I've eaten at many small diners and the like with my husband. I have to be honest here and say that I thoroughly enjoyed my food at the Egg Head Diner. The seating is somewhat antiquated though in good condition and the walls could use a little more color, but I very much liked the local artist decor along their walls...kinda like what some Starbucks locations do to advertise local business. I went to Brunch with my husband and 2 of our friends. We weren't too sure what to expect, but we were greeted by a friendly elderly woman who promptly seated us. Our waiter was friendly and quickly got us some waters while we looked at our menus. I was surprised that the menu offered fair trade coffee, gluten-free options, vegetarian options, etc. It was a good surprise and I am sure some diners will appreciate those options; I don't usually see them offered in many small diners. We asked our waiter some questions regarding the menu and he was knowledgeable enough to answer our questions. One of my pet peeves is going to restaurants or diners where the staff is not familiar with their menus.
But I digress, we each ordered something different so that we could share and try multiple items on the menu. Here is what we ordered: Stuffed Berry Crepes with marscapone, a short stack, the Hangover Chilaquiles, the Rapine Bruschetta Frita, a side of French Toast, and a I can't remember the name but it was a pork lovers plate, a Strawberry milkshake, 2 coffees, a coke, 4 tropical fruit smoothies--very good, and an orange juice --freshly made. I have to say that the presentation was good and the food was absolutely delicious! I enjoyed the music in the background and was often singing along to the amusement (embarrassment?) of my companions lol. We even had the manager Horacio stop at our table and see how our food was which I appreciated.
Now here's why I gave it 5 stars: Fast service from receiving our meal order to us receiving our actual meal, good customer service--the staff was very friendly and attentive to our refill needs, great food, good price, and an overall good vibe. Take your family, take your friends, or go by yourself and give it a try! I highly recommend that you visit the Egg Head Diner.
I've been driving by this place for a little while now and today finally decided to check it out. Â I am glad I did. Â It is your typical diner atmosphere, but they had local art on the wall, which I thought was great! Â
The pros:The waitstaff was very polite and attentive. Â The food was delicious and looked great on the plate. I had the breakfast burrito which had chicken, cheese, egg, avocado, onion and tomato with a side of breakfast potatoes. Â My girlfriend had the egg white omelet. Â Again really impressed with the way the food looked and tasted. Â The food isn't overly priced and the portions were just right.
The cons: No parking. Â We were going to park in the Lincoln Lodge parking lot, but apparently they will tow you so we had to pay to park on the street. Â The menu looks a little confusing in the way that it reads.
All in all it was great food, great service and not too expensive. Â I'm glad they are in the neighborhood.
We were so happy to see a new neighborhood breakfast place walkable from our house, and tried it almost the day it opened! Â It turned out to be a great addition to the neighborhood! Â The food is great, service friendly and prices very reasonable. Â It is also VERY kid friendly! Â I had the chilaquiles, which were excellent. Â my kids had the mickey mouse pancakes(they made them minnie mouse since I have girls) and my husband had the reuben, which was also HUGE and delicious he said. On another occasion we had other meals and they too were all excellent! Â We will definitely be back often.
Review Source:It is with some reservation that I write this review, as they are just getting started.
We started out by asking the waiter what was good. He said 'everything here is good'. He explained how they make all of their own sauces, and a few other positive points about the restaurant. Although an enthusiastic support of the eatery can be positive, we would have appreciated some guidance and suggestions even more.
I ordered the eggs benedict geared for vegetarians. It was nice to see this option. The English muffin was a bit hard to cut. The side of potatoes had no flavor at all. Otherwise, the presentation was very nice.
My wife was disappointed to find broccoli on her hash. She is a super taster (highly sensitive to bitter), and had to remove the veg from her dish. She did mention to the staff that it was not stated on the menu, or she would have asked not to receive it. The mustard sauce that was served on the side, by request, also seemed to have no flavor at all. I am not sure how this is possible, but it was just a yellow colored spread with less flavor than mayonnaise.
My wife then decided to try the cherry pie. It is made locally, which is a plus. Unfortunately, it was served cold; not room temperature or heated, but actually cold. Nonetheless, the pie was quite tasty, but in the future, we would ask to have it warmed up.
On the plus side, the coffee was better than average. We would hope in the future, that soy milk or better yet, almond milk might be available to mingle with it.
Also, the staff is warm, friendly and attentive.
In the future, I might try the pancakes, as they have several offerings in that arena, as well as quantity choices.
For now, my wife and I will spend our money elsewhere, and hope that some improvements occur before our next visit.
It is nice that a new breakfast place has opened where alps east once was.  I believe it is a family run business.I was here for breakfast this morning and everything my husband and I had was delicious.  Big fluffy omelet that they let me customize with ham and cheese. You get a choice of toast or pancakes with the omelet.  I choose the buttermilk pancakes and they  were good. My husband had the biscuits and gravy, a house speciality and it was a large portion for the cost.  We both had the home fries and they were nicely browned and seasoned well. Â
Everyone at the restaurant was so friendly and service was prompt.
I hope everyone in the neighborhood tries out or new breakfast joint.
As a fan of Broadway Cellars and Irving & Southport, I received an email about the soft-opening of Danny's Egg Head Diner. Â The restaurant is hidden in a discrete building among several shops on Irving Park, at the cluster of an intersection, Damen/Lincoln Intersection. Â You walk into the diner and simply think "classic diner" with wooden booths with blue vinyl covering, all the works on tables (salt, pepper, ketchup, creamers, sugar, hot sauce), and paper placemats. Â The middle of the diner is all booth-like seating for those waiting for a table, while there are tables and booths of various sizes on the right and left.
Since this was an opening, I reminded myself that mistakes would be made and some chaos may pursue. Â They were sampling out various menu items with majority available since they were waiting for a final delivery. Â The menu had so many options I couldn't make a decision: Eggs, omelets, hash, benedicts, pancakes, crepes, french toast, breakfast sandwiches, granola, chilaquilles, enchiladas, salads, and sandwiches and burgers!! Â They're specialties are house-cured gravlax, Danny's potatoes and their smoothies. Â They also had kids options. Â You'd think it were owned by Greeks with all those food choices!
I went with a greek yogurt and fruit granola parfait for a starter which was in a really tall glass with super fresh fruit. Â As my entree, I moved on to the Stuffed Berry Crepes. Â They were very delicious without being too sweet. Â However, the filling cream wasn't too tasty after the hot crepes dried it up. Â I would order it again and cleared my plate. Â They supposedly have delicious pie with a rotating selection, but I was so full I couldn't possibly think of dessert. Â I will probably come back once they officially open.
