I can't believe Taqueria Hernandez is on here!  I grew up around the corner from this place and they serve, in my opinion, the best tacos in the city.  I know!  Their steak tacos are so good.  They serve them with lettuce and tomato, which might offend some onion-and-cilantro purists out there.  It's okay, I get it.  But their steak is nice and crispy, and the tortillas are so corn-y.  Add some lime and salsa verde and I am in taco heaven.  Their tortas and tostadas are pretty bomb, too.
The service is friendly and super duper quick, and you get used to seeing the same guys working the flat-top.  I never got adventurous enough to try and strike up a conversation (my Spanish is middling at best), but I always imagined becoming a friendly regular here.
For the record, this place is pretty old-school.  I'm not sure they take credit cards, and they're not trying to reinvent the wheel with their food.  But every time I'm up in Rogers Park I make a point to stop in for some tacos.

The food was decent but the portions could have been bigger.  The torta is small and could use more meat. Also there were a bunch of gang members looking hard at me and my girl friend whistling at her when we stepped out. I'll go again when I turn gangster which is never because we didn't feel safe when we left.

The reason I went there was because the dining area was filled with Hispanic people, which tells me the food is authentic and legit! So far, I've gotten the steak tacos, steak burrito, and tortas, and everything was great. The food was fresh, hot, and delicious. I usually order to go and I eat at home.

Great stuff. Perfect when you're REALLY hungry!

good, cheap, everyone else in the place was speaking Spanish. however, I didn't get the consumate Torta experience I was seeking, although I have no complaints.

Tasty if not messy burriots; bring your spanish.  They have a diverse soda cabinet ice cooler. Juicy con lechuga.  Good spot on a street where there are more choices.  I also had a small candy by the register which was tan and sugary.  This was the highlight of the inexpensive, quick meal.  I would go back.

I always order a vegetarian burrito here (not on the menu).  It's very good.  I would give five stars if I hadn't had the experience of finding meat in the burrito 8 out of 10 times I've been there.  But it's great otherwise and the horchata is excellent.  From now on I'm going to eat there and point out the meat to them so they are more careful.

It's cheap, but it's also bad, especially when compared to other places around the area. The steak was bland, greasy, and a there was a little gristle to it. The burrito I had was just a soggy mess.

I love this place.  Ive been eating here for 10 years.  When I was pregnant I would take the train and bus in rain, snow, etc...just for 2 steak tacos.  Yes, the steak tacos are greasy. But I love the cheese.  And I would like to add that you can just come in and sit down.  I've never ordered at the counter unless I was taking it to go.  The food comes sooooo hot....never cold.  Love the 2 hot sauces.  The green is my fav. The red is the HOT one and the green is still hot but more milder.  My 6 year old daughter is in love with this place as well.  When she attended school over there she would beg to go everyday.  Everyone I bring here becomes just as addicted as me.  They do have their on and off days but it doesn't stop me from coming.

I'm not sure why there's not more love for this place, but it's really good and pretty cheap. I'd also like to add that they do have a vegetarian burrito, not sure if that's new or not but I just picked one up for the missus. It's pretty authentic and I've been, along with most of my family, coming here for years. I would recommend taking your meal to go though, there's really not much in the way of decor.

After hitting the rest of the options on clark, between devon and howard, I would never go to Hernandez again. So many other, better options. No.

Here is one of the rare instances when I REALLY  need a half-star rating system.  2.5 in this case.

In my old Lunt-and-Sheridan-dwelling days, I would stumble in here some late nights every once in a while on my way home from some point south on Clark (and once from the Mark II...ugh).  I vividly remember one night in the early spring of 2002 when I got my burrito home, queued up an X-Files season 2 DVD, and then watched in horror as I lost control of my motor functions and poured the entire cup of hot green salsa into my burrito.  Since I was drunk, I tried to scrape it out and insisted on eating the whole thing despite my mouth being on fire.  (FYI--the red sauce is hot, the green sauce is HOT.)

It was adequate drunk food, but I'd never had it sober until tonight.  For $4.36 including tax I don't expect much, and wasn't disappointed.  The chicken burrito tasted fine, if a little bland.  It was actually satisfying without feeling too greasy or heavy.  However, I found several gristley pieces in the meat, and that is a dealbreaker for me.  Any time that I have to chew gingerly, for fear of crunching down on something that is not quite consumable but not quite solid either, is a bad meal.

I would consider coming back if the conditions were just right, but I won't get chicken again.

Well the prices are cheap.  The staff is friendly.  This place is close to my home, so I really do want to like it.  Honestly though, unless I really need a fix and it's super-cold out, I'll walk the extra block.

Unlike a few other places in the neighborhood, they have no vegetarian options.  Additionally expect a bit more than your fair share of grease, but a few slices of fresh avocado can make up for it!

This place is fantastic, authentic, and a great value.

Know that the "dining room" is pretty spartan as far as decor and ambience.  I come here for the made-to-order authentic Mexican food and don't mind waiting the several minutes it takes them to make it fresh.   You can also get your Mexi-fix to go.

It's a welcome change from the faux adobe hacienda-type places and that frozen-then-soggy microwaved junk that sits under a mound of chihuahua cheese and is delevered to you 90 seconds after ordering.

The chorizo burritos, tamales, tacos....all good.  They will add heat if you like, and also have red and green salsa.

This is one of the best Mexican restaurants in Rogers Park and there is definitely no shortage in the area.. The staff here is super friendly and the prices are extremely cheap and refreshing.  This place has a great atmosphere and is frequently filled with Loyola students
