Your friendly neighborhood dive bar. Â Well, not exactly friendly, but still enjoyable. Â This bar is cash only and they only serve beer in bottles. Â There are also plenty of TVs to watch the game of your choice. Â They have two pool tables as well. Â I'm told its a Steeler's bar, but I didn't come during football season, so I can't speak to that. Â However, the real secret of this bar is the kitchen. Â Art is awesome, and he cooked me an amazing jumbalaya to order. Â I would come back just for that!
Review Source:I went here after having KBBQ with some friends for my brothers b day. We walked in and there was maybe 10 people total in the joint. Everyone looked at us like we were from a different planet. The bartender who was some old red head lady with a bunch on tattoos carded us. We were all flattered because we're all 30+ years old. She looks at my two friends first. No problem. Then next she looks at mine and my brothers. She tells us both that our id's were fake and she couldn't accept them. Now I hate to pull the race card but it's kind of a coincidence that my two white friends had no problems then the two black guys get denied. I just moved 1/2 block away and had planned on going there from time to time for a drink. Now I will never go back there again. To think its 2013 and we still have racism is crazy. Shame on you Gabes for employing people like that. It looks like your bar needs all the business it can get. I hope people read this and decide to go elsewhere no matter what race you are.
Review Source:First of all. Karaoke? Pffft, five star review right there LOL Seriously though, the cook can cook. I wasn't certain what I was looking to eat and well, Art took it upon himself to make me something tasty. It was a home cooked meal as far as I'm concerned. Hole in the wall spot, reminds me of the bar up the street from my house here in AZ. I know for a fact that the next time I'm in LA I'll visit Gabes and I'm good with that :)
Review Source:Loved it!
And yes, by all means AUBREY G. it is a Dive bar with a capital D, hehe.
The crowd was strange, but here is what you need to know:
+This is a dive bar, so be prepared
+CASH ONLY so be prepared
+This is a dive bar, so be prepared
+Art is awesome in the kitchen and does his best, so be nice!
+Lots of tvs, so great place to watch a game
+They have pool tables if that's your thing
+Parking sucks so I parked across the street in front of BofA
+No dessert like items so i went around the corner and got BOBA (lol so asian, i know, but they didnt have any food things that were sweet)
That is all. Great little spot.
Really glad to have found this place. I was looking for a sports bar to watch the Vikes beat the Packers, and I knew that SF was playing, which meant the San Francisco Saloon was not an option. Somehow tracked down Gabe's. This was a good thing. Lots of TVs showing many different games, and no drama. Beer was ... sorta cheap? $3 PBRs in a can. What can ya do? The game was the important thing.
Lots of grizzled regulars, many of whom were quite drunk, and some Packer fans who didn't mind me hollering occasionally at Ponder and Peterson. Don't go here for atmo, go for the game. Or for a beer.
Dive bar with a capital "D," but, oh so fun and totally sports oriented. Nine TV's! Â Lots of regulars and visitors, who all get along VERY well.
Cocktail drinkers.... this is your place.  Good pours; VERY fair prices.  Beer drinkers...... there is an array of beer bottles to choose from, but  there are no tappers [except for the Jagermeister! (LOL)].
Two pool tables that are always busy. Â I don't participate, but they have regular Karaoke nights, Fri. and Sat.
Bartender Amy is a sweetheart. Â She's from IL and her Midwest mindset and attitude is a plus in the L.A. jungle.
When you're in WLA and near the Santa Monica Airport, this place is a no brainer to check out if you're whistle needs wetting!
A few of us--online buddies--were going to meet for the first time in real life so we needed a place for some fun. Â I yelped and found this listing which I sent to my friend Leah. Â Coincidentally, her dad lives right across the street so it was an omen. Â After our dinner elsewhere, we headed over to Gabe's and when we walked in were warmly welcomed by the bartender which was a nice feeling. Â His name is Billy...I'm pretty sure it was since I was so tired from a weekend of drinking and staying up too late. Â We ordered our drinks, played some pool, listened to some Juke Box music (I even sang 'When A Man Loves a Woman' by Michael Bolton), and all in all, had a great time. Â My buddy lives right down the street so I will definitely be checking into this place again. Â It was laid back and to my surprise: A REALLY CLEAN bathroom.
Review Source:I used to live on the same block as Gabe's, and sadly, I wish I had gone more during the year I lived there. A great dive bar is not something every Los Angeles neighborhood has, and it was even better for myself, an LA transplant, that it supports eastern teams like the Steelers!
When my grandmother visited, she would frequently hang out there if I was busy with school work. In fact, when I moved to a new apartment with a different roommate for my second year, my grandmother's first reaction was "Oh no! How far away will you live from that bar I liked?!?" I think that about says it all.
Best bar I've ever been to! We went to Gabe's because they were a Steelers Bar and we wanted to be around a good crowd for the Super Bowl... Let me start out by saying that we were not only welcomed by the amazing staff, but they actually bought a big flat screen and set up extra seating outside just to accommodate the extra crowd of Steelers fans. Oh, and did I mention that they had a BBQ and Pot Luck free of charge for everyone!!? Not only did they have food... but they had homemade Pierogies :) yum True Steelers fans, Gabe's is the place for you!
Review Source:I'm a die-hard Steeler fan, so this place gets 5 stars from me!!! This is the place to go if you want to watch a game and feel like you're back in the 'burgh. Thank you yelp for helping me find Gabe's!
I wish there was more seating... it gets really crowded, but then again i jump around too much during games to stay seated anyway....
When I went they only had one bartender and it took awhile to get a drink. After the first drink though, he kept an eye on us and kept our glasses filled.
BLACK & GOLD!!!!!
We Love Gabes!!!!! Â Gabe is a great guy,,,,and he has a great bar! Â There is a pool table, and well priced tasty appetizers. Â It's a genuine sports bar....so plan your night out by your favorite team!
My sister and I plan our rendezvous regularly. Â It's our favorite dive bar.......... where real people get real! Â
See you there!
One of the best dive bars I've been to! Â Karaoke wed, fri, and sat nights.
Super sweet staff, loyal group of regulars, pool sharks and GREAT food!
This bar is one of those places you can go to escape the pretentious stigma of LA. Â Nobody judges and everyone is super welcoming with crazy/weird life stories to share
When I was invited to an event at Gabe's I decided to use Yelp. Â The description was so negative, I really didn't know what to try. Â In the end, I had one the of best burgers, great fries, yummy drinks (I watched how much alcohol they put in my drink), and the staff was very friendly. For those of you who are lookig for a healthy meal, this is more bar food, don't come in expecting a huge salad, the menu is good.
Review Source:If you want a bar that is very very different from the normal "LA" bar that is bougie, then totally recommend this place. Came with a friend and a group of his friends, and one of them totally sang karaoke for his new partner, which was very endearing and cute. Â A lot of the people at this place looked like they frequented this place a lot too.. a lot more older folks. Definitely not what you'd expect when you hear "LA bar."
There's a parking lot in the back, which is convenient. Seems like a good place to go to for a game or a round of pool. Also seems like a good place for great stories about the "locals" there!
I only gave it three stars though because personally I like more bougie places because I am really into ambiance of places... this bar isn't as pretty. I also don't drink as much alcohol, so I'm also more into happy hours and places with food, which this place doesn't have as much. Def more of a place where you'd pick up a beer and watch a game.
Went her for the NBA Championship Game 4 because my new place does not have Cable yet.
Got there at half time after calling BJ's and they had 39 people on the wait list.
First off, it definitely has regulars but the regulars are really nice. Usually people that call a bar home are usually pissed at any new faces but this place was relaxing to watch the game.
Beers are 3.50 which is pretty cheap by LA standards. I was really hungry and went to the kitchen area where the Awesome and Nice Chef asked me what I felt like eating. I asked what he recommended and he said "the pizza is the shit" so I took his word for it.
The pizza was surprisingly good for bar food. Pepperoni with lots of cheese!
Bartender was a really nice gentlemen. All and all it was a good experience and I'm glad I went by.
Plus B of A right across the street since it is a CASH ONLY Bar.
Definitely try it!
So months later I was out being a hypocrite...
I'd told my boss I was on a fasting from nicotine (I legitamitely had been for a few weeks subconsciously), coffee, & booze... but well Friday happened and I turned into super woman/hypocrite.
I figured after bypassing having 2/3, I might as go all the way. Â I mean otherwise it would have just been laziness right?
Friday night and of all the places... I laughed as we approached. Â I distinctly remembered the hum of the neon lights outside.
I'd nearly forgotten how horrible this place was. Â They mix the drinks poorly and there's no beers on tap, nor is there Blue Moon in bottled form to choose from.
Drinks mixed poorly: cape cods, white russians...
Well ok so a well mixed white russian in a dive bar is pushing it.
Saving grace:
Scooby Snacks
I have to admit that drink was pretty decent. Â It has whipped cream, coconut rum, midori, & pineapple juice in it.
It was kareoke night. Â It's been kareoke every time that I've been in here. Â They had basketball on tonight and a board with the standings of all of the NFL teams. Â Steelers parafanalia and old photos of players.
There's a few pool tables and...
This is a great undercover bar. Â Are you seeing someone whom your friends would give you crap about? Â Consider here because I guarantee you, they would not likely look for you here if you are under the age of 45.
Bathroom here had pictures of pinups in it... but it wasn't clean.
Gabes I really was trying tonight to give you a good shot this time. Â But as I'd expected you failed to make the mark yet again...
Wow... gotta give em 5 stars for the perfect dive. There is nothing cool about this place... which is the whole point of a dive bar, right? I don't go there to impress anyone and no one goes there to impress me... just the break I need from the LA crowds. I only suggest this to the midwest crowds since the coastal kids won't be hanging out here. This is the perfect getaway from pretentiousness... oh yeah!
Review Source:Great steelers bar....but drinks are over priced for even cheap domestics...$4 bucks?? Get Real Gabe!!
Food is ok, not good or bad.
The secret is walk to the mexican restaurant in the plaza next store...grab cheap mini-pitcher of beer, then head to gabes....
Maybe I am just biased when it comes to GOOD dive bars....especially steelers bars...not that I am comparing the bars in LA to the ones I know in Pittsburgh....
Dude... for a dive this place is AWESOME. Â Went there around 8:15 last night... the other patrons ALL new each other. They were laughing and friendly and would SCREAM OUT "Happy Holidays" as they left and all hugged good bye. It was awesome.
The juke box was great because there was a random mix of music. You could hear Christmas tunes then you'd hear country then you'd hear Warren G's REGULATE (which i love).
As for drinks, my hef was (i think) $3.25. Whenever I tipped the bartender (yes, there's one... and she totes reminds me of my small town in TN), she was SO thankful for it! Not like in a creepy people don't pay me enough way, but in an honest to God, "Thanks for coming to my bar that I love." And her boss was TOTALLY across the bar having drinks and playing some interactive touch screen game.
The entire bar was decorated for Christmas, and a dude rolled his BIKE right on in (granted, I helped him with the door...nothing but love for my fellow pedal bikers). AWESOME!
As for food, there's a printed sheet of about 4 appetizers, 6 sandwiches and 2 salads that you can order. There's also a special of the day (yesterday's was jambalaya). To order, you WALK UP TO THE KITCHEN where this awesome dude is just cooking/ hanging out and tell him what you want. You pay him there (in cash... there's an ATM in the place), and you get your food.
The veggie burger was awesome, the chicken wings were good, the chili cheese fries tasty. YUM!!!!! Also, he told me NOTHING is frozen... everything's fresh.
So, i paid for 2 hefs, a burger with fries, AND the buffalo chicken wings (which i had half of 1... eyes bigger than tum tum), and i only paid $20. 20 BUCKS!!! I shit you not!!!!!!
This place rules. I'm TOTALLY biking here next time.
Definitely a total dive. Â But not in a scummy/dirty way whatsoever. Â The local crowd seemed clean, friendly, and very welcoming - a little bit of a 'Cheers' vibe goin on at Gabe's. Â
Nothing spectacular about the place... except I have never seen such enthusiasm around karaoke in my entire life. Â Everyone was singing and dancing together... ending each bout with a standing ovation. Â Obviously, the later it got, they drunker the crowd, the worse (or better in some opinions) the performance, and the louder the ovation. Â I'm ashamed to say I was too shy to sing a little song myself. Â This definitely would have been a welcoming opportunity. Â
Beers were 3-4 bucks, pool was $.50, and there was free parking and quite a bit of nefarious partying going on in the back lot.
Dopest bar. We went randomly one night on the recommendation of a friend. It's definitely a divey feel but after going several times the bartender, bouncer, and karaoke girl know us and love us, and we've expanded our group to like 20.
Friendly staff and regulars, cheap drinks, and a good vibe make for a fun night with karaoke, billiards, and darts.
Gabes is a total effin dive. And goddamn do I LOVE it.
Im an adopted Steelers fan, and holy mothershit, this is Steelers heaven. If you can come here and not make friends as a steelers fan, you are seriously doing NOTHING right. The beer is cheap, they let you bring in whatever food you want... be it IHOP from across the street pregame, Habit at halftime, or big buffet style platters shared among all fellow Steelers fans. How can you argue with this?
If you are looking for some place to show off how much you paid for your sunglasses, or meet someone gorgeous... you are in the wrong place. You come to Gabes because its a shithole. Because its gnarly as all hell. Because you know that if you yell 'Fuck the Steelers!' on a Sunday morning, you will get beat up by 40 dudes with huge beer bellies. Because you want to see how loud a bar can get when Ben throws a 40 yarder to Hines. Because you want to meet real people.
And thats what Gabes is... Real.
So I was watching football at home and my cable went out. I needed to get somewhere quick to watch the rest of the game. This place is only a few blocks away so we went there. After you walk in it feels like you've teleported to the midwest. Very very bizarre crowd in there. I'll give it a 2 for cheap drinks...
Review Source:I agree, it's mostly regulars and older riff-raff. Sausage fest. BUT, the bartenders are cool, and the drinks are CHEAP! They also have pool and darts, which is cool. The karaoke DJ's selection is pretty good, even though he plays favorites. It's usually pretty dead here, I wouldn't recommend this be your first choice. As for watching a game here, I can't comment because I've only been here on Fri nights.
Review Source:This is the place to go on a Sunday to watch the Pittsburgh Steelers play some football. Â If you were to walk in while a game is going on you would think you walked through some sort of transcontinental portal and ended up in a the 'burgh. Â
There's no food sold here other than chips, but I've seen people bring in platters of meatballs and coolers full of subs. Â Around the corner is the Hamburger Habit which is a great place for some grub during half time. Â
There beer is cheap and cold, and the patrons are huge Steelers fans so it's a great place to watch the game. Â I've never been here at a time not during a game, so it sounds like it's a little less crowded.
If you're coming from the south, take the National Blvd ext off of I-405 and just go straight (behind the H.Habit) and there's plenty of parking.
The bar staff is really friendly, though the bartender is a Patriots fan, we don't hold that against him, except during the NE vs Pitt games.
I live walking distance to this bar and had always been curious about it, so one Saturday night my homies and I decide to finally check it out. The  door man looked us up and down and gave us a snicker.  I was the first to walk in, and everyone (all 7 of them) in the bar stared at me, I felt like I was in one of those movies where a group of people walk into a bar they don't belong in and everyone wants to kick their ass,  I've seen the endings to many of these movies so I turned around and told my team "fall back, fall back!"  I have two words for  this place -riff raff
