This stop at Hannah's, not too far off I-5, provided the most eclectic patronage I've yet seen in there. Â That's a neutral statement. Â It may be Olympia, home of funky Evergreen State College, but it has been more sedate at Hannah's on past visits.
So, back to the pluses: Â an incredible mushroom Swiss cheese burger with lettuce, tomato, pickles, and some type of burger sauce, heaps of big french fries, and a Coke, for under $10. Â Also, the service was, as usual, very friendly and accommodating.
Stopped in for a quick drink on a Saturday afternoon, and the place was deserted! The atmosphere was definitely not what I expected. From the outside it definitely looks like a dingy/dirty dive bar, but inside is actually still just a nice and relaxed bar. Not dingy at all. Definitely points earned for being a low-key place when you're not wanting a crowd. Bartender was courteous enough. A couple good beers on tap. Not a place I'd go for a date or to show visitors the best that Olympia has to offer, but definitely has its place in the roster.
From the other reviews and what I saw when I was in there, the food might actually be worth a try. I will also probably be back sometime for the Saturday pool tournaments.
This update to my review is for their "revised," Happy Hour. Â Soon after the privatization of the liquor industry Hannah's changed their HH. Â Prior, you would grab a pull tab pc. out of a beer pitcher and your discount would be revealed. Â The discounts ranged from half off to specific monetary amounts deducted from your beverage price. Â They now have scratch off tabs and almost all the time you scratch off full price. Â Getting any discount has been almost taken away, therefore Hannah's you need to quit having happy hour. Â We stopped in yesterday and between us we had 4 drinks, all full price. Â We were not happy (again) at your happy hour. Although we like Hannah's in general we can't continue to support a business that is deceitful by saying they have a "Happy Hour," when you really don't. Â There are much better options all around you and we will frequent those places and take you off our radar. Â Feel bad for your employees.
Review Source:Less of a line for Karaoke on Saturday nights than there is at the Clipper, also a WAY different vibe (less divey and loud, more sports bar feeling). I love the art nouveau on the walls, and the stars on the ceiling. I was very tempted by the pull tabs, got trapped in a lock and chain bathroom, and succumbed to the lure of a shooting game that had a dollar already in it. Another dollar was added, and my friend and I woozily shot our drunk little hearts out.
I was done drinking by the time our crawl got here, so I can't give you an opinion on drink prices/serving, but overall, I'm glad I stopped by Hannah's. I'll try again sometime!
We had a buy one (up to 8.00) get one free coupon, so after reading the reviews here, we went to try the burgers. We each got a bacon cheeseburger with fries, and I must say...yummeh!
Lots of cheese and bacon and goop and toppings on the burgers. They were really good.
The atmosphere was a bit strange. We had no idea what to do when we walked in. (We aren't good bar people.)
So, for any newbies: Just walk in, savor the "carpet has probably been saturated with beer many times over" smell, which I kind of liked, sit anywhere you want, and you might then have to go up to the bar and ask if they're serving food and if you can have some menus. When he gives you the menus, just point out to him where you are sitting. If it's anything like when we went, we got EXCELLENT service by the bartender (a very nice, tall, slim man). He was very attentive and very friendly.
P.S. Â We got out BOGO coupon from the Entertainment Book.
Some of the people in there were a bit odd, but this *is* Olympia, so...no biggie. No one bothered us, other than one woman playing pool. Every time she walked by, we got to endure a B.O. attack. Again, no biggie.
One really gets the feeling there's something dodgy going on in the back rooms, but perhaps that's just me. Â The fried things seem to be the usual Cash 'n' Carry varieties that will neither wow nor disappoint if you're expecting bar food. Â Friendly staff, which is nice.
I always assumed it was a crappier place than it turns out to be. Â The windows are dark, but the interior isn't overwhelmingly-so. Â There's pull tabs, and the atmosphere is rather less chic than you might get from most other places downtown; it's very Washington in a way that can be nice but a little uncomfortable if you're a weirdo like me. Â But that seems to totally be my projections and my discomfort and nothing to do with the place. Â It's cozy and friendly, at least so long as it's not busy.
The highlight for me is the pool tables, which are pretty standard return models like you'll find in most bars, and although the felt is pretty beat up, they seem to be better cared-for than some of the nicer tables around town. Â The cues are straight and solid, which is certainly not true of, say, the Spar. Â It's free all week until 3pm and all day Sunday, too, which is really nice. Â Just two tables, and kind of close to the booths, but nice to play on all the same, and that's really saying something.
went for open mic tonight. Â Waitress gouged me $11 for a Stoli Martini which was light on content, while she poured her pals very tall Jamesons.... I didn't tip her and circled the $11 on my bill and wrote "B.S." next to it. Â She threw a rack of gasses down the counter and raged that it wasn't her fault for the charge. Â I told her no one else in olympia charged that much for that drink... she called the bouncer to throw me out.
No problem. Â I won't be back. Â Maybe you get big cheap drinks if you hang around long enough and tip well. Â That's kinda cart before the horse to me...
This bar was the first place in went in Olympia when I moved there by myself in 2010. Â The bartenders were really nice and friendly and I ended up meeting a whole group of friends from hanging out with them and other people I met at Hannah's. Â One good thing is they actually have good burgers to go with your beverage of choice. Â The bartenders are actually good bartenders who can go beyond just pouring beer and simple mixed drinks. Â This place may not always be the craziest party in town, but it is a great neighborhood type bar and a good place to hang out with friends or make new ones.
Review Source:I'm going to be honest here. The only reason I've ever stepped foot in this bar is because someone else made me! But I have yet to regret it.
Reasons that make the night worthwhile at Hannah's:
JUKEBOOXXXXXXX - I've put way too much money in this thing. I just love playing disco when the only people around are popped collar pool sharks.
Whipped Cream Vodka - I feel like not a lot of places have this stuff. Or if they do, they just don't know how to use it.
Pull Tabs - Yup. Where I come from, these things don't exist so you can imagine my excitement when they're in the building!
Kareoke - I don't recall what nights this happens but if you like being able to actually get a turn in, skipping the clipper is a safe bet. However, the crowd that swivels in chairs here isn't known for its great taste in sing-a-long jams. I heard nirvana, tool and puddle of mudd in one night. Depression soon set in.
All in all, come here if you like it divey. Stay clear if you're too darn classy.
This is my type of dive bar. Super cheap drinks, great live band, and a salty bartender who calls you on your shit.
I came here for my last night in town, with 90 minutes to get incredibly drunk. The bartender made sure I succeeded. She kept us going with pints of micros, gin and tonics, and shots.
Loved the live cover band and all the crazy people who were just jamming out. Wish they wouldn't have switched the rap trio at the end, but what can you do?
Great place to relax and enjoy a couple beers after a long day...
I can't believe I haven't reviewed them before. This is a decent place to go for a reasonably priced lunch in downtown Olympia. Yesterday I went there for a Bacon Cheese Burger and fries. I drank water cause I'm cheap. The burger came with all the works. My food came to $6.50 and I gave Jack a $2 tip. Service can sometimes be slow but for the most part this place is empty at lunch so it usually is not an issue. The menu is basic but good.
Review Source:So they've decided to add karaoke to the weekend mix, which totally kills the vibe for me. Sorry all you William Hung wannabes, but I don't know if I've ever heard worse singing. Well maybe my own but I don't inflict it on others. I couldn't down my beer fast enough.
In a nutshell, painful and off my list of regular stops.
Dammit now THAT's a burger. Â A few of us stopped in on a Monday afternoon - our first visit. Â A clean, orderly joint with a reasonable amount of tavern-anywhere-USA character. Â Extraordinarily comfortable booths. Â There was one guy working the bar, very friendly. Â And the burgers he whipped up... excellent. Â Okay maybe "whipped up" is a stretch. Â It actually took awhile. Â But it was worth the wait! Â Fixins, fixins, fixins! Â The green chili burger is verrrry tasty. Â
The bacon on the burger at Hannah's is not as good as the bacon on the burger at Ben Moore's. Â However, the burger in its entirety blows Ben's away. Â Stop by Ben's. Â Order bacon. Â Put it in your pocket. Â Cross the parking lot to Hannah's. Â Order cheeseburger. Â Insert bacon. Â Reach burger heaven. Â If Ben and Hannah had a baby... a burger baby... who would it look like? Â Decent beer selection, full bar. Â We'll be back.
When I turned 21 back in the late 90's this was the first bar I ever went to. Back then it still had a little biker in it. By little biker I don't mean a midget wearing leather chaps sitting in the corner on a Harley with an I Heart Mom tattoo, but it possessed the attitude of the biker bar it used to be. It was dodgy and tough. I sat at the bar wrapped in a flannel hunching over a warm bowl of cashews, sipping my beer and attempting to make as little eye contact as possible for fear of being eaten. Even though I feared for my life I enjoyed myself and would stop in occasionally.
I didn't start frequenting Hannah's though until I worked downtown about 7 years later. The bar had become more of a preppy hangout which was weird and actually slightly scarier. My friends and I would grab lunch here weekly for they had good burgers and decent, timely service.
However in the last year that has all changed. Their service has dropped dramatically from decent to craptastic. The last two times I have been in there I have waited ten minutes or more for service with just a hand full of people in the bar so I have walked out. The time before those it took 30 minutes for mozzarella sticks, again, with less than ten people in the bar. Um last time I checked you take said frozen breaded cheese twigs out of a carton and drop them in hot oil for 5 minutes or less. Voila!!! Fried cheese for everyone! All I am saying is if they needed to milk the cow first and cut the curds they should have put that on the menu.
Each time there have been two workers who seem to lack the multitasking skills necessary to work at a bar. Seriously in this economy you would think Hannah's would be able to hire somebody with an iota of customer service experience.
If I had reviewed Hannah's a couple years ago I would have given them 3 to 4 stars but now I feel the only reason they deserve a star is for the funny fact that they did not allow Christine Gregoire in because she didn't have her I.D.on her. I am done with Hannah's and will stick with the 4th Ave or Ben Moore's if I am downtown and in need of some grub with my booze.
Hannah's is every neighborhood bar you've ever been to. Cheap drinks, down to earth bartenders and enough local color to keep things interesting.
Karaoke night is a little rough on the ears but I've still sat through it for several hours on two different occasions.
I haven't eaten the food yet but I'm always there late and have only really seen huge plates of fries being passed across the bar.
Drink selection is surprisingly awesome. Lots of good "top shelf" minus the top shelf price.
Bartenders are always very friendly and when they aren't running around they are good for a chat.
A diamond in the rough for Olympians.
Crazy packed on Fri. & Sat. Waited so long for my drinks while standing in line that we left. Only best thing is the free pool all day on Sundays, except there is only one pool table. It's a pretty small and laid back bar. Cool place to hang out on a quiet chilled Sunday PM with friends.
