Don Coqui

I really wanted to like this place but there was nothing good about my experience. The guy who seated us acted like it was a chore that he had to be bothered. I ordered grilled shrimp with black bean rice. The rice was so dry and I found pieces of aluminum foil in it. Some of the pieces of shrimp weren't even fully cooked. My friend ordered what was supposed to be paella but in actuality was just a huge bowl of rice. I didn't think anything could be worse than the food but the service was. After our meals were served, we didn't see our waiter for 45 minutes. We were sitting there with our meals finished for 25 minutes. Our waiter finally reappeared. I was looking at him to get his attention. He looks back at me and just says 'did you want something?'  I said yes, our meal has been finished for 25 minutes already. He asked if we wanted dessert and we said no. He cleared the plates and resurfaces again 15 minutes later and asks again if we want dessert. I told him once again no, just get us the check. Another 15 minutes for the check. Bad food, even worse service. Skip this place. Sofrito down the street is way better.

not into the Latin scene, but went here one night for a friend's birthday party.
I'm not going to get into the music, etc as not my type of place, so wouldn't be fair to judge.

My main gripe, and I feel this is a reflection of the entire establishment, was the experience at the door.  First off, there was a line outside of about 30 people, when one could clearly see inside it wasn't even 1/4 packed.

My friend had a table and bottle service a long with a guest list, etc.  His girlfriend, who organized the party, came outside to get us and we were able to get to the front of the line.  As we were walking in, mind you having confirmed we were part of the party, the doorman blocked our way and tried to get 20 dollars from each of us.  When confronted by my friend as to why and what purpose, he just repeated its 20 dollars. We refused, and the doorman gave up and still let us in.  

My one drink did have a good amount of alcohol in it, the only bright spot.

I will never come back here again, though.

I had a wonderful experience here with my daughter the other day.  We ordered the empanadas for starters, I ordered the pork, and my daughter ordered the ox tail.  We both had drinks with our meals.  The portions were very hearty, and the food tasted delicious.  Our drinks were great - not too strong, but not weak.  I really enjoyed the Yucca chips - yum!  In the menu, the ox tail comes with avocado, but when our waiter brought out my daughter's plate, it did not have any avocado.  When I pointed this out to our waiter, he brought back a plate with extra avocado and a salad for her, and apologized for the mistake.

Granted, we had lunch on an afternoon that did not seem very busy; but we were both impressed with the amount of attention we got from the wait staff.  We would eat lunch here again.
