Trying to find good fried shrimp on the North Side of Chicago is like trying to find a sushi place on the South Side. There are places that sell shrimp, but no really good places where it is the specialty. I seriously squealed a little when I saw that J and J had a location in Uptown. If you like southern style fried shrimp, you owe it to your palate to at least come here once.
I'd imagine that most yelpers in my area are unfamiliar to this small franchised chain so I'll warn you that you probably won't like the service or the setup. There is no ambiance here and the couple that owns this location aren't the friendliest people. Grin and bear it - the annoyance is worth the reward. The food takes about 10 minutes to prepare, but it is only because the shrimp is freshly battered and fried to order.
I'm a huge fan of the jumbo fried shrimp dinner. Each dinner comes with fries, slaw and 2 pieces of good old wonder bread. Rather than cocktail sauce, the house specialty is mild sauce. If you've never had mild sauce, it's a smooth red dipping sauce as flavorful as tabasco sauce, but (surprise surprise) mild. It works on not only on the shrimp, but is a delicious alternative to ketchup on fries.
There's not much more you can really write about fried shrimp, fries, 2 pieces of bread and sauce. If you like fried shrimp, you will LOVE J J Fish. Period.
