I went to Hanson's about a week ago on a Wednesday night for a charity event.
The service was okay, but the food was amazing! I ordered the medium rare prime rib, which was $15 for an 8oz. My fiance got the meatball sandwich. Both meals were cooked perfectly and had great flavor to them. The part of the meal that was super amazing was the brownie sundae. I was full, but that brownie was soft and warm, and the brownie combined with the ice cream was just an explosion on our taste buds!
I will definitely be coming back here for dinner again!
We live in the neighborhood and we have been coming to Hanson's for years, usually to grab a few drinks with friends. They have decent burgers and a nice patio out back, but the owner must have something against children, because she was openly mean to us. The hostess, the server and the bartender all apologized on her behalf, and we appreciate that, but we don't want to eat anywhere our kids are not welcome.
There are so many other great options on south Pearl that there is no reason to eat at Hanson's. Go a few blocks further down the street and there are some truly great restaurants.
We went to Hanson's Saturday afternoon (St. Patty's weekend); the bar area was half full and the same for the restaurant. Â I sat at the bar for 10mins, with NO acknowledgement from the bartender...... Â Great indication for me to walk out..... Â This bar is our my banned list...... Â I would give negative one star if possible....
Review Source:Hanson's is a neighborhood institution, but kind of like that really pretty house in your neighborhood that used to be beautiful, but they let it go a little bit and it needs paint and a new porch and and and...
The bar is good and has good selection. The food (I'm a vegetarian) is pretty meh. 2 1/2 to 3 stars. Not much selection if you don't eat meat. I'd bet they have good burgers buuuuut I can't eat them. So what they do have for me is a lot of deep fried stuff- fish and chips, fries, I think fried mozzarella, and its all ok but not something I would get in the car and go out of my way for.
The decor/ambiance needs an update. It's dark, and a little old and cheesy inside.
The Hornet has similar food, but its better and fresher and has more variety, better beers and a nicer space. Also, a few blocks down Pearl word has it 'The Tavern' is opening. I think Hanson's needs to put in work, or it won't be around for a review in 2014.
Stopped in on a Monday night and I couldn't believe how packed the place was! THAT'S a good sign, right? Â And it's on Pearl Street so you wanna Love it! Â I had a Travelzoo deal and I should say now that I won't be buying those anymore. Â Only about 1 out of 5 works out. Â I'll use up what I've got and reaffirm my belief that there's no such thing as a 'good' deal.
The food here is ok, it's pub food. Â I made the mistake of ordering a sirloin (I was trying to get the value out of the Travelzoo). I asked for it rare. Â It came out well beyond done. Â I asked our waitress if I had ordered it rare and her reply "you did and I put the ticket in medium rare". Â I asked her Why she'd do that but she didn't offer a reason but did offer to have a new plate brought out. Â That's nice but NO. Â In the end I didn't touch my entree, not even the sides.
It was pretty busy and they seemed understaffed for the night. Our waitress was obviously overwhelmed, the kitchen helper actually brought our appetizers and entrees out to our table. Â That's all ok and the place is ok but that's it. Â Oh, and their beer selection on tap was limited to about 5 which included Coors Lite ...you can name the rest.
I just downloaded this app to my phone called Mint which tracks your finances and everything. Â It's pretty handy, but here's one of the first things it said in the "advice" section. Â "You eat out a lot." Â Well yeah, I'm single and who likes to cook for themself and eat the leftovers for a week?
Now that that tangent is out of the way...stopped in with a friend the other night for some grub before what was supposed to be some intense FIFA damage to my ego at his place. Â For some odd reason, I was feeling healthy, so I rolled with the chicken garlic kabobs with spinach rice. Â He opted for the French Onion Soup and some kind of wings, which he declared to be really good. (he's so much more healthy than me!) Â The kabobs were good, everything was seasoned well and cooked just right. Â The rice with huge leaves of sauteed spinach (or whatever that leafy veggie was) was kinda ew. Â I don't like having half a wilted spinach leave hanging out of my mouth, so it might have been better in this humble non-food critics opinion to slice or tear up the leaves just a tad?
Overall atmosphere is well, bar-ry. Â It's big, they've got some TVs floating around the place, prices are a bit more expensive for "bar food," but the food's decent quality for "bar food" as well. Â Not a bad place if you're in the hood.
We have lived in the community for many years and tried Hansons after the new chef and the food was AMAZING!!! Do yourself a favor, go have anything on the menu, its incredibly good. Thus far I've had the prime rib (sooooo good. beats teds hands down) and the Louisiana salad which, for a fat kid who hates sald, was gone in 10 minutes!!!
Review Source:I have come to Hanson's over the years for many occasions. Â I have spent many a happy hour upstairs and downstairs as well. Â I like the vibe of the place in general. Â
I won't review the food because we all know it's good. Â I don't think I have ever had a bad anything here. Â All the dishes are solid and served consistantly wonderful.
It's not a chain sports bar, it's kind of low key and a great place to meet friends for a basically quiet evening if you want it to be. Â You can also go upstairs and shoot a few games of pool, listen to the group who brings their guitars and plays upstairs occasionally and just chill maybe on one of the couches. Â I actually saw someone who had a bit to much catching a snooze on one of them recently. Â
On my most recent visit I met Jen and Una, they are regulars there so stop in and say hi to the girls and have a drink. Â You will beglad you did.
This is a great little neighborhood pub. While the food is typical bar fare (wings, nachos, other munchies, sandwiches and burgers), I really like the ambiance of this place. It's dark, and a little dingy, but no matter where you are, it's easy to feel like your group of people are the only one's there. Part of this is it's central location (for me, anyways), which is easy to meet my friends at. Also, got to love the drink specials!
Review Source:It felt like a neighborhood bar. The trouble is, I was there for a meal with the family. They sat us in the dining area in the back, that was so dimly lit, I couldn't read the menu. The service was friendly, but slow and unprofessional. Everyone in my party, including me, found the food to be ok. I'd say it tasted like something you'd get at Chillis.
Review Source:This place has a look of a bar on the outside and a tavern on the inside - if you know what I mean :) I guess, it is just a lot warmer than the exterior projects from the street.
We came here for dinner with family and friends. Â It was a fairly big party so we reserved a table. Â It was really packed on Saturday night so if you have more than a few people you might want to do this too. Â
I thought the service was slow, but we were there to chat so it didn't really hurt the experience (although it was slow enough to notice). The food was good although I think everyone ordered better than I did! Â
We got meatloaf (it has ham it it - which seems odd, but was told was good), fired chicken (with a touch of honey - another thumbs up), Cajun pasta (apparently one of their specialties), steak, fish and chips and I ordered a blackened chicken sandwich with onion rings (rings rocked). Overall, everyone liked their food. I thought my sandwich was surprisingly bland (needed more of everything!). Â Still it wasn't bad! Â We ended with the cobbler, which was out of this world (big warm bowl spilling over with gooey apples, crust, ice cream and whipped cream). Â
Also, just note that they have a small lot to the side of the building, otherwise it will be street parking. Â
I would recommend it, if you want a laid back tavern like environment.
We came on a Saturday with a party of six, and thankfully one of the bunch thought to call and reserve a table, which always seems weird at a bar, but it definitely worked!
There was no one at the hostess table when the wife and I arrived, and there continued to be no one there for about 10 minutes. Our party had apparently already arrived and by the time we were noticed the hostess was just like "Oh, they're in the back room" and waved us in the general direction, so we were still kinda lost. But eventually we found our party.
Again, the waiter was slow taking our initial drink order and the food order (and it seemed forever for the food to come out), but since we were meeting up with friends and family it didn't seem as big of a deal (especially after the beer started flowing).
We split some appetizers (I tried the calamari, which was spicy and yummy), and then I had the fried chicken. It didn't blow me away, but it was good. Then the wife and I split some apple cobbler for dessert and it was warm and gooey and just great. Honestly it made the last star in the review for me.
Sweet potato fries were some of the best I've ever had (overpriced, but worth it), onion rings were pretty good (a bit too much batter for my taste, but my sister said she loved them!), and the beer selection was solid. I had the grilled apple and walnut salad (pick a different dressing - the maple one is SUPER sweet), which was solid. My aunt said her veggie wrap was good, too.
Overall, I'd say it's not a bad choice if you're in the neighborhood, but it wouldn't be my first choice.
I had never heard of this place until it was suggested by a friend to meet up here and sit outside. Â When I walked inside I didn't even KNOW there was an outside!! Â It's blocked in by a super tall fence and has tons of trees and shrubbery so you don't feel like you are right next to another business or street. Â The back patio basically ROCKED.
Service was stellar (it was a week night and it was pretty empty but she could have forgotten about us and she didn't). Â Good list of HH specials, good beers.
i had the chicken nachos. Â Tomatoes seemed fresh, chicken was well seasoned. Â I'd eat it again.
Casual "pub" feel inside and out. Â I'll definitely come back!
All too often in the big city life it's hard to find a cozy neighborhood restaurant. Not trendy, not packed with a line out the door, not trying to be a rock star - just cozy and tasty. That's what I like about Hanson's, it just makes you feel warm and welcomed, whether you want a meal or just a drink at the bar.
And the food is very good too. The prime rib special on Saturdays may not give you the best prime rib of your life, but for the price it's massive and darn tasty. I've also had their french dip sandwich, which was melt-in-your-mouth delicious. It's perfect on a Sunday afternoon for lunch, as they likely use prime rib from Saturday night's special. It was so tender and juicy...I need to stop thinking about it because otherwise I'm going to go to bed upset I didn't have one for dinner tonight. Lastly, my brother found their green chili soup so good that he went back the next day to have another bowl.
Whatever your mood might be, Hanson's is a good choice to relax and have a meal and/or drink. Although when you walk in the bar may seem a little lively depending on the day and time, the rest of the restaurant is nicely situated away from it for a quieter dinning experience.
I recently went back to Hanson's as part of a group of 8. Not only were they able to seat us fairly quickly on a Friday night (around 20 minutes) our server was awesome at handling our table, getting everyone drinks and food in a very quick fashion.
Just like last time the food I ordered was good (good for bar food, mind you) and I had a different salad (this one with dates, goat cheese, cornbread croutons, and other assorted salad accoutrements) and a starter of wings (which you can get plain, hot, or teriyaki and they come with all drumsticks.)
One other thing I had the opportunity to experience this trip around was the upstairs bar. It's a lovely space with comfy couches and chairs scattered about so if you are in the neighborhood for a drink only you should see if there is any seating up there available to you.
What I had?  Chicken Fried Steak (Beer battered cubed steak with smashed potatoes, sautéed veggies and topped in country gravy)
Food review: Â I get pretty nervous when I go to places with large menus. Â I always get the feeling that with all those choices, the quality of all most all the choices can't be that great. Â This was certainly not the case with my first try at Hansons. Â I haven't had fried steak in quite a while so it sounded good. Â I have to say that this was one of the tastiest fried steak's I've had in quite some time. Â I think the gravy had little bits of sausage and even without it the gravy was just about perfect. Â On the side were some mashed potatoes and sauteed mushrooms and green beans which were good. Â Holy cow though.. granted I haven't had chicken fried steak in quite some time but this might have been the best I've had in town.
Service? No complaints
This place is great!
The besties and I were looking for a good neighborhood bar to hang out at this Saturday, and came across Hanson's on Yelp. We were really just looking for a place with burgers and beer, and weren't expecting anything too special.
It was late night happy hour, so my Sierra Nevada only cost me $3 (like!). One of my friends got a cheeseburger with sweet potato fries which she loved every bit of, the other got the sliders, which he claimed were great as well, and I got the barbecue wings. They were fantastic! Meaty, saucy, crispy, yum! And the service was great, if not just a wee bit overzealous. I especially enjoyed that it wasn't packed on a Saturday night, as I'm not one for crowds.
I can definitely see myself going back here.
Had a good $7 burger on $4 burger night. Â The nickel and dime menu that allows you to cobble together your own meaty concoction is a cool idea that works on its own merits. Â No need to lie to me by pretending I'll be walking out of there only four singles lighter.
I ended up getting a $4 medium rare burger with $1 bleu cheese and $2 sweet potato fries. Â When all was said and done, it cost just a wee bit less than what it would have at any burger joint. Â I suggest scrapping the misnomer. Â The burgers can stay exactly the same and I'd make a return trip.
I've been here only on Tuesdays for the $5 burger night. Tuesdays are always busy but service is still quick and attentive - Win in my book. The happy hour appetizer delas are also great - we love the giant plate of nachos for only $5.
I love the beer selection here as well - lots of great beers on tap and also in bottles to choose from. They've also got $2.75 Bud Light deals.
This bar is a fun, relaxed atmosphere that make it a great spot to meet friends after work and relax. The earlier you arrive, the better- seating in the bar area is a bit limited and goes fast.
Also note that parking is limited in this area - I think there's a small lot in the back (always full) so street parking is the way to go. Since it's in a neighborhood with other restaurants nearby, it usually takes me about 10 or so minutes to find a spot on the street. Not too bad but something to factor in to your expectations!
This cute corner cafe and bar has a lot going for it in the ambiance department, and the neighborhood must love this place because it was packed on a Wednesday night.
That said, we had a miserable experience and the food was unbearably bad. I had a chicken club on a big monolithic and stale chunk of ciabata that stood over the sandwhich like an ice burg over the Titanic. The chicken "breast" was ridiculously thin as was the bacon.
My wife had "the worst French onion soup" she's ever had, followed by an iffy "tasteless" burger. We had to chase down our server constantly, extrapolating the already miserable experience into a marathon of disappointment.
We'll never come back.
Hello my name is Suzy and I am a cheeseburger/fry-aholic. Â I've eaten whatever I want whenever I want for the past 44 years and it's starting to show. Â With a closet full of jeans that I can't even dream of wearing again, I've finally faced the fact that it's time to eat something green a little more often. Â
Since I never bothered to learn to cook, the quest for restaurants with good salads has been on for the past two months. Â My favorite place to go is Hanson's, as they have a large selection of GREAT salads. Â Who would have ever thought that an irish pub would have healthy grub?? Â The chicken oriental and their wedge are my favorite. Â Though the noodles in the first and bacon on the second drop the heathy bit a notch, it's still a lot healthier than I've ever been, and it's DAMN TASTY! Back in the day of greasy cheeseburgers and fries, I remember Hanson's doing a good job there too. Â
Service is interesting, though it's never been bad for me. Â I find they are in the middle of being a chill bar, but are also trying to be upscale so the staff fluctuates between the two and it's a little awkward for everyone. Â
In the past 2 months I've eaten here about 10 times and look forward to the next 10 meals there! Â I wonder if they have a frequent diner punch card!
I am a huge fan of Hanson's. Â I pop in there regularly for some of Denver's very best bar grub.
The Menu is broad and unique. Â They offer several options that are off the beaten path including fish dishes, awesome salads, interesting entrees, delicious pastas and specials. Â All the food is very fresh. Â The portions are generous.
The bar area has televisions for Sports viewing, although they do not offer audio for most events. Â I usually choose the pleasant dining area. Â My kids like to go to Hanson's. Â My wife does, too,. Â She's a veg and pretty choosy, so the fact that she likes to go there is high praise. Â When she's happy I am happy.
I took the young ones there tonight (gave the wife some quiet time). Â Kids eat free from 5pm to 10pm on Sundays. Â
My Reuben was a bit of a disappointment. Â I would have expected more from Hanson's. Â It was kind of dry and boring. Â My fries were moderately undercooked, also. Â My daughter had a Kid's Turkey and Cheese which was very good. Â I ate half of it :). Â The turkey was so smoky and juicy. Â YUM. Â My son had a grilled cheese and fries. Â I assume it was good, too, because it disappeared pretty quickly. Â
The highlight for us was the delicious hot fudge Sunday the kiddoes split after dinner. Â
Our server was very attentive and friendly which is par for the course. Â The service is WONDERFUL at Hanson's.
Terrific Tavern
You won't find many other places that have such high quality food and drink together. Great menu with lots of choices. My favorites: Buffalo Wings, Any Salad, Prime Rib (Thursday-Sunday only).
What's really great about this place is the diversity- take a kid, a grandparent, swill cocktails with your best buds, watch the game, play pool or sit out on the deck with your co-workers and talk smack about the office. Â It's all good here (and I've tried it all with the exception of the grandparent).
Note, if you sit in the front near the bar, you'll be treated more like a bar patron. We've gone with big groups and had excellent service from patient staff who will put up with splitting the bill 14 ways.
.
I am glad this is nearby my neighborhood.  I really like the food here.  I was torn tonight between the cucumber dill salmon and the Louisiana Station Salad, I wasn't overly hungry, so I went with the salad and I'm so glad I did, it was great.  There could have been more greens tho.  The salad had roasted chicken instead of grilled chicken, and it was awesome. The chicken was so tender and moist.  I also had the charred jalapeño vinaigrette which kicked the salad up a notch.  I thoroughly enjoyed it.
We've enjoyed happy hour and apps here more than once, tonight was the first time we actually ate dinner. Â I want to go back. Â There was so much to choose from. Â My friends were having a tough time deciding what they wanted just like I did, and we were joking that they had it narrowed down to page 2 and 3!
This place has the creamiest shrimp alfredo dish I've had in a very long time. It's not very often that I eat everything on my plate. I even devoured my veggies - zucchini, carrots and all! You can get half-orders on almost everything, too, which is great for a light snacker like me.
Not to mention the Tavern's groovy second floor that reminds you faintly of a cozy winter condo.
Also loved the hot coffee drinks with swirls of Kahlua and the friendly bartender. Definitely coming back for another evening of political enlightenment with my best friends.
Unfortunately, this is the first poor rating I have given any establishment and believe me I would rather not...
I visited this place with a friend of mine and she lives in the neighborhood. Â She sat at a booth right by the bar area while I finished up a conversation outside. Â I know I was on the phone for about 10+minutes from the time she walked in. Â After wrapping up the call, I came in a sat down to notice she had no drink, not even water. Â I asked if she had been greeted at all and NO-GO on that either.
The bar was not busy in the least and there seemed to be adequate servers there as well.
Sometimes, I would elect to call attention to someone, but we decided to leave. Â On the way out, no salutation even at that point. Â That was a bit disappointing because as I was coming in from my finishing my phone call, the couple leaving was sent off in a spirited manner...
Definitely not a good impression.
I'm still fantasizing about the rare cut of prime rib I had there last week The juicy and succulent flesh of my dreams... Â And on Saturday's, it's $13 for the big cut. Â Heck yeah.
Just as has been said here before: they have a giant menu of really great foods, a full bar with lots of interesting cocktail concoctions as well as craft beers, and a true neighborhood appeal. Â This is the type of joint Applebee's wishes it were, except for the food is actually really good at Hanson's.
Eating at the bar is my preferred MO. Â There's usually a pretty diverse crowd. Â When I had the mythical prime-rib I opened by speaking of, there were people in clown wigs, couples on dates, emo chicks, martini swilling yuppies, old people, and this here comic book nerd. All of them seemed to regret not getting the prime rib when they saw mine. Â
This nerd knows how to roll.
I went here once last year and did not really enjoy myself. I have never gone back. The service was not good (friendly but inattentive) and the food was equally not great. I think there was an issue with the cook not being there or something. Can't rave about it in any way. Didn't really buy into the atmosphere either.
I pass by often and actually have spent the last year not even thinking twice about this place. I see other people seem to enjoy it based on their Yelps and I guess I could maybe see why if I hit a bad night and you feel at home there but I did not. It also looks like people are reviewing their happy hour. If my meal was a significantly lower price I would have had a different impression but it was not.
Good luck guys you have the potential and maybe I will try again some day but with so many great choices around I don't foresee why I would.
I came back and celebrated a friend's birthday here for a couple drinks and some food. Â They have a kickin happy hour that extends well into the night. I am pretty sure it is like that M-F, so this is a great place to grab a cheap good brew.
I ordered food this time around. Â They had a $4 on burgers so I chose that and split sweet potato fries with a friend. I'll always order sweet potato fries whenever I see them, because I really haven't found too many places in Denver that offer them. They were delicious and they were served with a side of raspberry habenero dipping sauce. It was like dipping the fries in liquid candy!! Â
If you're in the area, this is a great place to check out. Â You would think it's divey from the outside, but in fact it is very nicely decorated and dimly lit on the inside.
Story time!
I fell off my bike and scraped up my elbow right outside of Hanson's trying to do a fancy dismount, embarrassing and painful. Â The bartender patched it up for me and gave me a makeshift ice pack with my refreshing beverage. Â When Hanson's was about to close she recommended another bar we could go to AND called up the bartender of the recommended bar to tell him that my friends and I were coming. Â When we got to the other bar the bartender welcomed us with free drinks. Â I mean seriously, it doesn't get any better than that...oh wait, it does. Â The second bar turned out to be a biker bar, and since my group was traveling via mountain bike and not by motorcycle, one of the old burly biker men made an announcement, stating that he was going to eat the 4 mountain bikes left outside. Â I guess you just had to be there.
PS- Free pool all the time and zucchini fries!
I like the food here -- I've been here to eat one other time. Â Last nite, the chicken kabobs were great, loved the sauteed spinach and would have liked to have had 2 servings of that instead of the cilantro/tomato-y rice. Â Hubby had some pasta he liked. Â
I need to start counting the number of times that wait staff calls us guys. Â It bugs me. Â Isn't it easier to say "How is everything?" than "How are you guys liking that?"
Personal preference I guess, but I'm over the false comraderie.
On the outside it looks the a little hole in the wall, but it is surprisingly roomy and pretty modern.
The food we had last night for dining out for life was pretty good and we got our food pretty quickly despite the fact that the place was hopping. Â The wait staff was all right, let's leave it at professional. Â
It was a tad bit pricey, but when it's going to a non-profit it's totally worth it.
I think I'd visit again.
