Great atmosphere with the worst service. Incredibly slow every time. Have been there 5 times but it never improves and this last time was the straw that broke the camel's back. Pub fare can be good but is highly variable. There are much better options out there and I would suggest finding them. Good luck.
Review Source:When this spot first opened we frequented it at least three times a week because of the staff and the relaxed atmosphere. You can always count on regulars at the bars or with their families. A few of our favorite wait staff left so we stopped frequenting as often (then again we stopped having to go over to that side of town as much). It's nice to say some of the same old faces still work here. However, the owner has put us off a few times. We've seen him boss some of his workers at the bar wear he normally sits and waiters and hosts will sometimes make comments about him, some unprofessionalism. He can sometimes act standoffish. Otherwise he can be a pretty nice guy and he knows what he's doing.
The food, although not the best, is actually really good for bar fare. It's pretty consistent although every once in a while you can get (as a previous reviewer noted) dried out carrot sticks and not-the-greenest wedge salads. The ranch and blue cheese dressings are great and the wings are usually nice and crisp. For an appetizer their spinach dip is creamy and delicious. The chicken sandwiches and fries (regular and sweet potato -with the raspberry dipping sauce) are also pretty good. The sweet tea is solid.
In the late spring/summer their outdoor patio is nice. Their closed in patio is just like their indoors now that they've converted it. TVs are all around playing various things and if you want to watch something else all you have to do is ask your waiter.
All in all you can depend on the green and black when you want to please the whole family or catch a sports game by yourself- everyone is welcome. Even if you want to make a late-night run you can swing by and get the same quality service and food.
Stopped in for a late lunch after picking up a pile of records at Ella Guru's new location (same shopping center). For those vinylly-inclined, seek my blog at http://www.BigBlackDisk.…
So - I ordered the Patty Melt, as this is one of my all-time favorite sandwiches. Medium-rare (because they're using decent meat, doncha know), a lovely little pile of sweet-potato fries, and some Tabasco on the side because that's what my Patty Melts get, with ketchup.
Best I've had in Atlanta, period. And I've had a few. First of all, they do not skimp on the meat - this sucker is huge. Second, the onions were neither overcooked nor undercooked - they were exactly the way they should be. The mushrooms on the burger were a new one - never had a patty melt with 'shrooms before, but it was delish nevertheless. Lastly: fresh rye. Really nice.
If this place reminds you of Taco Mac it's because the owner, Robert Shellenberger, is an alum of that great Southern institution. If it exceeds your recollection of Taco Mac's food, I wouldn't be surprised. If this patty melt is any indication of what the rest of the menu will be like, then this place is going to be on my short list. Which is dangerous - because it is located in the same lot as Ella Guru, and Don knows I'm a sucker for good used vinyl ... which means a $10 lunch could turn into $60 in a blink if I'm not careful.
Go, enjoy, it's wonderful.
4 out of 5 until I go a couple of more times and get a feel for the rest of the menu.
The quintessential neighborhood pub. Â This is where I take the family when I just want to relax and enjoy a good meal - which means we show up again and again week after week. Â The atmosphere is comfortable and family friendly, the service is uniformly attentive and friendly, and the food is surprisingly good for pub-fare. Â If that sounds likes what you're looking for, you can't go wrong stopping in at The Grove.
Review Source:I've been trying out the restaurants in this area and this was next on my list. Â I read the little history of it so it seemed like a relaxing place to go and catch a game on tv and grab a decent beer.
It was definitely a relaxed atmosphere and there were people of all ages. Â I sat in the outer area (not exactly the outside) but it was considerably colder. Â It was also away from the crowd. Â I think I would've preferred sitting closer to the bar.
From what I could tell they had a pretty good selection of beers. Â They had a nice list of beers on draft which is always a plus. Â For food, I went with a buffalo chicken salad. Â It was pretty good. Â Nothing special but satisfied the craving. Â
All and all, a good place to go. Â Service was good, food was good. Â A little bit of a weird crowd because of the variety of ages. Â Next time I'll try to get a table closer to my age groups.
Wings are excellent. I always ask for them extra crispy and they're perfect every time. Recently had one of their specials- Blackened Shrimp Fettucini Alfredo. It was so tasty...and huge (I got three meals out of it).
Kitchen is open late!
Service is usually great. Every once in a while we'll get a server that's lacking in personality. But mostly everyone is friendly and attentive.
Service: our waitress was very kind and acknowledged us even though it was very busy (for 11PM on a Thursday night - NBA Finals). The food and service was a bit slow, but that's due to the crowd.
Settings: I like how neighborhood-y this place is. The seating was close, but not too crowded, TV screens everywhere and no specific demographic - just a mix of everyone.
Food: We ordered the mozzarella cheese sticks, sliders with pasta, and patty cheese melt w tots. The sweet tea is not super sweet. The cheese sticks were good but i don't normally eat cheese sticks so I don't REALLY know.
The sliders were...mm... not tasty. (If you've ever been to Firkin and Gryphon on Ashford Dunwoody, they have good sliders)... these sliders were bland all around - bun/meat/tomato slice. I liked the pasta salad (flavor was light, not mayo heavy nor vinegar heavy) and tots (crispy and hot).
My friend is a cook so his review would be for those of us who live to eat and enjoy a rush of flavor: he was not fond of the patty melt - he says they used canned mushrooms in his melt, which makes a big difference in taste. In addition, he said either they were using old oil or overcooked the tots. He also thought the pasta salad was bland.
3 Stars - for the atmosphere and the pretty good service and I don't like hurting ppl's feelings.
I work for an alcoholic beverage distributor and one of the sales reps that I work with (and whose opinion I trust) told me that he does not like to eat the food at any of his accounts except for this one.
I drive by the place frequently since it is located between my mom's neighborhood, my neighborhood, and the Tucker / Northlake Mall area (3 of my best buds are in that 'hood).
I decided to give the place a try. I went around 7pm on a Saturday and found the place buzzing with activity as the masters tournament and MLB baseball were on TV. The crowd of regulars along the bar seemed to know one another but were friendly to newcomers. I ordered a Sierra Nevada draft and perused the menu.
The menu has a good selection of items but is not over the top with variety (like many of the corporate sanitized chain taverns). I like the idea of keeping things simple and keeping the quality high; The Grove understands this concept and executes it well. I finally decided on a Southwestern Chicken sandwich with tater tots. The sandwich was well prepared and cooked to my liking. The tater tots were crispy.
Michelle A. sums it up well in her review and is exactly on the mark about the thing that makes me love the place, "There's a charm here carried over from the Oak Grove neighborhood, and the staff here is just as friendly as the neighbors you'd find outside. That alone merits this place repeat visits, but the delicious, high quality food prepped by the cooks is also what keeps me coming back for more.."
It's always just OK. What you would expect for late night bar food. Nothing great, nothing bad, just eh. They have a solid bar menu. And I like the decor on the inside; lots of rustic wood. Makes you feel cozy. Service is hit or miss, sometimes they're kinda snooty and I'm like, "What the heck do they have to be snooty about?" Want a brew and a burger at midnight, check this place out. :)
Review Source:Elevating this review for a few reasons. Â
1.) The pure sucktitude of neighboring restaurants really makes me appreciation the lack of pretentiousness and bullshit at this place. Â The Grove is consistently better and seems to have an understanding of the value of seasoning. Â
2.) Burgers are good.
3.) Onion rings vastly improved
I don't really go to this area often, so when a YELP event was being hosted nearby, the bf and I decided to give this place a shot.
I thought our server was very nice. She definitely could have checked back a little more often (both of us ran out of our beverages pretty quickly), but other than--thumbs up!
I ordered the french dip with lettuce and tomato and a side of steamed veggies. It hit my hunger spot, but left more to be desired. I thought the meat was a tad overdone and borderline dry. Thankfully there was a good amount of cheese to moisten that baby up, but if not then surely I would have entered the sahara desert. Au jus was great---savory and steaming hot, my kind of dipping condiment!
Steamed veggies tasted weird. Should have opted to sub the side with sweet potato fries. It was $.99 upgrade though...
Had the blackened shrimp caesar salad. It was good. I asked for onions and there were too many and too strong But still good. Hubby had salmon BLT with onion rings and liked it very much. Service was good and price was fair. I woul recommend it. Did have to eat a lemon quarter and 3 breath mints to restore some order to my onion tasting mouth.
Review Source:Indiana Jones would be so proud. Â
Dried-out food. Â 3rd visit. Â Maybe they use one of those food dehydrators in the kitchen or something. Â The wings were dry as a bone. Â My wife had to ask for wing sauce to try to resuscitate them. Â The carrots that came with the wings were literally so old and dried out that they looked like something Indiana Jones would have unearthed. Â I realize this is basically "bar food" but with all the food choices at this corner, I'm surprised the food is so average here. Â Owners, look, I like the idea of your restaurant. Â I love the atmosphere. Â I love the friendly wait staff. Â I love the idea of having a great neighborhood place to go watch the game. Â But seriously, you've got to start serving food who's expiration date didnt pass with Reagan still in office.
I ordered a bacon cheese burger made medium rare. When the server brought out our food, he announced my burger as "well-done." I corrected him and he took the plate back. A moment later he arrived at the table with the exact same burger claiming it was now medium-rare."
Seriously? Thanks for thinking that I am indeed that much of an idiot. I do not appreciate being lied to. I will not be coming back.
This place is super cute. Â It was recommended by my boyfriend's cousin and so we had to check it out. Â We, of course were always interested in this place because you can't help but notice all the hanging plants outside the restaurant and couldn't help but wonder if they were any good.
They have a lovely outdoor patio dining area but when we went, it was hot and humid so we asked to be seated indoors. Â The first thing I noticed was the dark wood interior, dim lighting, the bar straight ahead and the tv monitors, everywhere.
The service here is great, the food is good enough but you can't help but want to come back because it has a great, cozy vibe environment. Â You're attracted to the chill environment and it's the perfect place to relax with friends or grab a drink after work. Â The sweet potato fries are awesome and I really enjoyed my clam chowder soup. Â If you haven't already, check this place out.
It's always cool to see a yelp sticker on someone's front door. Â Tried out the yelp approved Turkey burger and sweet potato fries, minus the thousand island sauce on the burger, and both are pretty solid on flavor! Â Nice outdoor patio for seating, which is a pretty chill spot to relax and talk, or go inside and watch a game one of their several flat screens. Â I don't drink but they seemed to have a full bar and the servers are all friendly and helpful. Â
I liked this place and i'll likely catch myself here again.
Lovely day to sit on the porch! Â I enjoyed a nice hefe-weizen and chicken caesar salad. Â Chicken was freaking awesome. Â I think they deep fat fried it after the grilling. Â Bad for you but good for your tummy.
Good service and fair prices, we will be back! Â I plan to tackle the sandwich menu next time. Â They had a few good looking sandwiches on their that need to find their way into my belly.
Neat little place in Tucker that puts out some decent bar food. I ordered the buffalo chicken tenders. The buffalo sauce was not the standard hot sauce and butter. This sauce had a little something extra that had me licking the plate. The sweet potato fries were also very good.
It's very loud inside, but the patio dining was a nice choice for a little more quiet. I'm definitely going back to try a few other things on the menu.
If you find yourself hungry after an afternoon playing (oh, okay, sitting in the grass and napping) at Lullwater Park just around the corner, The Grove is a good option for an early dinner or a late lunch or an afternoon drink or a...you get the idea.
It's just solid, American bar food. Â I tried the yelp suggested turkey burger and sweet potato fries, and it was very good. Â If you like turkey burgers, this one is a winner. Â The boy liked that they had some kind of bourbon that he really likes that I can't remember the name of. Â I'll take that to mean they have a pretty good bar selection. Â
We sat on the open patio, with a view of the strip mall parking lot. Â It was a good way to end the day.
The Tucker/Northlake area is short of quality bars with a good beer selection. Sure Tucker has some bars but all of those bars allow smoking so to be able to drive up LaVista a little bit and order a quality beer and decent bar food without getting cancer is a godsend.
The patio seems nice and I hope to bring the pup up one day and chill for a while outside. Â Dog friendly places are always welcome.
The noise level on our visit was quite loud on the patio though. 3 adults and 6 kids all under 10 make a mighty racket. Nothing the Grove can do about that though. I like that there is a neighborhood spot for families and singles.
I've been here countless times, and every time the food hits the same mark. It's not Atlanta's best bar food, but it's also not your typical bar. There's a charm here carried over from the Oak Grove neighborhood, and the staff here is just as friendly as the neighbors you'd find outside. That alone merits this place repeat visits, but the delicious, high quality food prepped by the cooks is also what keeps me coming back for more. Chicken fingers, fries, burgers, sides, there isn't a bad thing I've had here yet! They're also more than happy to serve you the kids' portion of certain meals since the regular portions are often hearty.
My main complaint would be parking, which isn't really the fault of the restaurant. The little spots to eat here are just too freaking popular, but that's a GOOD thing! Just plan on looking for a spot or dining at slightly off-hours to get a space.
I have to say, the food is good. I like the atmosphere. I would not say that I am a cheap person, but I hate when restaurants and persons nickel and dime you. So, you know....
....if you ask for honey mustard, you will get charged.
....if you ask for extra ranch, you will get charged.
I'm really surprised they don't charge for ice in their drinks.
A perfect example of this, is that they don't detail that some of their sides are an extra charge. They offer numerous side items and don't detail that you will get charged a few extra dollars for a few. Who would have thought that red potatoes would be more than french fries or potato salad. They're both either boiled or fried to make it. Weird.
They've got me a few times for these things and charge you an extra dollar or two. Kind of irritating.
I've lived in the Oak Grove area nearly my whole life, so it was about time I had a meal at The Grove! It's one of the only patio-style bar/restaurants within walking distance, so it's pretty popular, especially on weekends. The crowd is pretty diverse, from young people to families.
Foodwise, it's pretty much what you'd expect from a bar and grill, but the quality is a little better than what you might expect. I ordered the Reuben, which was one of the better ones I've had.
Service can be slow sometimes, but the place is relaxing and there are lots of TVs, so it's not a big deal. Definitely a nice place to have in the neighborhood!
I've been to The Grove a few times, mostly for after-work beverages and finger food, but today I decided to grab a bite on my way home from the gym. Â I saw the sign outside for sliders (a reasonable 6.99 with fries) and went with my gut (as well as the waitress and hostess' recommendation). Â They (my gut and the two nice employees) we soooo right! Â Those sliders were better than the last burger I ate at Vortex (sorry if that's blasphemy to you ATL burger connoisseurs)!! Â Rock on, Grove.
Review Source:I used to come here a lot for dinner back in college (two years ago), but got kind of burned out. The food was ok, the drinks were ok, the service was ok... but after college I wasn't in that area much anymore so, I figured why swing by for food if it's out of my way. However... I was over there with some co-workers yesterday and that's where we had lunch.
Now - I don't know if it was because it was a late lunch or what - but it took the waitress almost 10 minutes to even realize that we were there, but once she did she was on-the-ball. Drinks came out fast, orders were taken and only a short while later did our food appear.
One co-worker ordered mild wings - which he said were pretty good. I've been lucky enough to have had the cooks special make me teriyaki wings in the past (if you ask VERY NICELY they sometimes will), and they were amazing!
The other co-worker ordered the bacon-something-burger. He said he'd had better - but he could just be spoiled/picky. I don't know. Also, I don't eat beef - so... you'll have to take someone else's word for that.
However - what I had was A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!!! I had the Turkey Burger (side of Sweet Potato Fries - also delic). I don't know if they season the turkey with something, or how the cook it... but on top of the thick, moist turkey patty is 1000 Island dressing, a slice of grilled roasted red pepper, and over all of it was melted a thick slice of Monterrey-Jack cheese. It's served on an onion roll with lettuce, tomato and onion.
Ohmygoodness - I have had A LOT of turkey burgers in my days... since it's basically the only meat that I consume... but this, by far, is my all-time favorite. Hands down, without a doubt...
I would give this restaurant 3 stars if it were not for thie burger... but it gets 4 just for creating and serving this amazing, delicious piece of magic on a place. Seriously.
Nice local restaurant, similar to Chili's quality. Â Staff is always nice and they have a great outdoor area. Â Good atmosphere.

Read the other reviews to help us find a place near Rachel P's apt for late and lazy Saturday lunch. Â We ended up on the enclosed patio despite the chill in the air, mainly so that we could have the place to ourselves. Â
Their menu had a lot of standard bar food choices. Â Bonus points for the sweet potato fries as an option. Â I had the buffalo chicken burrito - buffalo chicken, lettuce, tomato, cheese sauce in a burrito. Â Not bad for bar food, but would have preferred more buffalo sauce, since the cheese sauce was overwhelming, making it taste more like cheese dip with cholula than buffalo chicken with cheese. Â Came with chips and a teeny cup of salsa, so I had to ask for more salsa. Â Not sure if the salsa is made in house, but it had a nice chunks-to-liquid ratio for me and good smokey flavor.
Good beer selection, except that Kenny's hopes were dashed when the waitress told him that they had Sweetwater Festive, only to come back a few minutes later that they were actually out. Â I thought he might cry. Â Instead he tweeted. Â Will probably go back when in Rachel's neighborhood, but wouldn't make the drive from the westside otherwise.
This is a very friendly neighborhood pub. I moved back to Atlanta about 3 months ago after a six year stint in Athens, GA. My housemate suggested The Grove because it was close and had plenty of food and drink options and a friendly staff. I'll give my opinion on food, drink, and people:
Food: all in all, very good. The Thursday night steak special is a favorite of mine and I've yet to have a bad meal there. However, some items on the menu (which is quite extensive) are merely adequate bar food; nothing bad about it, but not going to blow you out of the water. Others, like the aforementioned steak or the homemade chicken salad, are excellent. If you don't like the first thing you try, go back and get something different. You'll eventually discover a culinary delight.
Drink: A full bar, and plenty of taps as well as a respectable wine selection. The Ménage à Trois Red is an excellent wine, and the rotating beer selection features your usual Harp, Bass, Guinness but also Smithwicks and recently Czechvar as well as some seasonal beers on draft (Warsteiner Dunkel was yummy). There is a very extensive number of bottled beers, and about 12 taps. The drinks are poured well by the very competent bar staff (not too weak, but also not too strong). You can also order shots / shooters if that is your thing. Prices are about what you'd expect for Atlanta, but they do have drink specials from time to time.
People: This is the reason I keep coming back, honestly. The staff is friendly, and not in a faux "I will smile and chat for tips" kind of way. They know their regulars, and after 3 months, it is more like hanging out with friends than going to a bar and interacting with the staff. The owner is present fairly regularly and there are numerous other regulars that make appearances (some of them daily!). That being said, the rather intimate and close camaraderie of the bar might not be for everyone. Make no mistake, if you go often enough, you will be forced to interact with not only the excellent staff, but the other patrons that frequent the establishment. For me, this is a majorly good thing; if you are a reclusive introvert, what are you doing in a bar anyway?!
Overall, I would highly encourage anyone looking for a casual bar / restaurant in the Decatur / Northlake / Toco Hills area to give The Grove a chance. You'll find yourself coming back again and again.
This place can really grow on you. Â It is low key, but busy. Â The service is consistently good and I love the veggie burgers (two types). Â It is just the type of place pretty much everyone could go and feel comfortable. Â
The only thing that, for me, can get annoying sometimes is the high intensity of the kids on the patio. Â But that is just me. Â
I really dig this place for a hang out...it just flat out grows on you.
Crazy to think that this place use to be a gas station. Â The restaurant is small and cozy with a nice outdoor area - tries to be a sports bar and a neighborhood family joint in one. Â I drive past this place everyday on my way to work and this is the first time I have eaten here. Â My wife has met her friends here a few times, but I have never seemed to make over. Â
Thinking of a different place to go, The Grove came up. Â So it was game on. Â The service was good, prompt. Â We were seated right away. Â The food is what I would call upscale bar food. Â It is on par with what you might get at Melton's App and Tap - typical menu fare, burgers, salads and chicken fingers. Decent selection on the kid's menu.
The food was ok, not the best nor was it bad. Â I could honestly say I wasn't impressed but I wasn't necessarily disappointed. Family of four, we spent less than $40 with no alcohol.
You have to understand that rating a restaurant on a five star basis is a tricky thing. Â So when you see four stars up there, what does it mean? Â I'm not one of those people who believes you compare apples to oranges on the same scale. Â So four stars does NOT mean "one notch down from the best restaurant in town" but rather "one notch down from the best restaurant of its type."
So, with that, this is a place I love and go maybe even weekly. Â What kind of a place is it: Â (a) neighborhood; (b) bar and grill; (c) not a chain; (d) sports bar ish. Â Its food is what you expect, though there are some creative flourishes beyond the normal burger and wings fare. Â The bar is well stocked with much on draft and an amazingly large selection of bottles for a place of its size. Â Good viewing angles for TV's inside, BUT probably half of the seating is outside and there aren't tv's there. Â
Staff is SUPER friendly, and knew us as return customers the 2nd time we came back. Â And you know, that kind of stuff matters. Â
It is a very family friendly place. Â So, if the prospect of kids making noise while you are out to dinner is a bother, don't come here. Â Whatever. Â To me, noise is noise and there's no difference between a loud kid yelling MOMMY and a loud fan yelling GO DAWGS or some such thing. Â
The one knock on the place, to me, is the inside seating is a litte weird. Â The bar area is crowded and the main dining area (which is not larger than the bar area) has lots of dead space. Â Kind of odd. Â
We go back a great deal of the time, and recommend it highly.
I finally decided to go out on a date with him. We decided since we were both leaving school we would meet at a midpoint between home and school. He picked The Grove and I agreed. Being that I've only driven by this place on my way to work or home I was interested in seeing the inside.
I walk in and this is a Good Ol' Fashion sports bar.
If you know me at all, taking me to a sports bar isn't a good idea because 'yes' I am like a guy and will totally tune you out, especially when I have a clear visual of 3 different weaknesses (basketball, snow boarding, and car racing).
I decided to the advice from an old thread that my favorite 'Yelper' spoke on and ordered a beer and dessert (Stella, and blueberry cheesecake). The Cheesecake was awesome, the glass that my Stella came in smelt of old socks, which turned me off from finishing my cheesecake.
The service here was mediocre, I walked in to having an overly stressed looking waitress seat me, telling me the story of how the hostess quit seconds before I entered. The waitress we originally had went AWOL and we ended up getting another girl who at times would get so involved in her dull stories that she would actually sit on the table beside ours (apparently we weren't looking bored enough).
I give this place four stars for the simple fact that I never have high hopes when it comes to the neighborhood sports bar, I will probably return for a game and a beer (but I will be sure to ask for a bottle).
The Grove is as much neighborhood hangout as it is a brew pub. You'll find all ages here in groups and solo. Early eves and weekends are the purview of families with kids young and old. If you prefer the older variety, stay near the main barroom. Heaters have appeared recently on the two outside patios. These places are enclosed by rails to keep toddlers contained but able to move around, and canine "kids" can join their parents for dinner. We have held church committee meetings here!
This is not high cuisine but the burgers fulfill that urge for comfort food accompanied by diabolical fries. The waitresses are uniformly good, and always do their best to accommodate special requests. I agree with the prior review about beer, but sure do wish they'd do something about wine - either improve the house wine or reduce the prices!
One of my favorite escapes is a late solo lunch midafternoon. It's nearly empty then and quiet (music and TVs notwithstanding) so I can spread out with my laptop and use the free WiFi to do some work over a leisurely bite. There's a reason The Grove has been full since the day it opened. It's now a neighborhood fixture!
The food at this tiny hangout is merely okay. Burgers, sandwiches, salads, baskets, that sort of bar food. Everything seems to have come from a jar or can, and the perfectly cylindrical burgers were obviously straight from a bulk freezer box. There are a bunch of big screen TVs tuned to ESPN and cable news (at least during lunch) lining the main room. Cozy wood-paneled neighborhood bar atmosphere and a nice patio.
Where it gets the extra stars is from the beer list. The draft selection is not bad, though not inspiring either, but there are some truly remarkable bottles to be found hiding out in the fridge. A bunch of English ales, such as Hobgoblin and St. Peter's ales and porter, nice west coast brews including a few Flying Dog offerings, and some Belgians, not the least of which are Duvvel and the great St. Bernardus Abt. 12. I know of no other bar in the immediate area with such a fine beer collection.
If you're a beer fan, in the Toco Hills-area neighborhood and looking for a friendly place to hang out, this is definitely a spot to try.
