peak dinner hours is even okay, but boy does the service blow after dinner hours. The one waiter (white, blond hair, glasses) can make circles around your table without seeing you, it's incredible.

A nice change-up because of its Irish pub menu compared to other Evanston restaurants bars but I wouldn't feel confident stacking The Knot to any Irish pubs anywhere outside of Evanston.

This is a review of the "Moira's Afternoon Tea" they feature on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 2PM to 4PM.

+ Reasonably priced at $17 per person (Better than spending up to $50 downtown)
+ Cute tea cups, spoons, and pastry tower

+/- Pastries and finger sandwiches were "ok".  Nothing special but not horrible either.

    - Poor service
    1) Came in, waited by the area that says "Please wait to be seated". No one came. After 5 mins of standing up (no eye contact from the bar tender who was close to where I was standing), I went straight to the dining room.  1 busboy (no eye contact either), 1 waitress.  I finally stopped the waitress and said I had reservations for tea.  Was promptly seated.
    2) My tea mates came, we were given our tea and pastries. After that, no more contact from the waitress.  A lady with an Irish accent came by our table and asked how we were doing.  She was nice.  Our busboy was for sure bored out of his mind.  No response everytime we say "thank you" when he clears out our dishes.  Waitress had that faraway look in her eyes and didn't even smile.  Our only contact with her was when she brought our tea, and she gave our check.  I was expecting a warmer interaction.

I wished that Irish lady was our waitress.  She was nicer.  If all staff were like her, I'd probably go back here.  (We had plans to go back to check out the pub when they have Irish Music and Irish Storytelling events but not rarin' to go anymore because of our experience.)

Would not recommend the Afternoon Tea.

I came here only once and got their Irish chicken soup (described to me by the waitress as "chicken noodle soup, only with potatoes). Well, I literally got one piece of potato in my soup, and the portion was pretty small - and I paid $5 for it. Maybe I'll try their other food later, but until someone can convince me otherwise (and until my diet is over), I probably will not be back.

Perfect on cold nights when you want some comfort food and a pint.  Magner's is always on tap.  Shepherd's Pis is pretty good.  Fries good, especially with curry sauce.  Corned beef is super tender.  Attentive staff, fast service, comfortable atmosphere.  A go-to place to relax and enjoy an evening.

We came here on a Tuesday night for the Celtic Music Sessions. On this particular night they also had Morris Dancing. How cool was that!!!! The music was great fun to listen to and the musicians were quite good.

We ate supper here while enjoying the music (No cover charge BTW). I had the Celtic Combo. The fish was very good, the corned beef and cabbage was pretty good and the lamb stew was not something I would order again. Christopher had the pork chop dinner, which was very good, but for the price, he felt they should have given him two chops rather than one. I brought home some of the Pea Wack Soup for Mom. She really liked it and so did I.

For dessert, Christopher had the Sticky Toffee Pudding and I had Spotted Dick. (Had to try it). The pudding was really good. My (I won't say it) dessert was too dry, even with the sauce. I would not get it again.

This is a place where I felt very comfortable and look forward to visiting again.

This is a true Irish Pub! Great Food, Beer and Personalities. The Bartenders are really great and keep the evening flowing.

From my travels throughout Ireland to the years I spent in the Irish establishments of Woodside, Queens, I have eaten a lot of shepherd's pie - and, I should mention that I adore shepherd's pie. The Celtic Knot's is among the best I've had and I highly recommend it! Alas, it's the only thing I recommend because it's so good, I eat it every time I dine here!

We visited with family on a Sunday afternoon.  The place is nice, clean, and well appointed.  All the staff was nice to us also.  I had the Celtic combination, which was smaller portions of lamb stew, fish and chips, and corned beef and cabbage.  The lamb stew was excellent and worth a return, as was the corned beef and cabbage.  However, the fish was dreadfully bad.  Almost all breading, very greasy, no fish flavor.  3 of us at the table had fish and chips and all agreed it was basically inedible.  The kids had hamburgers and they were pleased.  There was a guitarist playing who was very enjoyable.  We would return, definitely, we just would avoid the fish.

I have a bunch of friends who are pub fans so the wound up dragging me here.  I have to admit, its a classic pub. It looks like a pub. It smells like a pub and it has lousy food like a classic British pub. Gastro pub it ain't. I had the bangers and mash. The bangers were a little skinny, the mash was OK, and the beans came out of a can of Campbell's. If I could rate places on a continuum I'd probably give it a 2.6.

Service was pleasant... Its an OK place to go drink Guinness and Irish whiskey.

Typically I feel like a big old hassle when I order a cocktail at an Irish pub.  I dunno what it is but I'm half-convinced that the bartender is going to spit in my drink because I didn't order a Guinness.

This was my first visit to the Celtic Knot and I gotta say, me likey!  The bar is really pretty and has lots of liquors.  The bf and I both ordered cocktails and they were delightful.  The bf was sad there weren't any TVs but I silently thanked the lord that there weren't.  I mean, whatever happened to the days when people looked and talked to each other instead of watching men on TV playing with one ball or staring at their phones?

Prices were reasonable and it smelled like winter inside.  I'd be interested to see what the food is like.  I'd like to return but I doubt the bf will.  Looks like my solo trips to Evanston will know include the Celtic Knot and the Chicken Shack!

My all time favorite bar/pub in Evanston.
It's such a great, relaxed atmosphere--and they have live music that is pretty good.

The beer is as good as it get in Evanston and their food is fantastic as well.  The chips  and gravy are absolutely delicioius.
That paired with great beer and the warm ambiance--what more can you ask for?

It kills me to see that this place doesn't have a better rating. My roommate and I go here once a week for their wonderful food and live music. The pasty is my personal favorite.

The environment is warm and friendly and I have gotten to know several members of the staff. I love the knot!

I am truly obsessed with the Knot. It's right below my apartment and I love to think of it as my own personal "Central Perk" or "McClaren's." I'm a regular here and know many of the Knot's friendly staff by name now.

I have never been disappointed by food or drink here. I usually get the Cheese and Toast with Pesto-- a fancy grilled cheese with huge slices of tomatoes and a generous smear of pesto and a side of goat cheese to accompany my fries. (You seriously must try that.) It's consistently delicious and I crave it way too often. I've also tried their mozzarella tomato dish "without the bread." It was good, the mozz and tomatoes were both very fresh, but the taste in general didn't wow me. I'd stick with either the Cheese and Toast or the Fried Goat cheese with Mesclun greens salad-- but I'm also a vegetarian so I'm a bit limited to those dishes. :)

I love bringing friends and family here, but I will say this--- there's something about lunch here. Not sure if it's like their "B team" or what, but the service is weirdly slow and a bit awkward compared to their normal efficiency.

Overall a wonderful place that I will continue to support as long as I live in Evanston!

I've been forced to eat here a few times and the food has always been mediocre at best, especially when considering the price and limited options.

Last night, however, I actually spent 3 hours being sick after eating the overly greasy and pretty much unremarkable fish and chips.

Next time people want to go to the Knot, I'll be sure to explain to them with great detail why it's a bad idea.

I came here with a group of friends/coworkers on a Sunday night. They're open later than some of the other bars in Evanston on Sundays (we tried to go to Prarie Moon but they were already on last call by the time we arrived).

I only got a pear cider, so I don't have much to stay since I didn't order anything else. I requested a cocktail menu but was told that they don't have one. I thought that it was puzzling for a bar, I guess they're trying to be super authentic and Celtic and all (whatever that means). Also the music was oddly folky but not normal folky (maybe Celtic folky? hehe). Overall, cute atmosphere and I hear they make a mean chicken pot pie.

This was the place where I went on a first date with my future life partner/Manfriend, so I'm a bit starry-eyed when it comes to this place, but with good reason.

Warm atmosphere, great drinks, absolutely stellar steaks (surprisingly), outrageous onion rings, and the Irish specialities are excellent as well. Took a friend of mine (who happens to live in Ireland and is actually Irish), and he loved it. That means something, you know?

The staff is generally great. The owner (I think) is a really sweet lady who recognizes me and the Manfriend whenever we come in. This place is perfect on a cold winter's night, though I go year-round! Excellent date place, too.

Sometimes, the restaurant can get a little busy, but I've never had too many problems with unobservant wait-staff. Overall, a wonderful place with delicious food. A tad pricey, I suppose, but you pay for a great experience as well as great food.

Oh, and the desserts! Holy catfish, Batman! They are so, so good. The sticky toffee pudding is to. Die. For. Try it. Seriously. Absolutely delicious.

To me, this was just another typical Irish bar but without the charm. It is an okay place to hang out at if you have no other options but I wouldn't go out of my way to go here. As an aside, apparently the Irish Car Bomb is politically incorrect so it's not an option. Even if you list out the ingredients of the drink they are unwilling to put those together for you.

omg what kind of restaurant has their customers wait 30 to 45 minutes for a waitress to take our order!! thats ridiculous!  We were a party of 7...and NONE of their wait staff had the courtesy to acknowledge we were there!! RIDICULOUS! they were not even that busy..they had a couple empty tables around us.

OVERALL WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE! unfortunately can't talk about the food...wasn't even able to order anything.  thank goodness for a buff joes in the area!

    I love the Knot.

The food is delicious, they pour great pints, and the staff is absolutely lovely! Great cozy place to chat, and the live music is awesome.

I agree that it's a little on the pricey side, but I'm willing to pay for the atmosphere and service. Also, they have FANTASTIC $3 bottled beer specials! The most recent was Anchor's Humming Ale. So get in there.

You'll find me at the bar with a Bushmill's in hand.

Pretty decent Irish pub. Good pours of Guinness, Harp's, and Smithwick's. The fish and chips are really satisfying, as are the chicken fingers, which are prepared the same way (make sure that if you order anything with fries you get the curry sauce; well worth the $1 IMHO). Shepherd's pie is good, and the hamburger is one of the better ones in the area. The one time I had it, the brunch was very good. Live music on Mondays (bluegrass) and Tuesdays (Irish music) is a very nice perk.

The main reason this place doesn't get more stars from me is the price. It's quite steep; Guinness runs $7.25, fish and chips run $12 for a fairly small plate, etc. Just a little too steep for me to be a regular.

I'll admit that my city girl snobbery was in high gear when my friends said we were having our monthly afternoon tea in Evanston, but I was pleasantly surprised by The Celtic Knot.

I've never been to England, but when I imagine a restaurant and pub in the English countryside, the Celtic Knot's interior is exactly what I picture. It was cozy and homey and a perfect place for a spot of tea and girl talk.

Our server was a bit frazzled, but she kept up with the patrons as best she could. She brought over our lovely little tea pots (sitting on pedestals containing a candle for continuous warming) and our three tiers of treats. Already we could tell that The Celtic Knot was way better than our last tea at a well known spot in River North.

The tea sammie selection was basic - ham, salmon, and egg salad - and were good, but a touch bland. Then again, I've heard the English like their food bland. The mini-scones were good. They weren't fresh, but they were decent and came with jam and whipped cream. Super yum! The desserts were the best part. A little smidgen of moist chocolate cake, a mini strawberry tart, and a little piece of chocolate in the shape of a tea mug that was filled with caramel and chocolate mousse. Drooool!!!

The tea was good. They offer black tea, but have a selection of other choices if you would like something different. We all decided on the black tea to make things easier. Our server did forget the cream and sugar, but was quick to supply it once we reminded her.

All in all, The Celtic Knot has a nice little tea service that is very affordable. I wouldn't mind grabbing my compass and trekking back to Evanston to try the food...the corned beef and cabbage at the table next to us smelled divine!

An Irish pub that serves afternoon tea! I didn't know what to expect with an Irish afternoon tea service, but they definitely do it well here. The cozy pub had a separate dining room. There's something about being in an Irish pub in fall that makes it even more comfortable and homey.

To serve the tea, they have pretty white plates rimmed with gold and matching teapots. It added a special touch to this unexpected afternoon tea. We were served the house Irish tea which were teabags resting in the pot, but well steeped. I, too, was disappointed that they went this route. With the continued water refills, it dilutes the tea leaves, so near the end of the tea, the tea itself weakened.

The all important tea caddy full of sandwiches, scones, and pastries was delicious. They had a wide selection of sandwiches ranging from smoked salmon to ham. For our group, sammies are vitally important as we're hungry and need sustenance. For scones, the Celtic Knot served cute, little mini scones accompanied by whipped cream, jam, and Irish butter. Their chocolate treats were the best part of this afternoon tea. Each person got a sliver of rich chocolate cake best slathered up with some whipped cream, a tart shell filled with whipped cream and topped with a strawberry, and a chocolate cup filled with an amazing chocolate, caramel ganache. All in all, the food served was tasty, delicious, and filling.

We had one server who handled our needs well like getting some cream to accompany the tea and water. She handled our big group pretty well on a busy Halloween eve Saturday. Overall, I had a great time up in Evanston for a delightful afternoon tea. The Celtic Knot does a fantastic tea service that rivals even the fanciest of Chicago's hotels.

Fun fact: This is where I had my 21st birthday dinner back when it was Chapin's on Church.  I think.  My old mind tends to forget details.

When this was chosen as our ladies' tea location for October nearly a decade later I'll admit, I was skeptical.  I don't usually think Irish pubs for fancy tea and the few tea reviews here on Yelp were scathing.  That being said, I always have fun with the tea ladies, I have a soft spot in my  heart for Evanston, and I love stuff I can drive to and park easily (and cheaply) so off I went.  When I showed up I was seated at a table with pretty, fancy china and....5 placesettings.  For 7 of us.  I'm not sure where the number confusion came from, but we were quickly switched to a bigger table.  Our waitress was a champ through the whole tea.  She did indeed appear to be the only server but she was very attentive and upbeat.

The tea served is bagged - no loose leaf, no individual pots.  The standard tea is an Irish black tea, but they do have a menu available if you want to choose something else.  We all decided the black tea was fine (except for one strange tea-lady who only drinks coffee).   The waitress refilled out pots whenever we ran out of water, which was often.   Tea snacks were finger sandwiches (lox, ham, and egg salad - pipe up when ordering if you're a vegetarian or don't like one of those varieties), mini scones, and an assortment of pastries (Including one chocolate-caramel ganache thing in a chocolate cup.  My God, so good.)

Okay, so was this the BEST tea I've ever been to?  No.  It's not even the close to the best in Chicago.  But it is super affordable - $16.95 and super easy parking across the street in the library lot or on the street.   Service was better than we got at the Palmer House, and we never felt rushed to leave.  All in all, a totally satisfying tea experience.

What a delightfully odd and wonderful find!  The Celtic Knot serves an afternoon tea, and it is as good (or better dare I say) than some of the super swank downtown Chicago teas my group and I have attended and paid much more for in the past.

OK, yes. Its an Irish pub, but it is one of the nicer ones, interior wise. There is a wall that separates the dining room from the bar, and is nicely decorated.  The tables and chairs are typical of a pub though so don't expect to sit too long (ow)

The tea is served in really pretty white and gold china. They typically only serve one tea (black) but you can request another if you really don't want that. I was a little sad to see tea bags inside the pot instead of loose tea, but they brewed it well and it was delicious, not needing any honey or milk.

The three tiered tray of goodies included 3 types of finger sandwiches (an egg salad which was my favourite, a lox and what I think was ham).  There were also tiny scones that came with butter, clotted cream and raspberry jam.  The top tier had little chocolate cups filled with caramel and chocolate, strawberry tarts and chocolate cake.

There seemed to be only one waitress when we were there but she did really well taking care of us, even with 3 other tables occupied (and one of those being a group of cranky, demanding elders). Plus it was really reasonably priced. I dont know the cost per person, but there were 7 of us and my share including tax and tip was $21.

I would not hesitate to go back for tea again, as well as to see what their regular menu is like.  A great find in Evanston!

I LOVE the Celtic Knot - if you eat here you HAVE to get the cupcake of the month, especially if it involves buttercream frosting. Mmmm, delicious.

I've had the salmon and the chicken pot pie in my most recent two visits. The food was yummy, and the portions were big enough that I had leftovers to take home.

Try to come in when they have live music on Monday nights!

I came here for a party last night in the "snug" aka the super cozy brick-walled room in the back. It was a lot of fun. There seemed to be a package where the Celtic Knot provided many bottles of red and white wine and a buffet-style appetizer selection. We had sausage rolls, the brie and apple parcels, quite possibly the most delicious quesadilla I have had in a long time, crisps, and chips with served with gravy and curry. I LOVE CHIPS AND CURRY!

Anyway, then we got to order off the menu. I had the pea wack soup (super thick, lots of pea flavor, lots of ham) and beans on toast. I've eaten here before and the food is pretty decent, though not my favorite. The fun part is getting drunk (mmm, I love/hate you Magner's Cider!) with your friends and chitchatting the night away. We even played darts. I got (threw?) a bullseye!

The staff were ever so gracious. Checking up on us for drinks, refilling waters, even slicing a cake we brought in and passing them out on pretty plates. I had such a good time here and will definitely return to satiate a chips and curry craving.

Goodness gracious, they have raised food prices in here.  Thankfully the quality has not declined.  I hadn't eaten a meal here in quite some time, but I still visit every so often for drinks.

Sunday night I enjoyed a lovely meal in the dining room, but the pub area is a much cozier date setting.  We heard occasional...outbursts? snippets? serenades? of opera from a gentleman sitting at the bar.  He was pretty good, and loud too.

After some epic menu indecision, I decided on something low-key:  the turkey burger with cheddar and onion rings.  Usually turkey burgers are bland, but this one was surprisingly flavorful, with no adornment but the cheese.  I didn't care much for the onion rings, but my date's fish and chips were solid as usual.

Dessert was the whiskey-caramel bread pudding.  I could definitely taste the whiskey in the sauce, so kudos for not making a token effort.  The bread pudding was solid, maybe a B to B+.

Celtic Knot is a versatile place for dinner, lunch, late-night carousing, or sedate afternoon sipping.  I still wish that they would expand their beer offerings though.  Beamish?  Murphy's?  Belhaven?  A couple of Belgian or German imports?  Please?

Those that know me, know that I don't like Irish bars. But, I like this one. For one thing, the owner is a fantastic, cool woman. The restaurant itself is bright and lively. The drinks are great, and the bartender is another cool woman. It's also open pretty late for Evanston.

And . . . they have the Scotch Egg. What is the Scotch Egg, you ask? It's everything I like.

It's a hardboiled egg, covered with a layer of sausage and deep fried. It's served cold here, but I've also had it . . . hot. Mmmm! It comes on a bed of lettuce, with mustard on the side for dipping. Delicious.

Do not fear the Scotch Egg!

This is one of the only places that you can go to in Evanston that is open past 11 pm. It's a very unassuming and simple place, but it's a decent choice for "late-night" fun times in Evanston.

That said, I really enjoy the drinks here. I usually try to mix it up, but I do love the Magner's. If you're going to get food, I highly recommend the french fries with curry sauce, the cupcake of the month, and the bread pudding. The salad with goat cheese is also wonderful.

If you're looking for a good, cold-weather place to go, the Knot is a great choice.

My Love and I went here after a fabulous meal next door at Everest, in search of a warm good-for-winter alcoholic beverage and an inviting but romantic atmosphere.

The restaurant wasn't too busy but the bar was full. All patrons were couples, whether romantic, business like, or just drinking buddies in an intimate atmosphere where they could be seated closely for warmth and great times.

The bartender was nice but kept to himself and the hostess was a joy as well. The lights are set really low and the mirror with Irish commemoratives as the bar back was a nice touch. It was quiet and not at all a frat boy bar or run of the mill Irish pub knock off.

The next time I'm perusing the Evanston area and feel in need a delicious fresh whipped Irish coffee I will for sure, stop in to the Celtic Knot.

I love this place.  For a college town, Evanston shuts down pretty early, but this place keeps its kitchen open 'til midnight almost every night, and they've got some great late night bar grub, including some really tasty fish and chips, a great 1/2 pound burger and fries, calamari, as well as more ethnically Irish fare, like Shepherd's Pie and Guinness Pasty (which I MUST try).

They've also got a great collection of beers, and I'm a big fan of their "Dark and Tan" - half Harp lager on the bottom, half Guinness on top.  Mm, mm, mm, mm, mmmm, toasty!

The service is always friendly and welcoming, and after three visits, at least one of the wait staff recognizes us - of course, we're approaching triple the average age of most of the other customers, so we probably stand out a bit - but we like it so much, we're becoming semi-regulars.  There's a variety of live music on various nights, and on a recent Saturday night, there was a mob of college kids, one of whom was armed with a folk guitar, so there was free live music that night, too.

They have a "Robbie Burns" night coming up, and they promise/threaten:  "Haggis will be served!"

So far, the closest I've had to real English chip shop fish and chips. The fish was very nearly spot-on- the batter was pretty close to authentic, and the fish was cod- I'm used to haddock, but it was flaky and moist. The chips weren't quite up to my authenticity standards- they were not thick enough (our chips are sort of like your steak fries) and too crispy- a good chip shop chip should be sort of floppy, so they can soak up loads of vinegar. The whole thing was presented on fake (wax paper) newsprint which was rather quaint, I suppose- but in a sit-down chip shop you wouldn't get it on newsprint, as that's only for takeaways.

I wish they'd had mushy peas to go with my fish, but they did have Heinz Baked Beans, so I had them. They also provided me with malt vinegar (a must) and tartar sauce (which I discarded, Brits don't use the stuff on fish and chips- this is an American thing).

Though it's not on the drinks menu, they will make a pint of shandy for you. I was quite pleased, though it didn't come in a proper pint glass.

On a previous stop here I had the chips with curry sauce- these are pretty close to what you'd get to a chip shop as well, the closest thing I've had to proper curry chips since I've been in the US. (What I wouldn't give for a real fish and chip shop to open up here. I'd personally keep the place in business!)

They have live (folksy) music and the lighting gives the place a good pub ambiance. Service was fast, our server (it said 'Ruth' on the cheque) was very friendly and nice.

I've got to try a few other menu items and see how they measure up, but all in all, this gets my British stamp of approval.

I was here for the Burns Supper a couple nights ago -- celebrated the great Scots' life with a bit of Haggis and scotch -- both were delicious.  They had a flight of Glenlivet, Talisker and Laphroaig which was great... a nice variety with very distinct characteristics.   The haggis was made special for this event and was quite as good as it gets.  Don't believe the haggis horror stories you've heard - that is some good sustenance, accompanied by neeps and tatties.

I also had the fish and chips, quite respectable.  I agree with John B. in that the portions could be a little larger for the price, but the flavor and batter were right on, malt vinegar available along with Colman's mustard to dip the chips in (a little habit of mine...).  Great beer selection as well.

The service was a bit confused but the situation was a bit confusing with a packed house, singing, poetry and plenty of kilted men drinking scotch -- I think they did admirably considering.

    I'll definitely go back.

This place is nicer than you'd expect, and I don't mean that to be condescending. I guess I wasn't expecting tablecloths. I am easily amused.

You enter into the bar area, which is a little cramped, since the bar runs parallel to the restaurant and is set off by a wall. So you have to go through the narrow passage behind the bar stools to get to the dining room. But if you're alone, eating at the bar seems like it would be a good option -- cheerier that eating by yourself in the dining room. Unless that's what you want, of course. And there's outdoor seating in the warmer months, so hurrah for that.

There's an interesting mix of items on the menu. Some of it is standard Irish pub fare -- fish n chips, shepherd's pie, bangers and mash. Some of it -- chicken marsala, beef teriyaki -- is not. I had the Celtic Collection, which is a sampler of lamb stew, fish n chips, corned beef and cabbage. The food was good, but for the price, I felt the portions were small. For example, literally one small chunk of corned beef, and one piece of fish.

Service is a little slow, but very welcoming. And grown-ups work here, so it is delightfully drama free. There's a good selection of beer, as you would expect, and a handful of wines. The bathrooms are clean. There's live Irish music on Tuesdays, and bluegrass on Mondays.

If you live in the hood, this is a nice, comfortable place to have a beer and a simple dinner. If you're in downtown Evanston, it's a nice change from Chipotle and Panera.

Good, hearty Irish-inspired fare.  Try the lamb stew.  For the price, I would have preferred larger servings, but the quality of the food is good enough to make this a tiny complaint.

Plenty of seating, but a small bar area.  The standard pints are availabile (Guiness, Harp, etc.) and are average price.  Weeknights are busy, but not too crowded.

This is probably one of my favorite bars in Evanston that isn't overcrowded with students and we love the calamari here - Jesster A - it was based on your rec that we came here - their calamari is probably the best in Evanston.  The fries are delish and are prefect with their draft beer.  They have this amazing curry sauce that is meltable with flavors in your mouth.  Prices are a bit high for food but it can be worth it.  It's a nice place to hit up for lunch since service is great and the food is filling and warm.

Service is quick and friendly and they make my dirty martini just the way that I like it.  Definitely one of the neighborhood joints that you want to just keep it that way.

EDIT: I came here for brunch since it was so highly spoken of.  For the first time, I was really disappointed with the food - for $13, we ordered the steak wrapped in bacon with a poached egg on top.  However, the meat tasted funny - like it wasn't fresh or something.  Ended up giving the husband and me food poisoning.  Next time, I'll stick to the beer and  fries.

For some reason I always forget about this place. Perhaps it's had too many reincarnations over the years.

It still looks the same on the outside - but if you feel the urge to go in , you'll be pleasantly surprised by the atmosphere and decor (but not the wait if there is one - unless your dark master is the Martini or the Brewsky.)

The service is upbeat and so is the vibe (confession: we've only been there twice and only split several appetizers. The calamari was good (hey Dee W. - can you weigh in on this one?) and the fries are a cut above most.

Parking is palpable if you resign yourself to the Church Street Lot (just east of Chicago Avenue) or you might get lucky at the Library lot (across the street ) but DON'T forget the 2 hour limit and the $2.00 worth of change.

Don't let the the good time or the fog allow you to forget that exactly 5 seconds after that meter runs out,  the Evanston police will be on top of it with a $20 dollar parking ticket before you can even catch your breath and offer a hopeless plea.
