I have been eating here for almost two years and have no complaints. When I have family come to town or just want to go for dinner with friends this is my go-to place. The lunch special is roughly $10 per person for two rolls and a drink/salad/soup. It's one of the best priced sushi places in the area. The place has a steady flow of people, but never enough to fill it, so there is always a place to sit. There is only one person making the rolls so it's best to go before or after a main meal, otherwise it's a 30-45 minute wait for everything. I'm holding back on that 5th star because I received a bit of attitude when I asked for the lunch menu 30 minutes after lunch ended when the place was empty. Being a long time, weekly costumer I expected a little grace period or at least just tell me lunch was over and not to complain about it. That, however, is my only negative experience and was not enough to diminish the quality of food that I go there for.
Review Source:I've been working myself through everythin on the menu and have realized that Gous besides having the best sushi/sashimi around, he also has the best ginger citrus salad dressing for his house Salad and the best pork fried gyoza I have ever tried in my life. The size / crispyness/ meat ratio of this gyoza is simply perfect. The ginger dressing and its exquisite color and taste will provide an instant wow factor to and for ur palate. The gyoza will leave you wondering if you want to order them again on the same visit. Â Love this place. It's an all around heck of a sushi joint!
Review Source:Surprisingly fresh sushi, super prices, and really warm owners. Â I hope this place stays in business. Â Â Very small dining room, and usually just a few folks eating there - mostly takeout. Â However, I see more and more at lunch. Â Â
They do need something else on TV at the Sushi Bar for the solo diners at lunchtime - how about CNBC or ESPN?
I've done take out here a few times. The sushi is good but not spectacular. Â Â Usually for spectacular sushi you pay double or triple the price. Fish has always been fresh to me. Â The reason I gave it 4 out of 5 stars was because they don't have brown rice as an option. Â I am one of those people that really enjoys brown rice instead of white and most sushi places offer a choice these days. Â Would I return yes but I wouldnt go out of my way for it.
Review Source:We ordered the beef teriyaki - it was good, but lacked flavor. The teriyaki was a bit pricy for a small portion and it had only a piece of broccoli. The edamame appetizer wasn't the best, it wasn't salted enough. Finally the two rolls we ordered one was the mexican roll and the other was spicy tuna will avocado. Both rolls weren't spicy at all. The avocado overpowered the one roll. For the price, we could have a better sushi meal elsewhere.
Review Source:I am giving this place a four star review, however I have only been here once. I have learned in the past, upon giving sushi restaurants 5 star reviews, that the quality of the sushi can drastically change on a second visit... except for Sushi Mikes in Dobbs Ferry.... which is 5 star tried and true. Since I am not always up for driving over the Tappan Zee, I have been looking for equally awesome sushi in North Jersey... this place is now going to be my go to.
We ordered shumai, kani salad, various rolls with tuna and salmon.  The whole pieces of fish on the top of the rolls were really fresh... that awesomeness when you can push your tongue to the top of your mouth and the tuna just melts- yup. There was also a really good rice/fish ratio. I like a thin fluffy layer of rice and not too, too  big of a roll.  They offer both low sodium and regular soy sauce on the table, which is big bc I like the regular stuff but my husband prefers low salt. There spicy tuna is the mashed up kind, which isn't a cool texture with me. I prefer a tuna roll with spicy sauce on top... but it was still good. Also, the Kani Salad could have used a bit more cucumber.
I assume that when my husband and I go back... and we will definitely go back... I could up this to a 5 star. Definitely try this place.
In response to Anuj:
It is fair to say some of what you say. But you don't know what you don't know or what you have not experienced. You should learn to respect others' perspectives. You have not been there everyday, nor have tasted every sushi. I experienced his ego by mentioning to him that I had a severe after taste when I got back home the previous time. I don't know about other days, but on that day, the sushi's quality was really low. He doesn't purchase his fish everyday from a market. He has his fish delivered once a week he said. Maybe I was there at the end of the previous batch of fish delivered. Or he chose to give me the oldest of what he had on that day. Â Any way, I mentioned my honest experience to him. Then he really showed his unhappy emotion. He was not shy offending me by saying that basically I know nothing about the taste. So, just tell him that you are not happy with his sushi someday, then you will find out that everyone is not perfect. Also he proudly mentioned another anecdote of how he had responded to a person who commented his sushi was not good. Well, he said (with such emotion) he had made another set of rolls on the spot and challenged him to eat to prove that his sushi always... tastes good. (Man, he has some temper...) That may be one way to get free sushi! By the way, I chose to write my first review at Yelp because I was very upset about how I was treated and thought the rating was too high! I really enjoy reading honest reviews at Yelp and tell my friends about that.
i just tried this place for lunch today and i was actually sad when i finished the last piece of sashimi...it was that good. it had a variety of 5 different fishes neatly packaged in a to-go container with a side of miso soup. i'm not a fan of tofu so i was happy to see large chunks of it in the soup so it was easy to pull out.
the sashimi was SO fresh and tasty, i could have kept eating despite being nice and full. the chef explained their lunch specials before i placed my order. prompt and pleasant service. Â i will definitely be going back!
As far as sushi goes in the Burbs, this place is SWEET!
Prices are not bad and the sushi man is really nice! Avocado Roll and Cucumber Rolls were the cheapest at 3.50 for a roll of 6 pieces, soups were 1.50 and the vegetarian and seaweed rolls were about 4.75.
The restaurant is quaint, quiet and small but often empty! It is a great date spot or a great spot if you want some quiet space to read or work over a meal.
There were some new interesting sushi options I hadn't heard of before as well--especially for vegetarians! I got seaweed salad INSIDE of a sushi roll, and it was very tasty!
They also carry foreign Japanese sodas, which is very cool. When I was there I forgot the soda I purchased in the fridge, and the man was very kind and told me that he would remember me and I could come back whenever I wanted.
I definitely recommend this place...especially if you are waiting for the 11A at the bus stop there to go to the city!
Gou's sushi is a hidden gem in Park Ridge located next to the Ridge Diner. The sushi is always fresh and tasty. My favorite is the Spicy Dragon roll- spicy tuna with crunch and sliced avocado on top. Restaurant is quite small, but they do have take out (pick up) and it's byob. Very reasonable prices as well.
Review Source:I love Gou Sushi. I can't say it enough. They have the best lunch specials around. For sushi rolls, they have lunch specials starting at $8 for two rolls and a soup (or salad or soda). I love the regular & special roll lunch combo because I can try out a new roll without having to pay a ridiculous price. And after I tried the Tristate roll, I was sold on Gou.
Let's talk about quality: I find the sushi equal in quality to the pricier sushi at other local restaurants. I love eel and unagi don. It's about $14 here (even at dinner), while other restaurants charge up to $24 for the same thing. There's no difference in amount of food, the taste, or the quality. Also, at Gou, the sushi chef takes the time to slice up the eel into bite-size pieces and arrange it neatly, while other place simply place long strips of eel across the rice (which is nearly impossible to cut).
The restaurant itself is definitely on the smaller side. There's table seating for maybe 12 and another 6 or so spaces at the sushi bar. Sometimes it's full-up, but you can usually get a seat without any trouble. The waitstaff is incredibly friendly and the sushi chef is always open to suggestions. Gou is probably the most welcoming sushi place I've ever been to.
*Just realized I forgot to mention the location. It doesn't have a standalone building. It's part of a bigger building with some stores and apartments next to The Ridge diner. There's some street parking right in front of it. There's also a lot behind it with a back entrance. There are usually placards in front of both doors (and the front entrance has red paper lanterns) but it can be easy to miss if you aren't looking for it.
