I have been here for lunch and passed by it a few times around nighttime. It is usually pretty empty. Foreshadowing!
Pros: Private lot (small, but in New Brunswick this is a plus), good flourless chocolate cake, clean areas, a nice assortment of beers on tap
Cons: overpriced mediocre food, small portions, below mediocre service despite being the only people in the restaurant, two out of six orders messed up and the waitress seemed irritated when we pointed it out
This is more of a grown folk's bar. They have a good selection of eats and drinks, including home-made desserts. They have plenty of tvs to catch the game. There's also an internet juke-box which has a good selection of music to groove to while enjoying your beer.
There's not much of a "dance floor", but that doesn't stop people from dancing on their own. I know I do!
They sometimes have special events going on during the week. It's a good place to have a work (or play) related function. I'm definitely putting Doll's on my New Brunz Bar Crawl list!
Nice bar with a lot of room to hang out, some of the drinks are pricey but they've got some great beers on tap that you don't normally see. My favorite seasonal beer they've got there is the Shipyard Punkin Head beer.... delicious! It's far enough away from the campus that you don't get annoying college kids but it's not a dive by any means, very nice, very clean. Really like this bar
Review Source:Pro: chili was pretty good, not too watery. Plus, they used genuine egg roll wrappers for their Thai chicken spring rolls. And it was expertly fried, not too greasy.
Con: those same two egg rolls cost eight bucks.
This place got the third star because I'm a sucker for properly fried egg rolls.
Not sure about the person that complained about location - this place is two blocks from the train station.
We went last night and took advantage of the weekday $25 dinner for two which included a bottle of wine, shared app, two entrees and a dessert. Â The food was good and the service was friendly and efficient. Â The main menu had a lot of options which we'll be back to try out.
Have been here a couple of times- usually just to have a couple of drinks (watched the Rutgers opener here today) or a stop before taking on other New Brunswick bars. I cannot attest to the food, since I've never eaten here, but for drink wise, it's pretty reasonable, and they have a good selection of beers on tap/bottled. Their drink specials are decent too, think a g&t or 7&7 for 3.00 or so. It's a quiet place, and the perfect place to watch the RU game, since there were fans but it wasn't packed to the brim with obnoxious people.
It's definitely a place for a post-college/older crowd, but that's fine if you need a break from Easton ave and other brunswick spots. The biggest draw is the location- the old Doll's was more prominent on 27-but there is ample parking across the street usually, and from my friend's neighborhood its a easy walk. The bartenders I've had here have always been friendly.
Definitely off the beaten path of New Brunswick. Has the potential to be a hidden gem, but instead it settles for being an outcast. I had a great night or two here, but the inconvenience of the location and it's loner status wasn't enough to keep me in. Staff needs to attend a let's-appreciate-life seminar because customers don't like contagious suicidal auras.
Review Source:A quieter bar in New Brunswick...the college crowd doesn't seem to bother coming here. Â Drinks are ok, but the food I've tried off the bar menu was terrible. Â I have never eaten wings or chicken fingers that were more dry and tasteless. Â The service isn't good either - one of the bartenders in particular gets extremely overwhelmed if there are more than 3 or 4 people sitting at the bar at once. Â He/she actually makes you feel like you're being rude when you're simply trying to order a drink.
Review Source:I went to Doll's Place Saturday night around 1am. It wasn't empty, but there were probably less than a dozen people there. You could actually hear your friends talking there, unlike most bars in New Brunswick. Like everyone else said, it's a bar and a restaurant, so don't expect a jumpin' college bar with dance music blasting. It was a nice respite from the crowded bars and busy bartenders of Easton Ave. We all got a table and shared 2 pints between the 8 of us, which were reasonably priced, and ended up staying till 2. All in all a nice place, we'll definitely be going again.
Review Source:- the atmosphere sucks.. the dining area was just.. weird.. i dont know what it was, but it was uncomfortable.. the food was crap on a plate, and overpriced for the crap on the plate..
- the bar at night sucks.. maybe it was the crappy music system, or the weird setup when they had bands, or the fact that it was way too bright..
- i obviously stopped going there..
It's a bar restaurant. Â I've only been here for lunch on a couple of occassions, so it's not too busy during those hours. Â Most of the patrons during lunch are lawyers, since the courthouse is nearby. Â the service is excellent, as is the food. Â I recall getting a red snapper filet sandwich (or something like that) and it was surprisingly well done. Â It seems like a classier place, as opposed to the other bars in the area.
Review Source:I've been here once with a large party and they gave us the whole top level and some excellent service. Â Everyone felt their food was decent and had a good, loud, fun time. Â The vibe here is pretty cool and could be enjoyed with a group of friends or without as most people here seem very friendly. Â The menu is all over the place so it's a good place to go with a group of your more tolerable and chill friends. Â Parking is interesting, but it is pretty much all over downtown NB. Â Use a lot and get some dessert because you'll walk it off on your way back to your car. Â Ha!
Review Source:I'm really shocked this place hasn't taken off more. The old Doll's was a phenomenon.
Always a friendly face at the bar, the jukebox spews (generally) fun tunes, and there is always a spot to sit down. Good selection of beers on tap.
They have a good lunch menu also - so stop by when you're not looking to get wasted and it's still light outside.
I loved this place my last year in college! Â The bartender isn't there anymore, but she was great. Â The drinks are reasonably priced and it's a good place to hang out and actually talk. Â They serve food before 11pm so that's a plus too. Â I love the pineapple amaretto they serve there for $4. Â Oh, how I miss it.
Review Source:Oh Dolls. Â How I miss thee. Â I know, I know, it's still there but it's really not. Â The Dolls you'll find today is the new location. Â The old location was purchased by the hospital and torn down to create more parking. Â
Yes, you can still find an active night life at Dolls with all your favorite New Brunswick characters, but the old Dolls ruled. Â You had to be there. Â As a poet once scribbled on the mens room wall, "Dolls place, the best place to piss in a mop bucket". Â I miss you.
