I live close to this Deli and when they first opened the hoagies were superb. Sarcones rolls are the best and they used to pack the hoagies with plenty of delicious meat. It was a regular for me when they first opened but I stopped going there since the management was so discourteous. I recently gave it another chance and nothing has changed about the service from management. I ordered an Italian special during off peak hours and my hoagie was ready in minutes. Then the manager yells to one of the help to come up front to ring me up, then yells to another younger guy (presumably a family member) to ring up my order appearing that he didn't trust the help to touch the cash register. The help looked fearful of the miserable manager which is an awful display in front of customers. The hoagie was much less than my expectations with very little meat for $9. The manager/owner needs to go to customer service school or buy a personality. I'm surprised that very few of these reviews point out this disappointing service. I wlll not return due to this poor service.

Love this place! The service is friendly and fast and the food is delicious! I recommend the Chicken Cutlet Italiano hot sandwich.

Sarcone's bread, fresh meats, sharp cheeses, south Philly sandwich sense...this place has it all.  I'm lucky to have this place not far from my house.    If there's a better deli within 5-10 miles, I'd like to hear about it.  This place is like Primo's without the hands-off, franchise feel.
Listen closely now, they have 6 or 7 different types of Italian hoagies.  Just Italian hoagies.  They also have other types like turkey, ham, etc.  But that kind of focus on the Italian which is, after all, the star of the hoagie show should give you a sense for the expertise these folks possess.
All of the Italians are good to great.  I usually get the Cut Above Italian or the Sicilian because they both have the sharp provolone.  But you can ask for sharp on any of the other hoagies too.  Other favorites of mine fall under the Center City or even suburban categories as opposed to South Philly.  They are the ham and cooper sharp and the chicken salad which I usually get with provolone, lettuce, and onions.
Like any good hoagie shop in this region, they feature Herr's products with more varieties than you'd find at your typical corner deli.  They also have some store brand old-timey sodas like orange cream, black cherry, root beer, etc.  Those are pretty good.
There are some other things in the case like meatballs and such but although I've been to this place about 30 or 40 times, I've never tried most of them.  They look and smell good though.  Hard to get past the hoagies.
This place gets busy so place your order well in advance of your scheduled pick up time and be mindful of things like eagles kickoff time.  I'm also not so sure of their hours so check before you get yourself all worked up thinking about the Italian deliciousness.  minor note: the place is small and people can be idiots about where they stand or who's next so be aggressive or your wait can double sometimes.
If this place ever does sell franchise rights, I want some.

I pass by A Cut Above (ACA) on my way to work every day, pretty much for the past 9 years. One of my coworkers says her husband and friends say this is the best place to get a hoagie.

The planets aligned recently and I was on my way to work right around 12...so I gave ACA a shot.

I called my order in without having the chance to see a menu. I figured an "italian with the works" was a safe bet. The hoagiemeister on the line said "ok, give us 20 minutes."

I arrived at the deli no more than 5 minutes later. The hoagie wasn't ready when I got there, but when they saw me waiting they went to work and produced the hoagie well before that 20 minutes was up. Bonus points! The staff were really friendly as well. More bonus points!

The hoagie itself...I have looked at a menu since eating the sandwich and I still can't figure out exactly which sandwich I got. Saying "Gimme the Italian" at ACA is sorta like saying "Gimme a hoagie." When you look at the menu you will notice there are about 5 sandwiches dubbed "Italian." I was not crazy about the selection of meats in my particular hoagie, but there is so much more to a great sandwich than just meat.

For starters, one bite of this thing and I was already in love. I am not sure I have ever eaten a hoagie this fast. The roll is top notch, seeded, crusty exterior yielding a softer, chewier interior. Perfect.

The toppings were extremely flavorful. I got hot peppers, sweet peppers, pickles, LTO, oil and vinegar. They use balsamic vinegar, which adds a touch of sweetness and is very nice.

It seemed the meats on my sandwich were all different cuts of ham. I would have preferred some soppresata, perhaps some mortadella. But I didn't have a menu to look at when i called in so I can't fault them at all. This was my blunder.

Another plus is that it's a very easy in and out with plenty of parking. And you can get to the deli whether you are going east or west on W. Chester Pike.

I was hesitant to give a 5 star rating after just one visit, but I have to. This was easily in the top 5 hoagies I've ever had. I can't wait to go back.

Tiny hole in the wall place that sells the most life altering, gigantic roast beef sandwich that you will ever eat.  It's literally as big as my arm.  The only thing I would change would be to offer roll options.  I'm not a huge sesame seed fan, so having an option without the seeds would make this place perfect.

They use Sarcone's bread. Yum.  So already, whatever comes next is good. My favorite is the Veggie with sharp provolone, eggplant, and sweet roasted peppers. The large sandwiches are huge, so I usually order small and then I still have  more leftover for later. Everything I have had here has been delicious.

My favorite hoagies anywhere.  It's a scaled up version of Primo's.  Great bread, fresh meats and veggies.  I usually lean towards the Cut Above Italian or Proscuitto w/ Fresh Mozzarella.  I opted for the Veggie Deluxe last time around and while it was delicious, it was a bit greasy.  It said for an hour or so before I ate it, so I'll give it another chance.  The staff is always welcoming and friendly.

Fresh, high quality meats piled onto seeded Sarcone rolls puts them in the top tier of italian sandwich shops. If you are a fan of roast pork, you definitely want to try this place.

Unless you have the metabolism of a 17 year old boy the "regular" sized hoagie is more than sufficient.  Really, it is enough for two, but it tastes so good, you will likely stuff the whole thing down.
Regular size hoagies and hot sandwiches will get you within a couple quarters of a ten dollar bill. And it is takeout only, no tables.

Outside of the Italian Market in South Philadelphia, this is as good as it gets.

Upon my first visit, I was a bit disappointed. I was expecting something similar to the highly regarded Primo's Hoagies. I now know that's because I was only buying their small sandwiches. Their regular sized (and larger) sandwiches come on a big, tough seeded roll. Portion-wise, I think the regular is too big but it's with that bread that their hoagies taste their best.

Of the four times I've been there I've only had the Old Italian and Spicy Turkey. Both of which were delicious, fresh, and made pretty quickly.

Aside from cold and [some] hot sandwiches that can be called ahead or ordered in-store, they've got chips, salads (chicken salad, pasta, etc.), stuffed pepper shooters, etc. and a cold drink case.

I think the small sandwiches ranging around $7 tends to be a bit high for what you get, but the regular sized ones around $9 are a bargain considering you'd be stuffed upon eating one.

Quality and a good portion.  I have never been disappointed in any of their sandwiches.  They are so busy, I phone my orders in and they are almost always ready when I arrive.  Because they are popular it can take a few minutes to get an order.  Worth the wait!

This is your neighborhood hoagie deli that specializes in hoagies and hot sandwiches; it doesn't try to make everything and focuses on its specialties - with excellent reason.  The hoagies here are just as good as any that can be found in South Philly, probably because they are on Sarcone's rolls.  I had the prosciutto and sharp provolone, which was $9 for a regular, and it was delicious with and ample amount of ingredients and the perfect balance of flavorful, smoky meat, cheese, and the fresh-baked roll.  The cheese is very sharp, which made me happy.  The regular size will easily feed 2.  I also stole a bite of the antipasto, which is basically your kitchen sink hoagie with prosciutto, olives, tuna, cheese, etc.  It was surprisingly good!  Anyhow, it is crowded during lunch hours but the food is worth the wait.  I haven't tried the roast pork yet but will very soon to see if it rivals Lenny's.

Food is delicious! Sometimes the customer service experience is similar to that of the Soup Nazi in Seinfeld but well worth enduring. They do sell out early on Eagles game day so you may have to head down the Pike to Sopranos in Broomall which is just as good. Enjoy!

Simply the best hoagies you will ever find.  I'm not a born and bred Philadelphian, so I know my word probably doesn't mean that much, but I know what I like and I've probably eaten hoagies from hundreds of different shops.  A Cut Above has been my benchmark for several years now.

My bread and butter hoagie has always been a nice roast beef with just about everything thrown on it - spicy too, if that's an option.  A Cut Above delivers great rolls (always a must - the foundation of a good sandwich), beautiful roast beef, and bacon.  I can't understate the importance of this final ingredient.  It's a sin to me when you can't get bacon at a deli and not only does A Cut Above provide, but it provides thick cut, juicy bacon with just enough crisp.  It's perfect.  My black lab stares at me with very sad eyes as I eat every last morsel of this un-shareable delicacy.

Other things to know before going - it will be crowded (especially around lunch time), they take call-in orders (take advantage of this), they are pricey when compared to chain sandwiches (but completely worth it), and they will provide toppings on the side for large orders if you're ordering in advance for a large party (my wife and I get about five feet of hoagies for Christmas Eve every year from A Cut Above.  Merry Christmas).

Comparing sex to hoagies?  Now that's interesting!

Some people say "You don't know what you don't know."  Others say "You don't know what you're missing."  How sad would it be if the only burger you ever had was from Mickey Ds and you thought it was the best burger in the world!  So come on out to the western burbs and visit these folks in Newtown Square and compare these amazing hoagies to your current favorite.

Much has been said about Sarcone's rolls but it needs to be said once again.  It's the foundation for building a transcendental hoagie.

Try the Cut Above Italian Hoagie (Daniele Prosciutto, DiLusso Genoa Salami, Ham Cap, & BelGioioso Provolone).  A small will be $7 and full size will be $9.  This one is a bit spicy so expect a little zing.  As you can see these are not WaWa prices but you are getting super premium rolls, meat and cheeses.   It always amazes me that they can magically build a hoagie such that you can taste every ingredient.  One item doesn't overwhelm everything else.  As many have noted, these hoagies can hold their own with anything in South Philly.

People have different reactions to tasting great food.  Some might say "OMG."  Others might sigh and roll their eyes.  As I was walking in this week two young women were walking out with their order.   One said to the other; "Trust me, great sex is a distant second to these hoagies."  Now that's a compliment!

They make the best hoagies this side of South Street. I'm a huge fan of the sopresatta hoagie. As long as you're not on a diet, you can't go wrong here.

Let's start by saying I am not a big sandwich fan or deli person.  Most sandwiches I can make myself cheaper and more to my taste, and I hate having to stand in a long line, then bark out an order to some overworked guy and hope he gets it right while I wait in some other long line to pick it up and pay.  It's all just too labor-intensive for the kind of end product you normally get.  While my deli apathy has its good points (bread is fattening, and I get to bypass awful places like Subway), I probably have to get over it if I'm going to spend much time around the deli capitals of the USA, Philadelphia and New York.

So, the other night, being hungrier than normal having missed lunch and not being in the mood for cooking, a sit-down meal, or fast food, I decided to give A Cut Above Deli a try, since I have been driving in its vicinity for a few weeks and wondered if it really was all that and a bag of kettle chips.  It's in a pretty unprepossessing location in the middle of a strip mall, and if it didn't have awesome reviews and "Best Of" ratings, would look like no great shakes, just a place for office and retail workers to grab lunch.  It is also tiny inside and I imagine is jam packed at lunch times, but at dinner time is quite empty and peaceful.  While I was trying to collect my thoughts, one of the sandwich masters came over and in a very authentic deli-guy accent started asking what I wanted and encouraging me to try other stuff.  Very polite and nice and interested in making sure I got my sandwich.  This is such a change from the bored foreigners trying to avoid taking my order that I usually run into, I was momentarily floored.

I recovered enough to order a hot roast beef hoagie and a corned beef special from their menu (which frankly struck me as a bit limited in choices).  The corned beef was OK, as in it was all right, not bad, but not great enough to get me to eat another one soon.  It was sliced very thin, cold and a bit blah.  Not sure whether they would slice it thicker and/or heat it up if I'd asked, because that was just way more hassle than I wanted to deal with being all hungry and out of my element.

However, and this is where the five stars come in, the hot roast beef sandwich was OMG THE BEST HOT ROAST BEEF SANDWICH I EVER HAD IN MY LIFE.  It was warm, just slightly spicy, and coated in gravy that was more like au jus. The gravy did NOT taste like it  came out of a can!  And the bread was great!  The meat did not taste like cold roast beef that was reheated (you know what I mean, that Arby's steam aftertaste, GONE!)  It was super fresh.  Really the whole thing was just to die for!  I ordered a "regular" size which turned out to be over a foot long and more or less "huge" in relation to my stomach, and ended up eating most of it, which was good because spending a night in the fridge made the leftover more like "OK" on the order of the corned beef.  I do remember asking for some Swiss cheese on it and I am not sure if the guy remembered to put that and it was buried under meat, or if he forgot, but the thing was so good I didn't even stop to think about Swiss cheese till the next day.

I will probably go back and try the Italian hoagie but I don't really care at this point if it's better than my trusty 7-11 Italian hoagies that I normally buy, because OMFG, the HOT ROAST BEEF will be there!  Oh, and they have a good selection of potato chips (as in, kinds you can't find at the WaWa usually) and birch beer in their drink selection.  Score.

Honestly, try one of their hoagies and you'll never turn back. The bread is ah-mazing, I get a full hoagie and I finish it every time. Delicious simplicity at its best. I wish there was something half as good in New York. Until then, I'll just savor every last bite while I'm in town.

These hoagies are amazing.  Their rolls (sarcone's) really make the hoagie.  They pile on the meat.  The staff is really nice, and they have a good selection of sodas to choose from - not just coke and pepsi but some orange cream, root beer, etc.)

Also, their macaroni salad is decent - NOT made with miracle whip (yuck).

This deli is my benchmark for a good hoagie.  They make a great corned beef special also.  Their bread is half the battle and really makes their hoagies what they are.  But their recipes and ingredients are awesome.  I really like their sharp provolone cheese that they use also.

Every employee there seems to be a part of a family.  They all carry themselves like gentlemen and usually greet me with a friendly hello.

This is my favorite hoagie shop anywhere in the world.

I have been a customer there since they opened their doors many years ago. The people are the nicest.  Very efficient, friendly. Love the people. However, their hoagies are not my favorite anymore. I usually get a small size--7 dollars--but lately there has been 1 or maybe 2 slices of VERY thin meat , very little cheese, etc. Maybe they only put meat on the 9 or 19 dollar hoagies these days.  Did not use to be that way.  I hate to say it, but, will probably go to Primos from now on as they make a nice full hoagie. Cut above--Where's the Meat???? Hate to leave ya but, for 7 dollars , would expect more than a roll with not much in it.

Far and away the best hoagie shop in the immediate area, nothing else comes close.  I only give 4 stars because they know they are the best and charge for it, and I am offended they use iceberg lettuce! A sandwich this good deserves some romaine.

Hoagies are actually very good but the service is so poor I won't return.  I've given them mutiple chances.  On each for 4 orders they have messed up one of the sandwiches.  Also, the man at the counter is so unpleasant and just downright rude.  It costs nothing to be curteous to your customers....especially for what seems to be a family run business.  It's a shame because the quailty of prodcuts is actually very good.

I wrote a review about 2 months ago and it appears that it has been removed.  I wanted to check back to see if the owners or others had comments and it is now gone.  This makes me a bit suspicious of this site and reviews posted.

Anyway, I think the sandwiches here are great, but the attention to detail and customer service is awful.  Over the years we have ordered sandwiches specifically asking for no spices/seasonings and believe me when I say they put it on every time.  I do not write reviews, but this time I had to b/c after stressing that my wife had an allergy, there were still spices on the sandwich.  We wound up leaving the Eagles game (parking lot) and going to the emergency room as we did not realize it was seasoned.  Upon inspection, it was buried all over the bread (not on top).  So we were not only charged for an emergency room visit, but also had to eat the cost of 4 Eagles tickets.  When I called to discuss it with them there was not one ounce of care or concern or customer service.  I did not ask for anything, just called to voice my story and it was met without care.

Again, I have never had a complaint about the quality of the sandwich, but customer service and attention to detail is as poor as I have ever seen.  I have visited numerous Primo Hoagies establishments (upwards of 10) and have made the same request every time, and they have gotten it right every time.  Not too difficult to see the customer service and attention to detail there.

Just be aware that while you get a good sandwich, there is also a lot of negative behind the scenes (and I would not say this if it was an isolated incident).

As for my previous review, I am not sure why it has been purged from this list, but it makes me not trust Yelp too much right now.

I just discovered this place via Yelp, and the reviews don't lie.

A Cut Above makes a mean hoagie. The Sarcone's seeded bread is the perfect vehicle for the myriad fillings of meats, cheeses and vegetables they have available. I got the Veggie Deluxe, stuffed with sauteed eggplant, broccoli rabe, and roasted red peppers.

As is usually the case, this little hole in the wall deli offers far superior sandwiches than any chain could hope to, and makes WaWa look like school cafeteria food.

    Highly recommended.

It's been here now for a while and this place is by far the BEST place in the area and in the burbs for quality Italian food.

This is the PREMIERE place to get the best sandwiches in the western burbs.

The pork, Beef, the Italian hoagies....the hot peppers...meatballs...I'm hungry now.

Again one of the reason's I'm fat :)

    We ordered the following:

    1) Meatball (from the Homemade Hot Sandwiches section) - loved the sauce on this meatball - YUM!

    2) Cut Above Italian Hoagie (Daniele Prosciutto, DiLusso Genoa Salami, Ham Cap, & BelGioioso Provolone) - liked it but wasn't outstanding.  It had a bit of a kick of pepper of some sort and some onions (which I'm not a big fan of raw onions)

    3) A Cut Above Deli - Vanilla Cream - liked it but wasn't outstanding.  We looked at the label saw that it was re-branded.

Overall, everything was good.  I would definitely go back for the meatball sandwich.

The Cut Above Italian Hoagie was good... but I think I'll get it next time without the onions.

Bar none the best hoagies in Philly's Western burbs! Comparing this place to Primo's is just plain lame (unless you're talking the original Primo's about 10 or more years back). Cut Above Deli is far, far, far better!

This to-go-only sandwich shop makes their hoagies with premium cheeses and meats, so don't be surprised that the prices are much above what you'd pay at Wawa and Subway. But it is oh so worth it. The bread is crusty perfection. The roast pork sandwich (rabe or peppers) is just downright lip-smacking. The 'Old Italian' hoagie is truly transcendental! And the 'Tuscan' and 'Milano' hoagies are equally incredible.

This place is so worth the trip.

This place answers the age old question "Can a hoagie make a grown man cry?"  Why, yes.  Yes it can.  ...when deftly crafted by 'A Cut Above' deli in Newtown Square.

Inside, you will not find any tables to sit at or chairs to sit on.  There is only a Formica faux wood counter that is plopped at an angle, looking like someone ran out of either patience or time when installing it.  No matter.  This place is order, pick up and go.  The staff is efficient and courteous with no glad-handing and absolutely no schmaltzy "ehhh, ooooh, whattayawant on your sangwich?" hokum.

No cheese steaks.  Just cold cut and hot roast pork and beef hoagies.  My favorites are the, well, all of them.  The roast pork or beef italiano sandwiches are made with roasted beef or pork (duh), roasted red peppers (marinated in olive oil and garlic) and sharp provolone cheese.  And, yes, I know you've had one of those before; but, you have NOT had one of these before.  Trust me.

Try a Sicilian or Spicy Tuna or an antipasto (tuna, prosciutto, peppers shooters, sharp provolone, black olives and more --  that turns out, is NOT a random, tasteless mash-up of ingredients; but is awesome).

All sandwiches are made on Sarcone's bread/rolls, and it gets better from there.  Tuna hoagies are made with imported tuna in olive oil, no mayonnaise.  Go nuts.  Substitute long hot peppers or broccoli rabe for the roasted reds.

Cut Above transcends the hoagie paradigm.  If all restaurants understood their business and customers like 'A Cut Above' does, I believe we could achieve world peace.

It just doesn't get better than a nice, Philly-born, Italian-raised, hoagie.  I've eaten here twice in one weekend while visiting my girlfriend.  She said that she grew up loving this place and I could certainly see why.  It seems that the place hasn't changed one bit in terms of quality or value ($6-8 per sub).  I've tried only two of their hoagies (Italian and Cut Above) but both were supreme in taste.  They also had these peppers stuffed with fresh mozzarella that I didn't get to taste.  But good lawd(!), they looked so yummy I gotta get them in my tummy on my next visit.

However, I must forewarn Mets fans of visiting this fine establishment, as mention of the Phillies' recent World Series win is plastered all over the damn place.  If it wasn't for the sandwiches, I'd probably have thrown up.  But, I did take one of their hoagies and brought it across the border back into NYC so I could eat it on my lunch break during my LSAT class.  I know.  I'm just straight gangster like that.

When I first tried this shop I was a soft roll guy, they have totally converted me.  Their roll is now almost my favorite part.

I have grown up in the greater philly area and so have eaten hundreds of italian hoagies but to my mind this one is the best.

The whole sandwich is always fresh.  The mix of meats is perfect.  Between the taste and texture this sandwich is heaven.

I used to be able to stomach average hoagies like WaWa but after the comparison I cannot stand bad sandwiches anymore.

Primos are ok, but they are not as good as the sandwich named after this shop. To my mind these sandwich's are better than Lee's and quite simply the freshest and tastiest.

Between the chewy roll that is soft on the inside, really fresh meat and cheese, and the perfect mix of tastes I really envy you if you are trying it for the first time.

this amazing little carry-out sandwich shop is every bit worth your drive from philadelphia, or wherever it is you are.  i'd say it is up-to-a-50-mile-radius-good.  whenever i can get away with it, and whenever i have my car at work, i will take a super-long lunch (it's a 20-min drive one-way from wayne where i currently work), wait in line, get a sub (or, hoagie, i live in philadelphia now!!!), then get back in my car and speed back to the office while chomping on my decadent lunch.  i just get a simple tomato + fresh moz *hoagie* with a few drops of olive oil.  so simple, and so, so so good.

Im not going to get into this too much but this place is hands down the best Hoagie in deleware county maybe even the deleware valley. It lost 1 star from me because...

    1. The bread is phenominal but i could do without the sesame seeds.
    2.  All burps for the next few days will taste like the cut above (also some mean heartburn but it will never stop me)
    3. I once saw Mitch Williams in there ( frakin prick)

This place is in a tie with Primo's for my favorite hoagies, as they are virtually identical.  The meat is fresh and the sandwiches are very large and made on Sarcone's bread. One the weekends make sure to call your order in ahead of time...waits can be a little long.   I recommend adding jalapeno poppers to the italian hoagie, they are excellent.
