Have been going to the JR Cigars in Paramus for years and always thought it was excellent but needed a lounge area to sit and enjoy a good stick. This is the JR I hoped for.
It has the large variety of cigars at good prices that the other store does, plus the great amount of 'stuff', meaning everything from fancy lighters to perfume. But the best part is the lounge, restaurant, wine and bar areas. The waitresses and bartender were very helpful and you cannot beat a free cigar with a meal.
Cannot wait to go back.
JR Cigar claims they are the biggest cigar store in the universe or something like that, and I can agree with that since they are pretty enormous. The variety is pretty good too, but for an occasional smoker like myself, who's not too knowledgeable about cigars I would probably recommend someplace more intimate and helpful, like Fumé in Montclair, since the people that work behind the counter are not particularly helpful.
Review Source:Let me start off first by saying that I do not smoke. Â I walked into JR Cigars to purchase a cigarette case for my coworker who was my assigned Secret Santa person.
I drove past this location even though there is a big sign out front that screams "JR Cigars." Â The building looks corporate-y and unlike other stores. Â That's because their corporate office is at the same location, the store is located around the side. Â Â
Gwen was particularly helpful to me in providing directions to the store and holding an item for me. Â She was a lone woman working the registers by herself and she was still very upbeat and smiley to everyone she helped. Â I basically went in and then back out with my Secret Santa gift in tow. Â
JR Cigars specializes in products made for the cigar-junkie, but they actually have a lot of other cool stuff for non-smokers too. Â A lot of options, but small enough that you won't spend an entire day there.
I haven't been to JR in years...so I decided to pay a visit. I was immediately hit with the powerful aroma of a medley of cigars. The gift shop has lots of curious items and ushers you into the potent world of this gigantic "humidor" that houses what could very well be thousands of cigars. The sales associates were helpful and knowledgeable about the product which is essential, because the variety can get overwhelming.
I particularly love the lounge area. Here you can order some food and relax with a cigar. We ordered the cheese and fruit platter, the perfect lingering snack to complement your cigar. I love the relaxed atmosphere but the testosterone was ever-present as I was the only woman in the entire place! I also love that you can purchase a bottle of wine (once again, they have a very nice selection) at a great price and have the waitress open it for you and just chill.
JR is what you make it. Whether you're just passing through for a pick up or sticking around to enjoy your purchase, all your cigar and drinking needs can be met here. Enjoy!
By no means am I a cigar expert, or even an enthusiast. Â I'll generally smoke less than 10 cigars in a given year, saving them for some special occasion, or a trip with some friends. Â However, my friend spoke volumes of J&R, and I've been several times now.
They have the largest walk-in humidor I've seen, and a tremendous selection of cigars. Â If you don't know what you are looking for, there are plenty of employees around that can help you. Â However, here's why I docked a star.
There tends to be an aura of cigar snobbish-ness from some of the guys that work there. Â Being the mindless cigar noob that I am, I asked for some help. Â I only really have smoked a select few, and asked for someone comparable to price and body to a Perfecto X. Â Needless to say, the man who helped me pointed me to some of the most expensive cigars they had. Â Useless. Â He did not seem very interested in helping me, so I ended up gambling on a couple choices on my own.
Overall however, this is a great place to go for cigar and tobacco related products. Â The attached restaurant is great as well, and is a nice way to relax before heading out.
Yay!
I've only been here a few times to buy celebration cigars for boys' birthdays and trips to casinos but each time has been easy and awesome. Half of the entire place is a giant humidor and it's pretty big so there is a huge selection of cigars. The staff is v. helpful and always willing to walk me through and suggest good cigars that fit my budget. The other half of the building is a restaurant, which I haven't tried, but I hear you can smoke your recently purchased cigars in there, so I'm sure that's great for the aficionados and not so great for pregnant women and children.
*3.5 Stars*
I no longer smoke. My body and health thank me for it. I do occasionally indulge in a cigar. And when I do, I like to hit this place up. It's a relaxed environment, smokey yes, but it is relaxed. On a weekend night you are hard pressed to find a table or stool at the bar. It's about 95% male but with a sprinkle of people on a date. A lot of testosterone going around...
They have an unbelievable selection of cigars. A good selection of wine. They don't have a very good beer selection on draft but they make up for it in bottle.
Their food is surprisingly decent. The pizza is good and their tuna sandwich is not too bad. They don't have "fried" food from what I can tell (i.e. french fries, onion rings...you know, crap that's no good for you).
The service is not very good. The couple of times I have gone and seated in the lounge area, it has taken a significant amount of time to place drink or food orders AND to even receive it. I understand it's busy but slow service is not excusable. But lets be honest, you are sitting down and having a cigar so time is not of importance.
FOOD: Average but surprisingly ok for a place like this.
ATMOSPHERE: SMOKEY! Be prepared to go home reeking like smoke...also chill and very male dominated. Not type of place you can meet a lady.
SERVICE: Poor. Not by their wrong doing.
SELECTION: Extensive cigar collection. Spirit, beer (including bottle) and wine selection pretty good as well.
This place is awesome. I never knew such a place could exist. If you love cigars you must check this place out. The entire store is a humidor and they carry a large selection of cigars. They also sell their own "JR" brand cigars that are very cheap to buy in large packs. I have only tried one or two of the JR replicas because I tend to stick with a few favorites.
The employees are very helpful and I highly recommend talking to them if you are new to cigars or need some suggestions. These guys are regular smokers so they know what they are talking about.
I would have given this place 5 stars but I knocked one off because for such a large store they don't have some brands I like.
I came here with some colleagues last month for my first cigar ever, besides JR's ridiculously extensive selection, the staff here helped me pick out the perfectly mild Macanudo for virgin cigar smokers like myself. The location has a huge cigar room with options galore, and the other side has a bar/restaurant where you can enjoy a meal & brewski along with your fresh cigar. I haven't had the food but next time I come here I'll try some of their fare and hopefully it's SMOKING good.
Review Source:I love the occasional cigar. Â Its great to grab a few friends and go down to JR for a few beers and a stogie. Â In NJ this place has no rival when it comes to one stop shopping (smoke, eat, drink).
My one complaint would be the food quality. Â Its gotten better over the years but its still stuff that they basically can cook up in either a microwave or its pre-made. Â The sandwiches are all pretty decent, although the cheese and fruit platter is the standout value. Â Plus ever meal comes with a montecristo (not their best smoke, but hey, its free).
Cigar selection is out of this world and prices are good. Â If you are going to watch a popular game show up early....the place gets crowded and seats can be scarce.
If you don't have a man cave in your house meet JR cigar!
This place is garbage. Â The people act like you aren't good enough to buy cigars, you can't breathe due to the worst ventilation system I've ever encountered, the cigars are double the cost than Cigars International and http://Cigars.com, and the beer is flat as a penny squeeze by a rail car. Â Never again will I go there. Â I don't know what the hype is about. Â This place just plain sucks. Â Not to mention that you are greeted by a cop when walking out of the bar. Â That makes me want to go back! Â Trash!
Review Source:i've grew up near the j&rs in paramus, but never had a chance to go inside. Â fast forward to my late 20s and now i'm working near the J&R in whippany and had lunch here w/ coworkers recently.
started with a pint of guinness for $5. Â next for $9.95, i got a chicken cordon-blue sandwich which was a 7.5/10, chips, and possibly a pickle (can't remember). Â but here's the kicker - a free cigar is included with every lunch. Â which brings my overall experience there for lunch to an 8.5/10.
after eating and smoking, we leisurely went into the giftshop and the cigarshop, which was pretty overwhelming by the sheer size and amount of cigars.
J&R Cigar is the one place ive been buying cigars for years. There massive walk in humidor has even impress all my non smoking friends when we've stopped here. I normally purchase cigars by the case, but occasianally ill pick up one of two of their specials.
They also have all sorts of things for pipes and their gift shop has an obundance of oddities. Ive browesed there wine selection and it pretty decent and the prices are average with a few things that drop below average. I know because i use to manage a liquor store and i was incharge of ordering and setting prices.
They also have a restaurant to eat in which ive never been to but have wanted to try.
Other cigar shops just dont stack up.
As Co organizer of Northern NJ Cigar Meet Up group. I have the utmost praise for J&R Whippany.
The staff is extremely friendly & helpful.
The Walk In Humidor is huge. It's bigger them most cigar shops. From great discounts, to their Alternative house brand. To some obscure cigars. The selection & discounted prices are excellent.
Not sure of what a certain cigar is, Ask the friendly & knowledgeable salesmen & women.
The Men's shop has great general merchandise a fun shopping place, including toys, humidors, watches, lighters, smoking accessories, & much, much, more.
The Wine Shop is a virtual paradise with huge discounts. And a nice selection of Port, Bourbon, & Scotch.
The Fragrance shop, has a nice selection for women, & men.
.The Montecristo lounge, offers relaxed dining, a working Fire Place. The Menu has some new updates. Menu staples come with a free turbo Montecristo Cigar. Women are most welcome.
So are groups for meetings, & gatherings.
J&R Whippany is about an hours drive from NYC.
Happy Holidays to all.

This place has the biggest walk-in humidor room I've ever seen in my life, it's probably about the same size as a basketball court. Â Good selection (not great, can't always get my Ashton Double Magnums) but they have a lot of options. Â The J&R cigar copies are often very good and cheaper than the branded ones, definitely worth a shot. Â
Their restaurant looks very good and like a real man's hangout, but the crowd appears to be more the married older man, never seen anyone in their 20s or lower 30s there. Â Yet were I to want to get away and smoke a few cigars it would be a good option.
But for me at this point in my life it's a great shop for cigars and also a pretty good wine store.
I love JR Cigar. Â They have a tremendous selection and there is never any difficulty getting help, and the help is always helpful. Â I love the feel of the place too. Â Its huge, but you dont feel like you're in a warehouse. Â They also have a great bar and restaurant where you can smoke and the food is very good, well priced, and comes with a $10 macanudo tubos cigar. Â You really cant beat that! Â The drinks are great and not too expensive, and the crowd is great too. Â LOVE!
Review Source:Even though i have never met Lew Rothman , i have a great affection for the things he has done to the cigar industry. Â This giant mecca although small in comparison to his shop in north carolina on 95 is a place that you can get good cigars at a reasonable price. Â This is most likely the largest humidified space in new england. There is also a nice looking bar and a large gift shop which has great prices on perfume, cologne. Â The only reason i don't 5 star it is based on the selection of cigars, which does not encompass many of the top brands because they were taken over by a large wholesaler called altadis. Â This place would be amazing if it was a one stop shop for everything i like.
Review Source:J&R Cigar looks like a warehouse from the outside. Â For all intents and purposes, it is. Â It is one part gift shop: the best way to describe this is a father's day present paradise. Â It is another part, a large climate and humidity controlled chamber filled with any and every type of legally obtainable cigar one can think of. Â Lastly, Â it is an eating establishment. Â The later is what we will focus on for the purpose of this review.
It is Manly. Â There are no ways around this truth to describe J&R. Â The mahogany wood accents the dark carpets and large tv in the corner which mostly plays sports. Â There is a menu in which every item is $9.95 which range from a fruit and cheese platter to nachos to a pizza etc. Â
From experience, I can say that all of the above mentioned items are "good," but truthfully one does not go here to enjoy the dining. Â The truth is that if Northern New Jersey women want to know where their husbands are at night, they are trying to hold on to the last bit of masculinity they have left drinking spirits and smoking any of a smorgasbourg of cigars from which there are to choose.
Where else can one escape the holistic, tame, responsible yuppie lifestyle and clog his arteries and innhale first and second-hand smoke while watching sports and killing time. Â You won't find a good salad here, but you can feel like you're in college again... kinda
