Good food seems to have got lost in the woods. Â
Restaurant week can bring out the weaknesses of any restaurant.  Prix fixe is not and should not be every restaurant's forte. That said, a restaurant that attempts restaurant week is obligated to try to remain a good restaurant during this event.   Beatrice & Woodsley should either stop trying or try much ... much harder. Â
Our restaurant week meal was simply bad.  Underwhelmed by the choices on the 5280 menu, we ordered 'Oh My Cod'.  The description was great.  The meal was not.  The fish was mealy, oily, and disturbingly bland.  The waiter seemed excited by the ingredients; yet all those ingredients were apparently blanched away and replaced by butter prior to plating.   The result was greasy, messy, and unmemorable,  The server seemed aware that the meal was bad and avoided not only discussing the food but also  making eye contact during his infrequent visits to our table, Â
To be fair, we went back two days later for brunch. Â The Sunday morning pace of the place seemed calm and the space remained beautiful. Â I was hopeful that our Friday night dinner was a fluke. Â Sadly, it wasn't. Â Our ordering the 'Salmon's Lot' was preceded by earnest endorsement by the server. Â The description, again, was great. Â The meal, again, was abysmal. Â The smoked salmon had the flavor and consistency of a fish flavored gummy bear. Â It was tough and cloying - nothing that is usually associated with salmon. Â The kale was inedibly salty. Â The bread was soggy with a dreary smear of something wet and white. Â There was, however, a perfect runny poached egg. Â A couple noxious bites made me long for some decent lox. Â I'd suggest stopping by a decent deli on the way to brunch and simply ordering that terrific poached egg.
The server was very nice and removed the meal from our bill. Â She said that the chef had tasted our returned food and agreed that it was not good. It is disconcerting that the chef didn't discover this by tasting the food prior to serving it.
B & W seems to be struggle being anything but a very nice room - a good illusion of woods and a poor illusion of a good restaurant.
The place is beautiful inside. Very small, personal setting. Staff is friendly and well informed on wine, menu, etc. A great place to bring a client, parent or visiting friends. Food is a little bit pricey and the cocktails are very expensive. Not a good restaurant in terms of menu size or for alternative diets (i.e. gluten free/vegetarian).
Overall, a very nice place to visit and one of the more unique restaurants in Denver.
