Best sushi!
Love this restaurant! Byob, near Boystown, and they're open til somewhere around 4am! It's a small restaurant so be prepared to get cozy and hear everyone else's conversation.
The names of the rolls are awesome but they taste even better. Drag queen roll, like a virgin roll, etc etc. Can't go wrong with any of the specialty rolls. The Divalala is the best, it's wrapped in soy paper and so yummy.
They always have daily specials, last time was order 3 rolls get the 4th free. I believe they have all you can eat sushi during the weekdays for under $20. They always have some deals on groupon and restaurant.com so look out for those.
Service is great. They even changed one of the tv's to my Broncos game. Haha yes, sushi and football. Perfect.
One of the best in Chicago
If I'm in the mood for sushi, it's an easy decision to go to Diva. It's a small, but cozy place not to far from the Addison redline stop. I'd recommend the Diva Lala or the Drag Queen rolls.
Ordered for delivery last night after all the other positive Yelps. Was disappointed. We got pot stickers, which were good. We also ordered the chicken satay which was nothing special and pricey for what was delivered.
The basil fried rice with chicken was very good. However the pad Thai was really quite strange. Also ordered with chicken it had a distinct orange hue and was very gummy. Also very bland and not flavorful. Â Will keep searching for our new favorite Thai food.
Followed the guidelines on my http://restaurant.com gift certificate and they refused it. Â The food was okay, but they lost a repeat diner for horrible service. Â Way over priced for the quality. Â I guess that make sense the place was always empty when I went in.
Review Source:Unfortunately I have never eaten at the restaurant location, but I have ordered delivery thanks to the Grub Hub app...
I am a night owl, and this is the best place to order from after hours! Even after delivery the sushi is in tact and the food is still hot.
I usually order the white tuna and avocado, and the Pad Thai noodles. recently I tried the fried rice- which was very good, along with the chicken satay. The satay came with a spicy peanut sauce and it totally gave the chicken a nice kick.
I will definitely make my way over to the restaurant in hopes that the service is as good as the food!
Diva's is the spot to get your late night sushi/asian food fix. Their sushi rolls are all good enough for the price and their pineapple fried rice is spectacular. I also am a fan of their Tempura Udon. I get it only for the Udon soup of which their broth is unparalleled in my personal opinion - more of an actual Udon or beef broth as opposed to some that is more of a chicken broth. I agree with other reviews to the point that their "thai" food might leave your craving unfulfilled.
I can honestly say I've ordered from Diva's over 20 times in the past year. Â I've dined in and ordered carryout. Â They are always friendly, nice, non-judgmental of how much food I order, will always call me if I leave part of my order behind. Â Overall good quality food for a reasonable price.
Just a quick note to douchebags rolling in here afterhours. Â This includes those of you that say one thing but act another. Â The place is located on Halsted in Boystown. Â This means you should have some effing respect for the people that may dine here often, so using terms like.. "f*ggot" or "that's so gay" makes you look like an idiotic twat. Â Some might say Chicago typical.. Â Let's break the mold shall we?
I'm going to try my best to be quick with this one. Â So, per what my Yelp friends share in their reviews the best sushi roll to order is the "drag queen roll" or rather it's one of their best. Â This is true and whether eating here sober or after a night of being at the bars, the flavors of this roll are amazing. Â As in "ah-maze-ing". Â I also tend to get an order of of their angel wings(perfectly fried chicken wings), tempura and potstickers. Â In other visits I've gotten to try their different Thai dishes which I can't say has ever satisfied my Thai thirsts. Â Fried lard nar noodles are pretty bad but say something easy like beef fried rice is pretty freaking good.
Details: Â Street parking only. Â Late night till 4 am! delivery as well. Â Table service from 11 - 4 am can be hit or miss depending. Try the drag queen roll if you would like tempura fried sushi in a drizzle of tasty sauces. Â Inexpensive and tasty if you order correctly. Â Learn from your Yelp peers.
Checked this place out on a Wednesday, around 5:30, with 3 friends. Â
1. Â It is BYOB, no corkage fee
2. Â They are on http://restaurant.com ($50 off of $100 - sweet deal)
3. Â They are open until 4am
4. Â The bathroom was clean and beautiful
This place is nothing from the front, I would probaly walk past and not give it a second glance. Â
You walk in, go up about 6 steps and walk into a cozy, nicely decorated room. Â Service was great, everyone was friendly. Â The inside does not match the outside. Â The coolest part, was they had this music playing. Â Current pop songs, being sung by one artist - kind of Nora Jones-like, in the background. Â You hear it and think 'I know this song, but not quit sure, really great background music.
On to the food. Â We ordered 3 appetizers and 8 different rolls. Â Potstickers, chicken satay, and some sort of friend chicken wings. Â They were all average - the satay probably below average, kind of a watery chicken piece. Â
The rolls - Alaskan, Dragon, Red Carpet, Dancing Queen, Drag Queen, I Will Survive...and 2 more that I don't remember. Â Everything was fresh, big, firm, and delicious. Â The rolls were tightly made, not falling apart. Â The sauces on some were so complimentary, it just hightened the food. Â Â I would go back just for the Drag Queen roll - so different and good.
Overall, a great experience. Â This place isn't huge inside, but set up really nice. Â I will be back for sure!
Yum! Don't know why this place has bad reviews... but nothing is ever good enough for Yelpers...
Ordered delivery:
Pad Thai
Pad Woonsen
Miso Soup
Jasmine Rice
Everything was delicious, clearly marked, very well packed... couldn't ask for better!
It took a while for the delivery driver to get here (not too long) and she was SUPER nice and apologized for the wait (again not too long of a wait)
We will be ordering from here again. Well done Diva!!
Okay, I think this place is awesome. It's open until 4 am and it's BYOB (with absolutely no fees!). I had a Groupon and they had no problem taking us in without a reservation. It doesn't look like much but some of the best sushi places are the ones without all of the frills. The pot stickers were a little cold, not as hot as I would have liked but they were delicious anyways. Now, on to the main event. We ordered the Philly (which is a staple at many sushi places I love), the Everest, Like A Virgin, and the Key West Beach roll. My favorite? The Key West Beach roll! It came out on fire and the scallops were so smooth, the whole thing was quite spicy and I loved every single bite. The Philly roll had perfectly smoked salmon which a lot of places can't do right. The Everest was also delicious, the Like A Virgin was our least favorite but still pretty solid. I'll definitely be back and I will be taking advantage of their delivery!
Review Source:I am not sure how I feel about this place... The best thing it's got going for it are the hours. I can't even count how many late nights I've had sudden sushi cravings and there was nothing I can do about them... I wish there was a sushi place open so late in the burbs, but unfortunately, it's just not the case. I've been here twice - once we ate inside and I thought it was decent sushi, esp being that it was after 11 pm. The second time, I went with the Living social takeout special and ended up driving all the way to the city for some carryout. I've never ordered through living social before, so I don't know if it's how all the restaurants work, but it was so easy and convenient. I just came into Diva, with the food being all ready and paid for - awesome! Considering that it's all hard street parking around that area, this option was great.
I got two soups and four rolls, which ended up being way too much. We got two of the spicy ramen hot soup, and the portions ended up being HUGE. If I knew, I would just have gotten one to share with my boyfriend. The rolls were less than mediocre, which was sad because it all went to waste. I never do that with sushi... and if there are any left over, they taste great in the morning. Not these... oh well.
I am not sure if I'll be back, unless I am in the area and if I just can't live without having some sushi that night. Can't say anything about the Thai food here because I haven't tried it, but from the reviews, it seems like the better choice of the two.
I had my night planned out one tuesday night for when I got off work at midnight..
Go home find a sushi place that delivers and watch Weeds.
Well I usually order from Oh! Fusion but seeing as Diva had a free appetizer with a purchase of lets say.. 15-20$ order I went with them. I ordered off grubhub and the delivery came fast which is always a plus. They followed the instructions of calling first and not buzzing at 12:30am which I'm sure my roommates would appreciate as well. Upon opening the order everything look great. I'm having a hard time remembering what I ordered( i could look but meh) I do know is that I ordered two different rolls.. both spicy and one crunchy and also the appetizer of pot stickers.
Everything just felt mushy and there was nothing special. The potstickers were tiny and very greasy.. the whole order just felt greasy.. how with sushi i have no idea but thats what it was like. I might give them another try seeing as I understand the restaurant business and their off days.
Maybe next time Diva!
I've been to Diva 3 or 4 times now... always with a daily deal of some sort (Groupon, Amazon Local, etc). The service is fabulous and we never have to wait for a table. It's a little weird that it's in the old 44th Ward club/bar where I've had many a drunken night, but you'll get over that with your second visit.
Everything I have ordered has been awesome. I've tried a few different sushi rolls, pad thai, fried rice, chicken teriyaki, miso, and crab ragoon. Yum! The prices are VERY affordable. BYOB (no corkage fee) helped keep our tab for 2 under $20 with 2 entrees. Yes please, thank you.
We had a good time here, but once it got later in the evening, service was sssllllooooowwwwwwwwwwww. Â And it was impossible to get ahold of a waitress. Â
That being said, sushi was great, gotta love anything BYOB, and it's in a great location.
I think next time I would probably go during off-peak hours, or order take out.
Color me "not impressed". As I sit here writing this review, I see Arlene A's review in the sidebar and I am pretty much just going to reiterate everything she just said.
- Potential to be a beautiful space, but it's completely wasted. Take down the tacky cheap shit on the walls, paint them (a deep red would be nice...or a purple, since you are obviously playing to your Boystown crowd with the theme/names of the rolls) and make the entry way nicer, as that is your customer's first impression.
- The standard maki were all mediocre to borderline inedible. The one special roll we got was decent, but so overpriced and definitely more filling than fish.
- They are BYOB and open to 4am. And they are currently running 50% off the entire menu during lunch.
That last point is the only reason this is a 2 star review instead of 1. Time to step up your game, Diva.
So let's just get to it, this place is not worth going to unless you have a groupon. Â This place isn't particularly clean and the sushi? Â There was only one word to describe my bite of California Roll, squishy. Â That's right, like that gum that squirts in your mouth. Â Not delicious. Â However the Drag Queen Roll made me completely happy. Â
They could use a good sprucing up, as when you walk in/out you can see all the excess catering equipment. Â But I guess the real attraction is that this place is open until 4am and is byo. Â If that's all you need than you're good to go.
We made the mistake of ordering delivery from here last night because nothing else was open and, after a long, weird day, I desperately wanted crab rangoon. However what arrived at my door was some of the worst and most expensive thai food I've had in the city of Chicago. And instead of crab rangoon, they brought me pot stickers. God, how I hate pot stickers. The thought of them fills me with an infinite sadness.
I believe the restaurant was trying to be considerate because I said I 'no pepper' on my order after reading another review mentioning the extreme amount used on their food. When they couldn't reach me by phone, they just decided to bring me something that I didn't order instead. That was a mistake. Just bring me the stupid rangoons.
They did offer to make it up to me on my next order, but that will not be happening because the rest of the food was so bad that we had to throw it away uneaten.
Went for the $5.95 lunch buffet (Monday-Friday from I think 11am-2pm.) There were four or five kinds of sushi, and a selection of Thai noodle dishes. The sushi was decent, and the red curry I had was fine except I forgot that I don't like Thai curry (give me Indian curry ANY day.)
If you go for the buffet, that's ALL you can get. So don't go during lunch unless you want the buffet, which is an incredibly good deal.
Also, the waitress never asked if we wanted something besides water to drink.
Located in the heart of Boystown, this place is great for laughs and late night sushi. If it wasn't for my friends invite and her coupon, I don't think I would have ever ate here. With that being said, I followed some Yelp reviewers sushi recommendations and the Drag Roll was phenomenal! I remember the first time I tried this, it was like a blast full of flavor in my mouth (no pun intended). I wish they had this at the other sushi joints that I would normally go...
You would expect services here to be great, late at night, but they were only sub par. Even though, the restaurant was a quarter full, I expected better from them... We didn't get our food until almost an hour later when we placed our order in... But, the BYOB/W and good company, kept us distracted.
I'll be honest, I was pretty surprised by the food quality at this place. Â Went here on a Monday night as it is a 3 minute walk from my house, but I had never previously been.
The atmosphere is... interesting, it is a very weird layout for a restaurant, and the service was actually pretty poor. Â We got menus right away but had to waive down the waiter to take our order about 10 minutes later.
That being said, the food was really really good. Â The pot stickers seemed soggy but were actually perfectly cooked. Â The sushi rolls were both incredibely fresh and well crafted. Â And they were worth the money as I hate places that give you a tiny roll for $12. Â This stuff was legit. Â Lastly we got a chicken stir fry dish which also was very fresh and a good portion size. Â Would definitely go back to this place again.
The food is extremely overpriced to start. Â I ordered some sashimi and the fish had a terrible odor, and the size of it was so small it was laughable. Â They also put the sashimi in the same foil (yes metal) as a cooked roll we ordered so it was well cooked by the time we got it.
The delivery driver was just ridiculous. Â She could not speak a word of English, which I really don't care about, except that she did not grasp the concept of a door buzzer, and you try to explain that to someone over the phone when they call you STANDING NEXT TO THE BUZZER. Â Not to mention she had her daughter with her on the delivery who was attempting to break the front door of my building by constantly pulling on a locked door (yes you stupid little girl, if it was locked before, it will still be locked now, until someone unlocks it).
I called to complain and they hung up on me. Â NEVER AGAIN. Â Avoid at ALL costs.
Thanks to GrubHub for rectifying the situation and providing a refund, they are the saving grace...
This review is strictly for the buffet, because that's all I've had. For $5.95 there were 4-5 kinds of sushi (stuff was rotated in & out), three kinds of soup (including miso & tom yum), pad thai, crab rangoons (the fancy kind, not just cream cheese), 4 chicken dishes (including incredible ground ginger chicken), a beef dish and a couple vegetable dishes.
It is insufficient to say this was a good deal. It was an INCREDIBLE deal. If I worked closer I would have lunch there 3 times a week (it's weekdays only).
Buffets last until 3:30 pm, which is very nice if you have a non-traditional lunch hour (like I do).
Again, don't know anything about the a la carte, but the buffet was amazing.
Addendun: Â Must add that the atmosphere is pretty minimal. They just kind of set the food out there. This wouldn't be a good place to take a date unless they care more about substance than form. Hmm...unless you wanted to take them there as part of an elaborate test.
Ick. Â The 4am close time should have been my first warning. Â The overwhelming fishy smell that hits your nose as soon as you walk in the door should have been my second. Â The fact that the place was empty besides our table and two others on a Saturday night should have been the final straw. Â Instead..I threw caution to the wind and ordered up some sushi.
On the plus side, the miso and seaweed salad were very good and the server was very nice. Â On the downside, the California role reeked of seafood (hard to do when using imitation crab) and the aftertaste was not pretty. Â The paradise roll was decent but way too pricey in my opinion.
If it weren't for my groupon, I wouldn't have given Diva a try. Â I'm warning you, coupon or not, this is not the place to get your sushi fix. Â Especially with Jai-yen so close.
Late-night restaurants get an extra star in my book. Late night delivery restaurants do God's work.
The food at Diva is solid, and their delivery estimates are accurate. I wouldn't put this place at the top of my list if it was dinner time, but they're definitely at the top of my 3AM delivery list.
Their Pad Thai is good, though asking for it spicy seems to do nothing to the final product.
Their pad see-ew has a tendency to be gummy and overcooked. It's probably better eaten IN the restaurant.
My only real problem with the food is the lack of seasoning. If your expectations are low, this place will pleasantly surprise you... If you're looking for the best Thai food of your life, look elsewhere.
I have to say that I love Diva and the stronger reason might not be their food but the schedule of this restaurant!!!!
I have been living in Chicago over 4 years now and the one complaint that I have is how early the city closes... In big cities like London, NY or Berlin you are able to get anything @ anytime, but Chicago is not like that; if you get hungry after midnight you are limited to very few options and most of the times not very healthy food... Tacos, pizza... Well, Diva serves really good sushi and Thai food until 4am!!!! I would lie if Saying that it us the best sushi ever, but it is very good, fresh and open late!!
Gotta love it!!
If Diva Sushi was a drag queens, I would triple-snap oh-no-no-no her and make fun of her hair. Â Poor, poor, Diva Sushi. Â All dressed up and no where to go.
This place was trying too hard to be a lounge when they should have been putting more effort on their food and staff. Â The food was mediocre, at best, the ambiance was way too loud, and really, they were trying to make the place super super gay. Â Really, a "drag queen" roll? Â Overpriced and below-average quality.
Luckily, I used a groupon, but it still didn't seem worth it.
'DIVA' sits in what was once the beautiful 44th Ward Dinner Party. The decor has been completely revamped for the worse - once warm walls white-washed and pasted with cheesy Asian stock photos. This review is for their lunch buffet:
There is no 'real' sushi on the buffet, per se - the closest you will get to fish within these 3 vegetarian options is the kelp with which one roll is wrapped. The quality of the sushi, in relation to freshness, is fine - and not lacking in flavor - it's just hard to get over the complete absence of fish. But hey - it's a $5.99 deal.
There are 5 or 6 Thai dishes offered - the chicken and firm tofu, along with chopped, cooked veggies are quite juicy and good - yet the Pad Thai noodles with which said proteins are mixed are TERRIBLE: hard, dry, overly fishy - others have noted this...you're better off with Cup o' Noodles, flavor and texture wise. They offer 3 soups (Hot n Sour, Veggie, and Miso). I tried the Hot n' Sour, which reeked heavily of fish oil and was WAY overly fishy - sushi compensation, perhaps? (Nothing short of gross, imo). The only dessert offered is a tray of orange slices.
Saving grace: aside from the chicken and tofu being satisfying - they offer beef as well; I just didn't indulge - the spring rolls are perfectly crisp, and not too greasy. Yum. The salad bar is limited, but fresh. They offer a tangy Orange dressing, which I liked.
All in all, this place is entirely too hit or miss to revisit for lunch, and relatively limited for a buffet. I have to agree with Jessica N: "While it is only $6, there are tons of Thai/Asian places in the neighborhood that have $6 lunch specials (Jitlada, Joy's, Cozy), to name a few. While they aren't buffets, the quality is better, so I don't know if I'll be back here."
Perhaps, their more high-end rolls and sashimi better represent what they're capable of - and for God's sake: do not order the noodles.
PS I was never asked what I would like to drink, or if I would like a drink - the waitress (who was very sweet) simply served water, refilling frequently, making no mention of options. There are no drinks on the buffet itself. Everyone else there (2 other tables, at noon) were simply drinking water, as well. *Shrug.
This is a block away from where I live so I figured I had to try the $6 sushi/thai lunch buffet. Especially after they gave away samples of sushi on the street this weekend and what I tried was pretty tasty.
Unfortunately, the delicious salmon they gave away, was not at the sushi buffet. None of the sushi offered had actual fish in it, which was a disappointment, though not surprising for a $6 buffet.
Thai food was ok. Basil beef was the best dish, everything else just mediocre.
The waitress that was there was very sweet. Attentive, letting us know when they had refilled dishes. She also let us know it's their 2nd week open so she asked us to share comments/feedback, which we did on our check.
While it is only $6, there are tons of thai/asian places in the neighborhood that have $6 lunch specials (Jitlada, Joy's, Cozy) to name a few. While they aren't buffets, the quality is better so I don't know if I'll be back here.
Why did I go back?
I recently ordered online and walked over to pick up my food. Â I've done this at Joy's countless times, and the food is always ready before I get there - 10 minutes, tops. Â I walked the same distance to Diva, and arrived to an incredulous woman who told me that I just placed the order 5 minutes ago (it was 10) and that she hopes that I don't expect the food anytime soon. Â
Seriously.
So I was polite and said no problem, and sat for twenty minutes while the kitchen worked on my order. Â I tipped her $3 for my two-entree (cheap) order. Â (no matter how awful service is, I always tip at least 15%) She pointed for me to sit at a small shamehole of a table, crowded with silverware rolls and cleaning supplies. Â She didn't thank me at all when she finally brought out my food. Â She just plopped it on the table and walked away.
The noodles were probably the blandest I have ever had in my life, but maybe everything tasted worse because the food was coated in her dripping resentment and open hostility.
I'm never going back and would rather have a Cup o' Noodles than their food. Â I just wish Joy's was open later!
I have been here 3 times and now will never go back.
1. we ordered thai food - if u are like me and know what real thai food is - dont order it here. The curry is watered down and the meat is not good
2. we ordered sushi - good for late night sushi - mexican roll, dragon and spicy salmon are good
3. we ordered sushi - i was trying to get the same things i ordered last time considering it will turn out satisfying. Um..the rice was stale!!!! Either the rice was old or reheated. The only reason we decided to go here was the weather sucked and no other sushi place was open.
One thing i would say - we did send the sushi back and just ended up drinking - it did ruin our date - but they did not charge us! That was very impressive considering most ethnic resturants don't really know good Customer Service that we are used to in American/Frachise restuarants.
For that I will give them an extra STAR.
Let's start with a simple if-then hypothesis formulation exercise (this is such a throwback to Adv. Bio, right?):
If Jelena eats more sushi, then she'll be healthier (bring on the omega-3 fatties!).
If Jelena swaps out late-night burritos for late-night sushi, then she'll be more svelte!
If Jelena eats more sushi, then she'll have less money in her bank account.
If Jelena combines her two favorite activities (eating and drinking) at Diva, then she'll actually save money because Diva is BYOB.
Using a 95% confidence level, I'd conclude that all of the above are correct.
The sushi is legit, the service is stellar, the location is convenient (for me, anyway) and bigger picture analysis: Diva's changed the climate for late-night eating in Lakeview. And beyond, actually - because they deliver (into the wee hours). Well sushi me senseless, kids.
