Great bar and restaurant! Â Had the scallops wrapped in pancetta. Â The scallops were large, fresh and delicious, but the pancetta was a tad too salty for me. Â My friend had their pork chop which was ginormous and scrumptious. Â And we had some of their chocolate mousse cake, which they say is made in-house. Â Our server was very friendly. Â You really couldn't have asked for a better night out.
Review Source:We really want to love Highland Place. Â It has live music, good food, and a friendly staff. Â They just can't seem to pull it all together.
Tonight our waitress said she would be back in a minute to take our order. Â At least ten minutes and one cigarette later (she reeked of smoke) she returned.
After that things went fairly smoothly, although my water glass was empty for long periods of time and there was more breading than crab in the crab cakes. Â
Meanwhile we are being blasted by the live music from the bar area. Â I don't know why anyone thought the band needed microphones in such a small space. Â We could barely hear each other in the next room, although we are very sensitive to noise.
There seem to be a large number of staff moving around, yet the service is awful.
In contrast Arturo's has a similar staff/customer ratio and their service is outstanding. Â
Clearly the management needs to make improvements.
The food is good, although they seem to overheat the plates to make the food taste "fresh from the oven." Â The chicken pot pie was quite tasty.
This place Sucks!!! I experienced " Hurricane Sandy" that week and was out of power. The boyfriend wanted to watch the game , so we decided on this, "hell hole". The glasses of wine we had are the only thing that probably keeps this place afloat. I was like damn if Hurricane Sandy didn't kill me, their freaking wings will LMAO. The wings were very salty. We ordered the jerk wings. They really need to hire a new cook .
P.S. Children should not be in the bar area.
My second time here; Â first time was with a large group (25) where service was slow (understandably) but the food was great so I came back with just me and my wife. Â Service was good this time. Â Love the variety in the menu. Â Bar food with a little panache. Â My favorite is the Emily Burger; Â a black bean burger with shitake mushrooms. Â Prices were reasonable. Â We will be back for sure.
Review Source:We intended to go to another restaurant in Maplewood for a late dinner, but when we heard the live music we stopped to eat here. We stood at the hostess stand for a bit until a girl came over and asked if we needed to be seated. After we had been sitting for a while, the hostess noticed that no one had come to our table yet so she apologized and began taking our orders. Our appetizer came out pretty fast.... I mean this in the literal sense. The bus boy was running from the kitchen yelling "Ow Ow Ow!! It's hot!." By the time our entrees had come we still didn't have silverware so we asked the hostess/waitress who apologized again, explaining that the new bus boys had no clue what they were doing... I gathered this by the time my food came flying out of the kitchen for a second time, at which point I actually apologized for causing the boy so much pain. The food was pretty good, but the service was absolutely horrible. I give the girl credit for trying to assume so many responsibilities, but 1 person can't do everything. They need to get it together.
Review Source:Horrible service, cold food, hair in one persons' food, defensive manager trying to defend the hour plus delay between appetizer and entree when fewer than half the tables were filled. I do not want to hear from the hostess that the kitchen is "slammed" when half the tables are empty. Truly pitiful experience, I would be surprised if this place is still open in six months.
Review Source:The menu has diversified considerably since my last review. Better steak offering. Still mostly all dishes are quite good.
The bar menu in particular holds a number of treats. Be sure to try the Steak & Mushroom Pie, from a recipe of the owner. Also, the Tortilla is a yummy steal $6!
And, they're open for lunch. Enjoy!
Atmosphere: Its a nice spacious room which is uncommon in Maplewood. The bar itself was buzzing but we ate in the dining room.
Sevice was prompt but we kept getting different people to to take orders, serve and receive check.
For the above I would give 4 stars and the wine list while limited was well chosen.
The food  was more variable . The tapas was well prepared and tastly. They were fun. The main courses were not as great. My wife had the salmon. It was a thin, small portion and came medium when we had asked for it to be rare. I had the panchetta wrapped scallops which were great.
I will return again but will stick with the tapas
Pros:
(1) Really tasty food - we had the meatball and Spanish taco tapas as appetizers, and the steak frites and scallops for dinner. Â They were all excellent, although I think the meatball tapas were a tad pricy (two meatballs for $6).
(2) Atmosphere - we sat near, but not too near the bar. Â There was a great piano player and lots of life. Â Still, we were able to carry on a conversation without screaming. Â A fun place!
(3) Service: Our server and the person who brought us our food (why were they different?) were knowledgeable and personable. Â Their recommendations were mostly spot on.
Cons:
(1) Dessert - It was just ok - apple pie a la mode. Â When we mentioned to the owner, he recommended we get the chocolate mousse next time - as they make that on premises.
(2) Host - When he seated us, he didn't pull out the seats. It seemed a little rushed.
Overall - a BIG improvement over the Italian restaurant that had inhabited the site. Â Would make a great place for a private party.
We came in from out of town and tried a variety of tapas and main dishes. Everything was amazing -- incredibly  imaginative comfort food in a variety of forms. Faves included mussels (our 8 yr old!), bacon wrapped dates w/ blue cheese, fish tacos, and steak-and-mushroom pie. Great bar to, and a folk duo was playing to a rapt crowd. highly recommended.
Review Source:Ended up at Highland Place because they were the only restaurant that didn't have a 45 minute wait on a Friday night. We decided to eat in the dining room over the bar. Our waiter was nice and polite but seemed to be very new. I felt like they had a smaller menu then most places which is fine just not a lot to choose from. All of our meals were ok. One thing that we couldn't get past was a horrible odor that the dining room had. Smelled very moldy and wet... Like wet dog. Really was a turn off!!!
Review Source:The food is really quite good. Beat salad, burger, french onion soup (we didn't order any entrees). The burger is really top notch. It comes on very good bread and with very good fries. The service was a little slow (the owner wound up taking our order). Hopefully they'll improve that.
