It had been over ten years since I had been here when we came for Restaurant Week in January. We met another couple for dinner and had a wonderful experience. this place is just as good as I remembered it!
The decor is very warm and cozy. Fireplaces and lots of wood paneling. The service was great. It was VERY crowded for Restaurant Week. It took a few minutes for our server to acknowledge us, but after he did, the service was impeccable.
My husband had his usual bourbon and coke and the rest of us shared a bottle of wine. I didn't order it, not sure what it was, but it was great. I had the crab bisque, scallops and creme brulee. The crab bisque was so smooth and not "fishy". The scallops had a great sauce and the creme brulee has a perfectly crunchy top. My husband had the wedge salad, 6 oz filet and the cheesecake. He loves blue cheese and said it was one of the best salads he has had. The filet was cooked perfectly.
We are definitely coming back again. It's been too long, J. Gilbert!
Well, I keep going back to J. Gilberts. And I don't mind going by myself. I like to sit by the fireplace. The steak is very good, I like the ambience, the waiters and waitresses are always friendly to me and prompt. I like the mashed potatoes, the pan sauteed spinach and of course, the steak.....the filet mignon. I always order wine, which I enjoy and to finish the meal, I like the vanilla bean creme brulee. Reminds me of my Granny's pudding dessert. The bread comes to the table warm as it seems to be right out of the oven. The friends whom I have taken there love it also. One has decided it is HER favorite restaurant in town. She likes the crab cakes. Will continue to be a "regular" there. They even know where I like to sit every time. LOL
Review Source:I love J. Gilberts. Whether you are in the mood for a quiet, romantic dinner, or a cocktail with friends at the lively bar, J. Gilberts is the perfect place. Â The food is fantastic, and steak is top notch. Mmmm... I love the filet and the scallops with risotto. They offer some delicious sides too, like lobster mac and cheese, poblano potatoes au gratin and fresh vegetables. Â If you are a fan of fresh baked bread, and who's not, be sure to try the pastrami flavored butter. It's 100 times better than what you are thinking right now....
Don't overlook J. Gilberts as a place for happy hour or a lighter dinner, either. My favorite pineapple infused martini is on special from 4-6:30. I just can't get enough of these, but I must exercise some caution, as they tend to sneak up on me! Also during happy hour try the sliders or the smoked chicken quesadilla, both delicious!
*Pro Tip: Check in on Yelp and receive an order of Maytag blue cheese chips. A fun starter to any meal.
We came here for my birthday. It was good for a steakhouse, but nothing stood out to me as being amazing. I feel like for the price increase over the run of the mill chain steakhouse place that it wasn't worth it. Perhaps I'm wrong. I'd be happy to give it a second try, but that was my first impression.
Review Source:Like another reviewer here, I was there for the restaurant week. $30 for dinner per person is quite expensive for me, and I'm sure it's just "average" for those who are better off, but I did enjoy the experience and dishes. The lobster bisque soup is creamy and rich; the filet mignon I ordered (which costs $30 by itself if you come here on a "typical" day), medium rare, was perfectly grilled and probably the most tender and flavorful piece of filet mignon I've ever had. Wife ordered the scallop but just too little, like another reviewer here mentioned. However the meal ended with a generous serving and awesome crème brûlée.
I haven't dined on this side of Metcalf for a while, so I was pleasantly surprised it still has a high quality steakhouse in that area. And I can tell you Hereford House is no better than a regular steakhouse after you've tried J Gilbert's.
We went here for restaurant week...so I'm glad we tried it at a discount and didn't pay full price for getting sick (all of us) after we ate here. I will say the crab or lobster bisque we had was incredible. Â The Maryland chips were bland. The scallops as a dinner had a whole 4 on my plate. We had reservations for dinner but got placed in the bar in one of the most uncomfortable seats I've ever felt. The only reason I give this more than a single star was for the nice waitress and the bisque. I can't imagine coming here and paying that much to get sick enough to throw away leftovers the next day.
Review Source:I was quite impressed. I'm not from Kansas City, but used Yelp to pick J Gilbert's. Â I was not disappointed. We had a group of 10 and they handled it with ease. The three course fixed price menu is awesome if you are ok without picking the sides. I got a small steak with scallops, which were awesome. The truffle butter on the side is a must! Â The crab bisque was also great. The desert portions are large, especially for a price fixed menu. Highly recommended.
Review Source:This place has a gorgeous, dimly-lit, inviting decor. We went for my boyfriend's birthday dinner, and they added a few subtle touches to the table to make it special. Perfect for a more mature way of celebrating a birthday (ie, no clappy-singsong wishes or embarrassing dances by the staff). Â
Upon leaving, my boyfriend said it was probably the best meal he'd ever had! (He ordered the KC strip with a mushroom risotto) Â Hearing that from someone who doesn't get too enthusiastic about any kind of meal just made my night (and his!).
I definitely recommend this place for an intimate celebration or special occasion. Just be prepared to spend a pretty penny!
3.5 stars
Long story short: Overall a good dinner, but there just seemed to be something about the ambience that made it seem a little... casual?
Long story long:
My mom was in town visiting me and it was just a couple of weeks after my birthday, so she decided to take me out for a belated birthday dinner. Â I didn't want her to spend a terrible amount of money, plus also had to think about what she could eat, otherwise I would have made reservations at Ruth's Chris.
I'll be honest, when we first moved in, I immediately was hit with the ambience of the place. Â The restaurant felt... kind of like we were at an Olive Garden... I guess you can say the place stank of corporate ownership. Â Do you know what I mean?? I mean, the decor was nice, but I suppose being in what I could imagine used to be something like an Olive Garden, that's probably what it was.
Service initially seemed slow, as it took awhile for our server to make her initial appearance to take just our beverage order. Â I had looked over the menu prior to our arrival, and I had decided to get the prime angus bone-in ribeye, "cowboy cut". Â My mom got a ceasar salad for us to share and ordered the seared Georges Bank sea scallops for her entree. Â I had an option for 2 sides so I got Yukon smashed potatoes and sauteed spinach. Â My mom's scallops were served with a lobster risotto and champagne beurre blanc.
When our food arrived, it smelled and looked great. Â My steak was not a thick cut like I'm used to seeing at fine steak houses, but rather it was larger in circumference. Â It was seasoned well and cooked to my liking (medium rare of course). Â The sides were pretty standard... good, but nothing to write home about. Â I kind of liked my mom's lobster risotto and her scallops were cooked nicely.
Service continued to be at just par, as I guess I'm used to servers at fine steak houses being much more attentive, which probably added to the lowering of my rating.
Would I return? Â I guess for the price, I expected a little bit more, and unless someone else is paying, I'm not sure if I would return.
At my last visit to J. Gilbert's, four of us were celebrating my mother-in-law's birthday and to make things a bit more festive, we brought a cake. The hostesses were kind enough to hold it in the back for us as to keep it a surprise and provide us with candles. Unfortunately, nothing else that evening matched their service.
Our waitress was pretty bossy and kept interrupting our dinner and conversation, which irked me. We also informed her that we had brought a cake, yet she insisted on bringing us two of the desserts that came with the prix fixe menu. This normally wouldn't have bothered me, but I had heard the (friendly and upbeat) server at the next table offer to box theirs to go.
The food is good, of course, but never makes me eager to race back. The garlic broccolini is delish, but the poblano au gratin potatoes didn't have that comforting creaminess I would normally expect - plus, there were sections of them that were lukewarm and obviously reheated. The steak is well cooked, but again, nothing shockingly better than any other KC steakhouse.
This is it! Best steak i've had to date, right here in O.P. You always remember your first time, same thing here. Â Was here on a sunday, 1/2 price bottles of vino, que up that cowboy ribeye, and drink it all in. Â Ahhh, carnivore heaven,to which all others steaks will be compared to. Been back multiple times, and the cowboy never fails. Â Classic steakhouse, but not to stuffy. Great place for a pricey date, or to celebrate. Say it with me.. I WANT MY COWBOY
Review Source:From the standpoint of the waiter and the reservations process, J Gilberts did pretty well. Â Was entertaining a decent sized group.
Unfortunately, they did not handle the weather so well. Â It was very hot outside (100-degrees or more, fahrenheit). Â Apparently, the HVAC system struggled to keep up. Â There was a service tech on the roof when arrived for dinner. Â However, the restaurant never mentioned this on our way in. Â Nor did they offer to do anything when we commented on it ... politely ... several times. Â It made the dining experience less enjoyable.
The food was fine. Â The steaks were good. Â Mine was probably a little undercooked (which is amazing, since I asked for between rare and medium rare), and the guy across the table from me had his slightly over-cooked. Â Guy next to me had the grouper, and it was ok.
Again, I realize that the weather is out of the store's control, and the extreme weather does tax an HVAC system. Â However, for a premiere eatery, I would have expected a better response to the situation.
The pepper butter and crusty sourdough. Wow. It was all I could do not to eat all of the bread before I had even had my salad.
Did the Prix Fixe dinner with the blue cheese wedge salad, filet medallions and the chocolate cake.
The blue cheese dressing went quite nicely with the bacon and Gorgonzola pieces in the salad and I barely noticed the red onions.
Had the steak medium and that is indeed how they cooked it. The meat melted in my mouth, allowing me to savor the rosemary sauce with the mashed potato and grilled asparagus.
The dessert was included in the Prix Fixe but I really don't know how I put it away. Had I not done the PF meal, I would have skipped dessert--which would have been a mistake as the chocolate ganache on the cake was wonderful! Also the cake part wasn't too moist or dry--it was pretty much perfect.
I dinned alone (on biz) but wasn't ignored by the waitstaff. :)
I came here for a work function in January. Â By the time I arrived our group was already seated in a private room, so I can't speak to the ambiance of the restaurant. Â
They started us with beverages, and had a decent wine selection. Â I enjoyed a couple glasses of the J.Lohr cab over the course of the night. Â They brought out some appetizers which included calamari and tortilla chips with a cheese sauce. Â I had a couple bites of each, but neither were particularly memorable. Â I much preferred the fresh bread they brought out with butter. Â They had an odd flavor of butter, maybe roast beef flavored butter? in addition to regular butter. Â Â Â
For the main course, we had a few menu options to select from, and of course I chose the 6oz filet option. Â The filet was seasoned well and came out at the perfect temperature, with a side of asparagus and mashed potatoes. Â The food was delicious. Â While it seemed like the portions were smaller than expected, it was plenty of food.
For dessert we could choose between creme brulee and chocolate cake. Â I was in the mood for chocolate but would not have gotten it, had I known that it was going to be so rich and dense. Â Oh well, good for you chocolate lovers out there, I suppose. Â
In all, I think this place was pretty good. Â I'd recommend trying it if you're in the area.
J Gilbert's is a semi upscale restaurant that relies heavily on its atmosphere. It does a pretty good job of this.
The restaurant builds its whole ambiance off of its word fired steaks and has a couple of fire places strategically placed in the dining room for effect. Lights are kept low and the tables are tucked in to add to the intimacy.
Some at our table started off with an appetizer of bleu cheese melted over oven fried chips. It was a nice beginning. Most of the table opted to snack on the complimentary bread and butter. I decided to choose the 3-course prix (sp?) meal and began the night with the Maryland Crab bisque. It was pretty good. Â I followed it up with a 6 oz filet and a baked potato for my main course. Â The steak was cooked well, but I kind of wish it held a little bit of flavor for the price. Â Another at our table tried the salmon. Â She said it was delicious and even got a box to take some of it home. I finished the night with a vanilla cheesecake, which was nice and rich.
There was a little hickup with our service. Â After we were sat it took a while for us to have an appetizer order and then our main orders taken. Â Once this did happen everything seemed to flow okay, but we had an 8pm reservation and were all getting hungry. I also want to make it clear that I did enjoy my filet, but I did feel for the flavor and cut that it was a tad on the expensive side.
So to conclude, J Gilbert's is a good solid restaurant, but for the price, I would save it as a place to go on a special occassion, like a birthday, anniversary or graduation dinner
My wife and I have loved J. Gilberts for years. It's a regular on our list for special occasions like birthdays and anniversaries. Â It has a relatively un-assuming location at 89th and Metcalf as it's surrounded by strip malls and car dealerships. Â If you're not careful, you can drive right past it without notice. Â However, once inside, you feel as if you've stepped into one of the nicer restaurants on the County Club Plaza. You're warmly greeted at the desk and usually whisked away to a nice seat. Â I know everyone isn't a fan of a dimly-lit dining room, but I like it here. Â In the colder months, the blazing light and warmth from the multiple fire places add a unique ambiance to the experience. Â Also, the live music is often from the employees who work there. See my comments below for more about this.
This particular evening we both had starter salads. I had the Caesar salad and my wife had the baby greens. Â Ingredients were fresh and salads were good, but nothing memorable. It would be nice to see something more unique here instead of just standard salad fare.
I had the 18 oz. Prime Angus bone-In cowboy rib eye. I think rib eyes are simply the most flavorful steak in existence, and this one proved to be no exception. You can tell they truly use USDA Prime beef by the way it looks when it arrives and the way it tastes. The marbled fat provides the nirvana-inducing flavor when you eat it. Â It's almost like butter dissolving on your tongue. Next, add the cowboy seasonings and the wood-fire smoke flavor and I swear I'm eating something that should be a controlled substance. Â My entire body just melts. This must be what a heroin-addict feels when they shoot-up. Â Followed with sip of a robust red wine and I'm in heaven.
Rather than order the traditional side of potatoes, I always go for a veggie with my steak. I don't need some starchy dish distracting me from a good steak and it just makes you sleepy later on. In this case, green beans with walnuts and asparagus. The green beans were delicious and I'll definitely order them again. They were buttery and the walnuts were a great combination.
The wife had the seared Georges Bank sea scallops and was equally delighted. Â She states the seafood is always excellent here.
Service was good. Not great, but good. Â Bathrooms are clean, restaurant was clean.
One last note. I was fortunate enough this evening to hear one of their employees playing guitar and singing live music in the bar area. Â What caught my ear was not just the fact that he was very talented, but the music selection he chose. Â It was an eclectic mix of indie-rock/pop songs from the 90's very tastefully sung with acoustic guitar. I wish I could give you a list of all the songs, but when I heard Stone Temple Pilot's "Plush" being sung acoustically I was bowled-over. Â In all my years, I've NEVER heard this sung live in a nice restaurant and it truly made my evening. It was a nice break from the boring classics like Sinatra or Tony Bennett. A+ for that.
Friends of mine have raved about J Gilberts for a long time, and I used to live no more than 1 mile from this location, but I had never had the pleasure of dining in until New Year's Eve.
Along with a group of friends (including Lori L - see review below), we booked a table for 6 after we were drawn in by their Price Fixed 3 Course New Year's Eve Meal $55 base, $65 with Champagne toast).
I opted to start with a wedge salad. Â The wedge was small compared to some restaurants, but there's only so much you can do with a wedge. Â If it has blue cheese, dressing, and bacon on it I'm game, and this certainly met my criteria.
For my entree, I selected a medium rare 6 oz filet mignon and 1/2 pound lobster tail. Â The steak was seared and warm-red, exactly as I had requested. Â One member of the group had a steak that was probably a half-step less than she requested, but she was able to make a trade with her boyfriend and all was well. Â The steak was an excellent cut, lean with just enough of a fat ring to juice during cooking.
Now onto the reason for my five-star review. Â The lobster tail was hands down the best I've had. Â I know I' live and dine in KC and I'm not used to excellent seafood like I've had on the coasts. Â However, the lobster tail at J Gilbert's was as close to perfection as I've had. Â Perfectly broiled with just a hint of a Cajun-inspired seasoning and a side of drawn butter. Â This thing clocked in at a half pound like a sumo wrestler weighs in as "big". Â it was monstrous.
I was able to cap off dinner with an excellent vanilla bean cream brulee. Â It was a very egg-heavy custard which is my favorite kind, but if you prefer a more "pudding-y" custard it might not be to your tasting.
All in all, an excellent evening. Â The service, food, and extensive wine selection made for an awesome dining experience and I will be back.
This is my favorite restaurant in Kansas City thus far. Â Hands down! Â Which sucks considering it's so pricey because I could go here everyday. Â I have two places on my list of return places (I mean like I will go here repeatedly and shout praises from the rooftop) in this town that is supposedly a foodies paradise. Â What marketing "professional" made that load of crock up?! Â
Moving on. Â Steak, seafood, apps. Â Whatever you get you cannot go wrong. Â Every morsel will just melt in your mouth and you never want your plate to run dry. Â Unfortunately my appetite is a LOT bigger than my stomach and I'm full before I'm half done. =( Â
The service is amazing. Â Super friendly staff every time that I've gone. Â Some friends and I just spent New Years Eve here and even with the holiday bustle our orders were on time and correct.
I highly recommend this place. Â Make sure you have reservations to be on the safe side.
What I love about J Gilbert's is that they know how to cook a steak. Â It always comes out the way I asked for it. Â I've been on numerous occasions and I've never had any problems. Â Food is always tasty, and service is always good. Love love love their bread and peppery butter.
Last night, I had a friend in town from Wichita and a bunch of us reserved the private dining room. Â To start with, we had the sharing platter which came with quesadillas, maytag chips, and crab cakes. Â Loved all three! Â We also got the fried calamari and it was cooked perfectly. Â Not fishy and not chewy. Â
We all loved our entrees. Â Those of us that ordered steaks loved everything about them including the sides (mashed potatoes and grilled asparagus). Â One of my fellow diners got the bone in pork chop and he thoroughly enjoyed it. Â Two of my fellow diners got the salmon and raved about the glaze on it.
I am big into wine and their wine list is decent. Â We ordered a bottle of The Prisoner, which is a red wine. Â It was very good and could tell it was a blend, but had no idea what it was a blend of since the bottle only says red wine. Â When we asked our servers, neither of them knew. Â Maybe I'm just a huge wine snob, but when I dine at a somewhat "fancy" restaurant, I like my servers to be educated on the wine list. Â Other than that, our servers were very efficient.
I was assuming that this would be another typical steak house chain type place. Not too horrible, but nothing really spectacular either. I was pleasantly surprised by both the quality food and the service!
I had the 4 oz filet with mashed potatoes, asparagus and maple glazed shrimp. Â I love steak but am always overwhelmed by portion sizes, so the 4 0z was the right size for me, and it was cooked to perfection! It's nice to go to a place where the term "medium" is actually understood and carried out.
Our server was excellent, not overly attentive, but prompt and professional at all the right times. My friend tipped him very well because of this, and we were pleasantly surprised with dessert on the house!
If you're looking for a good place to take the family out to dinner over the holidays, this is a great, less expensive alternative to The Capital Grille or Ruth's Chris.
I say 4.5 stars
This place is pretty solid. Great atmosphere and beautiful bar. I would say its kind of a southwestern style steakhouse. Some great dishes including the Shrimp Durango... It's got a nice kick to it and I sopped my plate clean w/ the delicious bread. Steaks are always well cooked and on Sundays bottles of wine under $100 are half off.
The Crab Bisque is also stellar. A bit rich, but exquisite nonetheless.
My only complaints, and they are minor, are I wish they'd bring back the Andes mints for after dinner. Silly, I know, but I always looked forward to them. Lol. It's the little things.
Two, I think we could do without the 2 foot menus. They are ridiculously large. So large you can't fit two lengthwise on a table. Haha. It's totally true though.
And finally, although its kinda cool (literally) to have chilled salad forks, I either have to wait for my fork to "warm up" so I can hold it, or, plan on eating my salad with mittens on.
Regardless, I've been to J. Gilbert's on several occasions and I can't remember being disappointed ever.
If you want a great meal south of the Plaza, you should check it out!
OK, so I had a slightly different environment than most reviews. I came to J. GIlbert's as part of a wedding rehearsal dinner, so we had the whole back room and a somewhat set menu - choose from 4 salads/soups, 4 entrees and 2 deserts.Drinks were full open bar.
First, the service. Generally, it was great. We had a huge group yet were taken care of very well. All drink orders came quickly and accurately. My first order was a vodka martini, straight up, clean with olives. They shook it at the table and it was ridiculously smooth. The rest of the table looked envious, chugged their rum + coke concoctions, and moved on to the martini's. All were satisfied with them.
So on the food - I ordered the crab bisque, filet with asparagus/mashed taters, and the raspberry swirl cheesecake. It was all great. Somehow, I think the filet was actually the weakest part of my dinner, but it was still phenomenal. With the size of our group, it was an automatic "medium" on the temp, which is higher than I normally like it, so that might explain why I wasn't 100% sold on the steak. However, I assure you I will be back to order off the regular menu and get a big, juicy medium rare steak.
So how does it stack up to the other chain steakhouses in JoCo? Well, I have been to J. GIlberts, J. Alexanders and Sullivans. Honestly, J. Gilberts is probably the weakest out of the three, but it's still absolutely fantastic.
Went on a Saturday. I had reservations for a party of 4 made a week in advance. We showed up right on time but ended up waiting nearly an hour in an empty lobby while we watched other people come and immediately get seated. When we finally were seated, the booth was much too small for 4 people such that we could barely move our arms. I had to spend my meal leaning forward so that my shoulders were not in my girlfriend's face. You had to plan your moves strategically; I could only fully use one arm, so I often had to completely switch gears and take drinks when there was a window of opportunity.
The people across the aisle from us were in a bigger booth and seemed to be enjoying watching us try and eat.
The food was OK although my entire party had trouble using silverware due to the cramped conditions. I think we all subconsciously rushed through dinner just to get out of there as quickly as possible. It was extremely awkward and it felt like we were being punished for something.
It was a graduation dinner that was ruined by the circumstances. We will never be back.

UPDATE
After sharing this experience with J. Gilbert's online feedback system, the manager called me the next day and listened as I described these details. Â I was apologized to and refunded the entire amount of our check plus gratuity. Â The manager told me he would talk to the server and bartender so this hopefully won't happen again to future patrons.
--------------------------------------------------Â-----
The fillet and lobster tail were excellent, but I have my choice of many places in Kansas City to get great steak and lobster. Â The two-star rating is because of service and drinks.
I should have protested when my wife and I were seated in the bar instead of the dining room. Â It was 5:30 on a Sunday and there were plenty of dining room spaces available. Â They may have just been under-staffed; if so, they know now that customer satisfaction suffers because of it.
I ordered a Negroni and received a quizzical look from the server and man standing behind the bar (could hardly be called a bartender), so just settled for a Campari soda.
They were out of the 6oz fillets, which is a big disappointment for a steakhouse; because of this, we had to take time and figure out a second choice on the menu. Â We made up our minds and had to wait several minutes before the server returned to us. Â By now my Campari soda was dry and Peter was nowhere to be found, so we just sat and stewed in anger.
The server at last shows up and we place our order including my "Canadian Club Manhattan: straight up with a twist instead of the cherry."  The bar --and a member of staff behind it --  were lazily idle for minutes after my drink order was placed.  I commented to my wife that there must be a second bar in the restaurant where they're currently making my drink.  The server comes back and I ask him about my drink.  He says he hasn't "keyed it in yet"  The man behind the bar is just 15 feet away, and the server must walk to a machine elsewhere in the  place so a ticket will be printed at the bar?
I'm upset sans cocktail during this period of 10-15 minutes or so. Â Sweet relief when the server returns with a cocktail glass, an empty cocktail glass! Â The Manhattan ingredients were combined in a shaker that the server had to operate himself then pour. Â Manhattans should always be stirred, not shaken because shaking makes this delicate drink cloudy with an ugly foam on top. Â A trained bartender should have been making my drink with proper technique, not a member of the general waitstaff.
Even though it was shaken, I still dived in after it was poured for me. Â WHAT IS THIS!!!! it tastes like sweet cherry water instead of the spicy burning whiskey that I crave. Â I ask if maraschino syrup was accidentally added because I specifically asked for no cherries, but a twist of lemon. Â The server mentioned something about grenadine and I gave up hope asked for the drink to be taken away.
I stuck with water the rest of the night; a shame with steak and lobster.
Oh, and there were screaming babies in the place as well as several T-shirt + shorts sightings.
I couldn't ask for more. The wood fired steaks are the best I've found in KC so far. It's my opinion that they're better than Ruth's Chris on the Plaza, and I've eaten at both enough times for a fair comparison.
If you have room for an appetizer, definitely go for the crab cakes, they're delicious.
I love the atmosphere here, especially on the slower nights. If it were in the budget, I'd go here every night of the week.
I don't normally review chain restaurants, but J. Gilbert's succeeds precisely because it doesn't "feel" like a chain.
Old-style wood bar with some great drinks. Â Excellent scallops, steaks, decent happy hour menu and a beautiful wood-paneled room where you can host a larger party (for a price, I'm sure). Â Oh, and courteous, knowledgeable servers.
It's definitely more upscale in terms of pricing, but probably the best  type of this restaurant north of College Blvd but south of Shawnee Mission Blvd.
Wow! Â J Gil's earns not only 5 stars from myself (a former vegan) but also gets awarded "best steak in town" from my hubby who has completed the KC steak tour in the form of drug rep dinners.
If you think you might become a regular, I highly recommend joining their e-mail list so you can be the lucky beneficiary of coupons and discounts.
My go-to menu item: Petite Filet Combo with Crab Cake - Amazing!
What's eating J Gilbert's steak? Â Me, that's who. Â If this place was a cult I would have joined it and moved to Kansas. Â Even if I was 500lbs I would have crammed my self in to a volkswagon bug and drove there on a nightly basis. Â
Thankfully it is not a cult but I can see J Gilbert's has quite the local following. Â After having eaten there I can see why. Â Everything there is to like about an atmosphere at a restaurant I liked at J Gilberts. Â Our waiter was professional, thoughtful and courteous with out being overwhelming. Â The ambiance was perfect for a steakhouse and the seating was quite comfortable. Â
The most important part of any dining experience is the food and there were no shortcomings there. Â The food was excellent. Â The steak was prepared well and seasoned nicely. Â My two sides were quite tasty and complimented the meal well, much like I am complimenting the restaurant right now. Â
While I do feel that J Gilberts is an excellent place to dine I can't give it five stars because in an apples to apples comparison between steakhouses there are several others I would put above this one. Â Be that as it may, a steak lover will not be disappointed with this place.
I really had to force myself not to make a Wizard of Oz joke in this review but I think the Yelp* community would understand if I had.
Pay no attention to the Yelper behind the steak...?
If this restaurant was independently owned and operated, I would give it five stars, but it's a well deserved four to four and half star restaurant.
I went there this past Saturday and requested a particular server that I have known for some time. Â We sat at a large table just off to the side of the bar in a room with wine on one wall. Â We were greeted with cocktail orders as well as water.
We did three appetizers, the blue cheese chips, shrimp and crab cakes. Â Each were great, but the crab cakes were not my cup of tea. Â I like crab cakes to be slightly crispy on the outside and these were not. Â Otherwise, they had good flavor.
The salads were great, we did the mixed greens as well as the wedge.
For dinner, I had a KC Strip along with asparagus and a baked potato. Â Great flavor, great temperature, perfect seasoning. Â Everyone else at the table enjoyed their steaks and sides as well.
The wine list is good, nothing great though. Â It's your typical Standard Beverage/Glazer's lineup. Â The usual vino like Caymus, Jordan, Simi, etc. Â We opted for the '08 Prisoner which I would have been impressed to see on the list a couple years ago, but now it's becoming more and more common. Â Either way, it's a good bottle, just more popular now than in the past.
Great food, great atmosphere, great service. Â I'll be back.
Adding another excellent review to J Gilbert's is a bit like hauling coals to Newcastle, but what the heck, I'll chime in anyway. Â Truly a top-notch dining experience. Â We had excellent service on a very busy evening (New Year's Eve;) and were seated immediately even though we were a tad early for our reservation. Â We ordered off of the NYE menu that replaced the regular prix-fixe menu, and enjoyed every bit of it. Â Our server John was perfectly attentive without hovering, and every course was served like clockwork. Â The crab bisque was creamy seafood heaven. Â Our filet was every bit as excellent, perfectly rare and melt-in-the-mouth tender. Â The creme brulee, light & sweet, was a perfect finish. Â
I very rarely give five stars, but J Gilbert's pretty much blew my socks off. Â For upscale dining, this really is about as good as it gets.
Although this restaurant emphasizes wood fired steaks, J. Gilbert's is associated with Bristol's and has excellent seafood, including crab cakes that are as good as those at Bristol's. Â It opens at 4 pm, but the kitchen does not open until 4:30 pm, so if you go there for dinner at 4 pm, you'll have to wait in the bar for a half hour. Â If you drive there from the north on Metcalf, you likely will miss the turn onto 89th, since the restaurant is on the southeast corner. Â So even if you don't see it, make the left turn from Metcalf onto 89th and then the right into the parking lot for the restaurant.
As upscale steak houses go, this one is a winner and priced right. Â The dining room is beautiful and dimly lit with many 4-top and 2-top booths.

Some of Best steaks you could ever taste in these parts...!!
"Oh yeah, we are definitely coming back here!"
We were famished and wiped out after a long afternoon. Seeing J. Gilbert's, we decided to go in and check it out; we'd stay if we liked it. As soon as we walked in, we were at ease. The music was very pleasant, mellow but not bland, loud enough to hear but not so loud as to overwhelm our conversation. The lighting and decor added to our newly relaxed mood, and our tense exhaustion just melted away. Even the air conditioning was just right.
Our waitress was top-notch. We all spotted the three-course prix fixe and decided we had to try it even though we hadn't planned to order that much food. It just looked too good to resist. We also ordered a very nice bottle of red wine and at dinner's end found out it was $10 off that night (Sunday). What a pleasant surprise!
My friends both had salads which looked beautiful. I went for the crab bisque, a favorite of mine when done right -- and this was done right, delicious and rich but not so filling as to destroy the dinner. Delectable is the word.
The main course: They each chose the petite filet plus scallops with a balsamic reduction or salmon, cheddar mashed potatoes, and asparagus. I chose the sirloin and asked for risotto instead of potatoes. Everything was perfect, especially the rare and juicy steaks.
Then dessert. Although the chocolate Pompeii souffle sounded very tempting, none of us could resist the creme brulee. What a feast.
Oh yeah, definitely -- we'll be back.
