Hana Yori is a dump. We've lived in the area for over 15 years and I think they've had the same carpet, decorations, and furniture since we first tried them. This restaurant could definitely use an overhaul. So, why give it 4 stars? Because, for the area, you can't beat the food and the show. (If we were somewhere else I'd only give it three stars.) Their ginger salad dressing is amazing. I always buy a jar of it to go home. What makes the meal complete, though, is the yellow egg yolk sauce they put on the shrimp. I'm pretty sure it has been known to cause heart attacks so cardiac patients beware. But it is sooooo good. Just don't overdo it. You'll regret it later!

I'm really not a fan of Hanayori and hadn't been there in quite some time, but went in with an open mind as we were meeting friends there to celebrate a birthday (birthday boy's restaurant pick).

The restaurant is dated and service is so-so.  There are definitely beter Hibachi places to go.

The offer a full bar, but a very poor wine selection.

I ordered the steak which the menu compares to Kobe - NOT!  The included shrimp appetizer was a few pieces of chopped shrimp coated in the gloppy egg yolk sauce.  I know some people (including several at our table) love the stuff, but it is not even remotely appealing to me (not a good indicator when they have a sign posted that it may upset your stomach!).

The salad with ginger dressing is good and I do like the side sauces they serve with the meal (a mustard and soy ginger sauce).

The vegetables and fried rice were cooked well, but so incredibly greasy.  The steak was fine and cooked a nice medium as requested, but also very greasy.

You will leave the restaurant with that lingering, greasy smell.

Don't let the shabby decor fool you, Hanayori knows how to do hibachi! I'm a huge fan of hibachi, and have been to quite a few different locations...and I have to say Hanayori does it best. They have the most legit chefs I have ever seen --no poorly-trained people here. Their food is full of flavor, and their chefs know how to time everything out to balance the meal well. They're also not overly chatty --which I like.

As far as service goes: the hostess is a little rough around the edges, and the waitress on my most recent trip was HORRIBLE. I'm talking, no common sense talking down to us horrible. I have never been one to forgo tipping, however, this night out was the first time I did not leave a tip for a server.

Hanayori --PLEASE UP YOUR SERVE ANTE.

This is one of my favorite restaurants in the Michiana area! Nothing beats the shrimp with egg yolk sauce! I have always had a great meal here and have been entertained by the skilled chefs. Pricing is pretty reasonable too.  The only thing holding me back from giving them a full five stars is because I really think it is time for them to update their decor.

Pretty good experience overall, and I'd have to say Hibachi type Japanese grills aren't my favorite thing, but the food was good(I had the scallops), the show was what was to be expected, and the environment was fine.

Now the service was a bit sub par, they were quick on drinks but we went on a Sunday evening and we all kind of felt....rushed/pressured to leave, and I kid you not, when one of our company stood up to stretch when we were just starting to collect coats and make like leaving, some server came by and snagged his chair from behind him(our friend had been the only person standing).  Not a criminal offense but it seemed very rude to me....maybe I'm old fashioned.

Similar to Ron of Japan, but less expensive.  The restaurant seemed a bit dated...older chairs, carpeting, etc.  The portions were not as large as Ron's.  However, the tase was really good and we loved the prices, especially since our son is starting to order from the adult menu and loves lobster.  Both of our kids enjoyed the fish pond from the bridge over it.

Best restaurant in the city. Good entertainment, good food, decently priced.

I don't understand why this restaurant is four and half stars.  For me, it's barely one star.

We made a 5:30pm reservation and came in about 25 minutes early, when the restaurant was nearly empty.  As we waited to be seated, the lady at the door consistently glared at us, saying "just a minute, just a minute" while she seated people who came after us.  After ten minutes of waiting in a nearly empty restaurant, we were finally led to our table, all with a frown from the lady at the front door.

While the Teppanyaki chef did put on a above mediocre show and our waitress was quite friendly, there was not much more to enjoy at our meal.  The vegetables were nothing more than sauce.  The fried rice was nearly tasteless: one of the worst fried rice I have ever had, and fried rice is something I order almost everywhere.  The sushi was a far cry from fresh: the rice was too dense and sticky, the pieces were tiny, the fish was scant, and I could barely taste the caviar in my salmon roe maki.  At least the chicken was quite tender and edible.

It is not at all authentic; Americanized Japanese food slathered in butter.  That $50 spent could have been used to buy so many better things.  Like cooking a week's worth of my own Teppanyaki on my griddle at home.

Great foood and show. The shrimp sauce, lobster, and steak meals are my favorites. The vegetables are amazing also. The chef's are friendly and fun. Make sure to make reservations.

This place is excellent and there is no other hibachi grill like Hana Yori.  The chefs and service staff are personable and very friendly.  I frequented this place about every other week when I was pregnant.  The yumyum sauce (egg yolk sauce) is amazing, always got extra for my rice and steak.  Can't wait to go back again!

As of Japan, they always get better! Best food, Best service, and best grill !
Good food such as shrimp with egg yoke and chicken or rice. As of starting a grill from a regular grill turns to FIRE! Great cook for the talking and some jokes get better! If you make reservations, you will have to come to the exact same time for your table. And for your B-day, you get a lemon cake! REALLY GOOD! If you like this place, then you should come.

Hanayori is really yummy and they always have great service!

It isn't as pricey as other asian places around here so you are really getting your money's worth.

Note: Sushi is only available during dinner house.  Don't know why that is but if you are going for sushi, make sure you go in the evening! :)

My search for a good Japanese steak house in Michiana will have to continue after my night out at Hanayori.

We loved the set up.  The prices were what you would expect for a Japanese steak house.  And the first two courses, your traditional JS chicken broth soup and salad with ginger dressing were very promising.  That is where the promise took a nose dive.  First of all what the hell is up with the flavorless cheeze whiz looking stuff they glopped on the shrimp?  I was really hoping it was some kind of butter sauce that would melt down, but when he lifted the lid back up and started to serve them with that junk I was very scared.  I tried it and just found it to be like eating flavorless shortening you use for baking, no thank you.

As for the rest of the meal the veggies and rice lacked flavor in my opinion, I guess I am just used to there being some teriyaki flavor to my meal from past experiences at different Japanese steak houses.  The steak was well cooked to my liking and was very tender, but also lacked any of that familiar Japanese steak house flavor.

The reason they get three stars is for the chef and wait staff.  The chef was very entertaining, sometimes they just go through the motions, but this guy was very friendly and put on a good show while joking around with us.  The waitress kept the drinks full and was prompt.  If it wasn't for those two they would not be getting more than 1 star.

Similar in style to other teppan yaki restaurants, but better quality food than Benihana or Ron of Japan (Chicago). The shrimp and egg yolk appetizer is rich and artery clogging and delicious! If you're considering red meat, spend a few extra $ for the filet. Great place for a small group dinner. If you make reservations, it's also a great place to go after an ND football game.

This place is like Benihana.  If you are familiar with Benihana then you know that food is prepared right at the table "teppan-yaki" style (teppan meaning "steel grill" and yaki meaning "broiled") with dazzling effects by highly trained chefs.  The perform cool tricks with the food as they cook with great skill and attempt to make you laugh with a bit of stand up comedy.

I have been going here since the late 80's and will remain one of my favorites.  I moved away from here in the mid nineties and tried to find a steakhouse that could compare to them but could not.  The majority of chefs there are good as well as entertaining.  I can do without the sometimes rudeness of the hostess, but I've basicly come to expect it to get awesome food.

Hana Yori is kind of awesomely stuck in time.  They opened in 1987 and I don't think the decor or menu has changed since then.

I remember going here in high school for special dinners before school dances or after big events.  The teppanyaki-style Japanese cuisine was something "new" and different, and provided dinner AND a show in one.

I recently dined here for the first time in about 10 years with my brother and his gf over a Christmas trip home.  We walked into a time capsule and were told that the wait was about 20 minutes for a Saturday night.  We decided to enter the saloon doors to the teeny-tiny bar and order up some sake and Sapporos while we waited.  There is a mini sushi bar back here too; I think that's the newest addition (probably 10 years ago).  I felt like I was in a movie - an old TV was bolted to the wall and fuzzed its way through an ancient Christmas movie, the ambient music was some crooner singing Christmas songs and there was a plastic tree from the 80's sitting in the corner flashing its colorful lights epileptically.  It was strangely comforting.

We were soon whisked away to our communal table to decide what kind of meat or seafood we wanted cooked up right in front of us.  The other patrons at our table were seriously midwestern and took photos of the chef while he balanced eggs on spatulas and flipped shrimp tails into his hat.  Each entree comes with a ton of extras - iceberg salad swimming in ginger dressing, miso soup (NOM), shrimp smothered in egg yolk sauce (let's be honest and call it "cholesterol sauce"), and tons of fried rice and stir fry vegetables.  The chicken, steak, and shrimp are always good and the chefs do a good job cooking the food to order.  After all, they are making it right in front of you, they better not screw up!  I could do without so much of the egg yolk sauce, but the ginger and peanut dipping sauces are awesome with the meat and veg.

I always come out of here full and happy - and smelling strongly of Japanese food.
