Hidden gem of the North! Great beer specials (can't beat the bucket deals or the frozen Piña Colada)! Our family frequently takes the Charles Street bike path to the restaurant on the weekends so we can sit on the patio. Check out the weekend BBQ lineup, great stuff. Owner roams the restaurant and greets all, so rare to see that anymore.
Review Source:This is a wonderful building and space that appears, from the outside, to be an overachieving clubhouse to the TAM 9-hole postage stamp of a course in Niles. Â But it's really the Howard Street Inn with a little bit of clubhouse on the side. Massive amount of natural light streaming through circumferential windows. High ceiling. Many, many tv screens showing sports fare. Â A good bar that has a nice selection of beers - mainstream and craft. Â On their own, these attributes merit a short vacation in my day. Â But where HSI hits it out of the park is its food. Â It is so far beyond expectations that it's a little shocking. Â Somewhat typical menu descriptions are anything but. Â I give a toothsome nod to the new pulled pork and beef brisket sandwich offerings, but the star turn is provided by the turkey burger. Â This thing is the most delicious mess of a meal I know. Â The burger is wonderfully moist and topped with an Italian red pepper half, beautifully fresh half avocado, and a cheese slice. Â There's some kind of slathered white sauce on the ciabbata bread. Â The side red potato salad, skin on, is the crack of potato salad. Â Now, for those of you who insist on rising to a challenge, this burger is IMPOSSIBLE to eat without being reduced to a deconstructed mess in your hands and on your plate. Â Strangely, this is a good thing. The combination of layered slippery ingredients - the red pepper and avocado are the chief culprits - render the beautifully structured presentation moot during the plate-to-mouth engagement. But I find this to be its not-so-subtle charm. Â
Love this great 9-hole-in-the-wall restaurant. Â I hate golf, but that's another thing altogether.
This was our second time being here since last summer. Â Was a very crowded night with the NCAA tournament going on. Â Service was excellent. Â Started off with the pulled pork nachos and they were yummy! The six of us barely were able to finish them. Â My sons loved their chicken tacos and quesadillas. My wife had a plain burger and fries that she really liked. I ate the beef brisket and pulled pork combo plate and it was excellent. Â They serve it was mixed vegetables and fresh mashed potatoes. Â They also give you 4 types of BBQ sauce, a sweet sauce, spicy, mustard and vinegar. Â All 4 were good, but I really liked mixing the spicy and vinegar together! Â
Finally, we had the cinnamon/sugar dough balls for dessert (sorry, can't remember what they were called) and they were amazing! Drove over a 1/2 hour from Buffalo Grove to eat here and was definitely worth the trip! Â Will definitely be going back and bringing more friends!
PS, good beer selection too! Â Nothing better than Lagunitas IPA on tap!
I LOVE this place. Â My wife introduced me to this place a few years back and I fell in love with it. Â The food and environment is superb! Â You would never be able to tell that this place is a clubhouse to the golf course. Â
The last time we went there to meet friends, I was wearing my blackhawks jersey. Â To my surprise, they gave me a free pint of beer because I was wearing my jersey on game day. Â
Would definitely recommend the place for it's food, ambiance and friendly wait staff!
FYI...love their placement of all their TVs
I've been coming to HSI for years! Â After shooting 9 holes of golf, I could go home but why? Â Why not stay and kick back with a few beers! Â The outside patio has a great bar set up with TVs & plenty of seating, while the inside has multiple TVs with a new 80 inch flat screen to watch the games!! Â Summer months bring in the golfers and the softball players! Â Even in the winter months, HSI is a great spot to hang out and watch The Bears, BlackHawks & Bulls! Â The owner Kenny is a great guy and the bartenders and servers have always been friendly & attentive to whatever we need. Â Usually it's more buckets and shots but they do a great job taking care of our tables and making the night fun! The food has always been good...I'm a huge fan of their Buffalo Chicken Pizza, and burgers, but recently now on weekends they've been serving a new item on the menu "T-Baum BBQ". Â WOW! Â Was that stuff awesome!! Pulled Pork, Smoked Beef Brisket & Â Chicken!! Â Great addition to the menu!!
Overall, big fan of the HSI! Â Kind of like "Cheers", where everyone knows your name! Â Great food, great service, great fun! Â Stop in & see bartenders Beckie & Tommy for all your alcohol needs!!
My girls and I have gone to this spot several times and everytime we are pleased (and a little buzzzed) from our drinks. the food is not that great but that's not what we go there for. Usual crowd is: male, sports fans, golfers. The beer selection is good and the mixed drinks are worth the price. Nose level is pretty loud.
Go and try it.
We went there today for lunch and its very good. I had the pork chops with mashed and veggies. They were delicious. Hubby got soup and a sandwich and he loved it. It was 2 in the afternoon on a Saturday, so the place was kinda empty. The waitress was very nice. Prices are very reasonable! We will definitely be back.
Review Source:I had no idea this place even existed. Not that I am especially familiar with Niles. But I have driven thru and never noticed it. There is a golf course next to it. Not that would have helped.
My cousins' wife was throwing his surprise birthday party here.
Great outdoor space. Fire pit outside for evenings. If you're into that. I have to say the highlight was the staff. They were attentive, checking on our party throughout the night for refills, etc.
We call it "The Country Club"
I just love this place. Â Found it after golf and continue to go back there; even for dinners with my gal. Â
Their burgers and fries are great. Â They have really nice drink specials and even the pizza speaks to me from time to time.
It is just what you want when you are looking for bar food, but the outside patio brings it up to country club class...well almost.
Funny thing is that the in-laws were in for a weekend and when we took them to what we call "the country club", Â they had to laugh.
Keep it up HSI!
We were there yesterday. The service was very good. My wife's ribs were "nothing special," as she said, but she loved the grilled cheese sandwich. I had a breakfast burger (hamburger with egg in it), and while it was cooked better than a competitor's I like the competitor's version better solely because it's more seasoned. Still this is a nice place.
Review Source:Nestled in between a forest preserve and houses lie Howard Street Inn.
A cozy little bar with a wrap around outside seating area overlooking the golf course.
The menu is extensive, and features an amazing bleu cheese burger. Â Don't care much for the fries though. Â The food items are a little pricey. Â I know they have a daily deal groupon going on during the week days.
Ample televisions and seating. Â This is not the place to come to for a nice family dinner when there is a game on. Â You have been for warned.
This place is in the most random location in Niles. It's almost hard to find. Parking is limited, but it's usually not too hard to find a spot. I usually come here in the evenings, so I'm not sure what it is like during the day when the golf course is open.
I first tried Howard Street Inn sometime last Fall thanks to Groupon and I have come back several times since. I usually like going Thursdays for the $4.25 Martini specials. Martinis can be hit or miss though. I've had some that were really tasty and others that were waayy too strong. They also have a great deal on smaller appetizers-- my favorite being the pretzel bites with cheese. Not only is it a good place to grab a bite and get some drinks, but it is also a great place to watch sports games. I came here a couple times when the Bulls were playing and enjoyed it. Flat screen TVs surround the bar so you can watch the game from any seat in the house. They have free wi-fi here too, which is a plus. The bar is open late night until about 2am, which is great for the suburbs.
The crowd is a bit older, but everyone is super nice. The staff is really friendly and attentive too!
Last time I was here we sat out on the patio. So relaxing..loved it. Just my friends and some drinks, relaxing and talking. It was nice because it was a more intimate feel, almost like we were in someone's backyard.
I definitely recommend HSI for a chill night out.
I Have been to the Howard Street Inn a handful of times and really like the place. Â The service is good, food is good (great variety) and they always seem to have some good drink specials.. Â
In the warm weather you can watch golfers out on the greens. Â Very relaxing. Â Neat round comfortable room!
Give this place a try! Â You won't be dissappointed!!!
Just had another great dinner at HSI. They remodeled since my last visit and they did a great job. The atmosphere is so warm and inviting and the owner and all of his staff so friendly. There were 3 of us and we broke from our tradition of ordering ribs (awesome!) and each ordered a different burger, all were delicious. We are already planning our next visit!
Review Source:I met the girls here on a warm summer evening. The outdoor patio area is really nice. It's covered, so you're not directly in the sun, but still can be outside with a view of some of the golf course.
Our waiter was really nice too. He was very attentive and always asked if we needed anything without being intrusive. Even the bus boy was super nice, coming right over when he saw we were all done with our meal.
The food is tasty. I had some of their chicken noodle soup, which was packed with flavor, and their shrimp tacos, which were out of this world. The shrimp were sauteed to perfection and cooked with a great combination of herbs and spices. The salsa and yogurt sauce they give you to put on the tacos complement them well. I was torn between ordering the shrimp tacos and the fish tacos, because this is one of the only places you can order fish tacos where the fish isn't battered and fried.
The drink special was great too - any of their martinis for $3 (we went on a Thursday). The size was on the smaller end, but you can't complain for $3.
Quick tip: Howard Street Inn offers gift certificates on http://restaurant.com. I picked up one worth $10 for only $1.50. The waiter gave us no problems with it either.
The only reason I knocked a star off was that last time I went, I had the pizza, which was not very good - super thin, no spices, and bland. I'd skip the pizza if you go, but their other dishes have been very good.
Overall, it was a really pleasant evening catching up with my friends. I'd go back.
You go to Howard Street Inn to grab a seat at their outdoor area. The view is great, overlooking a lush scenic golf course. This golf/sports bar enables you to get some sunshine, a little bit of nature and a drink while catching a game. The food is good although they have changed the menu. The kitchen offers typical bar food: grilled cheese, quesadillas, burgers (including veggie burgers), salads, pizza, steak and even pork chops. Personally, I like the fish tacos. Service is attentive and the crowd is mostly golfers - which can be good or bad. I love that http://restaurant.com offers some great gift card deals from this place. I just spent a few bucks for a $25 gift card here! You can't beat that!
Review Source:L and I came here with a group of friends and we all had a pretty good time. Our waitress was VERY attentive, funny and nice. I give her two kudos for dealing with our VERY thirsty and slightly loud table.
Our appetizers were all NOM-tastic and quick to come out. The onion rings were plentiful, crispy and hit the spot for me AND ohhhh my - their Cinnamon Puffs are a must try!
Yes, HSI is PERFECT for ANY sports enthusiast. There are plenty of TVs, lots of beer specials and good food.
Bravo!
Mom took us out for lunch today. This has really become her new favorite spot. We had the skirt steak special which was both delicious and plentiful and Christopher had the steak medallions. His was tasty too. We had a coupon for free Cinnamon puffs and they were delivered piping hot and yummy. A really nice freebie.
The food is solidly good, perhaps not great, but what we love most is the relaxed atmosphere and really accommodating service we get here. The views are wonderful and the restaurant itself is attractive and clean. What's not to love?
I had never been in to the Howard St Inn before simply because I did not know that it even existed. The restaurant is located on Tam Golf Course, on In between Caldwell and Milwaukee on Howard St in Niles
On the day that I came to meet some friends for dinner, I was not having the greatest day, however after being greeted by a friendly waitress at the door, drinking one of the best Bloody Marys I have ever had (yum), and enjoying a great meal with some friends, I left feeling in MUCH better spirits!
The atmosphere was very friendly, great wait staff and laughing/chatting customers.
While the look of the restaurant is geared towards sports (many big screen tv's lining the whole oval shaped restaurant, leaving no blind spots at any seat in the house) I spotted a good deal of families eating dinner together.
Not to mention, there is a great patio surrounding the whole restaurant with a full bar located outside for a warmer season which is rare to find in this area!
I chose the Turkey Burger as my meal, as suggested by a friend who was I was dining with and it was SO good! I love Turkey Burgers, and this may have been the best one I have ever had.
A friend of mine had the Salmon dinner, and its presentation and taste (I tasted hers) was also great.
I have been telling as many people as possible about this hidden treasure and have been back a couple times since, and am looking forward to the patio in the summer!
Great view - golfcourse, nice waitstaff, good service, decent bar food, many TV's, and best of all terrific patio and outdoor bar in summer, reasonable drink specials every day of the week. Even if we are not golfing my husband and I go for dinner just to sit out on the patio overlooking the golf course. Thumbs way up!!
Review Source:Went out for drinks with some co-workers after a particularly long day of work. Â We ended up here because it was close, and didn't regret it. Â It is kind of middle of nowhere (at least for my city boy perspective).
Even with a pretty full bar, parking was a dream. Â When I got in, I learned that it was 3 dollar martini night. Â Granted, the martini list wasn't everything (Mostly super girly ones) but for 3 bucks? Â Yeah, I'll take an appletini, you wanna fight about it?
The food was decent bar food, nice selection of appetizers for not too high of a price. However, the bar itself was great. TV lines the perimeter of the bar, which leads to just about everyone cheering on The Greatest Athlete In The History Of The World® Michael Phelps. Also, the jukebox is about as good as it can get. Within about an hour, I heard Journey, Foreigner, Bon Jovi, and Def Leppard. These are bands that should be played at every bar, at all times.
If I lived closer, I would probably make the Inn a drinking staple, but as it is, it'll probably just be the occasional after work beer bar.
I didn't know this place existed until I played golf at the Tam, and now, it's like my own little country club on Howard Street (at least in the summertime it is). It offers your typical standard bar-type fare for lunch and dinner, and the prices are very good.
I have tasted a broad array of their high-fat appetizers, and was not particularly impressed. Had a few sandwedges also, and those are better -- burger, chicken. Nothing is inedible.
Personally I think the best thing on the menu is the HSI cobb salad. It's got mixed lettuce, corn, bacon, hard-boiled egg, tomatoes, cucumbers, bleu cheese and a grilled chicken breast. If is sounds huge, that's because it is, my little friend. It comes with honey mustard dressing on the side.
I heart protein so this salad is a fantasy world for me.
They offer lots of drink specials too. I highly recommend going on Thursday -- it's $3 "martini" night! Where the hell can you go booze in the city for $3 a pop? The Cherry Cheesecake martini is made with vanilla vodka and cranberry. Not really cherry, but it's very strong, so does it really matter?
The Northsider and the Sunburst martinis taste like kool-aid. Right up my alley. Is there any alcohol in there? After I knock back a few of those, I always catch a glimpse of flashing lights and a mug shot in my mind. Oh my goodness!
The inside of the restaurant is filled with big screen tvs and after work groups that are going for the cheap beer. There are kids and older people as well. It's a little smokey in there, so I prefer to sit outside on their patio and watch the golfers duff hole no. 9. They have put tv's outside as well now so you can view a variety of professional sporting events, or the Cubs. All the waitresses are young, nice and supercute, and they don't have any body fat.
It's fun!
The Howard Street Inn sits beside the Tam O Shanter Golf Course right off Howard Street in Niles. They have their own lot, so parking is not a factor.
The inside looks like a semi-circle and the building has a high ceiling with a cupola at the top. There are 12 large flatscreens inside, 7 lined up behind the bar, so you can follow multiple games at once. The Inn would be a great place to stop by during March Madness or College Gameday with this amenity at your disposal. There is a computerized jukebox inside as well.
The menu ranges approximately $5-$20 and has a little bit of everything. On the high side, some of the highlights are linguini, skirt steak, strip steak, lobster tail, salmon, perch, shrimp, and ribs. If you're looking to spend a little less go for a burger, bratwurst, deli sandwich, sub, wrap, soup, salad, or pizza. The service was really good; no complaints.
The Howard Street Inn has been added to the "must return to" list.
