While it was a little odd to wait outside for 30+ minutes on a Saturday evening, only to discover the place to be decidedly uncrowded upon being seated, we thoroughly enjoyed our meal. Â Apparent under-staffing aside, the food was fantastic. Â I ordered the Rustico, and was actually served a burger that was cooked no more than medium (I order med-rare or medium, and am typically served well done at most places). Â Delicious burger. Â Spectacular fries. Â
The biggest surprise was the homemade ketchup. Â It was, no exaggeration, a revelation. Â Ketchup has always been a favored condiment of mine, but now I realize it can be So Much More.
In sum, weirdly long wait, but our food was served quickly and was wonderful. Â Worth it!
Oh, my, wow! Â Veggie burger is best I have ever had!! Â Vegan chili was fantastic except that I had to add lots of hot sauce to give it a kick. Â Homemade ketchup was good but somewhat bland. Â My companions loved their burgers, fries and slaw. Â And the prices are just right. Â The only thing to not like about this place is the wait, but it's totally worth it!!
Review Source:We tried the Green Truck on our visit to Savannah based upon all of the local recommendations. A lot of people said this was the best burger they ever had. Sorry, but Rochester has dozens of places that do burgers better than this. Maybe we caught them on a bad day but my wife's veggie burger (Mighty Veg) and my Rustico weren't up to par. When ask for a rare burger at a joint that specializes in them, I expect it to be rare, not medium.
Sorry, but not worth the half hour wait. Â Not as good as it gets. Â I'm not a fan so no Yays! and it's not A-OK either. Â There has to be better casual food off the touristy areas in Savannah.
Green Truck Pub has amazing burgers and chili - even if you're vegan! The homemade veggie patty is delicious.
There is no outside seating.

Excellent burger and great atmosphere! Â Service was friendly and quick. I had the RUSTIC burger and the goat cheese sent the flavor out of this world. Â My wife had the FLAT TOP but substituted chicken, it was probably the best chicken sandwich I've ever had. Â Go there! Â You won't regret it.
Review Source:Based upon Yelp reviews, we sought out the Green Truck Pub while visiting Savannah. Â We arrived later in the evening on a Thursday, around 8:30, and there was 30 minute wait for a table. Â We took the wait as a good sign and our intuition and the Yelp reviews proved to be true. Â The restaurant is not that big, but the service was fast - so they turnover the place fairly quickly. Â We were a party of four, with diverse tastes and dietary limitations (2 meat eaters, a vegetarian, and a vegan); and this place had something for all of us. Â The burgers were awesome, even the homemade veggie burger. Â The vegan chili was to die for. Â We highly recommend this great restaurant to everyone close enough to get there, you may have to wait a bit, but it is certainly worth it.
Review Source:Hands down, Best Burger you will ever eat. Seriously, its that good. My favorite burger place on the planet. We drive almost an hour to come here.
The first time you eat here and have to wait, you question your ability to stick around and not go somewhere else.
The second time you know to bring a crossword puzzle and a tent because the wait is no longer an issue.
Not even going to keep writing because it will just make me want to leave work to get it. Only dissappointment is that they are closed on Sunday & Monday.
waits can be long but soldier through--the food is worth it! Great beers always on tap and the fries are the http://bomb.com
I had goat cheese and bacon on my burger and it was incredible.
The goat cheese brownie for dessert was melty-chocolately-cheesecake-y heaven.
Don't miss the house-made ranch, my sister-in-law wanted to take a bath in it. They also make their own ketchup.
Don't walk--run to this place!
The Green Truck in my book, is easily the best burger I've had in my life? It goes head to head with The Bird, a Berlin, Germany burger place that's burgers are so good they could be eaten plain as in no toppings and they still melt in your mouth.
Green Truck, I would give a 9 out of 10 on the delicious scale. Grass-fed burgers always taste better to me, as opposed to cows that are fed bi-products of themselves.
I got the Trailer Park burger that has one of Savannah's most trendy toppings, pimento cheese as well as bacon, tomato and onion and it was a mouthgasm of flavor. I also got the house made fries which were just ordinary looking but very tasty. My friend ordered the "Whole Farm" burger which sounded megamazing as well, complete with fried egg, cheddar and bacon. Our burgers had house-made pickles on them, and they also make their own ketchup.
We both ordered Mexicoke, which is coke in tall glass bottles and contains cane sugar instead of high-fructose corn-syrup and it went perfect with our burgers.
When we got there, there was a wait for a table, but room at the bar, so we sat there and decided to get our food there instead. They have lots of choices of beer. They also serve Perc coffee, a local fave, and their Specials board had a bacon bread pudding that looked quite interesting.
It took me awhile to get to this place because its on Habersham and down the ways from most of the popular eateries even though its still in what's considered the historic district. Butthey have their own free parking lot which is nice.
Get there early for a seat, We left the restaurant around 8pm on a Tuesday and there were a lot of people waiting for a table.
This place was packed when I got there! I have to tell you their creamy chicken soup and seasonal quesadilla were PHENOMENALICIOUS! My boyfriend had the burger which was pretty good, I like them more on the fact that they are made from grass fed cows and all that jazz. I will have to come back and try other burgers to pick out the best.
Review Source:I picked this place because I was told it had some of the best hamburgers in the nation . Plus my husband is an avid hamburger lover . Cat/ Katherina was our bartender and waited on us. My husband chose the Trailer Park Hamburger - yum. I had the Flathead burger with Gorgonzola cheese - splendid and juicy. Best hamburger I have tasted in years. Next time I plan to try the Rustico Hamburger. The beer is great too. I chose the five golden rings beer - caramel spicy.
Review Source:Where SCAD grads go to drink, and also work. Â Featuring grass-fed beef "from the islands". Â Overheard conversations included art, surfing, and the last time the patron ate red meat. Â Large beer selection, mostly bottled with a rotating tap. During dinner hours there is definitely a wait, though not usually as long as they say.
Review Source:Because of all of the hype, I was expecting a GREAT burger. Â I got a good burger, but nothing to write home about. Â The place was packed, full of groovy hipsters. Â Maybe my not being a hipster affected my taste buds? Â Anyway, it was a good burger and fries, but I won't fight the crowds to eat here again. Â If I can hit a slow time, I'll go back, but it won't be a priority.
Review Source:Everyone told me to go to the Green Truck. On my last night in Savannah, I made it there! I'm not one to go out of my way for a burger but I would definitely come back here next time I visit.
My friend and I swapped halves of each other's burgers and it was a genius idea. It was juicy and delicious. I ordered the Trailer Park and is was amaaazzzinngg. Â I highly recommend coming here if you are in Savannah.
A restaurant that pitches local fresh food? Sure. Why not. Friends highly recommended this place so I thought I had to try it out.
Restaurant isn't that large, it'll seat what looks to be like 50-65 patrons at a time before there's a wait. And that is including people sitting at the bar.
Came here on a saturday night around 7:30 and had about an hour wait. Boy, it better be worth it right? So we decided to wait. Ended up to be about a 40 minute wait. You could go to the bar and grab a drink in the mean time or enjoy the company that you're with at the moment.
Tip: If you want to avoid the wait, go just a tad later for dinner, say around 8-8:30. Places empties out quickly on a saturday night around that time when I was there.
Burgers start around 7-8 dollars a burger, so it's a higher premium than you would spend at say, five guys.
Had the hot rod deluxe: nice sized burgers. served with hand cut fries. Some were a bit burnt and some were soft, but didn't have that crisp that I was expecting. Burger was a good portion and still moist. I would've liked it to have more options of how they cook it, say medium rare.
Some unique things:
Ketchup and bbq sauce: I think it's either home made or comes from a different company. It's not your regular heinz ketchup sauce. There's more if a distinct tomatoe taste to it. It's either you like it or hate it. I'm sorta indifferent to it. I would rather prefer the bbq sauce, again, not your typical bottled flavor.
Would I recommend this place? Sure. I don't think Savannah has a large burger scene so it's hard not to recommend it. I wouldn't mind to come back and try their kitchen sink burger.
Ya'll there is Lots and Lots of hype about this place. Â I have been disappointed everytime I have eaten at Green Truck and when I tell anybody, "Hey, I know everybody likes it, but I swear, I don't think it is that good." Â The answer I get is "You know, Erica, it is grain fed organic beef and they make their own ketchup." Â Yeah. Â I know. Â
I have eaten there at least 6 times. Â I hate giving up on a concept like this one! ( But I have. ) The taste is very boring. Â Ketchup without flavor and the pimento cheese is too bitter. Â Burgers are average. Â Not flavorful or juicy. It is an average burger with boring ketchup. And long long lines to eat an over priced average burger with boring ketchup. Â My bad review does not matter I know, but hype tastes like cardboard and I refuse to be bullied into eating there again. Â There I said it. Â :) And so did a review dated 11/24/12 by a guy named Tony. Â Yeah. Â I agree!
I love the idea - local, organic, fresh etc etc. Its the best way to eat, hands down. This place just doesn't quite pull it off. Despite this it is really popular, so there was a 30 minute wait. We waited at the bar. First thing: they call themselves a neighborhood pub, but if this is that, then Norm from Cheers is rolling over on his bar stool. It is mostly a restaurant, with a small bar area. It is neither pub nor neighborly feeling. Not sure why they play that angle.
Second thing: They pitch local produce, but this does not extend to the beer list. We asked for anything local and the best they could do was from Sweetwater from Atlanta. I had a good pale ale, and figured maybe Savannah doesn't have a microbrew scene. A 2 second google search proved that theory wrong. Local beers all over the town, just not in this "local" place.
When we were seated our server was a very friendly guy who seemed to suffer from ADD and made the whole dinner feel like we were on an out of control bus. He was determined to ensure water glasses were constantly full, but little things like ordering food or getting a second beer seemed to take forever.
Now I can forgive all this if the food matches the hype. It did not. I ordered The Farm. Three options for 'doneness', and apparently "cooked" means overdone. The explanation on the menu suggested it would be a touch under medium, and it was the recommended option, but I guess I got that wrong. The trade off was the fried egg on the burger was the opposite. It was not cooked and had that gooey uncooked white stuff going on. Kinda grim. It seemed a shame to treat grass fed beef this way.
There is also a movement in upscale burger joints to do fresh handcut fries. Freshly cut potatoes need to be fried twice to get any kind of crispy, otherwise they are flabby and unappealing, as they were at Green Truck.
I left half a burger on the table and that for me, says it all. Close, but no cigar.
"Now THAT'S a tasty burger" - every town needs a Green Truck Pub - a laid back restaurant with high quality food and a great beer selection.
We had the Pimento cheese appetizer, which is splendid. My one minor criticism here would be that the bread was a little bit over toasted for my taste. Â But the star of the show, the pimento cheese, was excellent.
On to the burger...first off, do yourself a favor and take a bite of the meat with nothing else on it. It's amazing how much different (BETTER) high quality, fresh meat tastes. Â OK, now you can take that ginormous bite your mouth has been waiting for. Â Yeah, it's that good.
I've tried many burgers in Savannah. Green Truck gets the winner thus far. I ordered the Farm Burger today, which has the egg on top. The Warehouse makes the same burger on River Street, called The Hangover, but Green Truck's with the grass fed meat and super fresh toppings (advertised as all local) is a close win. They also serve freshly cut french fries served with homemade ketchup... kinda hard to beat. I doubt I could taste the difference between a grass fed cow and yummy cows fed with... non grass. But it did taste pretty friggin good.
They are very busy at lunch and we were pressed for time. So we sat at the bar and got our burgers to go. The bartender was nice and kept everyone's glasses full, with a smile. I want to come back to sit down at a table and enjoy every bite, instead of scarfing it down while driving my manual transmission back to Hunter in record speed so I could jump in my Blackhawk and slip the surly bonds of the SAV.
As the man always says, "I'll be back!"
This local burger place was good, but from the hype I had heard it was a bit of a let down.
Don't get me wrong the food was really good and I really enjoyed the small touches: Coca Cola made with cane sugar in its glass bottle, fresh made ketchup, fresh ingredients on the burger. On the whole everything was delicious about our meals.
Unfortunately the wait was extremely long; beware this place is very popular! Once we got inside the situation did not improve and I got the impression that there were only 3 waitstaff including the hostess in the entire place. Perhaps some waiters could keep up with that amount of tables (this place is not THAT big) but the ones working that day simply were not up to the task. Getting the check took longer than eating my meal.
This is the kind of restaurant I would love to see more of in Savannah. Â I prefer supporting local restaurants and I find outside of seafood (which I don't eat), Savannah doesn't have much local to offer.
Be prepared to wait. Â We went on a Tuesday night and waited around 30 mins. Â It was well worth the wait. Â Like many of the other reviews said, they get their ingredients from local farms- organic when possible. Â The beef comes from Hunter Cattle in Brooklet. Â
I got the plain burger and it was yummy, as were the fries. The restaurant was fairly small inside, so I would avoid bringing large groups and small kids. I had my one year old with me and I felt her high chair got in the way a bit.
I seriously do not understand the hype. Â It's a burger. Â That's about it. Â Is this one of those situations in which "nothing draws a crowd like a crowd"? Â
When we got there (6 p.m. on a Saturday), people were milling around outside - the wait had already gotten pretty long. Â We were told it could be up to an hour, but being that we had been looking forward to it all day, the reviews on here were pretty solid, and my husband LOVES a burger, we waited. Â
Yes, about an hour later or so the two of us were seated. Here I am, expecting to be wowed by my wait. Not so much. My husband ordered the Trailer Park and I got the special - a Vidalia Onion burger.
When I got my burger, I was SO SO hungry, and SO SO SAD. Â It was boring. Â I mean straight up boring and a little dry. Â I was waiting for a juicy burger with onion deliciousness, and how disappointed I was. Â It's not that it was gross or inedible, but I guess for all the hype and the wait, I was hoping it would all be worth waiting for. Â It was not. Â I guess I'm also of the mind that the "special" should actually be special - it should have something good and different. Â But my husband's burger, which was standard menu fare, was so much better than mine. Â In retrospect, I should have sent it back, but I don't know what the policy is if something is prepared correctly and you just don't like it. Â
I will say that I might have given it a higher rating if I ordered something else. Â I don't think this place is wholly bad, but I don't think it's worth the wait, either.
Oh, and the "homemade ketchup" is spaghetti sauce. Â No, for real, it looks and tastes like spaghetti sauce. Â Weird.
Great place for a burger. I saw it had a lot of hype, and they totally lived up to it. Good beer selection, friendly staff, and top quality food. All for a reasonable price.
Good quality food all around, not just the meat. I got a med-rare hot rod deluxe burger with a side salad. Absolutely delicious. The burger was good enough it didn't need to be slathered with ketchup and mayonnaise, plus i really like being able to eat a red burger without worrying about e. coli poisoning. Â Salad was worth the extra 2 dollars. It had apples, nuts and bleu cheese all mixed with some kind of vinaigrette.
My girlfriend got the trailer park burger with fries. Unfortunately, I didn't get the opportunity to try the burger, but I had some of the fries with the house-made ketchup. -Phenomenal- Â I love normal ketchup, but their ketchup is much better than any name-brand favorite you may have.
Other reviewers have complained about prices and waiting. I did not have a problem with either. I have paid more for burgers not made with grass fed beef with no local ingredients, so as far as price goes it was great considering other places try overcharging for using all the local/grass-fed buzzwords. As far as being crowded- I went on a Tuesday afternoon instead of a Friday night, so i did not run into a long wait or a large crowd of pretentious hipsters.
If I ever make it back to Savannah I will definitely come back here.
Let me preface this review by stating that the burger I got was great. Â The 60 minute wait this past Saturday is totally not worth it. Â Okay..to the review.
As previously stated, we got there at 7pm this past Saturday and were told that it would be a 45 - 60 minute wait. Â Okay..well, we knew we'd have to wait, but jeez...this place is just a hamburger joint. Â Alright, well bucked up and decided we'd stick around and give this us a try.
Probably within 30 - 45 minutes into the wait, some people were arriving and finding out that there was a 90 minute wait. Â That's crazy. Â And maybe I'm spoiled living in Atlanta, but there are plenty of good hamburger joints where you won't have to wait that long even on a Saturday night.
So, finally...after waiting for 59 minutes we were finally called. Â There is no outdoor seating, so this is not a pet friendly restaurant, despite the fact that it shows up in the "Pet Friendly Restaurants" in Yelp searches. Â Anyways, we got seated at a 2 top and our waitress was by within a minute or 2 to bring us menus and take our drink orders. Â She was nice enough. Â At this point we were starving so we promptly put in our orders. Â I ordered the "Trailer Park" burger cooked medium rare with fries ($10.50). Â This place attempts to do mostly organic and eliminating additives, preservatives, etc... Nice concept, but some thing just taste a little strange without them.
Maybe 10 - 15 minutes later, our food came out. Â My burger was overcooked (which I anticipated from the other reviewers) and probably came out medium to medium well. Â There was no pink in the middle. Â FAIL. Â However, despite this, my burger tasted great. Â It probably was the pimento cheese that really gave it the oompph. Â The burger wasn't overly fatty, and therefore wasn't super flavorful, but the bacon was really tasty. Â The bacon also wasn't overly fatty but was really flavorful. Â So, the combination of the pimento cheese with the bacon and it not being an overly fatty burger made for a great burger. Â Not the best I've ever had, but definitely on the higher end.
Now the fries, were maybe a 6 out of 10. Â They did taste fresh and apparently are hand cut. Â However, I prefer my fries crispy as opposed to a little bit limp and under-cooked for my tastes. Â I'm sure to each their own, but I've definitely had better fries in my life. Â Okay...to the ketchup. Â As I'd read from other reviewers, it does taste more so like marinara sauce then ketchup. Â Look, I know you're trying to do the "organic" thing and making "greener" choices, but that ketchup is just weird. Â Corn syrup, by now, is the way Americans are accustomed to having their ketchup. Â Anyways, as you've probably derived, I didn't care for the ketchup and the fries were slightly over mediocre.
My wife had the "special" of the night burger, Vidalia Onion burger ($11.00), which was basically the same thing as mine minus the bacon and pimento cheese. Â I thought it was pretty disappointing. Â Not much flavor....and now that I think about it, Â maybe the toppings are what makes these burger really good and not so much the actually burger itself.
All in all, my burger was good, but I cannot say I'd ever wait for 60 minutes to get it at a place like this again. Â Maybe I'd do a 30 minute wait, but it's totally not worth more of your time then that.
I liked the concept of this place; it had all the buzzwords that make my little bleeding heart go pitty-pat: local, organic, grass-fed, etc.
it's a very small, hipster-centric space, so on a Wednesday night there was a bit of a wait. There were some non-diners parked at a couple tables, hovering over a laptop and sucking down PBR, so our party of three waited for a while. We eventually snagged bar seats, which was A-OK.
I ordered the Trailer Park burger, which consisted of a grass-fed beef burger, pimento cheese and bacon. I am always sold if pimento cheese is involved. I ordered it medium-rare and was immediately corrected by the server: "We cook all our burgers medium-rare to medium." Okay.
When it came out it was more medium to medium well, which kind of killed the flavor of the meat itself, but overall it was a tasty sandwich. Would have been better cooked to my specifications, though.
My companions both ordered the quesadilla special, which was a kale number, and they both seemed pleased with their selections.
Good beer selection, decent atmosphere.
I like Green Truck. I support good organic restaurants. We had a really attentive waiter who looked a little like Paul Rudd when he smiled, so that helped.
The appetizer of spiced nuts was cool, although we didn't finish them all, we gave it an A for originality. I tried the veggie burger with veggie chili on top and you know what? Not bad. Another time I had the Adult Grilled Cheese, which sounds like it's Thanksgiving and you get to eat your sandwich at the grown up's table, but it's just a regular grilled cheese on sourdough or rye or another kind of bread I forgot and any kind of cheese they have. Plain old American on sourdough was good enough for me. Not too impressed with the fries and the homemade ketchup had a little relish in it that made me wish I brought some spare ketchup packets from McDonalds.
If you're going to Green Truck, arrive about 4pm-ish to avoid the rush. It can be really packed which says this place is popular.
Four stars for a burger joint? Â From a vegetarian? Â Yep. Â For what it is - this place rocks. Â And clearly everyone knows it. Â We got there early and had a 45 minute wait. Â But be patient! Â Have a beer as you sit outside and chat with friends (and for bog's sake bring some bug spray!). Â Once inside - service is friendly, helpful, and quick. Â The food: Â Pimento cheese seems to be a local phenomenon. Â I had never heard of it before, but I tried some here (on crostini, with pickles). Â Yum. Â I had a veggie patty done up "Flathead" style. Â Yum. Â And fries...with the housmade ketchup. Â I liked the ketchup, but most of my table did not. Â And beer. Â Don't recall which one, but they had an awesome beer selection both on tap and in the bottle. Â
I want to go back, but Savannah is very far away. Â *sobs*
I was very excited to try this restaurant during our recent stay in Savannah. Â Their menu is fun, and chock full of diverse and intriguing options... and I'd read such wonderful things about their housemade veggie patty! Â We made it our dinner destination on a fine Wednesday evening.
The place seems to be quite popular; we arrived early in the evening to find ourselves with a 45 minute wait amidst a crowd of people and savage insects. Â Once seated, though, we were able to relax with a selection from their huge beer menu. Â (The pear cider was awesome.) Â Our waiter was friendly and super enthusiastic, and handled our barrage of questions with grace, ease, and a smile.
I had to see what this Pimiento Cheese was all about, so we started off with an order of that. Â Spread onto toasty crostini, this stuff was smack-yo'-momma good. Â (Note to self: Try the Trailer Park sans bacon.) Â Side salads were fresh and flavorful; gorgonzola and spiced nuts made them noteworthy.
We then tucked into our burgers. Â As promised, the veggie patty was very good. Â I had mine El Jefe-style, which was a bit messy (corn kernels and black beans all over the place!) but very tasty, with its complementary combination of avocado, cheddar and jalapenos. Â The Flathead was topped with provolone and piled high with sauteed mushrooms and onions. Â Both were served with loads of well-seasoned and very tasty fries. Â (I ate the fries dry. Â Truth be told, I didn't really enjoy the housemade ketchup so much. Â I agree that housemade doesn't need to be bland. Â Ketchup should be spicy; that's what separates it from tomato paste!) Â The omnivore among us also enjoyed his (beef) burger immensely. Â I don't recall which one he had (the Blue Ribbon, perhaps?) but I believe he might have said that it was one of the best burgers he's had.
Sadly, dessert wasn't so spectacular. Â Their pecan pie was very dry, containing just barely enough goop to bind the nuts together. Â Still, we were excited to find the one pie crust in all of Savannah that isn't made with lard...
I liked Green Truck a lot, and would definitely return - but earlier. Â And with my own ketchup.
We don't live far from the Green Truck so we've eaten here a few times. It gets packed quick so we try to get there early, and usually don't have to wait long.
The good: grassfed beef, natural chicken. I don't eat beef but they can make any burger with a chicken breast and hold the bun, too. (I don't eat wheat.)
Pleasant service and the place looks clean.
The bad:
Packed some times. Coleslaw needs a better dressing. Food is a little bland. But I'd rather have my food a little bland and natural than have it flavored with crap.
I have strongly mixed feelings about this place. After a few visits, I've identified what they get right and what is off. So let me break it down for you:
Likes
Atmosphere: Kitchy without being campy, this place has all sorts of repurposed vintage goods that make Green Truck unique. If you sit at the bar, the bartender might just give you a fistful of quarters to play DJ on retro, record-only jukebox. I mean really, how often do you get to do that?
Food ethic: Green Truck is devoted to sourcing from local farmers and artisans. We need more places that think like they do.
Beer Selection: What can it say that hasn't already been said? It's great.
Dislikes
Ketchup: I'm all for "made-from-scratch," but the ketchup tastes like thickened tomato juice. Someone out there is going to retort, "But that's how it's supposed to taste. It's not Heinz." I've made ketchup from scratch before and it needs lots of seasoning (thinking pickling spices) to taste authentic. I'm guessing these spices can't be sourced locally, which is why they are omitted, but the real flavor of ketchup is gone.
Burger: For a burger joint, I was not blown away. My burgers have consistently been overcooked and, therefore, dry. The texture of the meat is good, but overall the burger isn't worth waiting for half an hour in the Savannah heat.
Pimiento cheese sandwich: Pimiento cheese spread may be one of my favorite things to eat, so I've become a bit snobbish about it. Green Truck let me down with the whole mustard thing. I was thinking yellow mustard or even stone ground, homemade mustard, but what I got was the overly sinus-inflaming, European stuff, which distracted from the flavor of the pimiento cheese. If I order it again, it will be sans-mustard.
Pickles: Cucumbers in vinegar do not a pickle make.
My buddies and I wanted to go here because we heard it was good, and they had also heard about how it was always packed. I figured, "well it's probably packed cos it's so good!" But when you go inside and see how small the whole place in then yeah... you find out one of the reasons why.
We waited for awhile, the cloudless sky allowing for the sun to blaze down upon us. Finally we went inside. It was about 12 pm so I didn't want a beer, but I did peruse the selection - pretty impressive.
I ordered a flathead chicken sandwich and my mates got some variety of grasshead burger. The flathead has sauteed mushrooms, onions, and provolone. Instead of fries I opted for a side salad with southwestern vinaigrette - damn Gina! I was pretty impressed with that. I was just kind of meh to the sandwich. Every element to it came out pretty routine. I know it's kind of hard to season grilled chicken sometimes, but yeah... I just didn't care about it.
Also, I tried some of my friends fries. They are homemade but they're just uh, a little gross to me. Soggy and no flavor. The homemade ketchup is also disgusting, in my opinion (btw I also hate Heinz). It just tasted like cinnamon.
Also, the two people I dined with can put food away like it's nothing (and not gain weight!) but they didn't even finish their burgers. I think we were all on the same page about our entrees. Good, but nothing to write home about.
By no means am I recommending not to go here. Do! If I went again I would def get a salad and some beer.
Leading up to my dinner at Green Truck, I was very excited. After all, the place had come highly recommended, and, I had yet to write a five star review. Due to the fact that I love hamburgers almost as much as "Wimpy" of "Popeye" fame, I couldn't shake the idea of how appropriate it would be, if this, a glorified burger joint, would be the first restaurant to receive that much coveted award. After the bill was paid and the table wiped clean, however, the record still stood. The culprit this time? Simple logistics.
My wife and I are the type who love adventure, and sometimes that can be found in the simplest of tasks, such as finding a new spot for dinner. It was a wet and windy Friday evening in February, when we decided it was time to give Green Truck a try. Having cast off from our home on the islands with no set destination, other than good food, in mind, we would soon learn that we were a bit ill-prepared.
As we pulled into the parking lot, I noted that the place already appeared packed at 6:00 pm on a Friday evening. While I'm not the type who enjoys a long wait, I also believe that a restaurant's popularity, and subsequent crowds, are a direct reflection of it's quality of food and service, so I chose to take it as a good sign.
Upon approaching the building, we were greeted by a hostess stationed at a podium just outside the front door. After providing her with our names, we were informed that there would be a twenty to thirty minute wait for a table. Not a problem....until we were also informed that there wasn't actually anywhere to wait INSIDE of the building. Not having considered the possibility of being trapped outside, we were now caught in less-than-pleasant elements without jackets or an umbrella. We also found that the very limited seating located outside of the restaurant was soaking wet. Not being intoxicated, we decided that we still cared a bit too much about appearances, and opted to stand in order to keep our butts, and dignity, high and dry.
During the wait, I noted that as patrons left the restaurant, there was still a lengthy turn-around time for the tables to be bussed, and the next guests to be seated. I would soon realize that this was due to the fact that the hostess was pulling double-duty, bussing tables herself, and then returning outside to call the next name.
When we finally were seated, there wasn't much left to complain about at all. The menu was very interesting and descriptive, and gave patrons the opportunity to choose from a variety of sandwiches or salads. Feeling a bit adventurous, I opted for "The Whole Farm", a burger topped with lettuce, tomato, onion, cheddar, bacon.....and a fried egg! I will tell you that this was probably one of the absolute best burgers I've eaten in my life, and the freshness of all of the ingredients was readily apparent. In the case of "The Whole Farm", the addition of the egg did little to change the experience, other than giving the burger a bit more of a "salty" taste. If you find yourself having a hard time making a decision, go ahead and give it a try, it's nothing to be afraid of.
On the other hand, I was slightly less happy with the fries, and homemade ketchup that other reviewers boast about. The fries honestly reminded me of those from "Five Guys", only with slightly lower quality. Prefering the latter over quantity, I wouldn't mind if Green Truck gave the larger "steak-style" fries a go. I think they'd make an excellent compliment to an excellent burger. As for the ketchup, while not bad by any means, I simply found it a bit too sweet, with it's flavor reminding me more of cocktail sauce.
As I mentioned before, while the dining experience was above average, the logistics simply leave much to be desired. With all of the good publicity, and subsequent money, that Green Truck seems to be enjoying, I'd say it's time for a few changes. A larger buidling, which can accomodate more diners, and include an indoor waiting area, is long overdue. It seems that they have also found themselves a bit short on staff, with the hostess being forced to bus tables, and I believe that this would be another problem easily remedied.
I'm sorry Green Truck, as much as I wanted you guys to be the first to take that fifth star, I just couldn't do it. However, I will most definately be back. Maybe one day I'll walk in to find that you've taken what little bit of criticism I've been able to give to heart.
