we will never go back.
the vegetarian omellete hardly had any egg and vegetables were soggy and watery. it was something out of a frozen vegetable bag you can get at the grocery store.
the spinach feta omellete was also terrible with very large watery clumps of spinach, also hardly any egg.
the hashbrowns tasted old and dry.
even the toast was terrible.
we would have been better off not eating breakfast at all.
I honestly do not like writing negative reviews. Â But if you don't put them up, the whole concept of yelp doesn't work. Â Gotta review the good AND the bad so people know and can choose accordingly.
I pass this place all the time and had it on my list of places to try because it looks like a great breakfast place. Â I stopped in yesterday with my son to have breakfast and was surprised to find how much I hated it.
When you walk in, it has a great set up with plenty of tables and a large counter that you can sit at. Â But that's all that I found positive about my experience. Â
The service was slow. Â It took our waitress a long time to come by with menus and she frequently passed us by or didn't look over to check on us and our coffee and water glasses sat empty several times.
The food was bad. Â My son got a sirloin steak with eggs. Â The steak was good sized and perfectly cooked but it really lacked any flavor. Â I got the slab bacon with eggs and hashbrowns. Â The bacon would have been excellent but it was way overcooked even though I asked for otherwise. Â When I ordered, the waitress asked, "crispy?" and I said no, please, not at all crispy. Â It came very crispy and was cold and very very hard. Â Kinda like beef jerky ... which I do like but that wasn't what I was looking for. Â My scrambled eggs were really runny. Â I had asked for them "extra dry", which in every other breakfast place I've been to means - well done, not runny, maybe a little brown. Â These came runny and watery. Â The waitress dropped them off and left so quickly that I didn't have time to say anything. Â I did flag her down and ask for them to be recooked, she took them, returned quickly with a plate of eggs and hashbrowns that I'm not even sure was the same plate and the eggs did not appear to be cooked anymore than when she took them. Â
The prices are high. Â Breakfast for the two of us was $28 which seemed only a little high but considering how sucky everything was I felt ripped off.
Eh. Â Came here grudgingly for lunch between a seminar across the street at Holiday Inn.
Too many choices and besides breakfast, there wasn't too much appealing for vegetarians. Â I ended up getting a salad which apparently had half a bottle of French dressing on the plate and some greens. Â I also got a grill cheese, which seems very hard to get wrong. Â Except it did, because the cheese slice (probably Kraft) wasn't throughly melted.
Great lox n bagel platter. The portion is double the size of new york deli across the highway. You also get a pickel with the lox platter! Only open breakfast and lunch. They are always packed, why they do not stay open for dinner is a mistery to me! They have an employee photo wall and it appears they have hardly no turn over! Everyone stays so they must take care of their employees. It must be nice to be doing something well enough to not have to stay open for dinner!
Review Source:We have breakfast at Jack's most weekends - ordering the same thing most every time. The staff is friendly, has memorized T's order and always puts in a order of white toast with butter and strawberry jam for M. When you break it down, Jack's is a typical diner. The food is fast, a tad on the greasy side, and the service is sassy.
The most terrifying thing about the place? The parking lot! Plenty of Lincoln Towncars and elderly drivers to go with them. Although you may be hungry, be patient and don't run the old folks down - most of them have been coming to Jack's longer than you've been alive.
I've been coming here for breakfast all my life and I know that every time I'm in town I'll have to stop by Jack's.
I enjoy most everything here, but there is one thing that I HAVE TO EAT EVERY TIME:
Slab Bacon.
If you don't know about it, order it and see why there is no other place like it.
Besides slab bacon I like their eggs, hash browns, thick french toast and bagel. Â I've had a few lunch items but I order breakfast every time.
For breakfast in Skokie, there's nowhere I'd rather go!
This place is a first rate Jewish diner. I go back often just for the free bowl of soup with every sandwich. It's not a throwaway. The soup is always sensational.
Prices are better than other North Shore delis when you consider the bowl of soup and fries are included with the meal. A real favorite along with The Bagel, Max's Highland Park and Max and Benny's in Northbrook.
I like this place, I really do. I've been to Jack's twice now, and my most recent experience was better than the first one.
The first time I went there, it was super-crowded. It was a Sunday morning, so it was packed with church folks--not that there's anything wrong with church folks, but they were very loud and required a lot of attention from the wait staff. I felt like our table, which just had me and my husband, was neglected. The food had been OK, but I didn't feel like it was worth the poor service. I had ordered pancakes along with the fresh-squeezed orange juice everyone has been talking about. Honestly, I didn't really like the OJ. I'm not a big pulp person, so I found the juice to be too thick and a little gross. It's just not for me.
The second time we went there, I liked what I ordered much more and I thought the service was better. For one thing, it was a Saturday morning and it wasn't very crowded or overrun with churchgoers, which helped with our service experience. I ordered the Tuna Melt with Fries, and I thought it was really good. It came on toasted bread, and the tuna salad part was very tasty.
I will definitely go back to Jack's. Depending on when you go, the service might be a bit sub-par, but the food is good.
Note: Jack's is only open for breakfast and lunch.
I had the slab bacon BLT sandwich. Â It was delightful. Â It was thick, it was tasty. Â Toasted whole wheat, mayo on the side. Â Yum. Â Seriously, why don't more places sell 1/4 inch bacon???? Cute little diner, typical diner food. Â I came in search of this specific sandwich that was highlighted in the Chicago Tribune's 30 sandwiches in 30 days. Â If you're in this neck of the woods and have a hankering for some pork, give it a whirl. Â You'll be glad you did. Â Our waitress was wonderful, cute and witty. Â Nice experience.
Review Source:I have multiple check-ins here and will continue to have them as long as my daughters love our favorite waitress Gabby and Uncle Jack! Â My mom and dad started taking my older daughter here first. Â She loved the place, then eventually my younger daughter loves it too. Â Anyone says going to breakfast and they know its Jack's! Â I have had breakfast and lunch mostly and always great!
Review Source:When I came home from college I used to stop at the Gold Coin for Corned Beef and Jack's for a Cheese Burger and Chocolate Malt. Over the years it became harder and harder to get a good malt; now it's hard to get a good burger.
A couple of weeks ago I was in around 2:15; one of the two waitrresses culd barely move and was not servicing her area; she got little help from the other server or the manager who could see she was incapable of performing. It's nice that they keep a server on who is past her prime, but the customer should still get coffee and water once in a while.
I'm usually a generous tipper, but given the service I left a $2.00 tip on a $10.00 bill with my credit card, which still isn't bad.  I can't blame this on the server, but I got my credit card statement today and low and behold, Jack's charged  $1.00 more than I signed for. This has happened to me 3 times in the past year(more than any other year) and it's never a good sign.  If you pay by credit card, save your receipt and compare it to the statement when you get it. You may be unpleasantly surprised.
Oh Jack's, what can I say about you? I have spent nearly every Sunday morning with you for the last 5 years so I have cut you a lot of slack. My patience is running out though.
Your scrambled eggs are never cooked through which is gross and the food in general is not as good. And, your service is slipping. The waitresses are very good but why does it take so long to get the food nowadays? What is going on in the kitchen??
Things seem to be slipping at this place and I hope they turn it around. There is still time! You're not out of business yet but I feel like you could be any day now...
I went to Jack's all the time with my family when I was a kid, often after my swimming lessons at the Leaning Tower YMCA. Some things have remained the same (like paying at the register in the front, and the boxes of cereal on the wall behind the counter) and other things have changed (the waitresses no longer remind me of Flo on "Alice", and it's not a 24 hour place anymore - Â in fact, they close at 3pm!). But it's still a decent place to grab some breakfast or a sandwich. Expect crowds, but the people who work here really hustle. I saw a waitress carry about 9 plates on her arms...she should go on America's Got Talent. Â Yowza!
Review Source:This is my family's favorite breakfast place - we've been going there for years. Â Their real fresh orange juice is the key to breakfast joy. Â
Chocolate chip pancakes are favorites with the kids - they have lots of chocolate chips and there is plenty of them. Â My favorites are the Las Vegas Breakfast (eggs, bacon or sausage, short stack of pancakes) or the crazy omelet. Â It's hard to really distinguish yourself with breakfast fare, but I've always been satisfied.
Service is typically quick and friendly. Â Prices are reasonable. Â Go there for breakfast!
Its been about 20yrs since I ate here last and it was nice to relive some old memories; especially since I was here with an old friend.  We used to hang out here back in the late 80's after dropping off our respective gf's and stopping in for late night pancakes, etc and coffee.  I still remember the old guy asking you when you come in: "You gonna smoke?" and make a cigarette hand gesture.  Well, no more smoking section, no more 24/7 service, but luckily  still the same basic solid diner grub.
Walking into the dining room at the Senior Center, oops sorry, the restaurant; I grabbed a booth by the window facing Touhy. Â My friend was running late and the waitress brought over a bread basket and a soft drink. Â Service was attentitive, but not overbearing.
I had the Turkey Club, which was very good and with fries and slaw, a good deal for about $8.
You have to pay up front, so dont wait around the table for the waitress to grab your check.
I would recommend if you are in the area.
It was busy today; 4th of July it was no suprise. Â This establishment was friendly and been around quite a few years. Â I also knew it used to be a 24 hour place but now opens from 6 - 3. Â
I took my mom uncle and cousin there and we stayed almost 2 hours. Â Food was good, waitress was prompt (although she seemed alittle preoccupied that didn't make the service any less great) and we were all stuffed.
Started to die down at about 1 which is when we left.
I will never go back! I've been to Jack's four times and today's was the last. Jack's is ok. The service is usually good, the price is right and the food decent.
So why did they get 1 star? Today I had breakfast at Jack's and I made the mistake of saying no one can mess up breakfast. I ordered the thick cut bacon and eggs with hash browns, English muffin, orange juice and a plain biscuit.
The bacon was over cooked and tough, the eggs were just ok, the hash browns were cold in middle, the English muffin was cold and the biscuit was dry and microwaved. My wife had a grilled cheese with tomato. When she picked it up it was so greasy that all the cheese slid out and the tomato was nasty tasting. The service was sub par as well today so all and all a horrible experience. Everyone is allowed to have a bad day but it was so bad it was unforgivable.
Goodbye Jack's, may you never upset my stomach again!
No joke, I've probably eaten at Jack's more times than any other restaurant in my life! Â In high school, we hoodlums would always go in at 1 am for some flapjacks and coffee because it was the cool thing to do. Â I now work right near Jack's so I'll stop in with my pops for lunch every now and again.
The food is exactly what one would expect from a diner/family restaurant. Â The service is good, although if it's busy during the lunch hour you may go some time without seeing your waitress. Â The coffee is great and there is always someone walking around filling up the cups. Â It's not super clean, but it's never been an issue to me.
A few things you should try:
-Scrambled Mess
-Crazy Omelet
-BLT Club
-Cheddar Cheese soup (only on Fridays)
-Persian Chopped Steak
Honestly... the only reason I come to Jack's is for their soups. Â I grew up just a few blocks away from here and when I was younger, I thought their breakfasts were the best. Â Then I went to Sander's across the street and now I won't go back to Jack's unless it's to grab some soup for lunch. Â
Cream of mushroom, cream of chicken, rueben, cheddar cheese... they are all awesome soups. Â However, their lunch sandwiches... burgers, patty melts, corned beef, etc... they are all pretty mediocre. Â
The service can range from excessively friendly to downright surly. Â You'll either be slightly rushed to order or won't see a server for 15 minutes. Â Totally hit or miss. Â
Try the soups. Â Grab a salad. Â Skip it for breakfast.
I was here twice, both times the service was slow, and they messed up 2 orders the first time we went, and one order the second. My sister was ill when we stopped in and just wanted to get a plate of pasta noodles and they insisted that they couldn't do that, eventually after arguing with our waitress they finally did. I think that was the most memorably irritating memory out of both visits.
The food itself isn't that great. I'm very picky about breakfast sausages and I wasn't impressed with these very much. I would have rather hit Ihop for the same meal and had a better experience. Also, my scrambled eggs were cold. Not sure what that was about but I just ate them anyways.
If you're looking for a really cheap little spot to sit down for a few minutes though, it's not a terrible spot, though I would probably recommend even Perkin's which is not so far away.
For those of you who appreciate the wonders of the diner, Jacks is a must visit.
Back in the day, Jacks was the place to go for that drunken 4 a.m. steak and eggs breakfast. Now that I'm an old fart and have to worry about Heart Disease, Blood Pressure and Cholesterol levels, Jack's is a guilty pleasure that I can still experience once in a while.
On my most recent visit. Part III on my tour of self destruction, I ordered a beautiful Ham and Cheese Omelet with crispy hash browns. I added the perfect amount of Tabasco sauce for what I like to call, Breakfast bliss. The service was great, the coffee was hot and the food was deadly and tasty (just the way I like it).
Jack's the perfect combination of great food, friendly service and wonderful memories that leave my heart and tummy happy every time that I visit.
oh jack's, how many fond memories i have of you.
the late night eating, smoking our brains out, and the sassy waitresses. somehow they knew we were poor and it seemed purposely didn't give us bread every time we went in. one time, we went with a group of like, 8 people and one of the guys asked for bread. i believe he had ordered a cheeseburger, and the waitress turned to him and said 'you've got bread on your burger' and turned around and left! how hilarious at 2am!
they have phosphates, which was a big mystery for bit. cherry are the best. chocolate kind of freaks me out. *shudder*
all in all, jack's isn't the same as it used to be. it would be the late night hang out for all suburban kids, but it doesn't stay open past midnight now. there is also a ban on smoking, so it doesn't have the same smokey ambiance.
goodbye adolescence!
This is one of those diners that people from Skokie (and North Siders) went to when they were in high school & college after late night drinking and partying. Â Then they all grew up, went back here and realized it's not as good as they remembered it to be. Â The food isn't the best diner food I've had, but my motto for a place like this is: "If all else fails, order the grilled cheese". Â After trying another breakfast place in the area, I'm not sure if I'll go back to Jack's. Â But I'm sure many people nostalgic of the past will continue to go here.
Review Source:If one day they pass a ban on polyster and old people, Jacks will permanently close.
It's right off the highway so it's like the truck stop of the suburbs for me. The food is unappetizing, the salad consists of iceberg lettuce, a few tomatoes for color, unwrap the saran wrap and ta da! Salad a la Jack.
Please...after too many bad run ins with the restroom, I'm gonna have to give Jack's a solid 2 stars. They don't mean to be bad-they just don't know any better. The staff has been there for a long time so they don't have any reason to smile or engage in a conversation.
It's a diner. End of story.
This place is a solid thumbs up in my book. We were here on a Saturday afternoon at around 3:30 pm. I know we came here at an odd time to eat but the place was only about 1/3 full or about 2/3 empty depending if you are a glass half full or half empty kind of person. I enjoyed the peace and quiet and were able to enjoy our meal in peace.
The service here was OK, our waitress did her job but did not really seem all that friendly. The food here was pretty damn good as I ordered the beef and noodles. It was smothered in gravy and loaded with beef and mushrooms. It was not tough dry beef either. My plate nearly overfloweth with beefy goodness doused in gravy! The portion was huge and I got my money worth and then some!
I have probably been here 50+ times but that is just cause they used to be open 24 hours. Now that they aren't I don't find myself going quite as often. The prices are decent and the menu is pretty large. They also carry different flavors of bagels (cinnamon raisin, chocolate chip, etc). As far as sandwhiches they get a plus for having egg salad and also for having a bacon sandwhich (my hubby's favorite). All and all a decent experience.
Review Source:I love at diners when they ask if you want your toast buttered. Â "Yes" Â I came here for two reasons: I'm fat AND lazy. Â Both go hand in hand with someone else buttering my toast.
It was a perfectly acceptable diner experience. Â The food came quick and was exactly what I expected. Â And the "coffee guy" was all over it. Â I think I had about 4 refills.
Also check out the back of the menu.  They have some great lines about why their food is so great.  Something along the lines of "we buy only the freshest produce and ingredients, blah blah blah."  But the topper is after every claim they throw in some ridiculous one-upper similar to "unlike most other diners and drive-ins."  Apparently Jack's has some insecurity issues.  It's the Penelope (<a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2Ftallfreak.com%2F2007%2F04%2F06%2Fpenelope%2F&s=1a017b33644cd8ae217ab74532fd158629ac1f3bff79465c09556d08b5d28a95" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://tallfreak.com/200…</a>) of greasy spoons.
I have only been to this restaurant once several years ago. Â My experience was so bad that I still remember it. Â
My friends and I went to this restaurant at night. The place was nearly empty. Â We sat at our table for about 20 minutes and no one came to even give us menus. Â We saw several waitresses walking around and helping other people, but no one even brought us menus.
Finally, we called the restaurant to find out what was going on. Â From our booth, we could hear the phone ringing and we could hear the staff complaining that the phone was ringing. Â Someone finally answered. Â We described where we were sitting in the restaurant and asked for menus. Â The person on the phone responded, "Come up and get them yourselves."
Ugh. Â I hate this place. Â This one visit was enough to keep me from ever going back.
Ahh, Jack's - what a classic. I came here on a pretty regular basis for years (especially with my grandmother, who used to sneak French onion rolls from the breadbasket into her purse before we went home...oh, Nana!) This place is a greasy spoon but they have some seriously delicious tuna fish. Go with the "scoop of tuna" and a bowl of matzah ball soup - you won't be sorry.
Review Source:Jack's has become my favorite diner. When I'm not looking for anything fancy but just want a decent meal that will stick to my ribs, this is where I like to go. Â I also like a late leisurely breakfast here, not brunch but a big breakfast. The coffee is better than average and they fresh squeeze the orange juice.
Later in the day they always have some good specials and their chicken soup is consistently good as well as a matsoh ball soup. I'm usually good with soup and one of their big salads if I can't decide on one of their specials.
Leisurely is the best way to describe their service. I seem to end up there in the middle of a shift change. It's definitely not the place to see and be seen unless you are a Buick owner.
We used to go here back in highschool. Â The food is NOT good, but we made believe it was. We used to make fun of all the drunk people who would come in to sober up and occasionally cause some restaurant drama. Â You get a huge basket of bread and endless coffee. Â Don't eat the spaghetti.
Review Source:I was all about this place in high-school.
It was always open, you could smoke cigarettes and sit around forever and it was pretty cheap.
Weekends were funny because you'd get all the clubbers coming back from the city - looking like shit. And just lots of drunk people in general.
Great people watching those late nights.
Since those happy times they have axed the smoking section and, well, the literal haze having been lifted leaves the place a little dull.
But it will always live on in my memories.
