What a pleasure! The food was excellent, the service friendly, not phony, there when wanted, absent when not. Quiet for conversation, but not dead.
Started with baby clams in garlic/cilantro... To die for! Â Mushrooms in garlic sauce, very good.
Then, Chilean Sea bass...just Great! Â Salmon in orange sauce, wonderful. Â Pork cubes in clam broth, very nice, not great.
Sangria...wonderful.
Dessert. A whipped cream with cookie, out of this world! Â Chocolate mousse, very nice, not great.
To sum it up, one of the best dining experiences we have had in a long, long time. Â Not cheap, but so, so worth it.
Europa is usually one of my favorite last stops before going home or to a diner after a night of getting Beered and Jacked. Â They are open until 3am, a lot of bars I go to close at 2am. Â So we can safely get an extra hour of hanging out here. Â
During the dinner hours, they serve a variety of OK Portugese dishes. Â I have personally tried the mussels and garlic chicken. Â Not my favorite pollo but it feeds me. Â The prices on their entrees are a little on the high side for just aight food. Â So I try not to eat here unless I have to. Â
I love Sangria. Â And when I want good Sangria I come to Europa. Â My girlies and I look to Sangria on nights we want to kick back and get a little loose without getting bombed. Â Eurpoa is located withing walking distance from my home which is another reason why I go. Â Would I have my dirty 30 party here? Â NO. Â Would I bring a few friends after having dinner at my home for a couple pitchers of Sangria? Â For sure!
We have probably eaten at this restaurant at least 20 times, usually about twice a month. We have never had a bad experience here. The food and service has always been excellent. The prices are VERY reasonable. I think the most expensive thing on the menu is the filet Mignon for $26 but it is WELL worth it. It is a HUGE filet and is the best filet I have ever eaten in my life. Better than Bobby Flay or anywhere like that.
There are also TONS of cheap options.. I recently had a chicken dish that was $13.95, which was a HUGE Portion and excellent. The garlic shrimp, fried calamari, sirloin steak, london broil, chicken dishes, they are all DELICIOUS. Show me where else I can get something that good for that cheap and I'll go there in a heartbeat.
The Sangria is amazing..soooo good, recently learned their secret to it.. Sunny Delight instead of orange juice! We really enjoy Portuguese food and this is by FAR our favorite place to eat it. And we've been to all of the usual places in Iron Bound Newark, none of them compare to Europa. THOSE places are overpriced and not nearly as good on food OR service. Oh, and did I mention they give you free shots of Almond liquor as an after dinner drink? YES FREE. And delicious!
The service is impeccable. You are never left waiting for anything - your glass is always filled as soon as you put it down. The best part is they are on http://restaurant.com so you can buy a $25 gift cert on there with a promo code for $2 usually, and you will get $25 off your check, which can be used on the weekends too! It is an amazing deal and well worth it. We have taken many family members and friends there with us and EVERYBODY has been amazed with this place. Â No other restaurant in this area even comes close to how good this place is, including Valencia, etc.
I HIGHLY recommend Europa, you will NOT be disappointed.
So to those saying this place is overpriced, you don't know what you are talking about. I do agree the appetizers are a little high priced, but the dinners are NOT overpriced in any way, especially not for such good Portuguese food and HUGE portions. We always end up taking food home and have enough for a whole second meal, plus more. Plus with the http://restaurant.com gift certificate you really can't go wrong. You might get cheaper prices at the Hot Spot (never been there) but you could get cheaper food at McDonald's too, doesn't mean it even comes close to how good the food is here, and what value you are getting.
I came here with my boyfriend on a Thursday night around 7. Â As a previous review mentioned, the inside is much nicer/more formal than the outside of the restaurant depicts. Â There's a parking lot right next door that is reserved for the beauty salon, but the next building down has parking for Europa. Â There was no one else at the restaurant, so naturally the waiter was able to be very attentive, constantly refilling our water, etc. Â We were given bread and salad before our meal. Â We both ordered grilled skirt steak (on special for 16.95), which was very delicious and juicy. Â I barely had to move my knife to cut it. Â The steaks came with mashed potatoes (which tasted like instant), broccoli, fried potato chips, and yellow rice. Â It was a lot of tasty food with plenty left over. Â I would go back with some friends and try out some of their appetizers and sangria.
Review Source:as my previous review stated i wanted to come back on a fri/sat nite to better gage the service--went on a friday nite arrived a bit before 6 there were several single tables & 2 parties of 10 but we were seated in the 3rd room(which had a table of 25-30 but they didnt start arrving until we were having dessert) so we were alone again the majority of time--however, the service was very good, we ordered the same entrees & one different appy garlic shrimp with thin strips of spanish sausage--excellent as the shrimp was fresh--sauce just right & the sausage strong but not too spicy tasting--it was good enough to dunk a roll in
different desserts flan which was smooth & not sugary & i got choc layer cake medium strength cappuccinos good again
for a togo i got cubed beef/pork/potatoes--when i brought it home there wasn't much of a sauce more like a juice but the meats were pretty good, potatoes ok but it also included shrimp which the server didnt mention--for me that was fine but for something with allergies it would have been disappointing
it was about $18 but it was in a lasagna pan which wound up being 3 full-sized meals plus a full plate's worth of saffron
so it gets the same deserved 5 star rating ---next time i will try to come on a sat nite
My first review was flagged by the owners of this restaurant, simply because they are embarrassed by how true it was. Â So, let's try again. Â As some others have stated, their prices are outragious!! Â An appetizer will cost you at least $11 with average entree prices costing between $15 - $25 EACH. Â You can get the SAME type of food for HALF this price at nearby Hot Spot in Roselle Park. Â I do NOT recommend Europa unless you want to waste your money. Â I did not order any drinks here, so I cannot comment on that aspect, but I'm sure they're outragiously priced too.
Review Source:I went to Europa for the first time last week-end hoping to try their infamous sangria and try a new place. Â As soon as you walk in the door, it's like a 180 from what the outside of the restaurant looks like. It is very elegant. This is the only reason why it received a 3 star rating instead of just 2.
The prices are outrageous for the area that the restaurant is located in. The cheapest thing on the menu is a salad and that's $10+ The entrees range from $15+
Needless to say, Â we never tried to sangria. :( If the economy didn't affect you as it did us, this place is for you. If you are looking for a place that has great food at cheaper prices, look elsewhere (i.e. The Sunrise Diner or The Hot Spot on Westfield Ave. in Roselle Park)
We were feeling a bit hungry after picking up a friend from Newark Airport, so the Portuguese friend in the group suggested that we come here for dinner.
There's a bar in the back and flat panel TVs all around the establishment showing - what else - the YES network! Score. A few parties had just finished their dessert and were about to leave - they looked real satisfied. We eagerly followed the host to our seats and quickly ran through the menu.
After a round of Sagres Bohemia, excellent beer with frosted glasses for the dinner table touch, we ordered Baby Clams, which was an excellent dish. Light yet buttery and garlicky. The bread went very well with the left over sauce.
We also ordered the baked chicken with prosciutto and cheese. The prosciutto was thick-cut, which gave the flavor an extra boost.
Apparently, everything in Portuguese restaurants comes with rice and fries. We opted for the Spanish fries, which were basically thin-sliced chips. Very fresh and crispy.
Staff was very friendly, this seemed like a spot with a lot of regular clientele. I'll be back if I'm ever in town again!
