I WAS going to give this place a decent review because their fish and chips are to die for, but not after the experience we had last night.
A group of us had a birthday dinner here last night and were having a great time, but the customer service is shit. When we ask you for dinner rolls for a table of 8, why would you bring us 4 rolls? our glasses sat empty for far too long...were in a pub, if my glass is empty I'm expecting another beer and i would hope i don't have to beg for it.
what really ruined out night though was our server accusing us of not paying him enough money on our tab. we all stood outside the building and talked before we left and he came out to confront us that we shorted him $60 on out $185 tab. We all thew down money and counted it twice before we left to make sure it was all there AND tip. we were all pretty confused seeing that we had all just counted out the money. we  were all willing to pay the extra cash til we decided to go back in the pub and have a look just to make sure. it wasn't til we went back in that they magically found our missing $60 laying on the floor under the table. all our cash was in the middle of the table underneath our tab and weighted down when we got up and left....we all felt like we were being scammed. not sure if ill go back here again after that kinda bullshit.
When Lost Coast Brewery last minute cancelled our reservations for 12 because their oven and grill were broken we were scrambling for a place to celebrate my 30th birthday with the family. Â I saw Gallaghers was nearby and called. They were able to accommodate us with no notice and even helped with my birthday cake. The food was great (I recommend the corned beef, shepherds pie and fish and chips), the beer was great, the service was great. Â It was a loss for lost coast and a gain for Gallaghers. Â Thanks!
Review Source:For me in reviewing an Irish pub is the pint of Guinness. For reasons I do not pretend to understand the pint of Guinness can vary from the sublime to almost undrinkable. You expect an Irish pub to deliver the sublime or at least as close to it as you can get outside of Ireland. The pint here was not bad but not close to sublime. This was actually strike two. Strike one was getting someone to serve it to me. There were four other people at the bar all well provided for but the waitress was far too preoccupied giving a seminar on batting technique (seriously) to notice customers with a thirst on them. I went from waving to ahem to EXCUSE ME before I got attention. What actually worked was her friends pointing out to her that maybe we should be served. Things got better after that but the damage had been done.
Review Source:I just ate there tonight and it was terrible! As i am typing this my girlfriend is in the bathroom vomiting out the worst meal in a long time. Â They presented a plate of lettuce coated with mayonnaise, grated some cheese over it, piled some croutons on, cracked some fresh pepper and then called it a caesar salad. Â Quite gross. Â The fish and chips were overcooked and the portobello sandwich was extremely oily. Â Overall, not a pleasant meal. Â
That said, I have eaten here in the past and it has been tasty, but it is definitely hit or miss. Â Same goes for the service..
I really enjoy this establishment! The decor is classic and inviting. I have been here a few times but my boyfriend frequents the place, and we also place to-go orders. The food is fantastic. Maybe slightly overpriced but clearly doesn't stop me from returning again and again. The bartender is a nice gentlemen (he might be the owner as well but I'm not entirely sure). Overall the place has 5 stars for good food, great ambiance, superb service!
Review Source:This is an Irish pub in a cool Victorian building. Â We were there early on a Saturday evening. Â There was still good seating available and the noise level was quite acceptable for my older ears. Â My son had the Reuben which came piled high with corned beef on very tasty marbled rye bread and the best ever clam chowder. Â (He shared a taste.). I had a French dip sandwich: the meat was rich and tender and a generous amount. Â The sandwich would have been perfect had there been some horseradish to spread on it. Â Despite eating really slow, I could not get the attention of our friendly waiter in order to make the request.
Review Source:Irish puds are a blast and this was a great loud bustling joint. Great staff and attentive service. Ordered the Halibut fish and chips which came hot and delicious with a surprising large portion to boot. Live music. In my case there was a talented guitar player picking and singing folksy tunes. A beautiful tall mirrored bar with ample selection of local and imports await. Walking two block to the waterfront after diner to exercise off the calories was nice.
Review Source:Family road trip made a pit stop in Eureka on the way to Crescent City, CA. The town doesn't offer much, except for a very small and quaint downtown area that boasts some interesting history, the rest represented by the blue-collar marina and fishing industry. We drove by Gallagher's and liked its historic Victorian style and Irish flair and decided to grab lunch. The building is beautiful and actually still doubles as an inn. The bar is pretty ornate with a nice selection of beer and liquor. The dining room walls were complete with amazing paintings by a local artist (with little price tags affixed) that created a pretty neat atmosphere. The food fantastic. I ordered "The Big Bird:" turkey on toasted sourdough with Swiss cheese, lettuce, tomato & cranberry mayonnaise. It came with coleslaw which I of course dumped all over the sandwich. Washed it all down with a Great White Beer from Lost Coast Brewery, which is actually right down the road (didn't have the time to visit).
Review Source:Visited while in town with family and friends last week. Arrived around 7 pm, place was fairly busy but not packed by any means. There appeared to be one waitperson, who definitely seemed overtaxed and not able to handle the orders, given the experience I'll explain now. Party of 4, separate tabs, and we order 2 reubens, 1 regular fish and chips and 1 beer battered salmon with a salad instead of fries. Food arrives in a reasonable amount of time, if a little slow. For $16, I got 3 pieces of breaded salmon and a small salad. With tip (I always tip, even if the servers are bad, because I assume they tip out and why should the other staff suffer?), I paid $20, far more than I think that meal was worth. In addition, one of my party spilled water and then even after flagging someone down twice for napkins or help, got none. Check arrives and we wait 10 minutes to flag down the waitperson- the checks are not divided right. 10 minutes after that we got a second version of checks, also not correct. At that point we gave up and just wanted to pay, however we couldn't, because no one would take our money. Even after searching out the waitperson to let them know that we needed to go and were ready with our checks, we waited at least 10 more minutes before having them return to take our money. If you're counting, that's 30 minutes we spent at Gallagher's doing nothing but trying to leave. Value-wise I would normally give this place a 3- Â it's okay, but I definitely wouldn't make a point of coming here. Service-wise I had to take off a star because it was nonexistent.
Review Source:This place is pretty awesome in all. i went here while i was looking at Humboldt college and decided to come here when i was searching on yelp and i am pretty glad i did. the atmosphere is like any other pub but not as many dunk people. i had the ruben and that was fantastic and i was happy about that. i loved that you can play games while waiting for your food.
overall this place is a must come if you like Irish pubs and fun atmosphere
Went here with a group of 7 for dinner. Â Amazing old historical type building. Â It's a pub first and foremonst so it can get crowded and a little noisy but they put us in a ajacent dinner theater hall that was perfect. Â It was a little chilly in this large room so a light jacket or sweater would be a plus.
Wait staff was very friendly and can tell you what good on the menu. Â I had the Halibut Combo which is basicly halibut n' chips with large prawns. Â Others in my party had the salmon and everyone said their food was EXCELLENT!!
Prices were a bit high for my taste. Â Not your typical pub food prices. Â Portions were a little small too.
They had a guy playing guitar on the stage that was good and added to the ambience.
All in all a very enjoyable experience.
PS a wide selection of local brews were also available on tap.
Gallagher's is our Saturday afternoon weekly home away from home. Â We have been made to feel very welcome and the staff does everything to accomodate our every wish. Â They make the best reuben sandwich in Eureka and their fish and chips are excellent. Â The quality of the food is consistanly good and their home made soups are delicious and definitely home made. Â It is also a great place for a party of any size.
Review Source:There's just no accounting for taste sometimes! Â I've read reviews from people here that give McDonalds 5 stars...
So. Â Before you snub the only Irish place in town, take into account a couple of things. Â They're usually pretty busy, the staff is super friendly, and YES, they are family run. Â YES, the owners kids work there sometimes. Â And YES you do sit near someone else.
You're in a bar people! Â It's crowded, noisy, and fun. Â If you want anything other than that, go pay a lot more money someplace else to sit by yourself. Â Otherwise relax! Â
The food's good, the drinks are priced right, and it's locally owned. Â Cheers!
This is truly a gem in this little town. Â The owner gave us draftbeer on the house since it was busy and they were short handed. The Shepherds pie was been than grandma's traditional Shepherds pie. It was actually so good my wife only gave me a bite. Fish & Chips did not disappoint. Â The feel of the pub transported us to Ireland with a great one man band playing music. Â If you eat dinner out anywhere with in Eureka don't miss this place.
Review Source:We came here for beers and appetizers during Arts Alive. We stood around waiting for a seat until I had to approach some squirrelly young girl to ask if we just sit down. She sat us at a table and a server came by and got our drink orders and came back quickly. However, it took us 30 minutes to see her again to order... then another 40 to get our appetizer and another 20 for our bill. We missed the whole Arts Alive! I could say that it was just because it was Arts Alive, but come on, your server even brought our check to the wrong table.
Review Source:We took a limo to Gallagher's for our anniversary dinner on the 4th of July! I enjoyed clam chowder in sourdough bread bowl. It was the best! So creamy, so good that I did not feel the need to stop in San Fran to get one. Alex ordered ribs, they were gooood! I tried the coleslaw but was not impressed. I forgot what Dan ordered. I will ask, then revise.
Fast and friendly service. Made my anniversary special.
Best fish & chips in town hands down. I love this little pub. Thursdays they serve some traditional Irish dishes which don't disappoint. I've never had bad service. They do get busy so sometimes you have to be patient but that is okay. They play live music regularly and their bar is great. Lots of beer on tap and they'll make you whatever you want. I love the vibe I get when I come in here and I always leave pretty satisfied all around.
Review Source:It really chaps my hide to have to give this place a star, but it's the lowest option. Â I don't believe any of the 4 or 5 star reviews. Â I think they're employees or paid shills. Â There is no possible way anyone has gotten a decent meal in this place.
We sat down, and I found the sticky table top and dirty sidebar a bit off-putting, but I was willing to give it a try since we couldn't find anything else better downtown. Â There were six tables seated, with our waiter covering our table and one other, and the waitress covering the other four. Â It took a while for him to come over and take our drink orders, then another 10 minutes to get two pints of beer, but we weren't in any hurry and laid back service is okay by us. Â But the waiter got our beer orders wrong, so we had that to take care of.
I didn't trust the place to make anything too fancy, so I ordered the grilled sausage sandwich. Â Grill a sausage, put it on bread, fry some potatoes, how hard can it be? Â My husband ordered the fish and chips, which seemed a pretty safe order for an Irish pub.
I stepped outside to make a phone call, during which time our waiter apparently tried to deliver the wrong food. Â Twice. Â I'm not sure how this is possible with only two tables. Â We finally received our food, and it was disgusting. Â The "chips" appeared to be slow simmered in lukewarm grease (should fries be that bendable?) and the rest of it was no better. Â I tried one bite of my ultra-salty sandwich on kiln-dried bread substitute and spit it out into my napkin. Â My husband took one bite of his fish (neither of us was willing to take the plunge of trying the fries) and managed to swallow it. Â He couldn't eat his meal. Â He can eat fast food, frozen food, even MRE's, but he couldn't eat his meal here. Â I've never seen him refuse an entire meal.
We asked for the check, refused "to go" boxes, and the waiter seemed completely unconcerned that we hadn't eaten anything. Â No questions about our obvious dissatisfaction with the meal, no offer to bring anything else. Â I'm guessing they're subsidized by the "it's after 10 and Gallagher's is the only thing open" crowd and so they don't have to worry about courting repeat business.
Fish and chips were great teh first night. My BF had it with halibut and said it was too delish. The second time we went back, a little greasy. The calamari was good. The pub has live music on Thursday night.....a single chap with a guitar.....he is alright. Bring a coat, a bit chilly in there. Servers were sweet and quick.
Review Source:I really liked this place, been there twice so far, and am definitely looking forward to going back for corned-beef Thursday! Food was really good, totally fresh and authentic. Gallagher's is a really good example of how basic classics done really well can be a really good thing. Great food and really reasonable prices! The staff is fantastic and they have a good selection of beers on tap. A must try!
Review Source:If you plan to go to Gallagher's, you have to get the fish and chips and clam chowder. Then, wash it all down with a car bomb. They have great burgers as well, including a portabello burger for a vegetarian option. Irish Thursdays are pretty fun because they have a local Irish folk singer come in. I had Andrew as my server and he was very attentive and my glass was never empty! It looked like a lot of people had bad service in other reviews, so maybe ask for Andrew!
Review Source:Ok - The building is cool as well as when you walk in the door. The front room is definitely where you want to sit, the other room just totally lacks character of any kind.
I thoroughly enjoyed the clam chowder and everyone else who tasted it liked it as well.
The server was not friendly at all and seemed a little put out when asked a question or to be repeated.
Biggest disappointment though was that the beer was not very cold! So we had a whole pitched or semi cold beer which none of us were a fan of. I was VERY happy they had HARP on tap and they had a huge selection but I think that's all this place has going for it.
Like the decor, food is usually good, service.....usually mediocre to bad.
It's a shame too, as their theme is sound, the building is terrific, and Old Town needs successful businesses.
I've been there 3 times, and each time the food was good, with the exception of the last visit, when I tried their clams.
The garlic was overcooked, which ruined an otherwise good dish.
everything else was as expected though.
Not excellent, but good.
Service does seem to be an afterthought, as I have never had attentive service, even when we were the only ones in the place.
Maybe that's in keeping with the theme.
If you get good service, you must have the luck o' the Irish with ye.
If you have read any of my other reviews, you can tell that I'm always on the hunt for good pubs. Â I always enjoy good brews and U.K. based pub food. Â Gallagher's Pub is very good. Â The staff is very friendly and make you feel right at home. Â The fish platter is awesome! Â I had the biggest scallops that I have ever had at this very place. Â Gallagher's tops my list of places to eat when I visit Eureka.
Review Source:As much as we wanted this place to succeed (being Irish), I must unfortunately give Gallagher's the dreaded single star.
The wife and I have been three times now, spanning about three years. As much as we hate to contribute to the demise of Eureka's only purportedly Irish bar, we must do just that, because this place sucks.
The first time, the waitress brought our soup and main course at the same time -- which food not only didn't fit on our table, but by the time we'd eaten the soup, the fish & chips were cold, and the tables, wobbly.
Now, ask yourself: What kind of salt-and-pepper shakers should sit on the table of an Irish pub? Double-decker buses? Tiny beefeaters, perhaps? Big Bens?
Try miniature bottles of Corona beer. I swear: Corona bottles filled with salt and pepper. About as Irish as carne asada.
We gave them a second chance on the Fourth of July 2008. I'd planned to rendezvous there with the wife. She arrived early, and was promptly seated in the back of the restaurant. No drink, no menu, no service. I showed up after 20 minutes of her being completely ignored. The wife then attempted to summons a server at that point, but no luck: he didn't speak English. After ten more painful minutes, we had no option but to leave.
Finally, on our anniversary, we ventured back. Sitting at the bar, we ordered the "sausage sampler". It must be tried to be believed: One sausage was burnt to a crisp. The other was just 'alright'. The bleach-blond girls behind the bar obviously had better things to do than to serve us, as they chattered on and on about their personal lives, right in front of us on our special day.
I soooo wanted this place to succeed. An actual Irish pub, right here in Eureka?
Frankly, based on their abysmal food and service, I don't expect them to be open for St. Patrick's Day 2009.
Will they turn the joint around? Here's hoping.
I'm a fan of Gallagher's, mostly for considering the other options for food in Eureka after 9pm. Gallagher's may not have the most authentically Irish menu in the world; however it does have tasty food at reasonable prices. The menu consists of mostly standard American fare, with a small 'Irish' section available at different times throughout the week. One of my favorite aspects of the place is that the interior decor is very reminiscent of an Irish pub like the ones I enjoyed on my trip to Ireland, and even if it is a bit cliche I still find it to be comfortable and inviting.
Gallagher's may not be the most shining example of an Irish restaurant in the United States, however the fact that it is open late and and is an enjoyable place to get a bite warrants a solid four star rating.
My friend and I came here for our first time and were pleasantly surprised at the food and drinks! Â The restaurant is SOOO clean and the service was fantastic. Â I had the fish and chips while my friend got the patty melt. Â All excellent at excellent prices. Â Go here and enjoy the space, food and service!
Review Source:I love Irish Pubs, so when I heard there was finally one in town, I booked a party. Since then, I'v ebeen back several times with growing disaffection. Hardly an Irish pub in the drink department (Guiness on tap doesn't cut it alone) , and they only have Irish menu options Thursdays ( I think it's Thursday). The fish and chips are to die for, and steaksandwich great, however.... The service is pathetic. It just gets worse and worse every time I go there. last weekend I took my folks there when they were not bust at all. It took fifteen minutes to get a friggin table! If it wasn't for the family's desire for fish and chips, I would have left after two. This is only the latest example. The foodis good, but not Irish enough for me. The service, unacceptable. Never going back, very, very sadly...
Review Source:WOW!! True & excellent Irish coffee's (just like Brennan's in Berkeley) with Jameson's and a layer of  cream lingering at the top, not mixed in the coffee.
Local & UK beers on tap... A fun, sometimes loud sports bar of sorts, but tables away from it all if one chooses.
Best fish & chips around and other good hearty food as well.
Good friendly service, a great place to start off at for a night of  bar hoping.
Gallagher's delivers on the Irish goods when you're least expecting it.
As many of my reviews start, my wife and I were traveling and running on empty. With rumbling stomachs and a chill in out bones, we stumbled into Gallagher's hoping that it was at least passable. Slightly wary of any establishment that has an "Irish Thursday", we nonetheless ordered "something Irish" and contemplatively waited.
Though adorned with faux Irish kitsch inside, the food delivered on the goods with authentic seasonings and healthy portions. My shepherd's pie was some of the best that I've ever eaten.
Minus one star for a slighly oblivious waitstaff.
