I asked the bartender what he recommends and he said they have a great burger. I got that and he brought out the most mediocre Applebee chain inspiring burger I've had in awhile. I could have drinks in here cuz I like the actually bar space but if thats their trophy burger, I will pass on the food and go next door to the Blue Line to eat.

I hate doing this review, but I am so sick of being burned by Harry's Country Club. It has the bones to be a great place, but it's just not. They fail so hard it hurts.
Aesthetically and in terms of selection, Harry's CC has arguably the best patio in the River Market (and maybe all of greater downtown) but it's an act of god to actually get served. This weekend, meeting two of our friends, the BF and I joined their table on the patio. We were ignored for literally 25 minutes. We saw servers pointing to our table and talking amongst themselves but then all walking away and doing their own thing. We gave up and left.
I am trying to give you money! You are a server, don't you want money? If you don't, why not get out of the way and let in somebody who seemingly has a goal beyond raising my blood pressure.
This is by far not an isolated incident, and it's a running joke amongst the neighborhood of how terrible the service here can be, particularly on the weekends. Does nobody that works here care?
Well, that's not entirely true. Service at the actual bar is still quite legit. Friendly and prompt bartenders. And as I've said, they have great drinks and some really good food. But that's not enough to save this place. The management is either completely unaware at how laughably bad things can be, or they simply don't care. Either way, unacceptable.
Add to this their ridiculous "close whenever we want" policy, and it's like they're TRYING to fail. Running a restaurant and bar is a labor of love. Where is your love for your business or your guests?
I'm sure I'll be back. It's just too convenient and too many of my friends will want to go here. But I'll be grumpy until they prove to me that I don't have a reason to be sore. And because I don't want to die, I won't hold my breath.
Get it together, Harry's. You're failing hard.
I've been to Harry's for drinks many times but I've never been there for lunch. Â Recently I had to meet someone who worked in the Northland and the spot I picked for a business lunch was Harry's. Â He had a cuban sandwich and I had a philly cheese (I'm always in search of the best philly cheese in town) which was decent but not awesome.
Service was good - almost overly attentive - and the prices were not just reasonable but downright cheap.
For Kansas City Restaurant Week this year, I took my mother to sample the special menu at Harry's Country Club in the River Market. In their own words, Harry's is "A reverent take on a 1940s honky-tonk roadhouse", and that is exactly what it is. I love everything about this restaurant; the vibe here is part old-fashioned southern country club, part western honky-tonk. Harry's is a perfect combination of a modern, hip vibe and the charm and swankiness of post-World War II Americana. You know that the owner has a deep appreciation for the country music legends of yesteryear; the decor and interior design is a spectacular but tasteful panoply of memorabilia from American music's heyday. Rather than feeling nostalgia for such talented musicians and a time gone by, there's an eerie sensation that at any moment Hank Williams will walk through the door and take a seat at the bar. That being said, of course Harry's wouldn't be complete without its famed jukebox replete with country western classics and rockabilly favorites. The song selections are not contrived, however, but are a purist's delight.
I've wanted to bring my mother here for dinner for some time, so I was excited when I saw that Harry's would be participating in Restaurant Week. To complete our small dinner party, my aunt and uncle also joined us after hearing so much about it from me. The special menu offered for Restaurant Week included three courses for only $15. Each dish was a sampling of the extensive fare available at Harry's Country Club, which offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
For starters, I chose the Tomato Basil Soup, which was quite good, rich and creamy, and the perfect first course. For our entree, my mother and I selected the Bowtie Pasta with Basil & Cream which came with grilled chicken and was made with asparagus, green peas, and plum tomatoes. The portion was large and very filling, and the chicken was just right: seared and seasoned on the outside, and perfectly cooked. My aunt and uncle had the Yucatan Shrimp for their entree and raved that the sweet and sour shrimp was succulent with a kick of heat. For dessert, I savored the decadent Chocolate Torte. It was melt-in-your-mouth goodness, although I also found myself eying my family's huge slices of Carrot Cake. They assured me it was as good as it looked, and I don't even normally like carrot cake!
Overall, we had a very pleasant experience, and I know that we all will be returning. My husband and I enjoy coming here in the evening to hear our favorite bands play on their large and inviting patio. Unlike some night clubs or bars in KC, Harry's is quiet, calm, and relaxed in comparison, while at the same time providing you with entertainment and an escape from the cares of the world. Harry's is also well known for its well-stocked bar and extensive drink menu. They offer top-notch and unusual craft beers from around the world as well as your favorite cocktails.

To-Go Orders Welcome
If for no other reason, I love Harry's because they taught me to love Breakfast Stout. They seem to have a reputation among beer geeks for their extensive selection, and while I'm not a fanatic, I do enjoy a discovery now and then.
I chose the Founder's as a joke sort of, to go with my favorite Harry's dish, Chilaquiles from the breakfast menu (Breakfast Stout, get it?), which you can order any time (more love for Harry's!). Grilled chicken, cheese and tortillas in green chile sauce, with scrambled eggs on the side. Friggin' fabulous! Another time, I had one of the best Croque Monsieur sandwiches I've ever had. They offer a lot to choose from without trying to be all things to all people-you know, Asian, Italian, Mexican and American all on the same menu.
In addition to the big beer list, Harry's does something else I love: booze flights! Why limit such an ingenious concept to wine? When the Scotch and  Bourbon lists run upwards of 60 bottles each, it's REALLY hard to choose! And there's no better way to decide if a 750ml bottle is worth what ol' Pappy VanWinkle says it is.
Now old-time country western music isn't one of my Pandora playlists, but I'm always intrigued by the Roy Rogers Fan Club decor...is it tongue-in-cheek, or are they serious about it? Who cares, it's fun! And you can't beat Cowboy Beefcake in the Ladies' room! My experience with the service here has been pretty unmemorable, either way-neither outstanding nor infuriating. It seems like I've always been here in cold weather; I haven't been on that patio since it was Big Daddy's (...moment of silence for my long-departed favorite Cajun joint...), but I'd like to hear some music here. Spring can't get here fast enough...
Harry's is one of those places where I've had an awesome time, and a really mediocre time. I've had both those experiences several times.... What I'm getting at is, its hit and miss, but i keep going. Its like an ugly dog that keeps showing up on my porch. I give it a little food and then shoe it away. I complain about the nuisance but secretly if it ever went away for good I'd be heartbroken. Â
If you've made it this far into this review, by now you're saying "why don't you stop writing a Louis L'amour novel and tell me something useful?" Â Fine...
The food is always good, particularly the fish tacos. Its not the cheapest place in the area but its also not the most expensive (I'm looking in your direction La Fou Frog).  The drink selection is good, unless you want wine. I recommend the Dark and Stormy. They are really proud of the whisky selection which is good for some people I imagine. They have a decent happy  hour menu and if you get there before 8:00 pm or on a week day you will probably have a downright good time.
The dark side of Harry's manifests on the weekends. The place is always packed to capacity and the entire restaurant seems to be being waited on by one, dis-interested waitress. So don't expect quick service. In spite of this, i still enjoy being there, especially during the summer.
Harry's gets an obligatory extra half star for being in walking distance of my apartment, and is probably closer to a 3 start, to 3.5 star place. However, go there once, and if you're anything like me, you will be back, again and again.
I'm going to start by saying I went to a large group happy hour here, but haven't gone for lunch or dinner or spent any time in the main bar.
Our party was out in the "back room" which is code for enclosed patio, which is, in January, cold.
We had a party of over 20 people and one waiter assigned to us. That's a shame. My co-workers can drink hard and drink fast and had we more servers, more money would have been spent. Guaranteed.
The waiter we did have was nice enough  and tried to serve efficiently, but there was just no winning for him.
The drinks were good and strong. The appetizers we ordered were tasty enough.
But again, more servers?!?!?!?? This gathering was planned ahead and they were warned.
I came here one saturday with my husband and a friend, both of whom had eaten here before and loved the place. Â
It's very kitschy inside with the old pictures and signs, I enjoyed the decor. Â
It was pretty empty when we went in which is always nice in my book and our server was pretty good. Â
We started with the baked brie, which I will never have enough of. Â Brie with grapes is just a pleasant way to start the day. Â
I ordered the Cuban sandwich since i've never had one and love anything to with mustard and it certainly didn't let me down. Â The combination of melted swiss, pork and mustard is just heavenly. Â The fries were done my favorite way, sliced small and done crispy.
They also sell hard cider in mixed 6 packs for a lot cheaper than anywhere i've found so far. Â The Pear Cider is my favorite.
I've been here a couple times. They have a nice patio when it's warm enough. We didn't have the most attentive waitress, but it was a big group. We had flat bread pizza and it was pretty good. They have a wide range of speciality cocktails at a good price, the menu of drinks could use more of a description so you know what you are getting when you order something with a goofy name.
Review Source:Harry's, I love ya! I have been to Harry's at 11am and past 11pm, plus many times in between. Harry's has a great selection of libations! I highly recommend a whiskey flight if you have the stomach for it!
The food menu is not really typical bar food. It seems to be a step or two up from bar food, but it isn't gourmet quality either. I can tell you I've never had a bad meal from Harry's, and that's one reason why I'll keep going back.
I swear I give "Harry" of Harry's Country Club more money than my landlord.
I love Harry's CC. Â This is my go-to place for great martinis and an incredible beer selection. Â This is NOT a wine bar... honestly, if you are going with a friend who only drinks wine, please do not take them here. Â We always prefer to sit at the bar - their staff is super knowledgeable. Â
The atmosphere is awesome. Â The lighting at the bar is perfect and looks good on anyone... They have a great outdoor seating section and a screened in porch that can be fun on rainy days. Â The downside is the food, which is really not good. Â The potato chips with homemade dip are yummy, and some swear by their enchiladas (I know - right?). Â But I just choose to eat elsewhere.
Honestly, if I'm going to grab a drink after work or just want a nice, local bar with good beer and great people, there's no place I'd rather be than Harry's. Â You should be sure to stop by, and say hello if you see me at the bar! Â I'll be the gal with the IPA in my hand and a big smile on my face!
I like Harry's. I really do. The food is good, sometimes a little guilt-causing and indulgent (gotta love the fried food). Their house drinks are great on a summer evening with a group of friends and the patio is one of my favorites in town.
I just wish the staff was a little more friendly. They are not outwardly rude, by any means, but sometimes they're not outwardly nice either. Everytime I'm there, I'm with a group of friends on the patio so my outing is never truly ruined. But everytime, the servers are a little on the under-attentive side.
That being said, I'll go back to the good stuff. The house drinks - haven't had a bad one yet and the nachos are excellent.
I'm going to say 3.5 stars. Â They have decent options for happy hour and the atmosphere is good. Â The service is very hit or miss, even in the same night! Â I've never had food here so my experience is based on sitting at the bar and drinking.
There are times I am very finicky and I can't decide what I want to drink. Â It's these moments that I am happy for the sangria at Harry's Country Club. It's not too sweet, not overly fruity, but somewhere in the middle. Â Like I said earlier, service is very hit or miss. Â In the same night, working the same bar, were two different bartenders. Â One was very attentive and friendly, and the other had his grumpy pants on.
Overall, Harry's Country Club is a decent place to grab some drinks.
Damn it, why are the food and drinks so good and the service so awful? Â I've liked Harry's for so long, but I think today was the final visit for awhile... At least until the servers who were working are fired. :( we were there for happy hour, and none of the six of us ordered anything difficult or asked for anything special, but the server came back multiple times to confirm orders. The past two times I've been the staff has been so bleh, I think they are just trying so hard to be cool, they forget they are there to help customers.
The food was great and I love their martinis, but the vapid attitude of the wait staff will keep me away for a little while.
Great classic old neighborhood bar.
Fantastic beer and liquor selection.
Classy bar... With classic old interior ..But not pretentious. Â Friendly Bartenders in white shirts and black tie. Nice cigar selection and a enjoyable outdoor patio. No obnoxiously loud music.
Great place to meet friends and have a few drinks.
One star? Â Yikes! Â But our experience was just that bad! Â And it's for one reason and one reason alone: THE OWNER.
Let's set the scene: It's Saturday night. Â It's the night of the Glow Run, meaning an influx of more than 5,000 people to the River Market. Â It's just a little busy.
My group of friends and I -- 10 of us total -- grabbed one drink each, then sat at table on the patio. Â We were tired from running (or, in my case, walking leisurely), so we decided to order from our waiter. Â (Wow, I just realized how lazy that sounds!) He was clearly harried, but happy to put in our order.
Thirty minutes passed. Â No drinks. Â We asked our waiter, and he told us that our orders were in, but the bartenders were slammed at the bar, so they were making those drinks first. Â We understood. Â No big deal -- we saw that our ticket was at the front of the line.
Then we waited another 20 minutes or so. Â OK, this was getting a little crazy. Â A few of our friends had gone to the bar and gotten served immediately. Â So we decided we would see what was going on. Â We went inside and talked to our waiter. Â The same thing was still happening, so we asked him if it would be OK to cancel our order with him and go through the bar instead (we would obviously still tip him). Â He said he totally understood, so we tried to talk to a bartender about it. Â
BIG MISTAKE! Â The bartender (who, come to find out was the owner) WENT OFF on the waiter right in front of us. Â Screamed at him, then told us, "This isn't the first time this has happened." Â We couldn't believe it. Â We tried to make it very clear that our waiter was doing a good job of communicating with us and had been doing the best he could in a bad situation. Â The owner continued to talk badly about his staff, yell at our waiter and not help the situation in any way. Â We canceled our order and left.
I just can't support a place where the owner treats his staff so terribly, especially right in front of customers. Â This wasn't my first visit to Harry's, but I'm sure it was my last.
I love Harry's. Â I have been here a dozen times or more and every one has been excellent. Â I am so boring because I only order two food items here. Â 1. The knife and fork chili dog 2. the homemade chips and homemade french onion dip.
You can get these items on the happy hour menu, which is huge compared to other's happy hours. Â
I love Harry's because of the crowd it attracts as well. Â There are generally nice and friendly people here. Â I don't do the types of bars/places that attract idiots(i.e. the blue line, that so- called mexican place down the way). Â Harry's is classier than most in their food, beer selection, and service. Â I don't care if it's bar food, at least they do it very well. Â
Grab an ice cold Mercenary IPA on the patio and that knife and fork chili dog and listen to some Buddy Guy? Â Yes please!
I met up with some friends here and really have no complaints. Â I was not aware that it was a country bar located right in Kansas City!
The beer selection was amazing--but of course, the food too!
I had the French dip along with a snack of sorts, the fried brie cheese--along with the special chips! Â The desserts were also wonderful (It's been a few weeks, so please forgive me for forgetting what they were--they were that exotic!). Having been filled, I shared with my friends.
Megan the waitress was very patient and helpful and was more than willing to help us with our questions. She was even nice enough to allow me to charge my camera.
Ambience is different than any other bar or restaurant I have been in. The area, still a part of the city in which I live, is quite a change from my neighborhood. Almost feels like one has gone back to a bygone area. A nice getaway--right within the same town!
I love Harry's. Â And now that R Bar is closed, I will visit more often. . .and I will probably bump it up to five if my experiences here continue to be incredible. Â Btw Harry's, if you read Yelp reviews. . . You might consider picking up some of the bands R Bar used to host. Â I am surely going to miss Truckstop Honeymoon and Konza Swamp Band. Â You would hands down be my favorite then, and you'd have to kick me out at close every weekend! Â But on with my review.
If you like beer, go to Harry's. You can view their massive beer list online and make your wish list in advance. They have pretty much anything you could ever want in a bottle or can. Â Last night, I had a Bellhaven Scottish Ale can, and it was better than tap or bottle. Â
Not a beer drinker? Â I am pretty sure Harry's has the most extensive array of scotch and tequila in K.C. Â Again, find it online before you go. Â
Three more things to address here. Â One is the venue. Â Wow, I LOVE the high celings, the brick, the old bar, and all the old-timey country music decor. Â This is my favorite bar in KC for decor and overall look. Â When the weather is decent, the huge patio is pretty awesome as well.
Next, the clientele. Â Harry's is not overrun by younguns, at least not late Saturday night. Â I would guess mostly 30 and 40-somethings hang out here.
Finally, the bartenders here are top notch. Â They are attentive, friendly, and knowledgeable about everything they have! Â It irritates me to ask about a product and get a response of "I don't know; I'm not a _______ drinker.". While that may be the case, you should know what you're selling! Â These bartenders have never steered me wrong, and they answer every question I have.
Looking forward to many, many more nights at Harry's Country Club.
OK, I have given Harry's another try. At first, I liked the place, but my most recent experience had me questioning if I would ever be willing to go back. However, I found myself in the area, and m'lady and I decided we would give it one more shot. Granted, the place was very quiet (about 6pm on a Tuesday), but the experience was much, much better.
For one, our server actually acknowledged our existence. That alone made her worlds better than the nightmare of a guy we had last night. I definitely appreciate my existence being at least noted. She was very efficient, but not a pain in the butt.
My drink came out quick and was poured pretty well for $4.25 or so during happy hour. We also ordered some food - a Pork Tenderloin sandwich, which was $6.95 or so off of the happy hour menu, and a Cuban sandwich, which was not on the happy hour menu.
The food came out pretty quick. Much better than the 84 hours last night (I only slightly round up to that number...). The great thing? It was clear the food came out right after it was cooked, not after 30 minutes under a heat lamp. Success! What does that mean? Well, for one, the sandwich bread wasn't disgustingly soggy, nor the fries cold.
The pork tenderloin, in fact, was almost too hot to eat at first. Beyond that, it was just a normal p.t. sandwich - big, fried, unhealthy, and decent. The Cuban sandwich was much, much better than last time - much more meat, much tastier meat, and actually hot. It was pretty good...not the best Cuban, but pretty good.
So, I will now actually be back here. I still think this place is best for drinks, but the food as won my SLIGHT approval again. As long as I don't have to suffer through the guy from last time...
Harry's Country Club is an icon in my own mind. I've had a lot of great happy hours there, and they weren't the raucous occasions that afflict 20-somethings. Perhaps that's why I like Harry's so much. An aside: When referred to as "Harry's, THIS is where you go, not the other one.
There's nothing fundamentally wrong with Harry's though I agree that some good points have been made in the previous reviews about their inconsistent closing times and the service black hole on the patio. All-in-all though Harry's is a great place for strong, cheap drinks. ...and the food isn't terrible either, but remember, it is a bar.
I love Harry's Country Club. It was one of the first restaurants I visited after moving to Kansas City and the friend that took me explained that it was like "honky tonk Kansas City classyness" and I do believe he was right.
I think the best time to go to Harry's is in the winter and during happy hour. It's so cozy! The decor is just perfect - it's themed without being cheesy or inauthentic. It's just the right amount of dimly lit and the painting of the girl behind the bar is gorgeous.
I'm not a knowledgeable whiskey drinker... I'm more of a "put it in front of me and I'll drink it" kinda lady. Anyway, if I were as classy as I'd like to be then Harry's would be heaven because their whiskey selection is praised often. I do take pride in being a fancy beer drinker and Harry's hits the spot there. Sure it's not a cheap place to drink, but they have great variety all the way from yard beers to rare bombers. That brings me to the ongoing discussion about the prices. They keep me away a lot of the time even though realistically they aren't much more than a lot of other places. I just wish it was cheaper to drink here and that's why I'm being a baby and subtracting a star.
Onto the food. The only thing I ever order here is the Cuban sandwich. I think I'm a good judge of Cubanos because I've spent more than half my life in the Caribbean and in Florida... and I'll hand it to Harry's - their sammie is the real deal. How strange is that?! Country legends on the wall and then a porksplosion with cheese and pickles on the right kind of bread? The Phantoms Of The Opry twanging the steel guitar on the weekends? This place must exist to make me happy.
Looking for somewhere new one Friday evening we decided to skip the usual places and head to Harry's. It looked like we weren't the only ones! Despite the cold February winds mixed with winter-y drizzle the place was PACKED! Luckily there were only two of us so we were seated right away.
The happy hour menu is extensive and has cheap prices for huge portions. I consulted Yelp reviews and chose the steak burger (~$7). It was a good bar burger with a huge plate of fries. The toppings were fresh and the cheese wasn't american (unless you specified american cheese...). The hubby just chose the enchiladas. Not all that exciting, but I didn't have high hopes for that dish.
On to the beers. The selection was astounding and it was so hard to choose! I went for a seasonal beer that they still had around (haha! A Christmas beer that was delicious! It was something like the Breckenridge Christmas Ale.) For about $2 it was a steal! The hubby chose a Fat Tire of some kind and was very happy, of course (~$4).
Our waitress was very nice and the lively crowd really cheered us up after a long, cold work week. I think we will be back for more casual happy hour dinners!
Harry's is the model of refinement without pretense. They were first I knew to delve into what is now the ubiquitous "yard beer" phenomenon, positioning cheap yellow beer as a classy value-priced alternative poured into a small glass. The crowd is a mixture of young and old, quaffing everything from bargain basement beer to a rare beer option or a selection from an impressive collection of whiskeys. Harry's is your neighborhood bar, even if you're not from the neighborhood, as it'll make you feel that at home.
As a River Market resident, this has been my "default" bar for years, and we've been through a lot together. I've endured what seemed like quarterly price hikes on beer, almost losing hope entirely when hometown Boulevard pours got north of $5 a pint. Even yard beers aren't affordable anymore, but when the bar seems to stay full in the early evening, I guess Harry had room to expand the price. In a candid conversation with a bartender one night, he justified the prices as a means to maintain Harry's expansive beer and whiskey inventory, which is certainly impressive. It seems other bars have figured out the harmonious existence of choice and value, however.
For me, the price increases sadly transformed Harry's from a place where I'd happily stop in, have one or two beers and say hello  to neighbors that would inevitably be there, to a place that I don't consider first for a quick outing. Although I consider Harry's honky-tonk retro environment comfortably classy, it isn't a place I consider worthy of premium pricing, especially since several of the once varied taps have been surrendered to lowest common denominator beers. The best way around this is happy hour, which delivers great value, but it just makes "normal time" that much harder to swallow.
Still, it is a lovely place. With one TV that is thankfully never on, a jukebox loaded with old school country that never plays too loud to speak over, and a lot of quirky decorations, this is a place that incubates and stimulates conversation.
The food? Pretty decent, actually. There is a lot to work with here if you are a vegetarian, and I always ravenously devour anything that is put in front of me. It is certainly a bar first, but the food is tasty by bar food standards.
Finally, I'll echo what others have said about the hours. I've suffered the kicked-out-at-10 phenomenon, when business was deemed too slow to warrant serving a loyal customer. I've walked the few blocks from home to meet a friend to be met with a locked door. It doesn't take much of that for one to give up, and it is disrespectful to customers who have been loyal to your business to not serve the neighborhood with consistency.
I've known Harry's for most of its existence, and I still love the feeling I get when I walk in those retro country doors, but I've fallen a bit out of love with it. I feel like I've given more than it has given back, so I'm not going to pour my heart into it anymore. I still love you, Harry's, but I deserve a bit better.
Still, I couldn't bear to give you the 3 stars I originally clicked. You're alright.
An amazing tap/bottle selection and good happy hour prices make Harry's a great place to go for happy hour, but it's a little on the pricy side without it.
However, the black bean dip appetizer? Â Enough to make me come back again and again. Â Chips, black bean dip, salsa and a lime sour cream drizzle are the perfect complement to a beer and conversation with friends in the cozy atmosphere. Â The music is always great and the patio is one of the best during the summertime with a great view of the downtown skyline. Â Get there early, though - it gets crowded fast.
It's good in the winter, too - the grilled cheese and tomato soup combo makes for fantastic comfort food. Â The rest of the menu is pretty good, and while I'm unlikely to go just to eat, if meeting friends out for drinks it's a place I know will have tasty options.
First let me tell you about 2 of my favorite things at Harry's Country Club:
1. The ladies bathroom. It's filled with photos of men's buns. Hot little booties of sexy guys, sometimes in their undies. Applause please! Â Makes me smile everytime
2. The large painting over the bar of the naked woman in a headdress. So wonderful & eye-catching.
Although these could sound in poor taste, let me assure you they are not. Â Harry's is a class act. Â It's a welcoming, comfy place to gather with friends or family for some drinks or food. Decor is an homage to the good 'ol days goneby. Lots of pictures, signs & treasures to keep your eyes entertained. Service is friendly.
Their beer & liquor selection is unmatched in KC. Â They have a multitude of options of whatever liquor suits your pleasure, at every price point, whether it be mezcal, rye whiskey, scotch, etc...Tons of beer options too. Â I'm getting thirsty
Good happy hour specials on food & drinks M-F 3-7 & Sat 11-7. Food is mostly straight forward american fare with a few tex-mex & italian offerings.
Fish tacos are my fave & they've got 'em! Â Soft flour tortillas with grilled tilapia, cheddar & jack cheese, shredded lettuce & pico de gallo served w/ Spanish rice & chipotle sour cream. This is a hearty helping of 3 fish tacos. I prefer grilled to fried fish & these chunks are well seasoned w/ a peppery kick. Always extra points for chipotle sour cream. Â Spanish rice had good flavor & salsa is simple. I'm a fan of these fish tacos.
The live music offerings on the patio when the weather is nice make for a charming evening.
Pull up a bar stool or chair & settle in for a nice time at this modern saloon.
Have you ever wanted to drink in a place with some actual soul and life to it, as opposed to the usual corporate concocted dreb of neon lights and matching uniforms? Â Harry's is your place. Â They've got posters and jukeboxes, and a dark, fun atmosphere to match the wall adornments. Â The waitresses are very engaging and nice, and the happy hour foods are absolutely killer. Â I love coming here for either cheap food and drinks or the live music they set up on the porch outside. Â
For such a small place, their beer selection is a wonderful surprise, with much more range than any of the bars in close proximity. Â I've really got no major complaints about this place, other than it not being closer to me and serving all their items for free!! Â Great little place in the River Market!!
Holy smokes, am I the last of my Yelper friends to review? EEKS!!
I've been there a few times, including the recent wake, errrr, going away party for our Yelp goddess Joi.
We arrived early so got to partake in the yummy happy hour prices! Â We shared some chips with Daniel, and I think everyone enjoyed their food. Â Despite having 20 or so people there, I thought the waitress did a great job of keeping everyone's drinks filled, and tabs separate (couples and singles!!).
I thought that the employees were friendly and the parking convenient. Â Our tab turned out very reasonable, considering the number of drinks and food we had AFTER happy hour! Â Parking was pretty good, although the bar wasn't that crowded.
Wow. I feel like I should automatically give this place 5 stars just because of hype and, you know, to follow the herd. But I'm not...sorry.
I went on a Friday at about 6:30 pm. Went inside the front door and the interior space was completely wall-to-wall with people. I was shown to a tiny table for 2 near a bathroom and I thought that would be kind of weird, so I asked to be seated outside. With some grumbling and a snotty "oooookaayyyyy" from the server, I was taken outside through the apparent smoking area and to something like a cheap patio table that had bird poop on it and did not get cleaned off until I asked twice.
That is how it began and it never got better. Fortunately, I guess, things were consistently mediocre to bad and never got horrendous. That's about the only positive thing I can think of to say. I had a hamburger and a coke and I couldn't see what the deal was with this place...the bun was just a generic bun out of a bag and the patty itself was like one of those cheap manufactured patties you buy in rolls at Wal-Mart. I got an attitude when I asked for ketchup with my fries.
Maybe people go here because it's trendy and neat and kind of shabby and old-timey on the inside. Maybe some people actually go for the music or whatever. It's a mystery to me why this place is so popular.
Last weekend seemed to be a time for trying new things - new restaurants, new shops, and new bars! Harry's was one of the new places that we tried, and it was definitely A-OK, even if we were there for the sad (for us) occasion of Joi's farewell!
Harry's certainly has an old-time saloon feeling to it, especially with the large pin-up style painting over the bar - it's totally something you'd expect to have seen in Tombstone, AZ back in the 1800s. Couple that with the creaky wood floors and the comforting yellowish lighting, and you feel like you've stepped back in time. And I'm totally cool with that!
We weren't exactly sure where the group was when we got to Harry's, so we ordered a drink at the bar before scouting everything out. The bartenders were quick and friendly, and while the drinks certainly weren't cheap, they weren't horribly expensive either. The outside enclosed patio was nice enough, and I hear the proper outdoors patio area is even better, when the weather cooperates! The table service out there was a bit slow, but  in fairness, she did have a large group of us to contend with.
We didn't have any food, as we were on our way to dinner, but the chips and dip seemed to be a big hit, as were the burgers.
I'm glad we finally made it to Harry's, as I had been hearing about it for ages, and I could see stopping in for a drink from time to time, though I'd probably be most content sitting at the bar.
I met up with Joi B. and other yelpers for Joi's farewell. Â They were in the patio area that was enclosed which would be opened but it was windy and cold. This place was a little small with limited seats and tables inside as well as the patio area.
Everybody there already had drinks and a couple of appetizers. Â I ordered a Murphy's Irish Stout since I ate before I came. Â Our waitress was super friendly and nice. Â My Murphy's Irish Stout tasted like a lighter version of Guinness but still good in my opinion. Â I also shared some chips and sour cream dip with another yelper. Â The chips and sour cream dip were a good combination together.
Somebody ordered a burger and it made me want to order one too. Â It looked pretty good and the fries were tiny. Â I don't know the name of it but I'll be sure to try it next time.
I recently moved to KC from Phoenix and have been in desperate search of somewhere I can go and know the food, service and drinks will be great. Harry's Country Club has provided just that. As a downtown resident, there are plenty of chains to choose from in Power and Light, but I prefer the locally owned vibe of the Rivermarket. Harry's fits that bill!
The happy hour menu is great and the food never disappoints. I strongly suggest sitting on the patio (when the weather agrees), taking in a band in the evening and enjoying a Pear and Ginger... YUM!
I have taken almost every out-of-town visitor I have had to Harry's and they all enjoy it. Each one of my friends and family members looks for something different in their drink of choice and dinner option, but they all come away satisfied, full and happy. With my picky friends and family, that is something special!
The waitstaff is always friendly, has great suggestions on drinks and menu items with fast service.
If you want a casual, low-key place to take in a great dining experience, Harry's Country Club is for you... I know it's for me!
I used to go to Harry's quite a bit when living in the area, but toward the end of that time less and less.
The atmosphere and the bar probably are more of the draw. The place has a great vibe to it and I really like the vintage look and feel of the place.
Bartenders here are generally smart and can hold a good discussion. Most of the wait staff knows how to treat customers (I say most because some of the people working here are not trained well).
All well and good, right? Meh.
Here's the thing. Prices continually increase. It has one of the longest Happy Hours in Kansas City. Two years ago, this Happy Hour was an amazing deal and some of it still kind of is. I get prices sometimes have to go up. But it's pretty silly. It feels like they get you hooked and then continually raise the price.
Plus, beers can be outrageously priced when not on the Happy Hour menu. I think a Boulevard runs about $6. A PBR is $3. It's ridamndiculous! I won't take it! And I don't. I just drink elsewhere now.
I really, really, really, really adore their happy hour. One of the best happy hours in town. And the bartenders are extremely knowledgeable about different kinds of beer -- ask for their recommendation, and they'll bring you something tailored to your tastes.
Like most places in KC, the food is a bit heavy (and greasy). But, hey, what else can you expect when cheese grits are on the menu? Get the fried city chicken. It's an indulgence, but it's far better than many of the other options -- like a store-bought hummus, or a completely, unarguably average chicken quesadilla.
Harry's looks like it's out of a movie, as bartenders pour bourbon and Johnny Cash pours from the juke box, you can imagine you're stepping into a scene where something interesting will happen...perhaps a fun night out with friends?
The bartenders are knowledgeable, though the wait staff not always. We were once told a smokestack series beer was a certain price, only to have a significantly higher price appear on the bill, with the waiter playing dumb claiming the manager said nothing could be done. That guy didn't stick around that long though. Another annoying thing that sometimes happens, sometimes not, is charging for ice if my husband orders bourbon neat but ice on the side. They're clearly making a profit off the bourbon, no question. Charging for an ice? What gives?
Drinks, overall, are not the cheapest in town, which is why I remove one star. Also, they aren't open on Sunday, and I always need lunch or dinner on Sunday, another star removed. But for selection of certain liquors, ambiance, a nice patio, terrific jukebox, and proximity to my abode, it can't be beat.
True confession time: I have a fondness for Ruffles potato chips and French onion dip. Or, at least I used to. Frito Lay used to make a delish French onion dip, the kind in that little tin can. I think it had been about 20 years since the last time I had it and I had been craving it, so I bought some for a party. NOT THE SAME ONION DIP! Either that or my taste buds have changed significantly since I was a young 'un, but I have pretty strong taste memories (or "chewmories" as the K would put it).
Harry's, in their infinite wisdom, has somehow recreated the French onion dip I so enjoyed in my youth. Their homemade potato chips are outstanding as well (I can forgive that they aren't rippled like Ruffles:) Despite my best intentions, I scarfed down half of the huge basket and I think the K and I were about to fight over licking the dip bowl clean (I let him have the honor...JK).
It's patio season and Harry's has gone under a bit of renovation, starting last fall, I believe, with an additional semi outdoor seating area (convenient on rainy nights), a stage for bands and what appears to be interesting industrial looking vessels with trellises (?), which I assume will  be planters. Last night the five of us sat outside and took advantage of the perfect Kansas City early summer weather (read: it's not over 90 after the sun goes down). Beer was flowing (wine for Yours, Truly, a decent Cabernet), old country tunes piped outside, courtesy of that amazing juke box, and you can't get a better Saturday evening, in my opinion.
Now, to get that damn onion dip out of my head...
