met some girlfriends here for drinks last night. Â decor was divey but clean. Â service was spot on. Â my glenfidich rocks was a reasonable nine bucks. Â draft beer selection was solid. Â I had a few draft beers i had previously not heard of. Â music was an eclectic mix of nineties and eighties pop. Â i will have to sample the food and post another review.
Review Source:So, I've never been to a proclaimed Football bar (Soccer for the American folks), but I have to say that I loved this place. The bartender was great. The drinks were great. And I tried their town famous veggie burger (homemade, btw), it was the best veggie burger I have ever tasted. Kudos to the chef on that one! I will upload some pictures later. Definitely recommend if you are in the area and want a good bite to eat or just to watch a game. I would have loved to go back later that night, but our travels took us closer to downtown.

When you think of Cleo's, you may think of their great Wings or their awesome Trivia on Tuesdays. But when I think of Cleo's, I think of Miss Cleo and The Psychic Readers Network. "Miss Cleo knows the truth!" And that truth be told, Cleo's is a great place for a bite to eat, a cold beer and an overall great time with friends any day of the week.
I recently ventured to Cleo's for their New Years Day Brunch with friends. I felt I did not drink enough on New Years Eve so I made up for it at Cleo's that Tuesday. With their Bloody Mary Bar (lots of pickles, olives, cornichon, horseradish and a plethora of hot sauces), their Tallboy PBR and Jameson shot $7 special and their endless pouring of ice cold water, I got my fill.
I did not eat at Cleo's that morning, but my table mates did. They seemed to enjoy their Breakfast Burritos, Pancakes, Eggs and Veggie Wraps. Pretty standard and straightforward drunken brunch food to soak up last nights disappointments.
The servers and bartenders were super cute and trivia was truly enjoyable. Our team got third place and our prize was a discount on our next trip, which I have not received yet. I should look into that.
Do you like great drink specials, great food, cute servers and Miss Cleo? Go to Cleo's Bar and Grill. And "call me now for your free reading."
The food is great.
Fav's- BBQ Chicken Pizza, Buffalo Wrap & Mac n Cheese.
Service?? What service....rude, stand off-ish employees and a waitress that doesn't smile once but sure finds time to walk out the front door and smoke....who I then watched to back behind the bar and never wash her hands. Gross.
Tried a few times...but I can't get past the rude staff, sorry.
Went here for a bears game on a Monday. It was a nice change to actually have a place to sit without getting there two hours early. We took advantage of a pitches special and ordered BBQ chicken pizza. The beer was good and the pizza was also tasty with plenty of chicken to keep two people full after sharing one. The service was good and the place had a nice pub vibe. Nothing to special and not too much of a dive. I would go back here for a game in the future.
Review Source:Having lived in the area for over 15 years, I've been to Cleo's exactly.....2 X. Â Yes. twice. Â
The first was rather memorable as it was that game for the ages, the Bartman debacle. Â Apart from that egregious act of an unfairly accused Cubs fan, I remember but one thing...the pizza. Â And fondly so...so, why did it take a good several years to come here again. Â Dunno, is all I got.
So after a loooong time since doing it, I came back craving pizza and expecting something nirvanish...it's that built up thing we do in our heads, most notably, in love or in food...or anything we're passionate about really. Â
It was good. Not nearly as good (or built up) as remembered but still a tasty thin crust w. good ingredients, good sauce, etc.
Again the city has a great many bars to choose from and the suburbs have nada. The sliders and quesdillas here were awsome and the bar had a fun look. A dark bar that stretches a ways back this place has been here a long time and weathered the Chicago Avenue competition over the years. I look forward to testing out their street competators in coming weeks and expect them to be as good as this place.
Review Source:Yeah, I'm throwing down a 5 star update. Â Cleos, you deserve it!
It sounds weird, but Cleos is an excellent early-in-the-relationship date spot. Â You know how it is: You've just started dating someone. Â You did the whole "first date at Scofflaw" and "second date at Coast" thing, but maybe you now just want to grab casual drinks and maybe a burger or something. Â Cleos is your place! Â It's divey enough to look like you're not trying too hard, but it's also clean enough to not scare someone. Â There's kitschy decor, which is fun, and a patio out back when the weather's warm. Â Perfect for that low-key kind of date that would make your PNB (or G) think you really know some good spots to hang out.
Cleos also boasts a serious Wednesday night special: $4 burgers or salads and $2.50 Goose Island beers. Â Men: You can now afford to buy your date dinner and some drinks. #baller
Finally - You can smoke on the patio. Â LOVE IT.
I love you, Cleos. Â You've been one of my faves for years and I know you'll continue to be awesome.
Cleo's is another favorite of mine...usually go in for $5 pizzas on Thursdays but even during regular days they are only $10 for a huge pizza! So delicious...burgers are great too...only thing is they used to have these deep fried cheese cubes that were AMAZING and they were replaced with pretzels that are just dull and tasteless...bring em back! But overall love the place!
Review Source:Cleo's is a dive bar done right. The right sized crowds. The right music at the right volume. The right beer selection. And the right prices.
It's a place where a daily special still refers to regular menu items at a discounted price, not special selections for the evening which cost twice as much as anything else on the menu. The $5 pizzas ($6 for specialty ones) on Thursday nights were shockingly good, far exceeding my expectations.
Cleo's was a staple for me when I was a broke grad school student, but now returning a few years later after visiting many of Chicago's "finer" establishments, it felt good to be back. Honestly, even better than I remember. And when six beers and two satisfying 14 inch pizzas amount to a bill of $40 after tax and tip, I won't be waiting years to return again.
To echo the words of my fellow yelper Gil J, yes the $5 pizza is that good and deserves to be recognized. Its been about a decade since my return and I will never let that much time go by ever again. The crafts on tap are worth alone to make a visit. The daily specials make you want to stay all night :)
The staff is super friendly and courteous. Great job checking up on us for refills, more munchies and conversation. That is a beautiful thing!
The patio to my surprise was well lit and put together. No over crowded seating and plenty of TVs.
Cleos is a staple in the community and as Johnny T says in his review "I honestly don't know how anyone could not like this place".
I only have been once so perhaps you should take what I say with a grain of salt - Â but my experience was "okay" not great but not awful.
PROs: I came to watch a soccer game and I appreciate the atmosphere. The doors/window being open allowed for a nice cross breeze which kept things comfortable. They could benefit from a bigger TV but overall had a decent view of "a" tv for most of the game. Â The price is also a "pro" they had good specials and even their regularly priced items were reasonable.
CONS: food was "okay" def not anything special - my burger taste a little burnt to be honest and they took way longer to make it then I felt like they should given that the place wasn't crowded at all. they also got my order wrong - but by the time I got it I was too wait for them to fix it so I just figured id' be better of dealing with it.
I'm planning on coming back for another game to give it a second shot - so maybe my opinion will change but overall not overall impressed
I went here for a friend's birthday. Only positive is that when she puked at the table, they were very nice.
Negative things are that their drinks are watered down. The beer was thin. I could taste more in a can of Busch than their $10 pitchers on Monday. We ordered a round of shots as well. Waitress said it was Bacardi or absolut. It tasted like water with a hint of flavor.
I'm only giving it 3 instead of 1-2 stars because they were nice, but the point of going to a bar is to drink alcohol. When the alcohol isn't worth drinking, it's not worth going.
I came here last Tuesday night with some friends for a tri-birthday celebration. Â For a Tuesday night, this place was pretty legit. Well, let me correct myself, the patio was pretty legit. But like I will explain, this was not the place for the party...so we eventually moved on after about a two hour spiff here.
Indoors, its as dead as a doorknob. Granted the All-star game was on, and everyone was quiet as a mouse watching that. All the old men and even older drunkards were taking their seats in there. Â Free Wifi
Outside, there is a cute patio with plenty of room, with huge, long tables for big groups. I had the buffalo wings as a pre-wasted snack, and they were super delicious. Their drinks were EXTREMELY watered down. I had a rum and coke, and a vodka and tonic, and boy...those ice cubes were delicious : /
It was not expensive or anything, by any means...and you pay for what you get. It was definitely not a place for a party...If anything , I'd take my mother there for an after dinner beer, or perhaps a date that I dont want to be seen with.
the bartenders were pretty chill and I must admit, they were EXTREMELY attentive and fast paced at taking orders. Perhaps it was because their drinks were B.S. It was a Tuesday night, so Ill give it it's dues...but this will always be a sit down bar for small groups. OH! and I definitely would be willing to try their trivia nights. I think its Tuesday nights at 8pm, and a first prize of 50$. Haha....but dont quote me.
Went to Cleo's this evening after West Fest . Â The beer garden is decent. Â It was nice to actually sit down somewhere without the craziness of the fest. Â I had the fish tacos, which were just the beer battered cod that they had - on tortillas with lettuce. Â (I was looking for a healthier type of fish taco - meaning grilled/baked - but they did not offer it. Â Wait, what was I expecting? Â This is a bar/grill!) Â The verde sauce that came with it was good! Â The ice tea was a-ok. Â
Our waitress had a good attitude despite the extra busy day/night that the staff had. Â She did give us the wrong bill at the end of the night and we were without napkins/silverware for a while. Â And maybe they were just short-staffed since she was not that attentive and just taking care of too many tables? Â (Oh, I sound like I'm complaining!) Â The 2 gentlemen at the door also had a pleasant disposition as well. Â
I've been here before and if I were in the neighborhood again with friends - I would return to Cleo's.
I found Cleo's on http://livesoccertv.net or something like that (you're probably reading this aren't you Cleo)! Â Anyway, they advertised there and I knew The Globe Pub was going to be too crowded so I thought to try out Cleo's in the "Ukrainian" Village with a couple friends.
Not too crowded.
Good drink selection.
Nice vegetarian options.
Good for a soccer match (but lacks a LARGE tv).
Nice breeze through the open doors.
I'll see you next time.
Cleo's has definitely earned the coveted 5th star from me. I have been going to this bar for years, as many of my friends live in the neighborhood and have made it "their bar". And for good reason...it's the perfect example of a neighborhood bar. Excellent food, excellent service, amazing beer garden, great daily specials.
I really appreciate it when a bar shows appreciation to their regulars and Cleo's does that in spades. Cheers!
I went here last week with some friends for the $5 pizza special. I met my friends around 6:30pm which was perfect as the place got more and more crowded as the night went on. Being from the North side, it was quite a commute for me to get there. However, the $5 pizza was worth the commute and I would go back for a pizza and beer night.
I had the Carnivore pizza which was basically like a meat lovers pizza. It was thin crust, had a great sauce, and tasted very fresh. My friends had the buffalo chicken pizza, and the spinach & goat cheese pizza. All of the pizzas were really good. Being a pizza lover, I will definitely be returning here.
I recommend this place if you are interested in a bar atmosphere casual spot with great pizza. I did not try any of the other food, but will be going back.
Cleo's is the bomb and for being so awesome, you get my 100th Yelp review!
Laid back, chill neighborhood bar who welcomes everyone it meets.
Live Trivia Tuesday. Bingo Sunday. Â If you're a soccer fan, guess what? Â This is a soccer bar too. Looking for cheap beer specials? Â $2.50 retro cans on Saturday's. Â Smoker? Â Well, there's a little place just for you out back that's covered with a fireplace.
Great staff and good bar food. Â The nacho's actually have real cheese melted on them, not that nasty cheese sauce which is a huge plus in my book.
Yay, Cleo's!
I've now been for trivia many times and while I still enjoy coming here, it's not as fun as it used to be. Â Multiple times some fill-in trivia guy has been there instead of the usual awesome host. This substitute is slow and makes the process slow and isn't funny. Â Also, the trivia has become so popular that if you don't get there early, you can't get a table and therefore, no trivia. Â Sad face.
I have no officially tried their nachos, with chicken, and they are quite delicious. Â
So there's the good, the bad and the eh at Cleo's.
I used to live a three minute walk away... I seldom came here for drinks at night, but came here often for Sunday brunch. Â I moved a little further away, about 10 minutes now... but it played a factor in my decrease in coming here - mostly because it slips my mind on a Sunday morning.
So I managed to come here a couple weeks ago, and again today. Â Their brunches have not slipped in quality. Â In fact, I believe they added some more selections since then and they are fabulous. Â The breakfast sandwich is quite the item! Â Definitely a great place for brunch if you're in the area.
As far as evening activities, I haven't been quite enough to say one way or the other but every time I have come on a weekday it's been really laid back and easy going. Â There are a few screens which do play games, but I think they favor soccer over nfl. Â But even if they play nfl you don't get too much of the douchbaggery of other neighborhoods.
Okay, let's be honest, no one gives a shit what anyone has to say in a 3 star review of a ho-hum establishment like Cleo's... "Then I exchanged money for alcoholic beverages." Â In fact, I really don't even care to talk about it.
I'm just writing this because someone alerted me to a tweet (I cringe even typing that word) about how some mystery person brought up their favorite yelp reviewers at a party, and I was at the top of their list. Mystery person's attempt at conversation quickly went South at that point. Yay!!! I don't like twitter, but I love you. As more than a friend. Come forth and I'll give you a caleb handie at the next elite event or something. I'm not exactly sure what that is yet, but it will probably be on urban dictionary soon.
Two friends and I wanted to meet for a cocktail and a light bite to eat, but were coming from various directions. Â We decided to head into the same direction and see where it would take us. Â So glad it was Cleo's!!
I instantly fell in love with the rich red hues through out the space and the quirky embellishments added to the ambiance. Â
Lance, the bartender, was patient with my indecisiveness and met my every whim! Â The dirty martini?!? Â Dee-lish! Â The spicy bloody mary?!? Â Double dee-lish! Â Nachos?!? Â Comforting, but not too heavy nor greasy. Â Sliders?!? Â YUM (what my friend told me)!! Â With the wallet happy prices and great service, what an awesome addition to Chicago Avenue!
Did I mention the tunes?!? Â Cure, Thrill Kill Kult, and other 1980's favorites in the mix!!
My kind of watering hole!!
After we moved into the neighborhood in June, Cleo's became our neighborhood go-to joint. We were lured in by its decor, low-lighting, great jukebox selection, and chill attitude. Nowadays, we frequent the place. The bartenders are always polite and courteous, as are the door men who took the time out to learn our names. They also have nightly food specials and a decent menu.
It's rare you will find people here that are being unnecessarily obnoxious and loud, but when they appear they stick out like sore thumb. There are a handful of regulars that you will always see sitting at the bar, and for the most part, everyone minds their own business. Cleo's has the perfect atmosphere if you want to avoid aggressive atmospheres, loud partiers, and pretentious f**ks - on any given night of the week.
One of my biggest pet peeves is bars that don't have specials on the weekend. What is probably the most redeeming quality about Cleo's is that they have great specials every night of the week.
Sure, the place smells like pee - always. And fine, there are usually a ton of bugs flying around, but that's all apart of the charm!
Cleo's is a dive done right. 25 cent wings and $10 pitchers on Mondays are deadly. I'm not proud of the gluttonous acts I've performed there.
I'm super excited to go there for a $5 fish n chips on Friday. I'm sure I won't be disappointed!
If you live in this neighborhood, this is probably your Cheers. Except Sam's not behind the bar with his friendly banter and there's nary a light illuminating the place.
It's like any other dive bar I've been in to -- surly bartenders, hit or miss service with strong pours and a regular crowd. The patio's a nice spot to relax with your buddies but it closes at midnight and you best make sure you aren't lingering or they bring the big guy out.
Stop in for a cover free drink but I'd imagine in a city like Chicago, these spots are a dime a dozen. And make sure you hit up their specials as it looks like they've got some serious discounts. Most boring review ever? Yeah. Sorry guys!
Cleo's is a rock solid watering hole with an interior that mimics Rob Zombie's tattooed torso.
The patio will tan that pasty whiteness right outta you face yous guys, and the $4 wells easily aid in the former, especially when you pass out in your wire chair from a pleasantly heavy pour.
There is an air about their staff, though, that comes across as being somewhat aloof. I'm not sure if it's par for the course, but in our two visits to big mama Cleo, I felt an in-house iciness that made the dranking sessions a little unsettling.
Of course, after seeing what kind of party machines the States have imported from the Balkan peninsula, I might also grow weary of their endless ability to eat, drink and be merry.
Wait, no I wouldn't. That's the service industry. I'd love it.
Like I said, it's a festive, gothabilly punk palace and a return visit is likely. You should definitely check it out; just don't expect pillow talk. Cleo is a wham-bam-thank-you-ma'am.
So, Cleos and I are past the euphoric honeymoon phase. The incessant shagging of yesteryear has been replaced with affectionate dependability. Sound boring? Nah... there's still good lovin' to be had. And relationship experts say that the illogical infatuation phase fades after 18 months anyway.
It's 18 months later and I'm still coming 'round... guess this means it's real!
I can now say I've sampled most of the menu offerings and most of the food is very good. Though the wraps are a bit lackluster, the hummus isn't Middle Eastern restaurant-quality and you'll probably find better pizza across the street. But, it's still solid pub grub and the fish 'n' chips are fantastic whether you're getting them on special or paying full price. That, my friends, is a bold statement.
The patio I'm still passionate about - it's one of my favorites as it's more garden and less makeshift sidewalk show. It's landscaped and far enough from the roaring motorcycles and ambulances of busy Chicago Ave. to forget the relentless bustle (for at least a La Fin du Monde or two).
Specials seven days a week are the seduction but the people, music and space will keep this fire lit for the long haul. Don't forget about the massive $4 mimosas on Sundays! Here's to another eighteen, boo.
So where do you go, when a date is going really well, and you don't feel like going home yet?
Cleo's.
After having passed nearly a dozen other bars on Chicago Avenue - this place just seemed to call my name :
"Matthew! Come drink more here!"
"Matthew! Â You know you want ONE more drink...."
"Matthew! Â Drink up old boy!"
Finally, the call of Cleo reeled me in.
First, they checked my ID at the door. Â Which made me feel special. Â I don't look twenty one. Â OK, why lie to myself? They even checked the ID of the guy that looked like Samuel L Jackson with a bad jerry curl.
The insides were kind of down home, diner style. Â Formica tables with metal legs, and old school kitchen chairs. Â I had a pint of beer - and great conversation. Â There was music playing, and people around me were enjoying the all you can eat late night buffet. Â I decided, having eaten dinner earlier, that I was done eating until at least Passover of 2011.
Another group (a big one) needed the table, so we moved to a high boy. Â The crowd was friendly, and I found myself talking not only to my dinner companion from before, but to total strangers. Â It was just the atmosphere there - it just felt right.
A few more beers later, and I would have probably talked to the bar stool I was sitting in. Â And of course, due to massive consumption of beer...I had to make tinkle.
The bathrooms leave little to the imagination. Â The urinal is next to the toilet...which is a bit awkward, but hey, when ya gotta pee ya gotta pee.
I did appreciate the fact that they were well stocked with soap.
I will totally return to Cleo's given the opportunity. Â I love the buzz of the city, and dig the feel of Ukraine Village / Noble Square.
Still awesome.... although I don't remember much. Last time I came here, i was already in bad shape. I was screaming out to the heavens for help and mercy (no, really; I was). We landed at Cleo's and the folks here took care of me. 1.) Doorguy John: awesome. He saw I was in a sideways dimension, so he helped ease the check-in process. 2.) Our awesome waitress (blonde with glasses): rather than being annoyed at the whiny inebriate in front of her, she talked me into water and food. Pizza wasn't on special, so 'how about some fish and chips?' Yes, please! 3.) Bathroom: I'll always remember our special time together. 4.) Patrons: many thanks for not beating me up.
If you come to Cleo's and don't have a good time... I can't finish that sentence. I honestly don't know how anyone could not like this place.
Oh Cleo....I have the feeling that you and me are going to be serious real soon. Surely, you are not the beauty of the block, or the Heidi Klum of bars and your grill is certainly not as sizzling hot as Megan? Scarlett? Halle?
But it's ok, I am not all that into good looks.
And I am into guys anyway - not sure why I went the chick route here....I am clearly lost.
In any case, you know what Cleo?!?!? You surely know how to make heads turn.
How?!?!??
- amazing food specials every day of the week AND during the weekend (free buffet on Sat night?!? seriously?!?)
- $3 Schlitz drafts EVERY DAY
- nice selection of beers on tap
- a great patio
- screens everywhere to watch the World Cup in a few weeks
- a wonderful location, only 5 blocks away from my digs
The whole package.
Every night's a special night at Cleo's. Â I happened to be there at the most special-est night ever, 10 cent chicken wing night!!! Â Colour me excited!
Service was poor, drinks were downright WEAK (and expensive), and it took us nearly half an hour to get our chicken wings (of which you can choose between teriyaki, buffalo, and voodoo jerk).
I think I maybe came on a bad night. Â I loved the atmosphere and vibe of the place, and it seems like quite a "neighborhood" crowd. Â Maybe you need to be one of the staff's "chosen ones" in order to get the stiff drinks and decent service.
Also, I was the only Asian in the bar. Â Kinda weird.
P.S. Â Chicago, I don't know what it is, but every hard liquor beverage I've purchased here has been downright watered down. Â Do y'all not like drinking the liquor? Â Because that makes Ed M. sad.
