My wife and I love Hong Kong Chinese Restaurant. Â We've never been disappointed with our meals and the couple that run the restaurant are friendly and kind. Â We order carry-out and the food is always ready on time. Â Give Hong Kong a shot if you're looking for good Chinese food in Rogers Park!
Review Source:Mildly food poison me once: Shame on you.
Mildly food poison me twice: Shame on me.
The food is average American Chinese; the first time everything was a little dry, and the second time my beef chop suey was pretty greasy and rubbery.
I wouldn't say they gave me full-on out-for-two-days food poisoning, but I did feel ill and light-headed and my body didn't keep the food in me for very long. Enough for me to not have any plans on returning.
I've eaten here twice and both meals were take out. The first meal I had was Sweet and Sour Chicken Dinner combo. The sweet and sour chicken had the sauce poured on it already which in my opinion makes it soggy by the time you get home. Also staplilng the lid down does the same thing b/c it traps all the steam in and makes the dish soggy. The taste was good though. Here's what I really like about Hong Kong. Â The dinner combo comes with Chicken fried rice, unless you get a Lo Mein dish. 1 egg roll, 2 fried chicken wings and 1 crab rangoon... and it's $5.25 to $6.45 and it's tons of food. Definitely enough for 2 or 2.5 meals. For the price it can't be beat!
My second meal was Sesame Chicken and it was okay. I probably won't order that again. It was drowning in sauce and soggy. However, my roomie got the Generals chicken and it was delish. I will def order it the next time I go. A friend ordered the Egg Fo Young and he loved it.
It's not the best Chinese food I've had but it's definitely not the worst.
Again, for the price and all the food you get it can't be beat..
I guess next time I get the S and S chicken I'll ask for the sauce on the SIDE!
PS: You can get half a dozen Almond Cookies for 1.00 and their good.
Never again. Â I ordered from Hong Kong because I read that they were fast and inexpensive. Â Inexpensive, yes, but it has been over an hour and my food is still not here. Â They are less than a mile from my house. Â I just got a call from the driver. Â He told me that he is on his way. Â There are better places in Rogers Park, maybe more expensive, but who cares.
Review Source:Right down the middle of the road. Â If I were taking a customer satisfaction survey, I would reply "Meets Expectations" for just about every facet of the restaurant.
Service is exactly what you would expect. Â Not too cold, not too warm. Â Although, I will say that one time, my food was ready in the promised 15 minutes except that they left the egg roll for the end, which took an additional 7-8 minutes. Â Not much in the grand scheme, but poor kitchen management.
Prices are tough to beat--$1.95 for small soup, most small main dishes in the $3.75 range.
Fried shrimp: Â C, too greasy and bready
Egg drop soup: Â B+, surprisingly flavorful but not salty
Egg roll: Â C, vegetables should be crisper
Moo shoo: Â C+, again vegetables seem overcooked
Chicken with snow peas: Â B-, fresh vegetables, somewhat bland
Shrimp fried rice: Â B-, tasty but not too heavy or greasy, needs more vegetables
This place has some really cheap Chinese food. And the chefs are great at doing any sort of speical orders -- whether its more spics, less salt, or whatever you want. The food here is good, not the best Chinese food in the world, but at around $5 dollars an entree, you really can't complain much.
