I am from Phlly, which you would expect is a pretty good jazz town. It IS for talent, but from a club standpoint, Denver CRUSHES us.  I was in Boulder for an 8:30 Monday  business meeting and arrived on Sunday. Sunday is not usually a great jazz night, and the divier clubs that had been recommended (Chapultepec etc.) were doing soul, open jams etc.  Dazzle had the promise of straight ahead Jazz, so I mad it my destination...about 30 minutes from Boulder.  It was easy to find, and on a Sunday at 7:00 free parking was easy to find.  A nearby liquor store had an ATM which ensured I had cash for the reasonable $12.00 cover.
On the calendar was guitarist Marcus Firillo who had an impressive resume. Â among his sidemen listed was saxophonist Rico Jones whom I Googled to find a YouTube video of a 13-year old struggling through some funk at an American Legion post. Â I did some simple math and figured he was 15 by now, and figured I'd take a chance,.
Upon entering the club and paying the cover, I was admonished to refrain from conversation during the music. Â As I was alone (and do not present as schizophrenic) I brought these facts to the attention of the door guy. Â He was apologetic, but explained, it was policy to tell everyone before they enter the jazz room. In reality, I am VERY happy when the house makes and enforces these kinds of policies. Â The room was pretty full, but I was still led to a nice table for four, full tablecloths and linen, and a little Miles Davis card making a "shush" gesture remind patrons to respect the band (who buy the way, gets the entire cover. Â As the menu explains, the food and libations go to the house.)
Though I had just eaten a VERY filling lunch at the legendary Sink in Boulder, I felt compelled to order dinner. Â The menu was great, and very reasonable. Â I wish I had been hungrier, but I ordered the $15 fish and chips and a beer. Â Cocktails were ALSO very reasonable, and I would love to have partaken, but had to drive back to Boulder AND present to 15 customers at 8:30 the next A.M.
Anyway, the band was GREAT !! Â Two years was an incredible maturing of Rico Jones who played like a man with a MUCH larger prostate. The whole set was stimulating and fun. Â The audience (mixed ages and races .. as much as Denver might expect) was polite, attentive and appreciative.
As I was leaving after the final tune, the doorman signaled me that they were doing an extra encore. Â I stayed until the very last note.
Macaroni and Four Cheese, Garlic Bread (four cheese), and Parmesan crusted chicken over tomato basil linguini were great!
Husband had the Titan IPA and said it isn't as strong as most IPAs.
The Razzle Dazzle martini was good, too.
Tuesday night was a free jam session which was really neat to see a bunch of different artists that didn't know each other play.
