I absolutely love oysters and have been on the hunt for good oysters in the area every since I've moved here. I've been to Doc's Magrogan's Oyster House in West Chester on two different occasions. Unfortunately both times I have been sorely disappointed! While the oysters were fresh, I had bits and pieces of the shell in almost ever half shell I got - and we must've ordered three or four dozens for 3 people. Such a shame!
Being that fresh oysters and seafood is their biggest draw... I would expect more from Doc Magrogan's! I do not plan to return to the restaurant again.
I went with a friend about 2 months ago and overall, we enjoyed it. This time, I went for a formal dinner with my family and it was a bad experience - none of us will ever return.
To start things off, we made reservations and were seated at the back of the restaurant where every 20-60 seconds, a door would slam. The heavy slam of the door was noticeably distracting and shook our booth! It would interrupt our conversation and made it difficult to enjoy our meal. So, we had to move tables. However, the waitress - who was less than friendly and outgoing and only grew more sour faced as the night continued - found it appropriate to then move us to a seat directly across the bar instead, without telling us where we were going first. This new seat was hardly better, though we supposed it was the lesser of two evils.
As the meal continued, we ordered lobster macaroni and the Asian shrimp for appetizers. Both were good, yet we did not get bread and butter until after our appetizers were served and cleared from our table, which we found to be a little odd. Usually, bread and butter comes first, doesn't it? Though it was not too big of a deal in and of itself, it only reflected on how unorganized and out of sorts the waitstaff seemed.
We ordered our mains, and here is where things became even more problematic. One member of the party ordered filet with potato and green beens, and the beans were crunchy and uncooked, the potatoes dry, and the filet very fatty. Later when our extremely pleasant waitress returned with her typically less than interested attitude to our table, we expressed our concern about the filet and vegetable plate when she asked how the food was...yet she barely reacted with more than an annoyed 'sorry', as if we had done something wrong. If a waitress is going to inquire about the meal but then does not do anything for her displeased customer, why even bother asking in the first place, I wonder...?
I ordered lobster with corn and potatoes, and this was my first time ordering a real lobster dish. I had tried lobster previously and loved it; I figured if Docs is supposed to be an esteemed seafood restaurant, why not try a classic dish? However, for such an expensive plate, I was extremely disappointed. My 35 dollar entree came served without anything to crack the shell and no cocktail fork; another waiter helping the waitress serve acted annoyed when asking for utensils and a plate (can you see a theme here? The waitstaff is either overworked or simply unfriendly!); and the lobster was EXTREMELY tough and chewy, to the point where I was unable to cut it properly, if at all, and it tasted disgusting! Lobster is mild, but it is NOT supposed to be tough and 100% flavorless. I was very displeased. A new waitress I had to flag down appeared vexed though tried to help me. Then, someone - presumably the manager - came instead of our original server and we were told a new lobster plate would be served 'in just a few moments'...yet even after having the chef come out to reassure us, I did not receive my new lobster until 10:05 PM. I waited well over half of an hour for the new lobster plate. Admittedly, I was slightly pissed when our original waitress came out with the lobster just as we were getting ready to leave, and asked if she could box it up. I felt like telling her to take the box and shove it!
It was simply because by that point, we were very tired and tired of being at the restaurant where things had gone from bad to worse. After having at least four different waiters, three of which were aloof and annoyed, and terrible service along with mediocre food, we wanted OUT. Thankfully, the lobster was taken off of the bill, yet for a less than satisfactory evening we paid close to 80 dollars.
The bottom line: Do not waste your time at this restaurant. Food is a hit or a miss, unpredictable quality and service! There is NO consistency with service and food at Doc Magrogans. Please save your time and money and go to a refutable and classy restaurant such as McCormick and Shmicks or someplace else decent. This restaurant is best for those who want to mess around at the bar and order apps vs. for a group or party coming for a nice lunch/dinner. (And on a final note, I feel it's good to mention that if you're looking to be able to hear by the end of the night, AVOID AVOID AVOID.)
We were all in the mood for good seafood and Doc Magrogan's did not let us down!
We ordered the calamari, New England chowder, and fresh Oysters for appetizers. The chowder was one of the best I've tasted- ranking among those tried in Boston. As for the main course, we ordered the lobster roll with fries and Oyster Po Boy with fries. Both were delicious!
The service was great. Also, the atmosphere was very relaxing in the outside seating and we were able to enjoy the food in beautiful weather.
The only downside would be the dessert. They only had various mousses to offer. I was hoping for other dessert items other than mousses.
The quick version:
Service: S  l  o  w
Food: Good
Atmosphere: Nice
My brother and I were looking for a seafood place to take our elderly father. Doc Magrogans filled the bill. The hostess was quite accommodating and seated us at a table that both had plenty of room and was out of the main traffic pattern.
Our waiter greeted us quickly, but there was an odd, lengthy lull between every part of our order, Just getting glasses of water took a while.
The food, when it arrived was good. An assortment of chowders was good - the yellow squash bisque was the best. Fried calamari was crisp, and the sauce had good heat to it. My Dad's filet, was, well, a filet - neither good nor bad. My brothers bouillabaisse was more a hearty fish stew over pasta, but it was still good. My swordfish was fine.
I would not go back for a fancy meal, but I would gladly return for a cozy meal with friends.
My wife and I went here for an early Valentines day dinner and we had a great time.
First the good. The food and drinks were excellent. The beer menu was a little on the shorter side, but they had a nice variety of draft and bottled beer, My wife ordered an alcoholic lemonade (the name escapes me) which I tasted and I can say it was dangerously good. We started with a half perfect storm which is raw clams and oysters crab and shrimp. It was pretty decent considering how far inland we are (although my clams were slightly gritty.)
For my entree I got the sirloin/ crab cake combo. The steak was delicious, definitely a quality cut of meat. The crab cake was slightly bland but the sauce really helped to pep it up. The sides were excellent and complimented the food nicely. My wife had the scallops which I can say were pretty damn good (and I'm not a scallops fan.) Desserts were tasty but small we ended up getting ice cream on the way home to satisfy the sweet tooth.
The atmosphere was really nice. It has a friendly, old-world, everything is handmade look to it, but both the restaurant and the bathrooms were very clean. The temperature in the restaurant was great (it was a very cold day) but the bathrooms were frigid. There decor consisted of old and new pictures and knickknacks and really helped to enhance the ambiance.
Now for the bad. Our server was, there's no other word for it, incompetent. We had to ask for our water and he didn't remember to get it until after our appetizer was on the table, he did not know the specials and had to go ask his manager several very basic questions about the menu. It sometimes took several minutes for him to go get us something as simple as a refill. My wife's dish was missing one of it's sides and when she pointed that out he said "I was wondering about that". I really think he was upset because we interrupted him hitting on the new bartender and it showed in his service. Â Frankly he is the only reason that Doc's isn't rated five stars.
Overall Doc's had great food, great drinks and a really nice atmosphere and I would go there again, I would just make sure we sat in a different section.
Hope this helps.
In a clamshell: the food was pretty darn good. The service sucked.
Went on a busy Saturday night. After missing our reservation due to traffic, the hostess helped us to get seated right away. That was awesome. The restaurant is beautiful. We were told that the menu was new this weekend. Everything looked good, so maybe the menu is a bit too big, but that's not really a problem. After looking over the menu for a few minutes, the waitress came over to give us a "tour" of the menu. Dear Doc M's: This is not people's first time eating in a restaurant. No one needs a tour of the menu.
Ordered some oysters, which were FANTASTIC! Loved the Shooting Points-had never tried those before. Then the waitress came back to give us a tour of the menu (yes-another one). Remember, by this point, we had had menus for almost 20 minutes. We cut her off and told her we were ready to order. It took about 25 minutes for apps to come out. The clam chowder, a special this month, had a great flavor profile, but was definitely too thick, and for a $9 caesar salad, it was way too small. Entrees were very good, but definitely on the small side. Lobster roll was NOT served on buttered brioche, but instead on a small hoagie roll with bland fries. Grilled and blackened swordfish were both delicious.
In the future, I think we would definitely go back, because the food was very good. But, you might be better off just getting a bunch of appetizers and items from the raw bar considering the size of the entrees. I hope they do away with the menu tours, and the coupons at the end offering free appetizers. That's cheesy.
Only went here for a friends happy hour, but ended up getting some appetizers. While they were decent, there was nothing outstanding about them. Got calamari and crab dip. The calamari was good, but came with just marinara sauce, wish it was a diff house made sauce like some other places have. The crab dip was good, but again nothing special. Needed more crab in it, and by the time you're done you have dip left and no more bread to dip in it...
Review Source:Went here for a New Year's Eve dinner and I was not disappointed. Beautiful atmosphere in a nautical theme with dark wood walls and gold textured ceilings.
Our waiter Jesse was very attentive and knowledgeable. Started out sharing lobster bisque soup and mussels in red sauce. The soup was flavorful but there was no sign of lobster. The mussels were incredible. The red sauce had a light garlic taste that did not over power the taste of the mussels-excellent!
I had the linguini fra diovalo as my main course. Generous portions of shrimp, scallops and calamari. It was delicious but I prefer it with a hotter kick. Just a personal preference.
At this point I was stuffed so I ordered coffee. Jesse came by with desserts in glasses presented on an oar. I had the raspberry mousse and it was incredible. The perfect ending to a great meal.
Doc's is awesome! Love the buck-a-shuck Mondays and the 2 for $25 Tuesdays. Â Their cocktail and beer specials are normally good. Nice atmosphere and service is normally great.
Only downfall is the menu lacks some charisma as it doesn't yell I gotta have that!
Oysters are amazing! Â Blue Points!
This is the second time I've walked out of Doc's disappointed.
First things first, I really wanted to like this place: Its in a great location in West Chester, has outdoor seating, great oyster selection, and is one of the few exclusive seafood restaurants in the area (I love seafood).
We went here in a group of 7 for my good friend's girlfriend's birthday.
Sat at the bar for drinks waiting for the rest of the party, bartender was friendly and beers are beers.
As the other people arrived we were seated immediately in the back corner.
While the waitress was friendly, she was clearly new, and not trained very well. She did not know the specials, or the drink policy of the day (let us order an unavailable drink for that day).
I ordered 2 apps, a pound of sauteed littleneck clams, and half dozen oyster on the half.
First the clams: Portion was skimpy, barely a dozen. Clams were cooked properly but were very gritty, broth was over-reduced and way too salty.
Oysters: The waitress got my order wrong and gave me 2 of the wrong kind. no big deal. But the quality of the oysters were sub-par at best. The guy shucking the oysters had no idea of what he was doing; they were mangled, i mean like he stuck the knife into the oyster, blended it, pried it open, poured the liquor out and threw it on a metal pan, with jarred cocktail sauce, and a lemon. There was barely half the oyster left. At practically $3 a piece, i was disappointed.
I ordered the crab cake sandwich as a main. The waitress got the order wrong, and I received the crab cake entree. Sent it back, came back to me on a stale bun (the one crab cake from the previous plate), was cold, tasted of being previously frozen, and definitely canned crab meat, and now included a side of frozen french fries.
I shook my head as a got the bill and signed the $70 check (just for my food and drink).
Such a shame, this place has so much going for it, just bad management.
I will not be going back.
Located in downtown West Chester, Doc Magrogran's is a great place for dinner or for a happy hour. Â
I went here recently for dinner after work with friends. Â I wasn't in the mood for seafood (I know) so I had their chicken sandwich with fries and it was good. Â My friends got the big steam pots of seafood. Â They are messy but tasty. Â I didn't drink but the table enjoyed the watermelon margarita.
Service was quick and friendly. Â They have outdoor seating if the weather is nice. Â I would definitely come back!
This place is pretty chill as a bar. Â The music isn't so loud that you have to scream to be heard, and there are two different seating areas for different moods (the college kids tend to hang downstairs, the older crowd in the sports bar-ish area upstairs). Â It's legendary with WCU kids for its $5 fishbowls, some kind of gatorade and who knows what concoction that gets you good and drunk for cheap.
Review Source:Doc's has a a great ambience. From the gas lights outside to the warm woods inside it's a place that you admire the details while you eat. The drink selection is good and the menu had quite a few good choices. I recently had the lobster steam. It was well done and tasty. Â The service was friendly, comfortable and attentive. Bottom line- Â I wold go back when I want fresh raw bar seafood and a good place to enjoy a meal with friends.
Review Source:My friend took me here for my birthday. We wanted to go somewhere nice for a yummy meal. And I wanted to go somewhere i never tried. We went on a Wednesday night around 8:15 pm. There was no wait got seated right away and the waiter was very friendly. The menu is a sheet of paper with lots of options, mostly seafood though, my favorite.
For an appitizer we got the cease and desist fries which were fries with crab and cheese fondue over them. The fries were the perfect crispiness and the fondue was a thick, semi chunky cheese sauce. it tasted like crab but didn't actually taste crab chunks at all so must have been very finely chopped up. It was different but really good.
For my entree i decided to get the fresh fish catch. you get to pick from 7 types of fish, pick the way you want it cooked and then pick the suace you want over it. I got Mahi Mahi grilled with lemon butter sauce. There was a good size of fish grilled perfectly but unfortunately i wasn't a fan of the sauce, too much lemon for me so i just scraped it off. My meal also came with mashed potatoes and a vegetable. Masked potatoes were amazing and the vegetable was cut up squash, zucchini, peppers, and snap peas cooked in some type of sauce. they were good, not overcooked.
My friend got the surf and turf with a 6 oz filet and crab cake. the filet was the perfect size and looked like it cut very easily. unfortunately she asked for medium well and it was more medium so had to send it back. The crab cake was good, i know because i tasted it lol. Her meal also came with the potato and vegetables.
Overall i think it was a great resturaunt. I will def go back. very fresh seafood, big selection. yummo!
My wife and I dined here on 12/17/11. We had a $20 birthday coupon that we received in the mail. Â Let me start with the only positive I can offer. the waiter that took care of us ws very friendly and efficient through the entire meal. Kudos to this young man. Now the bad. I ordered 6 oysters, the special of the night as an appetizer. They were so small, I could barely find them. Â For an entree, I had the seafood salad, again, so small, I finished in 5 minutes. Considering the prices in this place vs. what you get, it is way overpriced, and I will not return. Do yourself a favor, when in West Chester, go up the street from this place to either the Iron Hill or Ryans Pub, and get a far better meal for a more reasonable price.
Review Source:We just went to Doc Magrogans for dinner last night and it was out of this world. Â We will definitely be going back. Â The food was amazing and so was the service. Â We ordered oysters from the raw bar for an appetizer and they were so good we ended up ordering a second batch. Â Our server's recommendations were right on the money. Â They were the best I've ever had. Â If you like seafood this is definitely one place you must go.
Review Source:First time at Doc's and I will be back. Took my wife here for lunch on her birthday. Very cool atmosphere. The oyster selection is extensive and the products are FRESH. The girls doing the shucking cleaned the oysters like pros. I thought the oyster menu's description was a little off. Â As a certified oyster geek I'm suprised when I order "Bright & Clean" and get "Rich & Creamy"...don't get me wrong, as long as it's a fresh oyster I love it! I was very disappointed however in the flat, one note vinagar minette that came with oysters; not sure if it was old or just over looked.
My wife had her first lobster roll and was blown away. Spending 6 years in the Boston area, I have to concur...WOW! Â The lobster was cooked expertly and dressed simply, the roll had the wonderful contrasting crispness. Unfortunately the calamari was pretty soggy and the spicy marinara was no where near spicy; I'll skip that in the future for sure.
The oysters-doc-a-feller was good, the oysters were not over cooked and all the ingredients were fresh. Â The Cease & Desist fries and cheese fondue sauce was also good, I'm typically not a big fan of this type of dish but I was happy we ordered it. Â Solid Fries and the cheese fondue wasn't oily or overdone.
One wonderful surprise was dessert. They all come as small bites and are fantastic. Especially worth noting is the Key Lime Pie. All the staff was attentive, cheerful and thoughtful. Â We will be back!!!
Preface:
Penn State reunion at a friend's housewarming party in WC. Daylonging beforehand, and finally making it out to the bar around...9pm? 10? Umm...
This place smells like fish when you walk in. Or, rather like a fish tank that needs a good scrub. Upstairs bar = much better. Apparently the thing to get here is Fishbowls, which is basically one of those plastic fishbowls (imagine that.) filled with liquor and mixers. They remind me of the fishbowls at Bar Bleu in State College. My only issue is, just like at my favorite Penn State bar, you are  likely to get diabetes following consumption of this concoction. The blinking lights everywhere was a nice touch.
I ended up ordering Diet Cokes and water here though, since the last thing I needed at this point was more booze. However, just because I don't need something, doesn't mean I didn't want it....
Onto the next bar!
I had an awesome time here. One of the most fun meals of my life. We got the 4 lbs seafood boil out at the "Shore Shack", which is their back patio. Everything in the seafood boil was amazing. We also loved the oysters and the fisherman's stew.
The winner was probably the cease and desist fries. The fries are super crispy and they are covered in a mixture of cheese fondue and crab meat. We about lost our minds. The hush puppies were excellent as well.
All and all, great food. I will have to go back one day and give the regular menu shot.
Doc Magrogan's happens to be many people's go-to oyster/clams/overall seafood place whereas for me, Doc serves as a lovely place to get crunk-a-dunk.
I have not frequented this place during any hours that would be suitable for lunch or dinner so I don't have much to say about their food selections- with that being said, my friends and I are mostly found sometime past 10 when the place is pumping with some good jams and flowing with $5 fishbowls and a whole lotta college kids and or yuppies.
The DJ on deck is surprisingly up to date with the music, the bartenders are friendly and accommodating and the place is pretty spacious. One thing I noticed is that the bathroom scene is mighty intense from time to time, I once witnessed a 10+ men waiting in line for the restroom and at another time I was asked by a lovely, mostly inebriated lady to help her pull her jeans up cause "they was too tight." true story.
The seafood (oysters, clams, etc.) was fresh but the presentation was so-so.
I ordered the Perfect Storm raw bar plate. I mean this should be a typhoon of seafood, right? They brought out this big tray, the waiter's holding it high over his head like "wait until you see this when I put it down, you're going to freak", and then it's just all filled with ice and lame. Where's my pile of seafood? I want the bounty of the ocean, treat me like I'm Poisiden! Look, I'd pay more, just lay it on me!
Sadly, I turned to the peel and eat shrimp to fill up. It worked but I left with stinky seafood face and fingers. NOT recommended if you plan to cruise the bar scene later, if you know what I mean.
Fun drinks for the ladies, try the Orange Crush if you want to get wrecked. Waitress was in a good mood too. Nice area outside to sit. But they have competitors in the neighborhood with fresh seafood...
This is my go-to place for fresh raw oysters and clams. Unlike some of the reviews below, I'm judging this place on the quality and taste of their oysters. After all, it's called the OYSTER house. I wouldn't go into a steakhouse, order a fish dish, then complain about how it didn't live up to my expectations.
The place looks great on the outside with a classic oyster house feel. Inside is dimly-lit and welcoming, with a warm and friendly staff. I always order a dozen of their raw clams. Clams have more taste and texture than oysters, they are absolutely divine. Then dozens of raw oysters are ordered from their ample daily selections menu. If I do order something on the side, it would usually just be fries or the peel 'n eat shrimp. Just something little, the oysters are the main attraction.
I go back to this place time and time again, and am never disappointed.
Oh, and $1 oysters on Mondays. Can't beat that!
Deiced we would finally try the food at Doc's since we have lived in West Chester for two years and yet to eat there. Headed in around 8 o'clock , hostess was really nice got a cozy table in back where it was nice and quiet. After a 9 hour day at work the one thing i wanted was a pint of Guinness and that's exactly what i got! Beer selection was decent, nothing crazy but they had enough.
That night they where running a special on "FISH BOWLS" which in my opinion is just watered down flavored liq in a cheap plastic bowl that is just the most annoying thing to walk around with. But if you are a freshman at W.C.U. and or a chick that wants to get "Wild" on a sugar high, its something that you might enjoy.
So onto the food. I started off with there Fried Fresh Buffalo Mozzarella which had to be some of the best Ive ever had. I assumed that the "Buffalo" was for the fact that there where pretty large. Come to find out they where made with Buffalo milk. Main course was Doc's Signature Burger, nothing out of the ordinary just a delicious burger with fries . My girl friend went with there Steamed P.E.I. Mussels. From what she said they where delicious except for the occasional grains of sand!
All in all a great restaurant, does start to get loud and over crowded after 9:30 but that's like most places in down town West Chester.
Let me start by saying I used to LOVE this place, and went at least every month for oysters (Mario the bartender was great). With that said, I went twice recently with a friend for the Monday $1 oyster special (such a deal), and we both got sick both times. The second time was quite bad, in fact. Now, I knew that a special on oysters means they aren't quite as fresh, but selling oysters that are obviously too old is inexcusable. It was never a problem until recently, but fool me twice and I won't get fooled again...
Apart from that, the menu is nearly all seafood, so if you insist on going, make sure all guests are okay with that.
I'll say I'm not a frequent visitor, but it is a Oyster bar in West Chester! Â
It has a great Oyster house feel. Â If your not up for seafood, it's not great, but seafood is good, and the specials are tasty. Â Nachos are NOT good. Â Besides the Nachos the food has been consistently tasty.
The clam chowder is nice, and off hour provides good service.
We don't go often (not kid friendly), as well we don't go for dinner due to wait, noise, and quality of service (which drops to the floor).
Went here on a Saturday night in time for the live band and fish bowl special. It was my very first fish bowl and I've been anticipating it for a long time. I got the Blue which was ok, a bit strong but for $5, you get a lot for what you paid for. Our waitress was very friendly and the place was nicely decorated and fun without being dingy. Food was really steep ($9 for 10 wings, pasta dishes were $16-$18). We just went for calamari (OK) and a berry tart (yum!).
The band was great, totally got people moving. When they were taking a break, they played a mix-music-video set that was surprisingly really good and even got my boyfriend dancing (the transitions between songs were really good...I'm all about transitions lol)
Definitely come here for the $5 fish bowls, $3 soco lime shots, music, and service. You also have the option to sit down with your drink and chill with friends before getting up to get rowdy. Don't come here for food unless you got some green to spend.
PS Park a block down Gay street, its free!
I've only eaten here once.....but my experience was not great. Â Food was pretty typical and service was poor (typical for a college town). Â The bar scene is worse than the food. Â Very fratty atmosphere and horrible music. Â Pretty much your typical frat boy bar scene. Â On the plus side, the building is very nice.
Review Source:Went here for my birthday last year and it was pretty good. Â I'm a big fan of oysters and I admit they we're better than I thought. Â They didn't oversalt the shooters which some places tend to do from time to time. Â For my entree i had salmon which was made just right and not too dry. Â Definitely want to get back for some crab legs soon.
Review Source:The place is beautiful, great Monday night $1 oysters and PBR pounder specials.  But that's about it.  I enjoy quality food and I'm willing to pay for it if its good,  but  Doc's does not deliver in this dept.  I've had better seafood dinners at Red Lobster.  Seriously.  Food just doesn't live up to the atmosphere.
Review Source:I'm always wary when the menu says something like "Seafood Salad" or "Seafood Fondue" without explaining which varieties of seafood is included, because I am picky about my shellfish. Â I don't have any allergies, I just don't like certain shell fish and crustaceans. Â Besides this is like saying "Meat Salad" Â (The first thought that comes to my mind is "mystery meat". Â What am I eating?). Â
So having said that, I ordered a crab cake.  My friends ordered the french fries topped with  their signature "Seafood Fondue".  I tried it, and while it tasted good, I still had no idea what kind of seafood was in this stuff.  Am I strange for being turned off by the mystery?  I don't usually mess around with my seafood.  I want to know its fresh, because we all know about its shelf life.
The menus here are those paper place-mat menus that are filled with names of dishes, and very small descriptions. Â So this was unfortunate, because the waiters didn't seem to know much about the food. Â I wasn't impressed at all with the service here. Â The waitress kind of had an attitude, even.
I do have to mention though, that the place looks good. Â I love the decor, and the feeling Doc Magrogans gives off. Â The outdoor seating looked fabulous. Â My friends were very impressed with their food. Â My crab cakes were pretty good, but I wasn't floored. Â This place is pricy if you don't take advantage of their specials. Monday nights seem the best value with 1$ Oysters and 1$ PBR Pounders.
Doc Magrogan's is an oyster house specializing in seafood. They're in downtown West Chester, so parking's cake: street metered parking is free after 5, and on weekends too.
Friends and I met up here to take advantage of their attractive Monday specials[1]: their "Buck-a-Shuck" special meant raw oysters were a mere $1. We indulged in half-off appetizers, $4 classic mojitos - surprisingly good, with a kick - and $1 PBRs.
At the bar, bartender Mario[2] paid a lot of attention to us. Shared a huge, awesometastic assortment of thirty (30) oysters, trying about EIGHT different varieties, freshly shucked in front of us, and were some of the best I've had in recent memory. While sklorking them down, we watched the Olympics on flat screen TVs, then washed everything down with a few oyster shooters full of vodka. Mmmm.
Doc Magrogan's has lots of seating, and outdoor tables too. As more folks showed up, we were corralled into a side dining room. Meghan, our brave, sole server, somehow managed to serve the twenty of us.
I'll be back to Doc Magrogan's for their oyster specials, just not to sit at a table - at least, not with such a gargantuan party. Check them out, and tell them Dave sent you[3].
[1] Certain happy hour specials run from 4-6pm, while daily specials run until midnight. See their web site for the latest!
[2] May have his name incorrect.
[3] They will be thoroughly confused if you do this.
UPDATE 28 December 2009: Apparently they don't have mango mojitos anymore? Call to verify availability...
If I ate oysters, I would probably be here every Monday for their $1 oyster special! Â Alas I don't... (dreaded shellfish allergy!!). Â But I'm totally here for their $4 mojitos! Â And they are actually only $3 from 4-6pm, but I got there too late for that special. Â Their regular mojito was deelish, but I had a sip of someone's mango mojito and WOW, that was one of the tastiest mojitos I've ever had! Â But cheap me, I decided to stick with the regular mojito because the mango ones were $8 I heard... Doc Magrogan's doesn't really look like a mojito bar, but it surprisingly must be. Â
Service was pretty good - Meghan (with an "H") was actually quite patient with our large party and I almost felt bad for her every time she had to come by with bad news of... "sorry we're out of mint leaves"... or "sorry we're out of clams". Â At least they had a large stock of oysters available.
Lastly I tried the salmon mac and cheese. Â Sound appetizing? Â I like mac and cheese and I like salmon - can't be that bad... it was OK, although I'm not even sure I saw or tasted any salmon, just the thick, somewhat burnt cheese on the side.
I love this place and I'm a frequent visitor. The first time I came here, they had a Wasabi Oyster special that they haven't had since. It blew me away and I keep coming back hoping that they will serve it again some day.
Besides that, the atmosphere is wonderful and the food has been consistently tasty. They have two fun oyster drinks as well: Slurp-a-burp which is an Oyster with cocktail sauce and lager or the Oyster shooter which is the same, but with vodka.
The oysters I've gotten there have been high quality and good-tasting. For the squeamish - I've never gotten sick. And on top of that the other dishes have been delightful.
The only problem I've had is that some nights they don't have enough people shucking the oysters which can cause really really slow service. But not to worry, this has only happened once in the several times I've been with family and friends.
