Two of my favorite things in the world! Â Sushi and Beer!
This is the best place in Louisville to get sushi, bar none, espeically now that Maido is out of the picture. Â They rotate the beers they keep on tap, but always make sure they have a new stout, porter and IPA ready to go. Â Staff is friendly; beer and food is affordable; atmosphere is nice.
Name of the game here is late night hours and decently priced. If you want knock your socks off, go to one of the dozens of boutique sushi places around town. There are even a few on the same street. This place serves edible, tasty sushi, good appetizers and a diverse menu if you have folks in tow who aren't in to the raw stuff.
They don't have fountain beverages so beware of that. Nachos were really good! Happy hour rolls are reasonably priced. Service was on point. It's not the best sushi in Louisville, but it is what it is, a hole in the wall on Bardstown Road with an eclectic wait staff, late night dining options, and affordable menu pricing in a town where it's hard to find edible sushi for less than $60 a couple. Enjoy.
Have you ever had a craving for tacos and sushi at the same time? Me neither. I couldn't quite figure Dragon King's Daughter out. Water served from a glass bottle, casual colors, and overpriced artwork on the walls just didn't send a cohesive message about the restaurant.
I ordered the Fried Stuffed Wontons for an appetizer, the Katsu Tacos, and the Dipity sushi. The Fried Stuffed Wontons with the sweet chili sauce were delicious - completely devoured them. They were crispy on the outside, soft and hot on the inside, and the sweet chili sauce perfected the dish. The entrées, however, left me disappointed. The chicken in the Katsu Tacos were far too crispy and crunchy, which didn't leave a lot of room for flavor. I'll note that the Wasabi Sour Cream offered as a side/topping for the tacos was an interesting flavor addition though. Next, the sushi dish was average. Nearly every sushi dish's menu description included the word "spicy". I didn't think it was very spicy, and suspect that the word may be overused on the menu.
Food aside, the service was great. The waiter was by our table with the right frequency that avoided being interrupting but still made sure waters were never empty.
All in all, I would only recommend DKD if you're craving tacos and sushi at the same time or if you just want to stop in for an appetizer (Fried Stuffed Wontons). After the appetizers, DKD has average sushi and average tacos. If you're craving only one of those items, there are plenty of other restaurants that do one or the other much better.
Meh is the word. Â Maybe we caught the kitchen on a bad day so Dragon King's Daughter will get a second chance. We have several friends who swear by the place but my wife and I were very disappointed with our recent visit.
The menu reads well enough but the execution / flavor fell way short. Our wasabi salsa was bland and contained nothing hinting at wasabi. The kimchi beef tacos were flavorless as well. Kimchi should smack you in the mouth, there was nothing there. Digging through the beef with chopsticks revealed one or two scraps of something that may have been cabbage but it all tasted like dried out plain ground round. Even the "japanese mayo" atop the beef was just mayo as best we could tell The wontons were basically cream cheese filled fried wrappers. Mini crab rangoon with no faux crab served with thai chili sauce from a jar (not lost on us was the fact that the chili sauce was easily the best thing we received). Â
If service is your thing, look out. Â We are easy going, like to take our time and graze but this was a bit much. Â Looooong wait for our app (the salsa) to come out, very few if any check ins from servers, the wontons, ordered as part of our entree, arrived 10-15 minutes late; well after the actual entree. Â We were already finished with the bland tacos by the arrival of that final disappointment. Â
Here's to hoping they read these reviews and get the execution up to par as they do have a decent casual atmosphere, affordable prices and quality beer list. Â Two apps and three tacos and the bill was under $20.00. Â Unfortunately, we agreed - it still wasn't worth it.
I'm always pretty skeptical about trying sushi in landlocked states, but this sushi was nice and fresh.
The rolls were extremely creative, and everything in their menu (sushi and entrees) was so creative and fun. I really wanted to try it all.
We had some pot stickers, wontons, and nachos for appetizers that were actually pretty delish.
Also, they had some cool beers to try.
Also, their servers were hottttt.
Fun place to go to, pretty affordable, and chill.
I LOVE THIS PLACE!!! I've worked 2nd shift hours for the majority of my working career so most restaurants are closed by 9 or 10 unless you really want fast food. Then my best friend introduced me to DKD and their late night Happy Hour. Holy smokes. I've NEVER had a bad experience there. The staff is always super friendly and anytime I've taken someone in their for their birthday or any surprise the staff is always super accommodating with anything I've asked.
I love the Ace Roll, There Went Drew, and The Indulgent. Love this place!
My boyfriend and I are avid sushi lovers and try at least 1-2 new sushi restaurants on a weekly basis, so we decided that this week we would try Dragon King's Daughter because of the rave reviews that I heard from friends, but were thoroughly disappointed.
For starters we had the Lemongrass Miso as recommended by our waitress, which was "okay." It was a different take on Miso so it took some getting used to but it really wasn't good or bad. I also ordered a hot green tea, which I always get with my sushi, and their green tea was absolutely delicious. They made it with matcha which tasted absolutely fresh and was wonderful to start to the meal with.
For dinner, we ended up trying three rolls including the Dragon King's Daughter, There went Drew, and Dipity. It's my firm belief that a restaurant's best sushi roll should be the roll named after their restaurant, but this roll was anything but great. It was very lack luster, needed more sauce, and was cold. The second sushi we had was the There Went Drew, which is apparently the 1 of the only 2 deep fried rolls that they offer, and it was just terrible. It wasn't very flavorful and it wasn't deep fried long enough so it tasted like raw dough. Aside from that, the roll was crying for eel sauce desperately and was too dry for the palette. The third roll that we tried was the Dipity and this roll was actually quite pleasant. It was simple but the salmon and avacado on top were delicious. The salmon was so good it could've been served as sashimi.
Overall, the meal was okay, but there was a lot of room for improvement. This was our first time eating here and they put us near the door where the heat never reached us (while other guests seemed very warm), and we also waited 52 minutes for our sushi to come out (even though we were only one of three couples in the building). Our waitress was also very nice, but not extremely attentive like we're used to, and the menu was very strange. Seeing tacos and sushi on the same menu was very different, but I can find a certain appreciation for the eclectic culture of the restaurant.
With all this being said, my boyfriend and I were so dissappointed with our meal that we ended up going to a sushi restaurant down the road who served us sushi within 5 minutes of our wait. We will not be having dinner here ever again.
No Dig.
We were so excited to try this place, but from the moment we walked in nothing went right. The place smelled of bad cleaning fumes. The waitress was super nice, but unfortunately was very slow. I mean 15-20 min between re-fills.. Â We only ordered Sushi. We loved the Idea of all of the rolls they had, the different combinations were very intriguing. But unfortunately they did not deliver on taste or texture. I'm hoping we can come back in 6 months and maybe they will have the Finished product.
Review Source:This place is great! You can't go wrong with anything on the menu. Also their happy hour is pretty boss. On nice days they open the windows. The place is very well kept and they keep you pretty stocked on wine bottles with fresh water. The food it's self is very healthy Asian fusion. Which tastes delicious and is always well presented. Leaving you wondering if you should eat or admire this piece of art. I recommend eating it so as to not miss out. Â Also the chicken Katsu Rolls are my personal fave.
Review Source:Good sushi and Asian-inspired fare. The menu is eclectic with Asian-style tacos and quesadillas (I know, a bit out of place but it my friends enjoyed them). I've eaten here a few times, and always had decent service. The sushi is better than the other food in my opinion, because the hot food on the menu has been inconsistent (sometimes really good, sometimes just ok). The beer menu is short, but they have a very good selection. It's a great place to take a large group of friends, especially if not everyone in the group likes sushi.
Review Source:I really enjoy eating at this place... it is by far one of the best Sushi spot in Louisville. who are we kidding it is the best Sushi spot in Louisville. Love the selection of rolls here and the fact the they have some awesome tacos which I can personally vouch for. Love the atmosphere here, the feel of the place is great, very low key and down to earth people working here. love the fried Goyza, they remind of the Yaki Mandu I had in Korea. Also the Wasabi Salsa is great for starters. There are times believe it or not that i have come here for their Taco's love the fact that they give you a starting point and you add your toppings. Did I mention that they have a few seats out side and open the 8ft windows on nice days so that you feel like you are seating outside. My only complaint is that they aren't open for lunch during the first part of the week. They also have Sushi specials late night or late night Sushi specials.
Review Source:While in Louisville last weekend, I was googling sushi spots in the area and Dragon King's Daughter caught my eye. I liked the interesting fusion aspect of the menu and some friends and I decided to give it a try on a Sunday afternoon.
The service was friendly and pretty efficient even though our waiter seemed to be the only staff on the floor. He seemed to know the menu well and answered all of our questions. We ended up ordering some cocktails, edamame with the wasabi powder, a Chupakarla roll and I had the tilapia tacos.
The edamame was served cold (which was different...) and the wasabi powder didn't add much flavor or spice. However, we ate it all and it was pretty good. We split the Chupikarla roll and that was good as well. Nothing super special, but good. I really liked the tacos and how there were so many toppings to choose from. They were heavy on the stomach from the fry-batter and I could only eat two, but I would recommend them.
What I like best about DKD is the selection of items and the creativity in the menu. Normally when I think of a large menu along with strange fusion, it doesn't seem well thought out or refined (and if a menu is huge...what does the kitchen really do well??...certainly not everything) BUT the items here do seem really cohesive and I like the variety, especially vegetarian options.
If I return in the future, I'd really like to try some of the other rolls. The tacos were great, but there were so many sushi options, I think everyone could find something special here and I do plan on coming back to check out the rest of the menu.
Along with the food, the website is VERY well done and the ambience of the restaurant is casual, welcoming and artsy. It fits in great with Bardstown Rd, but still stands out in cuisine, adding something memorable and different.
Been here a couple times the last few months. Loved the frosty sun beam but the two times i ordered it came out different. Â Once with a lovly mango slice on top but then the next time it came with a small mango bit in the roll and a slab of salmon on top. It was awful. Small selection of sushi. Shrimp tempura tacos are fab... our server did a poor job... i think one of the sushi rolls is even named after him...
Review Source:I'm a big fan of Dragon Kings Daughter. It has some similarities to its Frankfort Ave based sister restaurant, Maido, including some of the same Sushi rolls and appetizers, but there are a few distinct differences. While I rarely order from the Mexican side of the menu, I appreciate that it offers a variety of Asian and Mexican fused entrees.
I love that DKD offers 2 happy hours a day, 7 days a week. Whether im in the mood for sushi between the hours of 3pm and 6pm or 9pm and 11pm, DKD offers a whole menu of discounted Sushi and drinks.
I typically order a few things off of the happy hour menu and a few apps off the regular menu. The Dipity roll is one of my favorites. $7 gets you spicy crab, garlic, salmon and avocado. I also LOVE their miso soup for $3. It has a coconut milk broth with tofu and veggies that is more complex than any other miso soup i've had. I also really enjoy the fried veggie gyoza $4.
In terms of drinks, they offer a pretty decent $10 bottle of red or white wine during their evening happy hour. I also highly recommend the Shoshu cocktail with tonic and fresh grated apple for $6.
Being new to the area we have taken to reviews and local television to see where to dine. I caught an episode of "Secrets of Louisville Chefs", and The Dragon King's Daughter was featured. Me being a Foodie had to check them out
We were out and about and looking to get our food-on. I could go on and on about what we loved. From Sarah our server. Her information on the menu items was outstanding. To the great Happy Hour specials. How many places can you go and get quality sushi / seafood for two for under $35.00?
If you are cruising down Bardstown Rd and you're in the mood for some delicious food..... Wait a second. I almost forgot to tell ya how good the Mahi Mahi Tacos were. What was I thinking.
Like I was saying, if you are cruising down Bardstown Rd and you're in the mood for some delicious food and you don't stop in. Shame on you.
I am a customer for life now, and you will be too. GRUB-ON!
After checking out Cherokee Park, we decided to stop for a small bite. I am a sucker for catchy names, and Dragon King's Daughter got me.
We ordered Tuna Tataki, Ginger Chicken and That's a Jillian(sushi rolls).
I have always loved seared tuna and it really pains me to say that it can be rather boring if not done right. The tuna itself had no flavor and each thin slice was seared almost halfway through, which I think it's overcooked for Tuna Tataki. The avocado-wasabi dip was the best thing on the plate, though with only a slight hint of wasabi it's not much different from guacamole. If only we had some real chips to hold it instead of the tiny fried garlic chips.
Ginger Chicken was, well, gingery but dry, as sautéed chicken breast tends to be.
My eyes widened as soon as I saw the Jillian Rolls. Who would have thought soy wrappers could be pink in color?! Those humble soybeans must have gone through some extreme makeover. Taste wise, I love pesto so pine nuts and basil in these rolls can't go wrong.
Word on the street is that trendy establishments with "Asian Fusion" theme are often hotbeds of mediocre food, and I have yet to prove that wrong.
I like this place more and more each time I go.
I *LOVE* their house salad. They have the best ginger dressing I've ever had. Delicious. And I hardly ever order house salads...always want to leave room for the real food I'm going to eat later.
Today I tried something other than the sushi for the first time. And it did not disappoint. I had the tilapia tempura tacos, with added cabbage and red onions. The sauce that came on it was quite yummy. I'll have to continue stepping out of my usual comfort zone and try more of their fusion stuff!
My husband and I were visiting Louisville for the weekend and he was in the mood for sushi. We arrived on a night in which they were shorthanded on the floor, so while we were seated right away, we had to wait awhile for table service.
My husband, of course, got sushi and I got the tempura shrimp tacos. Â Everything was very good. Â They even had a good selection of locally-brewed beers and even Schlafly's (STL) summer ale!
My only complaint was the service, and that really couldn't be helped. There were only two servers and one hostess for the whole house.
The food here is really perfect and every bit as good as Maido. Â The service, however, is really lacking. Â The last two times I've been, I've received spotty, even rude service. Â They charged me for an item that I ordered, but which was never delivered to the table. Â The server, when I dared mention the slight, then suggested that I simply take my soup home with me - and never offered to take it off of the tab! Â No apology. Â No mention of the fact that it should have been served at the start of the meal, rather than in a to go bag. Â
I say that the food is not worth it. Â I'll drive to Maido in Crescent Hill, eat the same food, and receive much nicer and more capable service.
This is my favorite place in town. I've been eating here since pretty soon after they opened. I like to put my laundry in across the street and get a beer and some sushi while it washes. I've been doing this pretty routinely since then and I'm still not tired of the menu. Everything I've ever had has been delicious.
If I'm around for happy hour, the Italian Picnic and the Frosty Sunbeam are favorites. I prefer the picnic when I'm craving something salty and the sunbeam when I'd prefer something sweeter. If I miss happy hour and I'm able to spend a little more, the chupacarla is my preference. Their miso soup is the best I've ever had and the beer selection is good. If you've never had a ginger shake, give one a try for dessert. Also, make sure to go to the women's restroom. It's pretty fancy.
I visited Dragon King's Daughter some time in early '11 and I wasn't impressed with the sushi rolls I got. I'm not sure if it was the hunger talking, but my experience a few days ago was damn good! My friend and I went during their happy hour 3-6pm, we got the wasabi salsa as an appetizer which was interesting. Fried wontons as tortillas with the salsa was delicious. (A word to the wise, stir it up before diving in, we both got a mouthful of wasabi at times. I got the Dragon King's Daughter ($10) and The Indulgent ($4) and they were equally delicious. I'll be back...!
Review Source:"A blossom suffering in the rain,
The princess longed for home in vain.
A great pain to see her in plight,
A great joy to do something right.
Now we enjoy, yet soon will part,
For my own home I must start.
Bitter longing has come to my heart!"
That's an excerpt from the Chinese fairy tale, the Dragon King's Daughter. I was intrigued, so I had to Google it. The back story behind most things means a lot to me and I suppose the former journalism major drives me to always do the research. If you're interested in more, click here: http://traditions.cultur….
However, I found the tale more interesting than the restaurant. While the atmosphere is open, if somewhat too open as conversations tend to drift from table to table, and it has that Bardstown Rd vibe, I found the food and service to be uninspired.
It was a fairly late dinner with an esteemed adventurer and both of us had an itch to try DKD. We were both amused and intrigued by the menu, with rolls like Sushi and the Banshees and The Kraken Attacks but we went with the house roll, the Dragon King's Daughter, and the Citrus Heat. Both were unimpressive. The Citrus Heat in particular was very... meh, not spicy at all, with the Japanese mayo more reminiscent of Hellman's straight from the squeeze bottle and the slice of lime far too overpowering. Also, I would recommend finding a less briny soy sauce, as the one available is far too salty. Trust me, I know my soy sauces. ;)
I wouldn't be averse to coming back and trying other items on the menu, but I will always be a little wary as it reads better than what was experienced.
I just love this place. Â I'm vegetarian and I feel like the menu is as exciting for me as everybody else. Â We don't seem like an afterthought. Â I'm always able to get something different and there's always a new flavor surprise. Â
The Pizza's were awesome but they're gone now, so sad. Â They were one of the more unique and satisfying Asian fusion dishes I've ever experienced.
The sushi is fantastic as well. Â I never feel like I'm getting the short end of the stick or given a token tempura roll. Â I'm used to Sushi on the west coast so my bar is pretty high.
The only negative is the desserts. Â I had some fried Oreo roll thing that was way better as an idea. Â It basically tasted like cream cheese and whipped cream. Â Kinda weird. Â I got that because the others never sound very interesting. Â
They have some great beers and the list is always changing.
Awesome. I went while visiting my family over the holidays, and patronized the place with my hubs and his college BFF. Â So imagine my dismay when the day after this glorious lunch I end up at some Chinese resto and learn that they wanted to go to DKD ... but axed the plan when they knew I went the day before! MISTAKE. I would have gone twice in one day.
For travellers to the Louisville area, if you're on Yelp, hopefully you're looking for interesting local character. Maybe you're looking for somewhere vegan/vegetarian friendly. Maybe something that will appeal to many (since it has sushi, but you can easily have something totally different).
DKD is a unique experience. We tried the dumplings, two orders of sushi, and local friend ordered the tacos (which looked awesome!). I love a place that has a menu you can tour around, that is, not get pigeon-holed in the same section every time. DKD has great variety and great flavor. To boot, also a great beer selection and good sake. You will probably be served by one of Louisville's common hipsters, but that's fine. They're nice and have cute glasses.
What really makes Dragon King's Daughter shine is the large variety of vegetarian options, specifically sushi. Â I am not a vegetarian, but can appreciate vegetarian cuisine, and the meat-less sushi options at DKD are not only creative, but delicious as well.
The appetizer selection is also incredible, including the scrumptious wasabi salsa with friend wonton chips.
I have had service issues in the past, but as of recent, have no complaints.
Casual atmosphere, great finger food ( perhaps not the best place if you are really hungry) Â , but whatever they serve gets the thumbs-up. Â Keep it up out there. I am just thrilled that there's something REAL out there to take the place of the crappy KARMA cafe . No seriously, we Louisvillians had to have better KARMA to deserve
something better than it's name sake :).
My favorites in no particular order :
(i) The Oyster mushroom+spinach quesidilla,
(ii) Â The Mediterranean Yaki Onigiri
(iii) The MAD MAX Â &
(iv) The Mantis roll
Maan, I'm gettin' hungry here !
I came for the Asian Infusion and Happy Hour, I keep coming back for the taste and atmosphere. Dragon King Daughters (DKD), is one of many small restaurants that keep Louisville weird. The cuts of fish used are a very good grade and this restaurant actually has a lot of original rolls.
In addition to a great selection of beer and sake, DKD has $10 bottles of white and red for their happy hour. Late night Happy Hour starts at 10pm, I tend to see a movie or show and then stop in, and ends at 12am when the restaurant closes. DKD has a lunch happy hour too, but I am not certain the hours. Happy Hour last all week, just in case you are hungry for Asian around 11 on Tuesday.
I personally love the Tuna Tataki flatbed with roasted garlic flakes and the Frost Sunbeam Roll with flavorful mango.
Why DKD? Well, because it is the only place to fill up on sushi, get $10 bottles of wine before close, then walk across the street to Akikos Karaoke and sing your drunk Sushi heart out!
I had been lured by the promise of an incredible appetizer called "Sushi Poppers". When described it was intriguing... Sushi Rice and cheese, breaded & deep fried, served with a special dipping sauce. I am not a huge fan of fried foods but my daughter insisted this was a must have to tantalize our taste buds before deliciousness in the main courses.
So the day I was leaving to come back home, we stopped by on the way to the airport. We were the first ones as they opened, but its obvious the restaurant is popular because by the time we ordered our beverages, three more tables filled up. But considering the place wasn't full our service was great.
The menu is definitely interesting, offering flat-breads and tacos with an Asian twist. I got the Asian Barbecue Beef tacos, my daughter and sister the shrimp tacos and my brother-in-law the Tuna tataki flat-bread.
Once the poppers came, I was still a bit skeptical about that combo, but once I tried one I realized why my daughter loved it so much. They were crunchy and delicious on the outside, gooey and tasty on the inside. The dipping sauce was divine. I was now really looking forward to the meal.
I can't lie, it was all really, really, really good. The combinations were fantastic and luckily everyone was willing to share their food with me. Portions were pretty big, so we all had more than enough to really enjoy it all.
Strangely I had noticed that the ladies that went to the bathrooms took a very long time coming out. When i mentioned this the other girls at the table explained that the owner had installed some pretty swanky toilets from Japan. I kid you not. There are controls on these things, and I will not go into detail but lets just say that you come out pretty dang clean. A touch of Japan that was pretty tongue in cheek and very funny.
I had heard that this place was the sister restaurant to Maido, but better, so I decided to check it out with a friend.
The sushi pizza reminded me of a bad episode of Kitchen Nightmares, but it seemed to fare better here than on that show.
I thought the rolls and execution were better than that at Maido, but the space was not as awesome (considering it wasn't outdoors). Not that it's a particularly bad thing when it's hot out and you're ordering raw fish.
I'm not particularly compelled to return, but I'm not opposed to it, either.
My expectations may have been too high going in. Â I thought Dragon King's Daughter was good but not great.
I had the seaweed salad and the Camille Orange Peel roll. Â Both were tasty, but nothing exceptional.
The servers were friendly, but couldn't quite keep track of who had our table. Â This was partially good because we got a lot more water this way (the bottle of chilled water and small tumblers made for a nice presentation, but I drink a lot of water. Â I kind of wanted a bigger cup. Â And about two more bottles). Â It was less good in the sense that they forgot my friend's soup and brought out our starters with our sushi.
They do get points for their beer selection, though.
I've been back 4 more times in the week since I wrote this review, and I'm sufficiently impressed to keep the star rating where it is, and say, that at least in my experiences, there have been improvements in the service. Your experience may differ.
The wine selection is quite nice and there's a good selection of sake, too.
There are more hits than misses here, and half the fun is trying something that looks unusual and discovering you like it a lot.
