I can't believe Taqueria Hernandez is on here! Â I grew up around the corner from this place and they serve, in my opinion, the best tacos in the city. Â I know! Â Their steak tacos are so good. Â They serve them with lettuce and tomato, which might offend some onion-and-cilantro purists out there. Â It's okay, I get it. Â But their steak is nice and crispy, and the tortillas are so corn-y. Â Add some lime and salsa verde and I am in taco heaven. Â Their tortas and tostadas are pretty bomb, too.
The service is friendly and super duper quick, and you get used to seeing the same guys working the flat-top. Â I never got adventurous enough to try and strike up a conversation (my Spanish is middling at best), but I always imagined becoming a friendly regular here.
For the record, this place is pretty old-school. Â I'm not sure they take credit cards, and they're not trying to reinvent the wheel with their food. Â But every time I'm up in Rogers Park I make a point to stop in for some tacos.
The food was decent but the portions could have been bigger. Â The torta is small and could use more meat. Also there were a bunch of gang members looking hard at me and my girl friend whistling at her when we stepped out. I'll go again when I turn gangster which is never because we didn't feel safe when we left.
Review Source:The reason I went there was because the dining area was filled with Hispanic people, which tells me the food is authentic and legit! So far, I've gotten the steak tacos, steak burrito, and tortas, and everything was great. The food was fresh, hot, and delicious. I usually order to go and I eat at home.
Great stuff. Perfect when you're REALLY hungry!
