I really wanted to love this place, but it did not want my love. Hopefully I just caught them on a bad night, but the staff were rude and simply ignored the bar. It seemed like a small fight to get any service which ruined the experience for me. The beer was good, so they would get a second chance
Review Source:Brisket brisket brisket...I actually came in for the crab canneloni, ( as seen on DDD with Guy Fieri) boyfriend got the brisket. We had the fried razor clams and clam chowder for appetizers and Leavenworth premium lager to drink. Â There is a good variety of beer to choose from. Â I forgot how chewy razor clams can be and the clam chowder was average. ( I prefer chowder with ham or bacon in it-this had neither) Â the crab canneloni is packed with crab and shrimp, which is good, but the roasted red pepper sauce on top should be canned/bottled and sold- I could have eaten just a bowl of that sauce alone. Â A very pleasant surprise was the brisket with mashed potatoes, gravy and corn with some red peppers? mixed in. Â The brisket was fork flakey tender and spicy, the corn/ pepper mix was fresh, sweet and tastey. Â Would stop off again for the brisket without question. Â Friendly staff, bar/pub, hang out friendly atmosphere.
Review Source:This is a case where you want to love it, but you just can't. Â The beer is so good that you think the food must be as well. Â This is the sort of joint that everyone always wants to meet at. Â Again - the beer is good! Â But then folks want to order food. Â I have done this many times - and have given it many tries. Â From burgers to nachos to salads....it just isn't that good.
The problem tends to be the lack of flavor. Â It is as if the owners built a damn good beer and thought, "hey, we need a restaurant to go along with the hops." Â That would make sense, however, they should have thought out the plan a little further. Â Let's start by developing a good menu. Â No - they should have started out with a chef who knows how to develop taste in the menu items (menu is fine - in fact, the food tastes like you are eating the plastic menus). Â
It's not as if the food is disgusting. Â It is just bland and reminds one of eating at Appleby's or IHOP. Â Okay - that was a slam. Â But really folks - you have damn good beer. Â Spend some time and develop tasty food. Â Don't serve food as an afterthought - just because you think you have too. Â It insults the food.
Keep eating local (or in this case, drink local)
Delicious food and great beer. Â We ate there today with our daughter and son-in-law. Â We had oyster po-boy, falafel sandwich, fish and chips, and vegan wrap with garlic fries. Â Oh my gosh, everything was so good. Â The only thing that was the exception was the cole slaw... it didn't have any flavor. Â Everything else was incredible. Â The beer was very good. Â I had the pear cider but I realized I should have ordered a beer because it was too sweet for me. Â We will definitely be back.
Review Source:the service is absolutely terrible. we waited SO long to get our food - we actually watched it just sit in the back for at least 15 minutes. when it was brought to us, the nachos were half the size they usually are. the food is great and is what brings me back each time, but I've finally had enough of the wait staff that I don't think I'll be coming back.
Review Source:We LOVE Diners, Drive In's, and Dives. Â We seem to move close to where Guy is - When we moved to Clarkston, MI, he had just been at Union Woodshop in Clarkston. Â When we moved to Puyallup, WA, he had just been at a place in Tacoma. Â So we saw this and obviously HAD to go there. Â :)
We were impressed!
My boyfriend got a clam (?) Po'Boy with garlic fries and I got fish (salmon) and chips (onion rings). Â Both were PHENOMENAL. Â The ONLY suggestion we have for the garlic fries is to not put PURE garlic into it - We love our garlic and it could even get strong for us. Â We recommend putting the garlic in a pan on the stove for a while before putting it on the fries.
The boyfriend also got a couple of the beers and was pretty impressed with those as well - We were pretty sad they didn't have the Blackberry Apple Cider. Â It sounded good but was not available.
We did split dessert (Crème Brulee) but we weren't that impressed with it - It had a weird consistency and not really smooth.
Overall, we were really happy with the place and will definitely go back sometime!
As someone who watches the Triple D's OFTEN, I was surprised that I missed this place. I went with two other people and we all enjoyed it very much. It was very bitter to me that I cannot have raw oyster in seattle (pregnant) :(, so my bestest alternative was Fish Tale's fried Oysters!! I like RAW oysters, so I almost am never impressed with fried ones, but these were actually really good!! the breading was VERY light, and Oysters were so fresh. I ended up ordering the Oyster po-boy of some sort, and ate the sandwich piece by piece. even on a sandwich, the portion of oyster was very impressive... only leaves me to wonder how many more oysters I would've gotten if I just got the fried oyster basket.
my two other guys had ham and brie sandwich, and fish and chips. both looked very good and their fries were delicious. their price isn't so bad either.
our waitress was very accommodating, sweet, and welcoming. One negative food point was that their cole slaw was BAD. It was fresh, but as bland as could be!! maybe we got the bad batch, but I can't imagine this place serving cole slaw of this quality with their other awesome menu items! needed more acid and def. more salt!
overall, good place to go with family or friends, lots of beer choices too!
I was less than impressed. Â I guess that phrase epitomizes our experience at Fish Tale. Â After seeing it featured on Diners, Drive-ins & Dives and seeing (and tipping a few) their beers for years on local store shelves, Fish Tale was my choice for our Father's Day celebration (which we had Saturday night). Â It was a busy night but definitely not packed as there were sections of the restaurant that weren't even open so we were able to find a table right away. Â Our waitress appeared and took our drink order and after touting a Wheat Wine, my son chose that, asking for a pint only to be informed that because it was 10% it was only sold in "schooners" at $6.00 per (would have been good info to share in the initial pitch), he ordered that anyway and I ordered an Organic Amber Ale on draft. Â We ordered our food right away, I ordering an Oyster Po' Boy, my wife the Fish and Chips with a salad replacing the fries and my son ordered Chicken Nachos. Â That was the last time we saw our server except for one brief stop she made to see how our food was. Â The Nachos were a huge portion piled high with chicken, olives and jalapenos (actually too many jalapeno slices which ended up on the salsa plate). Â The chicken however was flavorful and the portion large enough for half of it to make it into a box for a later snack) Â My wife complimented the Fish and Chips but thought the serving a bit small at three medium pieces for the $11.25 tariff. Â My Po' Boy was served on a Ciabatta Roll with mixed greens and hand cut fries and while large was mostly roll. Â A softer more traditional roll would have been more authentic and less bready and overall the flavor of the oysters were overpowered by the greens and the bread and I left a chunk of sandwich on the plate. Â The manager stopped by our table and asked how things were and I told him we hadn't seen our server since the food was delivered which resulted in our table being bussed promptly and the servers eventual appearance with the dessert menu (from which I ordered the Porter Dark Chocolate Cheesecake to go and it was yummy when consumed later, but regrettably didn't seem to be fresh). Â Amazingly for a pub, we were never offered the opportunity to order a second round (for which I was primed and therefore disappointed) and we all left somewhat underwhelmed. Â Our sentiments on the way home were that "we had been there and done that" and didn't feel the need to go back. Â After all the Triple D hype and my years of anticipation I think you can see why we were less than impressed. Â Needless to say we won't be going back, Olympia has too many other good places to eat....
Review Source:Good Beer, Good Food, Good Service.  Their house-made beers are well made, high-quality, and well-rounded -- nothing that will knock your socks off, but definitely worth having few.  The food is well done, made promptly, and served by  a courteous staff.  Not divey, maybe a bit too nice, but a nice place to drink beer and eat a well matched dinner,
Review Source:The crab cannelloni was a great seafood pasta entree, but the ceasar salad beside it was totally boring. Â Would I get it again? Â No.
The hummus didn't seem fresh and was surrounded by fresh, but uninspired veggies like carrot sticks, broccoli, cauliflower and celery.
Still the beer was delicious, and it's a fun place to hang out. Â Despite the hit-or-miss entrees, I'll come back again.
I read several mixed reviews on various social media sites before deciding to visit this place. I had arrived in town late, and wanted to find a local place that offered late night dining. In the end, my visit turned out to be a positive experience. I expected the place to be packed on a Saturday night; although there was a decent crowd of patrons, there were several available seats at the bar as well as a few empty tables of various sizes to camp out for a meal and drinks. There was no hostess stand or sign at the door, but thankfully a waitress passing by the entrance smiled and invited me to sit anywhere I pleased.
It was a few minutes before a man stopped by my table with a drink and food menu and let me know my waitress would be with me shortly. My waitress was friendly and helpful. I ordered a beer sampler which included four small glasses (juice sized) filled with my choice of organic beer. I told the waitress I was leaning toward the lighter wheat, amber and pale ales, so she helped me pick out four options including some IPAs from the menu. She also convinced me to try the fish and chips made with salmon instead of cod. It was surprisingly delicious. I loved cutting into the batter and seeing the beautiful pink salmon peaking through. The taste didn't disappoint, and the beers were a wonderful complement for washing it all down.
My waitress stopped by my table during my meal to let me know her shift was over and that another waitress would be taking over. I gave her her tip and closed out the tab shortly afterwards with the other waitress. The establishment didn't mind that I stayed and surfed the web using their free WiFi after clearing my table.
I would definitely return here, especially to try out their beer pancakes for breakfast.
I Love The Fish Tale's beer-the food is mediocre. I used to love coming down for happy hour. The prices are great and the atmosphere was really relaxed. Since they were featured on television it's been hit or miss. Impossible to find a place to sit and good luck getting anyone to acknowledge you. I wish they would've foreseen the increased business and staffed accordingly. A greeter/host position would be nice. I look forward to the hype dying down a bit and I will certainly be back for more delicious brews!
Review Source:Nice pub with really great organic beer.  Their organic pale ale and  amber ale are our favorites.  We stopped in for lunch and had their salmon and chips.  Salmon was obviously very fresh.  Service was very prompt and friendly.  Their pear and dark apple cider were very good, the waitress was kind enough to bring samples. and we took 2 six packs home with us.
Review Source:Amazing food and amazing service! Decided to check out this place on a Thursday night, Happy Hour runs every night after 9pm which was an added bonus. I had the grilled salmon salad which was an great price for the portion size! The flavors were excellent and the quality of ingredients very apparent. Cant beat their bacon, smoked in house! My boyfriend had the burger and fries which he was equally pleased with.
The beers were great too. $3 for a 16oz local brew. My spiced apple cider was delicious!
Maureen was our server, and youd be lucky to have her! Personable and gave great recommendations, very attentive.
We will definitely be back!
Fish Tale you have redeemed yourself with a great cheap brunch! I highly recommend brunch at this BrewPub, with prices in the $5-10 range and some unique offerings like spiced apple "beer cakes" and huevos divorciados. I visited last month on a Sunday afternoon celebrating my birthday month, and was not disappointed. I tried the aforementioned beer cakes, which I believe were less than $6. They were awesome! Three huge appley pancakes with candied walnuts, creme fraiche, and syrup. I only got through one. I also tried the spire mountain cider mimosa, which was excellent. Friends ordered everything from omelets to hashes, and all were really well received. Keep in mind though you still can't bring the kiddos- 21 and over only.
Review Source:I LOVE the fact that I can find organic bar food & organic beer!! The food is pretty good, I had the fish tacos without cheese, and they were just the perfect amount of spicy!
The service, I've heard almost always takes a while..so be prepared to hang out & relax, this definitely isn't a fast food type place! The beers were great, those came really quickly & the descriptions were actually pretty accurate..this is a rare thing for me since I can't always taste the flavors listed..but with the beers I did try here, I tasted pretty much everything!
Seating is harder to find in the evening, so if you have a large group, maybe showing up earlier or later would help..it was hard enough to find seats for two people at 7pm!
I wish more places served organic bar food!!
This would be a 4-star maybe even 5 if this Fishtale was consistent with the service. We do enjoy the food here, but it's either outstanding or it's all messed up. I love the smoked salmon omelette on their brunch menu, it's served with a chipotle cream cheese that adds an delicious pizz-azz to it. The husband usually gets the Hang-Town Fry. Dinner or lunch options usually varies, Oyster Basket is a great deal, 12 plump fried oysters that are farmed locally.
But last time we went our raspberry lemonade tasted like raspberry seltzer water, onions were added to a scramble that we requested no onions on, and one of my  battered salmon filets was noticeably burnt (deep-fried twice?) and inedible. So as I said before, if this place was consistent, I would increase my rating.
Honestly, I didn't like this restaurant for a number of reasons. I'll be straightforward and brief.
1. The wait service was terrible. The waitress was frazzled and distracted, didn't make eye contact while we ordered, and got parts of our orders wrong.
2. We ordered a flight that came all out of order, and with the wrong beers. We never did figure out which one was which, and I think we had one beer on there twice. The beer wasn't that good. And we LOVE beer.
3. Fish tacos were all sold out, but we ordered the fish and chips meals...we did not enjoy the Asian spin on the fish batter. It's a brew pub...do a beer batter.
Overall, not a great experience. Not terrible, but nothing special. I wouldn't go out of my way to go back there.
One of the biggest turn-offs was that the waitress who obviously did not pay much attention to detail when it came to serving us did manage to notice that my husband didn't have his wedding ring on and asked if our order was "together or separate."
I know this is the 3rd time I've had to update my review but the manager actually contacted me and apologized (even though my frustration wasn't really with him). We had some confusion with the bill and my boyfriend and I being flustered after a long aggravating experience, but what it all comes down to: Work on the customer service, Please!! The end...
Review Source:MY GO TO.
Cider for breakfast? Yes please, Dark and Dry all the way.
So many awesome things on the menu I am always meaning to try but I am in love with their salads and greens.
I love the hummus plate to for snacking while sipping on my cider and chatting with friends.
The Nachos and Chips and Salsa are soooo fresh too! These are great starters as well.
The Lamb Burger has some GREAT seasoning and I love the gouda on it... it is definitely a great twist on a burger. The Vegan Wrap is delicious as well. I know what you are thinking, what am I doing eating a vegan wrap after I just talked about a Lamb Burger, well... the wrap is THAT good.
I am pretty sure my favorite thing on the menu is the salads. It is a toss-up between the Greek Salad and Grilled Salmon. I think for me it just depends on how hungry I am, but I ALWAYS bring some of it home and eat it the next day for lunch. Hehe, yes I am frugal... but it is still just as yummy so why not?
The only complaint is sometimes the service in the evenings. I swear it doesn't matter where we sit in the evenings but I feel like we always have the same server providing the same poor service. I really never go anywhere expecting to get 'good service' so when I do it is always a bonus. I really never mind and just ignore it but it has gotten to the point where my friends complain and even get GRUMPY! That's what bugs me about it... ha. Lunch/brunch etc is always good though and evening is never bad enough to keep me away.
I'll be there again this weekend.
***ONE LAST THING. Check them out of fbook to see specials! They update them all the time and I have def ordered them JUST because I saw them on me news feed - good stuff***
dining with the fishes
one of my favorite places to grab a pint in olympia, fish tale brewpub has got it going on. Â Their microbrews are award winning and their burgers use painted hills grass fed beef. Â yum. Â with locally sourced veggies. double yum.
i wouldn't go on a daily basis, but i'll def. go to meet up with friends and to stay away from the 4th avenue smelly crowd.
triple yay.
Went here with the hub and a couple of friends for brunch, it was swell and decently priced.
The place was hopping (weekend brunch time, hello), but our waitress still managed to get to us in a timely fashion. Based on other reviews, I should thank my lucky stars on that one.
I had one of their ciders and the huevos divorciados, everything was fresh and prepared to my liking. Big fan of the green sauce, whatever that was (salsa verde, I guess?). Everything appeared to have been made in house.
My husband had a dish that involved salmon on a biscuit, but can't recall the name and had devoured it before I had a chance to snag a photo. One friend had the seafood soup- the soup of the day, it was like a tomatoey seafoody gumbo. I had a spoonful and found it to be quite tasty.
My only complaint was the noise level, but given how packed it was and how high the ceilings are, I don't know if there's much that can be done about that.
The Fish Tail Brew Pub is like four breweries in one building. They have the Fish Tail Organic Ales, Leavenworth Biers, Reel Ales and the Spire Mountain Cider brands.
They don't always have drinks from all four brands available but it seems like they try to. You have to look at a chalkboard on the wall for what is currently on tap. The menu has everything they offer at one point and time or during different seasons or times of the year.
I settled on the Hefe from Leavenworth and it was delicious! So delicious in fact I got two of the same. The small wedge of lemon that accompanies the drink is wonderful!
The brew pub also serves food. Mostly your staple dishes that go with a pub. Their happy hour was at 9 and they had deals on some food. We got chips and salsa and the salsa was just great!
They have vegetarian options here and I got the Portabella sandwich with goat cheese and that was just wonderful! Very satisfying!
Steve got a chocolaty cheese cake which was good but I only had a few bites because it was quite rich!
Next time we want some beer in Tacoma we will come here once more! They have a good variety of menu items to eat and a fine beer list!
I don't like being a hater but everything from the service to the oyster burger was subpar. At least the beer was decent.  Ya, forgot, the blue cheese water like. If ur gonna do oyster burgers or oyster po boys  in the PNW all I'm saying is please.... Make it killer, not average or slightly less than that.
Review Source:We just recently moved to Olympia, and were told Fish Tale is a great local hangout to enjoy some local brews. Since we're from Montana, we've been spoiled in the local microbrew department, and I wasn't too impressed with the offerings at Fish Tale. The beers were...eh. I don't consider myself a beer connoisseur by any stretch of the imagination, but I know when I enjoy a beer, and when I don't. Again, these beers were just so-so. A friend of mine ordered the Amber, and was thoroughly underwhelmed.
The ciders on the other hand are nothing short of delicious. The signature "Dark and Dry" cider is complex, flavorful, and not 'too girly' for a cider. It definitely packs a punch, but is easily drinkable. Additionally, the pear cider was light enough for a refreshing and enjoyable drink.
I wouldn't frequent Fish Tale for the food. Again, it was good enough to satisfy my need to munch on something while sipping on my beer, but nothing to write home about.
My wife and I made our first visit to Fish Tale for dinner tonight. Â Unfortunately I have a horrible memory so I can't remember our waitresses name. Â She was helpful and checked on us frequently to see if we needed anything. Â
We both ordered the fish tacos and fries. Â We agreed that the tacos were some of the best we have had. Â They had a nice spicy flavor but not so much that it overpowered the rest of the ingredients. Â
My wife ordered the regular fried while I got the garlic & parmesan. Â The garlic fried were good enough that my wife kept swiping them off of my plate. Â
We had picked up some Spier apple cider at the store last week and enjoyed it so my wife tried the pear cider. Â She finished the whole pint, which she rarely does when drinking, so it must have been good. Â
I had the Wild Salmon Pale Ale and enjoyed it. Â After one imperial pint I was ready to have another but we were running short on time. Â We will be sure to visit again when in Olympia.
I've been coming here for years and the menu continues to improve and expand. Â The focus of the menu is on fresh, local and organic food. Â My favorite two appetizers are the fried razor clams or the hamma hamma oyster shooters. Â I usually get the fish and chips or the oyster burger with brie. The pub fries are good but I get the mixed greens or seafood stew (which is excellent). Â The beers are high quality and full of flavor and while won't disappoint any micro-brew fan, the Bud-Coors-Millers guys don't have many options here but this is to be expected at a brew pub.
One tip for lunchtime is that this place is very popular with state employees who get an hour for lunch 12-1, so to avoid the crowd, show up either before or after this time. Â Also, it seems that the brewery workers take their lunch break around 11am, so if you want to chat with the actual guys who brew the beers, sit at the bar at this time.
My gf and I went here for dinner with a friend. It was extremely busy and had a fun but cozy atmosphere. Ordered the dark and dry cider, it was the highlight of the evening. :) Almost molasses flavor but not too sweet. YUM. The food was eh. I ordered the soup and salad combo because I was excited to try their soup of the day, a smoked salmon clam chowder. It had tons of fresh tasting seafood but was very under-seasoned, and the smoked salmon was just kind of thrown on top. The salad was a simple caesar. Medium sized portion but again, so under-seasoned. The lemon wedge served on the side was necessary, but the taste should have been garlic, black pepper, anchovy saltiness not just lemon. :( The overall portion for the $9 soup/salad combo was silly, the tiniest little cup of soup I've ever seen. Croutons seemed homemade, at least.
Service was okay, considering how busy and understaffed they seemed. I would come back here for happy hour and maybe snack food, but the overpriced and off-par food was disappointing.
I'm really bummed out over my experience here last night. I usually love coming to the fishtail- the happy hour is awesome and although the service is rarely superb, the food and drinks are delicious! So, when my friends came into town I didn't think twice about where to take them.
The food was great, the drinks were amazing as always. The only problem was we kept getting the wrong drinks or not getting any drinks at all. No problem, we like all the drinks. But at the end of the night when our bill came there were FIVE more alcoholic beverages on the ticket than we ordered. We asked for it to be corrected twice. The first time our waitress took 2 of the drinks off, throwing the bill back ont he table and walking away without saying anything. She didn't come back so we flagged down another waitress and explained what happened (we assumed those were the drinks we kept reordering that never came). Our waitress then brought the bill back, this time with only one extra drink on the ticket, she left it on the table in the same rude fashion.
At that point, we said eh, why even try to talk to her about it again. I wrote her a note saying that the extra drink on the bill was her tip, so hopefully she finally corrected it.
Very, very frustrating evening. Next time we're dropping 100 bucks, we'll go somewhere else.
Fantastic beer, but the food and service at this brew pub doesn't quite match the quality of the brew. My wife ordered fish and chips and I got the salmon and chips. The fish was breaded in panko, but it was way over-cooked. Dry is not how I like my fish. The fries were also on the well-done side, but I kind of like very brown fries, so that was okay.
I guess maybe Olympia might be a sleepy kind of burg. It sure seemed like it at Fish Tale, anyway. The entire pub staff, and most of the patrons, appeared to be sleepwalking. The slow pace was making me want for a nap.
Like I said, the beer was fantastic. A huge variety of different styles on tap. I got several tasters and each one was better than the last. Bottomline: go for the beer--on a full stomach.
The brunch needs a separate review. Because, well...beer pancakes! I've never had non-Russian beer-based pancakes that were not made by my mother, much less beer-based pancakes made with an IPA and accompanied by candied walnuts (and a pile of sour cream, but that's nothing new to me). This is one of those dishes that you keep on eating no matter how little room, if any, you have left.
More bonus points for pretty good coffee (by non-coffee shop standards), fast service, and the capacity to seat a large group even for a weekend brunch.
