I have yet to eat at the Dana Cafe, not for lack of trying. I came with a friend on December 29th, and a sign on the door said "Closed until January 2nd." All right, so they take an extended holiday. Fine. I came back today, January 5th, when both Yelp and their own hours posted on the door say they should be open, and it's still closed. This time there is no sign or any information about why they're closed on their website. I guess I'll just stop trying.
Review Source:Seriously not sure why people can complain at all about this place. Not only is it cozy and cheaper than your other "crepes" places, but it is absolutely delicious. The owner makes the gelato, and the crepes, and everything, which makes it ten times awesomer! ;) (excuse the incorrect term). I personally love the paninis, crepes, cakes, coffee, all of it! I recommend it to everyone, and will definitely continue to come here!
Review Source:Ohh man. Â The fact that this place is across from Mathers HS kind of makes me avoid coming here between noon to 5. Ha, I'm stuck at work anyways so no business is really lost to Dana's owner. Â I only come here for the nutella crepes and I really do enjoy them. Â However, there was a time that I came here and the owner was out of a few toppings that I thought was blasphemy for its unavailability. Â Granted it was 10pm but you're still open for business. Â However, in this neighborhood, I believe this cafe is a star and I hope they do well enough to sustain business.
Review Source:Nutella crepe that everyone raved about is indeed true! the atmosphere is lively with Foreign music. I had a  delicious caramel macchiato and my partner enjoyed a gelato strawberry/banana shake. we intended to do some work on our laptops and did not mind the food/drinks coming out 10-15 minutes.
Review Source:I was invited to meet a friend, who said the yelp reviews of this place were good. Â My partner got "The Bavarian" Panini. I got the Nutella crepe's...my partner and i were both very happy with our food. The employees were very attractive, and attentive. Their coffee was very good. Â Our friend that met up with us got a panini, and was equally happy with her sandwich. Â
In short? It's a great location (across from Mather High School, on Lincoln Ave, south of Peterson, north of Foster), great quick food, smooth, ri
Quality, the best word to describe Dana Cafe. By far the best cafe I have ever been to, and I have been to pretty much every cafe in the city. I come here at least twice a week, the primary reason being Quality of Dana Cafe.
Coffee so good that you don't need sugar, amazing crepes, and the best Panini Sandwhiches in Chicago. The owner goes beyond the extra mile to make sure that every little piece of chicken in their amazing chicken cesar panini is perfectly peppered, that your coffee is fresh and tasty, and that your savory nutella crepes have plenty of nutella in them. He cares about his shop, and it shows through every sip of coffee. He is one of the nicest people I have ever met.
Dana is a great place to get work done, perfect balance of a relaxing chill spot, yet lively enough where you aren't falling asleep. No cheesy niche decor needed here, just quality food and coffee. The people that go there are great and respectful. Not many places you can go to that has great coffee, amazing food, delicious desserts, a ton of outlets to plug your laptop, free WiFi, and soccer/FIFA 12/Sports playing on the TV when you need a break from work.
Now enough typing, time to get some delicious crepes and an amazing latte.
Cheers!
Such a great addition to this boring part of Lincoln Ave. Cheap coffee and food, nice layout, free wifi, and a strangely '90s vibe (or maybe it was just the music they happened to be playing when I was there). The place was totally empty on a Tuesday night, but I imagine it gets more noisy and crowded when the high school is in session since it's right across the street.
Review Source:They had 6 flavors of gelato, I did not like them that much. Â To me, they tasted like water down ice cream. Â I mean, I love gelato but these were not good at all.
Now, the crepes were a different story. Â I had the double nutella crepe with strawberries & Â bananas, they were VERY generous on the nutella...
The guy was very friendly and willing to help out. Â He was very patience and let us try the gelato flavors and decide without rushing us. Â The place seemed cozy and like a good place to hang out. Â Crepes are the cheapest I've had so far for what you get, they are pretty good, too.
I came to Dana Cafe was to use my Groupon I bought a few months back.
We ordered two paninis, the Turkey Fresco one was bleh, the chicken caesar one was pretty creative and tasty.
Maybe it was because we ate the crepes once we got home, but the cheese one was kinda flavorless, and the nutella and jelly ones were just ok. I am huge fan of Nutella, so this was a bit disappointing.
This space looks like a nice place to hang out, but I also noticed one of their ottomans was stained pretty badly which is kinda gross.
Not sure that I would recommend this place with so many better restaurants in Chicago.
Seems like a cool place to stop by and hang out with friends or study and get some work done. Â The prices are extremely reasonable. Â The crepes were only $3 and I love how they make them the long rectangular way instead of the triangle so that the nutella to strawberry to crepe ratio was perfect for every bite. Â I'd never had a peanut butter and jelly crepe before but after trying theirs I think it's now one of my fav combos for crepes. Â The strawberry smoothie was also surprisingly really good and refreshing.
Strawberry smoothie
Nutella and strawberry crepe
Peanut butter and jelly crepe
Black Coffee
All this for less than $12.....well $2 since we had a $10 groupon-type gift certificate :) Â An amazing afternoon snack we'll def be back soon!!
My first first to Dana. It's funny how Boba Bee still have their banner hanging on the side of the building haha. It's usually empty in this cafe but at least it's quiet! My bf and I ordered the Nutella Crepes (double) and boy are they generous with the Nutella! It made me full pretty faste due to how sweet it was. We also ordered smoothies, but sadly they didn't have tapioca balls. And I wanted to try out their pastries but they don't sell them anymore. They should really update their menu and make the font size bigger!
Overall, a decent cafe. The worker was very nice to us.
I needed a cafe in walking distance from the home that had free wi-fi. Search on Yelp led me to Dana Cafe. That then led me to their website which doesn't have their hours on it. I felt that was odd, but it was like 2pm on a Sunday so I felt it should be good.
My friend and I planned to be in there for hours, and we were. 5 hours, in fact. So, needless to say, we ordered more than once. This gave me a chance to try a few things: the tea, the crepes, the paninis, and the bubble drinks. But first I'll talk about the interior.
It's really modern with a well selected combination of bright greens and oranges with that modernishly looking black-brown woodgrain. The plugs for the laptops are conveniently placed at the bottom of the benches and the whole place is well-lit without being too bright. Perfect for being on a computer and/or reading for a long time. The bathrooms are great and out of sight, but wondrfully accessible. Basically, the inside is an all around WIN for me. The offerings, however...
Bouncing back to what I consumed while there. The bubble drinks were completely devoid of any sweetness whatsoever. I was seriously both shocked and appalled. The tapioca balls usually absorb sweetness from the drink itself, but since there wasn't any to absorb they were just as tasteless. I really didn't get this one.
I believe I got the Bavarian panini, which was Ok, but didn't do much for me taste- or filling- wise. The crepes. I'm not a fan of Nutella, sue me. But, that's the only one I felt was worth getting. I've been to a few crepe places as well as places that serve crepes, and I've never seen such a simple list of just simple ingredients before. I coughed that up to them being across from a high school. I'm guessing teens need things to stay simple. I got a Nutella crepe with bananas and was decent for me not being a fan. The second time I went, though, and got the crepe again, I knew I had given Nutella enough of a chance and I just wasn't down with it.
The tea I got was the Roasted Almond, and it was the best thing I had. It's a loose leaf tea that has such a delicious scent that beckons you in to take a sip before it's cool enough for you to do so. Despite my burned tongue, I savored every sip. What I didn't savor, was drinking out of a paper cup even though I was staying in. Got plates for the food, and glasses for water, but a to-go cup for the tea? Sigh.
I would love this spot if the food was a bit more inventive, the bubble tea tasted like something, and if I got my hot tea served to me in a porcelain cup. Oh, also... defined hours. I know us Yelpers add the hours of operation for businesses often times, but it seems Dana Cafe has very much unlocked their Yelp business page and can update the hours accordingly. Or at least post them on their own website. I KNEW it said on here they closed at 10pm Mon-Thurs. Just this past Thurs (my 2nd time there), to my shock and appall, they closed at 8pm. I wouldn't have bothered coming for just an hour had the right time been posted anywhere online.
I'll try them again next month and see how things are. I'll hope my shock and appall will be replaced with satisfy and delight.
If I could think of one word to describe Dana Cafe it would be "surprise".
Amidst a stretch of Lincoln Ave. where a lot of the shops look a little broke down, Dana Cafe is a cute and modern little coffee and sandwich shop owned by the most delightfully sweet couple in all of coupledom. Surprise!
I was a little disappointed when they were out of the tuna needed to make the Mediterranean tuna paninni that I wanted, but the turkey fresco paninni was more flavorful than any turkey sandwich I have had in a while and the cheese was perfectly melty. Surprise!
Our order took a little longer than expected because the husband/wife team got a little swamped right after we placed our order, but they sweetly apologized for the wait. I'm not sure if they felt bad that our order took a long time or if it was because I was dining with a Yelp star, but they also brought over a free nutella crepe and it was absolutely perfect. Surprise!!
Not only was Dana Cafe a great little spot for some girlie gossip, but it was a nice little hidden gem brimming with hospitality and not one ounce of pretension found at other coffee shops. Surprise.
Think big, think globally. That's what Dana Cafe seems to be doing with their vast menu featuring crepes and city-themed combinations (i.e., a French espresso drink paired with a croissant, an imported Viennese tea served with strudel). And, espresso drinks run about a $1 less than what you'd pay at Starbucks. You'll never feel rushed as that warm European hospitality (the owner is Bosnian) encourages you to linger... enjoy that conversation with a friend you haven't seen in ages, bring your laptop in and take advantage of the free wi-fi, or just take an hour to slow down and relax. Europeans are very good at doing this; Americans, not so much!
Dana Cafe also dabbles in bubble tea drinks, smoothies, ice cream and milkshakes. Hungry? You can't go wrong with one of their specialty paninis. I tried the turkey fresco which was hands-down one of the best sandwiches I've had in some time. Preparation takes a bit longer, but everything is prepared by the owner with loving care and he is truly invested in making sure you're happy with the end result. My friend devoured her caprese panini, and loved her blueberry bubble tea. Blueberry! The mango was also top-notch, with plenty of tapioca balls.
I still have a lot of ground to cover, and will soon return for a nutella crepe (or maybe, the apricot and brie). Word on the street is that these crepes rule! Good luck Dana Cafe, I hope you're around for the long haul.
This is a charming little indie cafe located right across from Mather High School. It has a European vibe and aesthetic, an open design with a pleasing, clean geometric lines and great colors. The walls are lined with vintage urban black and white photos of cities around the world. Banquettes on opposing walls are surrounded with modern stools, creating conversation areas. A refreshing change from the rows of solo table and chairs in most small cafes.Very effective lighting, and nice lounge style "intelligent" house music,.The setting would make a great bar/lounge.
The menu is standard Euro cafe, with coffee, a selection of teas, crepes, pannini, sandwiches, ice cream, and a small choice of pastries. Dont' come for the pastries. The cookies, while priced right at $.59, look conspicuously like the ones from Subway. A 12 oz. coffee is $1.10. I can't speak to the fancier coffee drinks as only buy regular or on occasion a latte. My coffee was weaker than I normally like, but still fine. I like that they give you table service if you stay, and they bring you the napkin, sugar and cream. Another nice Euro touch. The server (and the sole employee) was very congenial. So be patient. He does the food prep and the beverages, and the serving.
Unlike many other Euro cafes in the area, this one is very open and inviting, and a place to be with people, vs, isolating with your PC. You know, like they do in Europe. Â A thoughtful and original addition to this Northwest side neighborhood and Lincoln Ave. strip.
