I ordered some pizza from this place for pickup... as I walked into HomeMade Pizza, I was expecting just a regular pizza place but what I found was so much worse. Â I walked up to the counter and told them my name, paid for my pizza, and the hipster that worked there went to a little shiney metal box and started digging through it. Â I thought to myself, oh, a little oven to keep the food warm as individuals wait... Â but what it actually was, was a fridge! Â They made me pay $16 for a cold pizza, not showing me it was a cold pizza before they rang me up. Â I asked why it wasn't cooked, and they said it was strictly a bake-and-take place. Â There were 3 losers working in this place. Â Why would they need 3 losers to make 1 frozen tombstone looking pizza? Â It's freaking ridiculous. Â So, already having paid for this, I decided to take it home.
Keep in mind, I dont have an oven. Â I had to cut the pizza into pieces to put into a toaster oven. Â This pizza was DEFINITELY not meant for this, but what else was I suppose to do at this point in my life? Â So I cooked it, it was entirely average tasting.
The fact that this place is in business, AND that it has GOOD reviews, is beyond my imagination. Â This place is pretty much a scam; pizzas are next to nothing to make, and the largest amount of money put into them is from the actual cooking. Â The most, ABSOLUTELY INSANE thing about this place, is that it offers you delivery. Â DELIVERING COLD PIZZA RIGHT TO YOUR DOOR. Â YOU HAVE TO TIP AND PAY DELIVERY CHARGE FOR A COLD PIZZA. Â Just go to Jewel, buy 3 tombstone pizzas for $12, and save yourself from this place. Â OR order some pizza, that is cooked, from somewhere else. Â
If you are a hipster, yuppie, or overall loser, you'll probably think this is the coolest thing in the world and want to try them. Â If you are a normal person, just don't do it.
The first two experiences we had here were excellent - they gluten free pizza is amazing and they do a great job at eliminating cross contamination. So delicious. My husband loves the Miesian pizza - a very simple margharita pizza. We also love the Big Salad - so, so yummy!
The last experience we had was extremely disappointing. We ordered online and chose delivery because both my husband and I were very sick and just needed some food. The online system said it would be delivered within the hour. An hour passed. An hour and a half passed. We called, they said they were very busy that night and the pizza had not left for delivery yet. My husband explained that the online system indicated it would be delivered within the hour and the employee explained that the online system gives just an estimate. She was very defensive.
Our pizza arrived 2 hours after it was ordered. And we did not so much as receive an apology for the delay from Homemade Pizza Company. In fact, they were defensive about the reason it was so late. So unprofessional! Disappointing.
I have only the best things to say about their salads, yes salads. Â I know its a pizza place but I may the one person who still wont buy a pizza she has to cook at home. Â If its getting delivered, it better be ready to eat.
This is why I eat their salads, I've had the Cabo Salad several times and each time it's amazing. Â The ingredients taste so fresh and the honey lime vinagrette is delicious! Â
I put the fresh salad to the test today. Â I bought it last night intending to eat it today for lunch.. and it was still as fresh as could be! Â You are my only place for salads!
I love HomeMade Pizza Co!!! Yes you do have to bake the pizza at home but it's not rocket science.
While it is a bit pricey (avg. price for medium sized pizza is $15.75) HomeMade uses all natural ingredients and it's definitely a healthier option than ordering some fatty deep dish. Love the Miesian and the BLT.
I recommend ordering a salad to go w/ your pizza too if you have a couple people you're sharing with. Ooh and don't forget to order up a big chocolate chip cookie for dessert and to be extra fatty top it w/ ice cream (reminds me of the pizookie from BJs in CA).
The cutie pie kit is something cute and fun to get if you wanna make pizza w/ ur fam or friends. We ordered a box and made pizzas w/ our lil cousins and they had fun makin their own personal pan sized pizza. The kit comes w 3 choices of toppings, 5 pizza doughs, lil chef hats and aprons.
Ooh and they have a loyalty program order 10 pizzas get one free!
Color me addicted to HomeMade Pizza Co.
When I have a fierce pizza craving, but I don't want to break the calorie bank, I always go for HomeMade. Â Here's why: Sugar-free whole wheat crust that's super thin (read: not overly bready), tomato sauce, lots of veggie toppings like roma tomatoes, caramelized onions, spinach and roasted garlic and a nice portion of lean protein like plain grilled chicken done cheeseless is the way to go. Â
Cheeseless pizza is slightly sacrilege, but hey... sometimes you gotta do it. Â And when you top it with lots of yummy veggies and chicken I promise you'll hardly miss the cheese. Â Okay, you will miss it, but it's not bad!
The staff is amazingly friendly, too. Â
Can't go wrong with HomeMade!
Ordered the sausage and carmelized onion pizza on Monday evening. Â The ingredients are good quality, and the sausage was tasty. Â The instructions on how to make the pizza at home are useful and the cooking process went just fine. Â My complaint about the pizza is that there isn't enough of the ingredients to make the pizza truly satisfying. Â The crust is too bready and it sort of puffed up and there's too much crust relative to sauce and cheese. Â It ends up being slightly dry as a result. Â There isn't that stringy mozzarella satisfaction you want from a pizza. Â Also, the crust needs a brushing of olive oil or a roll in cornmeal or some fix to the texture. Â The crust is a bit bland tasting as well.
We also got an oatmeal raisin cookie (which you bake at home). Â The cookie was buttery and yummy, although I think it could have benefited by a few more raisins.
It wasn't terrible but I wouldn't order from here again.
I love this place. Â The kind of ingredients that they have available make it super unique and something that only true foodies would think of. Â There is really nothing better than a fresh baked pizza from HMP. Â And their Cabo salad is the bomb too. Â That dressin', it's scrummy.
Yeah, its expensive but its delish, so whatevs!
The pizza is good, no doubt about it. Â It is over-priced but it's so tasty!
The one star is given because of my experience today. Â I ordered a pizza online for pick-up. Â I paid for it online and authorized a charge for a certain amount and I received a confirmation e-mail that stated my card was charged for that same amount. Â When I arrived at the store to pick up my pizza, the charge slip they had me sign was for a different (higher) amount. Â I disputed this with the cashier who was very unhelpful. Â
I wish I could go back and eat pizza but I just can't go to a place that tricks me like that.
My last experience here was so fab (hence the 5 stars) that I've been craving their pizza and salad ever since. Â The hubby and I recently went back on a Sunday night to pick up a few salads...look at us being healthy!
I attempted to order the Cabo salad, but they told me they were out of avocado and grape tomatoes...half the ingredients! Â I asked them to replace the grape tomatoes with the tomatoes they use on their pizza. And also ended up ordering one of their small individual pizzas with mushrooms (so much for healthy).
When I got home I opened my salad and all I saw was lettuce, tomatoes and onions. They forgot the tortilla strips, cheese and I'm pretty sure a few other ingredients! The salad tasted as sad as it looked, but fortunately I had my mushroom pizza to make up for it.
It's worth noting that the hubby was pleased with his pear and goat cheese salad, but I think next time I'll probably just stick with their pizzas over salad.
Amazingly tasty pizza- its all about the crust! Also, the fresh ingredients make such a huge difference from frozen ones.. My boyfriend and I tried one pizza with feta and basil and another with black olives and mushrooms, and they were both delicious.
The price is kind of a bummer, though.. If I'm baking it myself, I don't want to pay delivery prices for a pizza.
Obsessed. Â I am absolutely obsessed with the HomeMade Pizza Company. Â Now, I had heard about it for years but as someone that doesn't even know how to operate an oven, there was never an appeal. Â Snag a fab husband that cooks and add in a free pizza coupon courtesy of the Yelp Summerfest, and viola! Â
Since my first pizza, I have averaged a pizza a week from these guys. Â I was feeling a bit unhealthy so I tried their salads. Â They are, AMAZING. Â Who would have thought that a pizza place could make fantastic salads?
It's damn good pizza but when you're lazy like me, you'd much rather slip someone $20 more to cook it for you.
The salads are DELISH, the service is super friendly, and I LOVE how many interesting pizza options there are, but again, I just really have to hit home with the laziness factor... ooh- and add in a little of the "I can barely boil water" factor and it's just not a five star combo.
If they throw in the person to cook the pizza for ya, I'd TOTALLY give it the 5 star bump. Love this place and you will too.
When I didn't feel like cooking and told my boyfriend, "I could eat the shit out of a jimmy johns," he suggested HomeMade instead ...yay boyfriend! Taking initiative! I love when he does that.
In any case, we had a bajillion coupons for HomeMade and live only a few blocks away, so we gave it a try. Â We went with the sausage and caramelized onion pizza (med. size). Â I worried about baking it in our wacky oven where I can never successfully make a pizza (with trader joes pizza dough), but it turned out great! Â Crust was perfect. Â The sausage and sage was lovely together, but I wish it had more sauce...it needed some zip. Â This doesn't mean I won't order HomeMade again, I will. Especially when I can walk over to Olivia's to pick up some beer to go with my za. Yes, I said "za."
After a long day of work, my roommate and I decided to order a delicious pizza pie. Â As time passed and my hunger persisted, I began to mull the idea of eating my hand. Â Whoo, finally the delivery guy came, that could have been disasterous. As my roommate answers the door and they exchange US currency for pizza pie, I noticed something peculiar, something I had never encountered in my long history of ordering delicious pizza pies. Â
"Roommate, I don't think that pizza is cooked." Â
"You're right, roommate, it's not." Â
"WTF!"
I'm not an idiot, I just play one on TV.
They don't cook for you?! Â What kind of place is this?! Â
Well, I will tell you right now, it's delicious. Â Thanks to the awesome ladies at Yelp, Homemade Pizza hooked me up at Summerfest with a coupon for a FREE pizza! Â Of course, we really enjoyed their yummy nosh at Summerfest, so we went out that same weekend to cash in our coupon. Â
The staff are exceptionally nice here. Â They asked if I had ever been in before and explained their entire process to me. Â All-natural ingredients come together to form an awesome pizza that you bake in your oven at home. Â Your choice of crust, toppings, everything. Â My recommendation: whole wheat crust. Â I don't care what you put on top of it, but the whole wheat crust really adds a nice nutty flavor to the pizza that is super yummy. Â They have a few pizza ideas for you in case you don't want to build your own pizza, but you can really do whatever you want. Â There's a good choice of salads and they come in two sizes so you can share with a friend if you're so inclined.
I will say that I was impressed with my visit. Â Everyone was really nice, they upgraded me to a large pizza AND threw in a huge cookie (which you also bake in your oven) for free. Â That's what I call class. Â However, I still can't get over the prices at this place. Â I obviously didn't have to pay for anything so I loved the place even more, but the pizza is pretty pricey. Â I don't know if I can get over a place that charges me MORE than some other pizza delivery places to bake the food myself. Â They will deliver for you, but it's still raw when you get it and that'll cost you about $20 for a large pizza. Â I can pay the same at Pizza Metro and get a fully cooked, delicious pizza that requires no work outside of eating it. Â So I'll probably go back, but only rarely because I don't really need to go pick up raw pizza for $20 to bake in my oven. Â Sigh.
So I have never tried any of these take home pizzas before, because either I want it cooked for me or I want to make my own. But I was at a friend's place yesterday and we were doing crafty stuff and when you have a bunch of girls, pizza (that is semi-healthy) is good.
I was amazed at how much I liked the pizza and we had it delivered and it was so fast!! Granted it was a Wednesday night, but still! It was very very good and I plan on going again at the one close to me!
Um, I had no idea how good this place was. Â We have now tried it three times and have been VERY happy each time. Â The whole-wheat crust is tasty, crispy, and satisfying (we cook the pizza a bit longer than the recommended time in order to achieve more if a crispness), and the toppings are always fresh and delicious. Â Every combination we've had (we've gotten several of the combinations on the menu) has worked beautifully. Â I don't think you can go wrong with any of them.
But it's not just the pizza -- the spinach salad is fabulous. Â My boyfriend and I gobble it down every time as if it is made with crack cocaine. Â Yes, spinach salad. Â Who knew? Â
We are big fans.
I was really shocked by how good the pizza at this place actually was for two reasons. 1) Seems like a douchy name and a douchy concept. If I'm paying your for it, why the hell do I have to go home and make it myself? Don't you usually do pizza on nights when you don't wanna cook, when you don't even wanna stand because work was so soul-sucking? and 2) It seems like there's a built in scapegoat here. Since you don't make pizza til you get home, if it turns out it sucks, it's too late to complain. With an ordinary pizza place you could just call up and talk to someone about your shitty pizza, but AH, if you made it yourself, they're totally not liable. YOU probably just fucked it up when you COOKED it. Nothing they can do. Everyone else's turned out fine.
Ok.
Well, the pizza was delicious. I stuffed that thing in my mouth like a squirrel does nuts. I stored some in my cheeks for the next day at work, and for the ride home on the train. I would hibernate with this stuff.
Ended up ordering the wild mushroom something and the spinach pie. Spinach pie- yes yes yes. The combination of the whole-wheat crust and the pine nuts tasted great with the goat cheese, spinach and other magical ingredients. Whoa, whoa, I used "mushroom" and "magical" in the same sentence. Is someone gonna flag this review?
I love this place.
It's a simple (yet awesome) concept. I highly recommend the wheat crust-- it's fantastic, & I've never gone wrong with their seasonal pizza... I believe it's currently some sort of Vidalia onion & pepperoni? It's delicious. Hands down.
I know it's a little pricey for a 'bake it yourself' deal, but for some reason I always feel a lot classier when I feed my boyfriend this instead of a Jack's pizza. Go figure.
Get it. Try it. Love it.
Oh, & their salads are great too, & you can order pints of Bobtail ice cream... a great way to really jazz up a weeknight.
Did I die and go to pizza heaven? Â Once again this is one of the many wonderful places in the city that I can eat pizza without tomato sauce. Â They have both pesto and olive oil sauces I can pick from with about 30 different fresh and amazing ingredients to top the pizza off with. Â Not to mention I can pick whole wheat or original crust. Â Honestly, could this place get any better?!?! Â I couldn't dream up a better place. Â
Oh wait, yes this place can get better, their pizza is NEVER cold. Â NEVER! Â Why you ask. Â Cause I bake it in my oven at home when I want it and have hot, fresh, yummy pizza when I want it. Â It's a BEAUTIFUL concept.
I have to admit I was confused myself , one night we called and ordered a pizza from them, not once were we told you would have to cook it yourself...lol , when it arrived it was in a plastic ag, I looked at the delivery guy puzzled, paid the man and he was on his way, we all started laughing ...the cookie dessert and pizzas on the kitchen counter, raw! Â However after we cooked it all everyone was pleased...so its now my new pizza joint!
=]
I'm with Nik and others who thought this was the dumbest idea ever. Paying for pizza you have to cook at home.
Was thinking about ordering a pie from Piece but since the Bears were playing figured that was going to take awhile. All the reviews I have seen about HomeMade Pizza Co. had been positive, so we thought we would give it try.
The selection of toppings are great you can also get your pizza with whole wheat dough, so bonus points there.
It took them about 20 minutes to get everything together and only took about 10 minutes to cook. That is a lot quicker then when ordering from your average pizza place. The pizza crust has a great flavor and if you cook it right, it can come out perfect. It would really suck if you burned it. Â It is great to have hot fresh pizza, no fun when your pizza is delivered cold.
I'd definitely do HomeMade Pizza Co. again.
This pizza is delicious. The crust is flavorful, the toppings are fresh and the overall experience was great.
I subtracted 1 star for the price...it is a bit pricey for a take and bake pizza. I would still go back because Homemade Pizza Co. sure beats some of the craptacular pizza joints in the neighborhood.
Five stars! Â I order it once a week. Â At least.
PLUS they have a most delicious cookie that you can bake in your oven and top with, I repeat top with, the most delicious Bobtail ice cream made just for Homemade. Â They used to just have the cookie, but some genius decided to sell ice cream to go with it. Â And everyone knows ice cream doesn't have any calories if it is on top of a cookie.
I urge everyone to go here . . . because if they went out of business, I really don't know what I would do!
Their concept is great & the quality, excellent. I love gourmet food, so in terms of pizza, Homemade Pizza Co is the place for me! I appreciate the clean, minimalist look, and the fact that everything is made in view of the customer.
I usually get 1/2 Spinach Pie (fresh spinach w feta, sundried tomatoes, roasted garlic, pine nuts, oregano over an olive oil glaze) & my boyfriend gets 1/2 pepperoni & blk olives. Always extremely tasty!! Also, the choco chip cookies are fantastic!
This is an interesting concept. You go in and order your pizza, they make it for you and you can bake it at your own convenience. I, of course, had no idea that this was how it's done. I was just driving by when i saw the sign and thought it would be awesome since they seemed to make made to order pizza. Being allergic  to tomatoes (yes I know its weird) I am always up for trying a place that customizes your pizza.
I went in and the atmosphere was awesome. The people behind the counter were very friendly and polite. I ordered my pizza with a pesto base and thinking it like a Subway type place, I started ordering a bunch of toppings  - big mistake. The girl taking my order never told me that I could choose from one of the pre-set meals, which is actually cheaper. So i ended up getting a 9inch for about $15 which i think is ridonkulous. As the words (regarding the price) came out of her mouth, I almost pooped in my pants (I feel this is a recurring theme and may be a problem related to something else and not really shock :) .  Turns out each additional
topping is between 1.25 and 1.75 and certain toppings count as two.
I should have known and read the board carefully, but it's one of those things that you don't notice when you're really hungry and I would have hoped the person behind the counter would have mentioned that to me since she knew this was my first time as she told me (after the order)
that I have to bake it myself.
The pizza itself was yummy but very very greasy (in all fairness what pizza isn't?). The options for toppings were awesome but pricey. It was a good pizza and I may go back but i will of course be better prepared. The 3 starts may go up or down, I'm a little grumpy right now, but will update this post soon.
I don't understand the appeal of this place, maybe somebody needs to explain it. Â I have had the pizza on several different occasions, I have a friend who delivers here and sometimes brings left over at the end of the day pizzas. Â The crust cooks up greasy, the cheese is greasy, if you get any meat on this pizza watch out. Â If I didn't get it for free I would likely not have tried it more than once.
That said, I do like the concept of this type of pizza. Â Why is it that nobody can really get it down?
First thing you need to know before reading what I have to say is that I am very skeptical about finding good pizza in general and extremely skeptical about finding good pizza in Chicago. (I have spent most of my life living in New Jersey and New York and enjoying wonderful wonderful pizza there).
During the short time I spent living in Chicago I never went near this place, partly because the concept seemed odd and partly because it always seemed empty. Turns out I have been missing out.
I don't care what any of the negative reviews say. You cannot get frozen grocery store pizza that is as good as this. It's fresh for one and the ingredients are high quality. Delicious meat toppings and fresh cheeses and spices.
Crust is always a major issue for me. Maybe it didn't have the cornmeal on the bottom that I always look forward to and maybe it didn't have a brick oven taste, but it ranks way up there above most of the pizza crust i have tasted in chicago. It might even (sad to say) be the best crust I've had here.
The sausage and carmelized onion was my favorite, the miesian was good and I only tasted a small bite of the hawaiian but that was good too. You have to leave it in till the cheese is browned enough on the top.
I would love to go back and try the salads sometime since they looked great. The cookie was excellent (we didn't buy one, just tried the samples in front, but i'm sure it would be even better straight out of the oven).
And if you're a chicago resident and really want a taste of "ny style pizza" go here because any of the other ny style places in my experience anyway have been very bad and not a good representative of ny pizza. This is closer (just imagine how good it will be when you're in ny and get the added bonus of brick oven flavor) and very very good.
What a stupid F*%*in idea this is.. you order a pizza to bring it home and cook it? How dumb is that? Not even as clever as that episode of Seinfeld where you go to bake your own pie... what type of idiot would even go here? --?????
Okay so those where my initial thoughts about homemade- Then I tried it ..(actually got a free pizza--- FREE!) and was like "whoa" this ain't bad at all-- it's easy ( I really like the whole paper that you put in the oven with it-- keeps clean-up easier) and the pizza tastes great, I especially like the crispy crust!
I must admit my preliminary skepticism was dead wrong-- Although it still can't compete with having a freshly hot cooked pizza at your door in 30 min. It has it's place.. and I'm now one of the idiots down with the program-- ;)
Kind of Love this place. Â The love was cemented when I accidentally called another HomeMade Pizza Company and placed my order, then walked across the street to pick it up, and they didn't have it. Â They were so nice about it. Â Called the armitage store and cxled my order, and rushed my order, and apologized- Â It was all my fault- Â Â But thank you for fixing it and making me not feel like an idiot.
It is across the street from my house, It is always delicious, the wheat crust is wonderful, and it looks like such a clean operation. Â I might never order a cooked pizza again!
Oh my goodness, this place is awesome! Â Seriously, the pizza is so tasty and very fresh (much more "gourmet" than I expected). Â Speaking of fresh, get a big salad - they are delicious. Â I didn't love the pizza that I ordered (I think it was called the Savory pizza), but I'm still giving Homemade Pizza 5 stars because I have a lot of confidence that everything else will be good. Â
And by the way, you should order a cookie. Â I dare you to NOT eat it before you bake it. Â (Trust me, its hard.)
Great selection of ingredients, however the prosciutto they use as a topping is much too salty. We picked ours up on the way home and it was very convenient, much faster than waiting for delivery. They need to come up with sturdier bags to carry it home in though instead of see-through plastic, the pizza was dancing around all over the place.
The interior is SWEET. Very clean-cut white and minimalistic. I love the huge chunky metal windmill part(?) on the wall. Overall, great for super-fresh pizza at home. Best if you have a pizza stone.
I have a problem. Â I cannot think about Homemade Pizza Company without ordering it. Â My mouth starts to water and I can't get this place out of my head. Â Yup, I've done it, now I am going to HAVE to order it for dinner tonight!
This pizza is REMARKABLE! Â They deliver it to you (or you can pick it up) unbaked. Â When are ready to eat you put it in the oven for 10-15 minutes, let it cool, slice and enjoy! Â I will say slicing is the biggest pain here, but it is well worth it. Â I know you are hesitant --- why would I buy pizza I have to bake myself? Â Trust me, it is well worth it.
A couple of baking tips:
- if you have an older oven like I do, rotate the pizza halfway through
- better to over bake then under bake --- make sure the pizza is golden and bubbly!
My favorite pizzas are:
The Miesian - Classic Italian Margherita-fresh Roma tomato, roasted garlic, tons of basil and creamy Mozzarella with a red sauce base
Spinach Pie - Mounds of fresh spinach with Feta cheese, sundried tomatoes, roasted garlic, pine nuts, and a hint of oregano over an olive oil glaze.
Sausage and Caramelized Onion - Italian sausage, sweet caramelized onion, Asiago cheese and a dash of sage top a bed of HomeMade cheeses and ruby tomato sauce.
The "Quattro Stagioni" has been my least favorite the pizza toppings include prosciutto, artichokes, wild mushrooms, kalamata olives --- I thought they would be spinkled all over the pizza, but they are actually in separate quadrants of the pizza.
Also don't miss their salads! You cannot go wrong with the spinach salad or the pear and blue cheese salad. They also just added giant cookies that you can bake while your pizza is cooking for a warm, gooey, delicious dessert. Â Do not hesitate to try Homemade Pizza Company!
