As always, choose your nights, and research the talent if you go to dance clubs/bars like this one. Grasshopper Underground is an exceptional venue for dance music. The talent they bring in here is consistently good, the staff are beyond cool and respectful.
Weekends can get a bit annoying with the drunk crowds coming in on Fridays and Saturdays, tripping over my shoes and spilling drinks into my face. Gee thanks.
But like I said, choose your nights and research your talent. I've seen some amazing DJs here on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Facebook Grasshopper Underground to be updated on all events.
The sound system is absolutely fantastic, and like I said, the talent is too.
Do it.
I love this place. It's nice to go to a dive bar that plays good House with that funky underground vibe. To the people who complain about going here because they think it's too small, nobody is dancing, and it's tough to have a conversation, hear this:
The fact that it's small will make it seem bigger when the place gets packed. People will dance when they get some drinks in them (it's best to come at 11:30 when it starts bumping instead of sitting around at 10 waiting for the night to kick off). Tough to have a conversation? What did you expect, a tea party? It's supposed to be loud, that's the point of it.
This place is a blast overall. If you're not into going to clubs with too much Trap and high school kids, this is the place for you. Very chill environment, friendly staff, and a cool mix of different people. Love ya Grasshopper, keep it real!!!.
Based on the new remodeling.
Great sound system. Great DJ Booth. Layout is MUCH better than it used to be.
Drink pricing is fine. Staff seems great. No real issues with this place anymore. Music is top shelf electronic and house. Great place to stop in and cover is always cheap.
They should let women in for free at this (and every) place in my opinion... other than that it's solid
Grasshopper has earned another star! I came back and cover was only $5 - I think the first time I was there was a special occasion guest DJ night. Anyway - I gotta say I love ending my Saturday nights dancing here. It has the perfect mix of friends just dancing around like crazy jumping & people gettin freaky on the dance flo. I don't like dance clubs that are TOO serious or too sexual - I enjoy a fun, friendly, flirty dance floor and Grasshopper provides. Very fun place to dance the night away, can't wait to come back.
Review Source:We thought we would check out Grasshopper while in Fernadale for a friend's birthday. After paying cover we went downstairs. It felt like being at a party in high school in someone's parent's basement. Â Essentially hipsters standing around in the dark drinking overly priced drinks while the bass literally thumps through your body. On the way out we attempted to get the cover back. Â I recommend saving yours.
Review Source:With the new year comes new resolutions....to eat better, quit doing this or start doing that, to tone up or do more cardio. Me personally, I'm not a joiner and gyms seem a little impersonal, so being an out of the box thinker, I decided that rather than spend the coin to ride an elliptical for an hour, I'd just dance my self to a better, leaner, happier me. Boogie Fever was and is still my long time, in town, dance spot and as Ferndalians we have the fortune of having 4 dance clubs in our backyard.
Given that the Grasshopper has been one of those spots that's changed hands and names a few times over the years I never paid it much thought. In fact I was never a true fan of this place even when it was Gracie's Underground and I love my martinis! There's no doubt that when at capacity, this place is a sardine can and yes they charge cover which is a drag BUT what you can count on is....first of all, solid drinks!!! The bartenders here know how to pour a drink. And secondly a DJ who can spin. I wasn't a huge fan of house music but I think the Grasshopper may have converted me. If you get here before 10 you'll be hard pressed to find anyone on the dance floor....fortunately Joe V. is a party starter so if you drop him in the mix he'll kick off the dance party by himself. You should friend him.
The Grasshopper is a little small, it's dim, it's loud, it's everything my grandmother would've hated but if you have the itch to dance, this place is like a crazy underground back-scratcher filled with pretty people ready to cut a rug. If you're looking for a new spot, pay your cover, get a few drinks in you and dance yourself to a new better you for 2013.
I just wanna dance! ...What the heck is everyone else doing at an outrageously loud electronic lounge when you can barely hear yourself talk? Really, I don't get it, and I would never expect to pay a cover charge to watch people standing around but that is exactly what had happened here on both occasions.
The DJs here are top notch and play music you can easily get down to. Drinks are fairly priced and well made but nothing out of the ordinary. The dark atmosphere helps with the "Underground" motif and the area is not huge so it gets busy quickly which can be fun. So, without the crowd that seemingly frequents this spot this could easily be a four or five stars but I simply can't get over the fact that with such good music pounding against my chest I've been one of maybe 10 people dancing. Sorry, the zombie sway doesn't count but if it did you could tack on maaaybe 5 more. People literally swarm around the disk jockey's stage and instead of getting their hands up in the air and moving to his creations, stare, like they are receiving a YouTube tutorial on how to mix music. AHHHH.
I can't handle it.
I'll try this spot a few more times before I totally write it off as a flop but be warned that you may want to have a backup plan if you are truly looking to shake it, and not in the corner by yourself.
I absolutely loved this place. If you don't like it really loud, don't go. It was red night so there was a low lilt red dim to the entire bar. The bartenders were fun, energetic and the drink was strong, exactly how I wanted. $6.00 specials with grey goose here and there. If you want really good house techno music, this is your place. Be sure to head there on the weekend though cause during the week there are not a lot of people there but that might be what you are looking for. Don't be afraid of the alley way entrance either, it's worth it!
Review Source:Small bar in Ferndale - the entrace was a bit small so keep an eye out. Stairs lead you underground (hence to name of the bar) to a small, dark bar/dance scene. It was really loud inside so it's hard to have a conversation with someone. No cover when we went on a Saturday night. There are two small bars on either end of the place; it's a good thing it wasn't packed otehrwise it'd be super hard to order a drink.
The bartender we had was very nice and served us right away. Dance floor is filled with dancers battling it out for the centerstage.
I was pretty drunk so it was fun to me. The bouncers are nice and let you come in and out (as long as you show ID).
Fellow Yelper, Valerie G., and I were out and about last Saturday night in Ferndale and were having trouble finding a place that had an open table or bar stools or whose service didn't suck (aka Como's). Â I think sometimes they have a cover, but not when we got there, otherwise we wouldn't have gone in. Â
We grabbed two bar stools and ordered drinks. They have pretty much every flavor of Pinnacle vodka and any other kind of alcohol, plus a large selection of bottle beers. There was a d.j. with some sort of techno/club music bumping that was a little loud for my preference, but I was at a club type bar, so I should expect that.
They had a menu with a handful of specialty cocktails and some food that looked appealing though we weren't hungry. Â We each ordered one of their fancy drinks and were surprised when they were only $5 - not sure if this was a special or what.
I thought this was a pretty good bar for what we were looking for, but I'm a little on the lame side these days so I don't think that I'll normally head here at 11:30 on a Saturday night, but I'd go back a little earlier in the night for some drinks.
The Grasshopper Pub is former Gracies Underground in Ferndale is a great place that is local, intimate and has great line up of DJs almost every night.
The venue has been remodeled and they recently installed an amazing sound system. I am very big fan of this place and go there at least once a week.
Most music that is played there is electronic music from different genres like house, techno and etc. DJs very from local to national to international stature. I have recently seen Detroit Legends like Stacey Pullen, Terence Parker and Juan Atkins perform there on different nights.
Drink prices are reasonable and made very well.
I also think they have bar food even though i never tried it so i can't comment on that.
Hope you will check it out and enjoy it
