I absolutely love this coffee shop. Not only do they have great coffee, but the sandwich and other food selection is pretty good. Â The food is delicious and prices are reasonable. Â The employees are quite friendly and courteous which makes the experience that much better!
Kudos and keep up the good work guys! I sometimes start my day here and then get a great meal for lunch!
My chief complaint is in regards to the food. Â Very small sandwiches with very very little on them for $7.50. Â And the thimble full of the side they give you is irritating. Â It smacks of a place that is desperately close to going out of business and cutting corners any way they can. Â I work right around the corner and I've tried it a couple of times, and then I kick myself for not going to Bari to get twice the sandwich for $2 less. Â Instead of making a sandwich that is tasty, worth the price, and keeps me coming back, I have gotten a sandwich that is tasty, makes me kick myself for paying the price for it, and makes me not want to come back ever again. Â I tried the breakfast burrito a couple weeks ago and you get egg, cheese, and a couple dashes of potato, all sloppily rolled up. Â Again, I felt like I was paying for convenience and not the food. Â
On the plus side, there is free wi-fi, the staff is nice, and the coffee is good. Â It'll be interesting to see if this place stays open for long.
A funky oasis in a funky part of town. Â Â I stumbled upon this place while searching for a building in the neighborhood, and I come here whenever I can to kill time before my appointments in the area. Â Free wi fi, friendly staff, great coffee drinks and food, comfortable place. Â Â And, most importantly, a rather large turtle to stare at. Â Â I'm a fan!
Review Source:I was here Friday November 30th and it was really good! I had the "Vietnamese Coffee" which is condensed milk, Chicory, and espresso. It was a bit too sweet for my taste (next time I'd ask for light on the condensed milk), but interesting. It's sort of similar to "Kopi" for people who've had Singaporean coffee before.
The person I was with got a latte and it was really good! Not too much milk and the coffee wasn't burnt (probably the biggest mistake at any coffee shop).
Also, the barista was really cute! Barista with dark hair, I was the guy with the old army jacket and you told me that you didn't like the coffee I was getting. If you ever read this, I'd like to talk coffee with you sometime; send me a message!
I wanted to visit a cafe away from the hectic boring ones found in River North. I read the Yelp reviews and decided to try it out.
This place definitely has the bohemian feel to it as soon as you walk in. I went during the summertime when the whole front facade was open. I wonder if it is open during the winters too otherwise it would not be the ideal place to hang out.
The coffee was good and the sandwiches (multiple ones sampled) were above average. They definitely are worth trying but not quite so good that I'd make a special trip just for the food.
There is free wifi and it still has not been overrun by the pseudo-coffee afficianados.
As for a place to study, it's one of my favorites.
This is an interesting cafe located in a trendy warehouse-y part of town. The ambiance is great -- open space, doors open out to the street, etc. We came on a Sunday afternoon, so it seemed a little slower and sleepier. It's close to the el and that was nice.
The service was really odd though--I can't say that I had a warm or friendly experience with the barista. I ordered an ice tea, which they brewed on the spot and cooled down, and it essentially was about 2 pints total! Pretty great deal for tea.
The yogurt that I had was way too sugary and vanilla-y. It's the kind you pick up from the counter though.
The back was a little dark so we moved to smaller tables near the front to do some work and chat with friends.
I am completely confused by this place.
Service was slow and a little rude.
My fake latte tasted like it came out of a vending machine at a gas station, and my bagel was stale. Â I threw both away after one sip/bite.
Tables were sticky... Chairs were sticky... Â
Everything was just really gross, all around.
Should have stuck to La Colombe.
This coffee shop reminded me of the good old days at Coffee Culture back in Florida, it's quite cozy and the service was pretty amazing! The place has this indie air about it which keeps it very much alive and I could tell this was a place for die hard loyal customers.
You can ask for whichever flavor you want and they do have a turtle and their artsy wall :)
Definitely a good place for a breezy or rainy afternoon!
The down side is that it is located in the middle of nowhere, and it's not the kind of place you might wanna be walking through in the middle of the night unless you want to end up dead in the railroads nearby...
Girls go to Mars to get candy bars
Boys go to Jupiter to get more stupider
Ah wait - No. Girls like me go to Jupiter to get yummy egg sammiches! Which by the way are better than candy bars, especially when accompanied by awesome art and a turtle straight out of  the NeverEnding Story.
I wondered into this cafe because I was in need of some free wifi.  I liked the atmosphere of the coffee shop.  Ordered an iced tea and an oatmeal cookie and got change back from my 5 bucks!!  The iced tea was quite good.  It's hard to find  coffee shops that make drinkable iced tea.  The cookie was tasty. Â
The service was friendly. Â The cafe was not very crowded for a Saturday afternoon. The music was loud, I realize this is not a library, but it did look like most of the people were studying and listening to their own music.
They do have a $5 minimum if you using a credit card. Â There is an ATM in the front and a cup of coffee is under $2.
I love this area of the West Loop; gritty urban industrial cool old loft buildings with the odd boutiques mixed in. Â I stumbled upon this place while walking my dog in the area. Â I love the vibe and cool ambiance of Jupiter Outpost and wish there were more "un-Starbucks" cafes like this. Â I've only been here once and got an iced latte and banana bread. Â The coffee was good, but the dessert was not that great. Â If you serve espresso drinks then your desserts should be amazing. Â I will definitely give this place another chance in the near future. Â 3 stars for now until my next visit.
Review Source:After today's sandwich I would give probably one star..
I've bee going to this place for about 3 years, because i'm working across the street and it is the closest place to grab something to eat. Coffee is ok, I do like artistic surrounding and bizy breakfast time and a friendly turtle.
But SANDWICHES ARE AWFUL! Probably because of the new people working there (they used to be delicious before!) It takes too long and paying 7$ for panini you don't expect getting mostly a huge bread, and a small piece of pickle and meat. NO MORE!
For strictly a coffee shop, I'd give this a 4 or 5 star. Â It's an artsy, independent, has a good vibe, and in a cool space. Â Seems like a good place to hang out and study without much distractions. Â
But the food (sandwiches) were pretty bland. Â I've never experienced such a boring, bland bahn mi sandwich. Â I had the chicken one. Â Maybe the pork has more flavor...I asked the guy at the counter which was better (chicken and pork) and he couldn't answer. Â So I went with chicken, ate half, and threw the other half away. Â My friend had a tuna melt which was also bland and flavorless. Â
If I lived across the street, I'd go again. Â But since it's not that close, I don't think I'll give it a second shot.
Jupiter Outpost, why did I have to park 5 blocks away and walk over train tracks to get to you?! If you weren't such a pain in the butt to get to, I think I would spend an inappropriate amount of time sitting on your benches sipping on coffee. Since I had to trek to this place, I felt obligated to stay ummm all day. And really, none of the following things kept me here...
-Tasty coffee with free refills
-Tasty barista (yeah he was real cute... I'm engaged but it's ok to look and it's the only free thing on the menu)
-An interesting breakfast and lunch menu with cheap, really good breakfast sandwiches, paninis and banh mi sandwiches (Vietnamese subs with jalapenos and pickled veggies)
-More eye candy in suits walking in and out all day long
-Comfy seating, great place for doing lots of work
-Free wifi
-Outdoor seating
So while I had a wonderful several hours here, filling my belly with tasty treats and watching the overall handsome clientele, I will have to plan my day to get here again over the train tracks.
Jupiter seems kinda "meh" to me. I've come here a handful of times over the past couple of months. I like the fact that there's a turtle in the back, and would always make a point to get one of the tables near the turtle. There are large tables as well, which is nice for getting work done.
The staff is...okay, I guess. They're neither rude nor friendly to me, but it seems like it gets pretty busy and I've observed some rather rude patrons, so I imagine that has something to do with it.
It feels like there's no air conditioning, which is a drawback in the summer. Also, sometimes they can play very loud club music. I was in there one afternoon, hoping to read some secondary literature for a paper I needed to write (I'm a grad student) but the music was so loud and distracting that I drank my cappuccino as quickly as I could and left. There are speakers attached to the ceilings at various points so it's hard to find a quiet spot when the music is blaring.
The crowd itself seems a bit corporate, which I guess makes sense, since there are a lot of small companies in the various lofts immediately nearby. It seems to be mostly people doing work on their laptop or occasionally meeting a friend. It seems like they do a lot of take-out business as well.
I tried one of their pastries (a piece of poppyseed bread) which was quite (almost too) sweet. The coffee is okay, but not necessarily memorable.
They do get points for the turtle, though.
I FEEL ASHAMED.
SHAMEFUL.
SADDENED,
I CHEATED ON MY BELOVED WORMHOLE.
FOR WHAT? A CHEAP THRILL....
To the untrained eye, JOC is a pretty good coffee shop.... It's got everything a coffee shop needs to qualify as "decent"
But to someone who's been back to the future at the Wormhole...... there's no comparison.
I ask you Jupiter Outpost....
Where's the love?
Where's the care?
Where's the artistry?
Where's the DeLorean?
VIVA LA WORMHOLE!
DOWN WITH JOC.
A good coffee shop is an elusive thing. Face it, we now live in a world of Starbucks and we've been taken over by the extra hot, half-fat grande latte with a shot of vanilla syrup and an extra shot of espresso people. They all seem to listen to smooth jazz and they're okay with mass-produced bakery case goods.
Jupiter Outpost is not Starbucks. I say that in the best, most exciting way. It's cozy but you're not sitting on top of the person next to you. You actually have to order food (don't worry, they have baked goods, too) and you can hear what the person across the table is saying to you.
And unlike Intelligentsia, you don't have to be a vulture to get a few seats next to each other.
Fulton Market is one of my favorite areas to meet friends, it's a pretty good in-between when you're coming from all ends of the city, and parking's rarely the nightmare that Lakeview/Lincoln Park come with.
I do wish they'd fix the lightbulb that was buzzing on and off every three minutes the other day, though. That can give a girl a headache FAST.
Dear Pretty Pretty Men That Wandered Into Jupiter Outpost While I Was There,
OH MY GOD WHY DON'T YOU COME INTO THE COFFEESHOPS BY MY HOUSE? Hell, why don't you just COME OVER TO MY HOUSE. Why don't you just LAY ON TOP OF ME. THERE ARE SO MANY OF YOU AND I LOVE YOU AND YOU SHOULD ALL CALL ME.
But seriously, call me,
Stacey
********
Dear Jupiter Outpost Panini With The Giardiniera ,
You were pretty damned delicious. And gigantic. And you came with this adorable little blue cheese pasta salad.
I might love you,
Stacey
********
Dear Turtle That Lives At Jupiter Outpost,
DO YOU EVER SLEEP? DO YOU EVER STOP MOVING? Holy jesus, you're the most consistently entertaining reptile I've ever seen, aside from those crocs on Crocodile Hunter.
Turtle power!

Dear Jupiter Outpost Coffee,
Hi. I like you quite a bit. Though if I were to order something a little more complicated than a standard drip, you'd be a lot more expensive. Lucky for me and my wallet, I LIKE standard drip. Also, "standard drip" is kind of a weird thing to say.
Standard drippingly,
Stacey

Dear Jupiter Outpost As A Whole,
You're all right in my book. You have a cool space, nice staff, weird art, a bangin turtle with more pep than most people, tasty sammiches, and inexpensive boring coffee (as opposed to "fancy coffee" - which costs more). You also have exposed brick and give me an excuse to dick around in the West Loop/Fulton Market area.
I'll be back,
Stacey
Banh mi? Who knew? While Jupiter is in no position to knock Nhu Lan off of my banh mi pedestal, I have to give them serious propers for coming out of left field to deliver a banh mi sandwich that was substantial, tasty and filling. Was it the best I have had? No. Was it tasty? Yes. I might need to try one again, so as to get the true taste of the thing. Truly, I was so shocked to be eating a banh mi from Jupiter that my mind might have been a little, uh, off-kilter.
Why all the shock? Because, up until that experience, I knew Jupiter for decent coffee, ridiculously good cookies and alternatingly indifferent-to-chilly service. A couple of the employees are masters of the side-eye brush off. For real. I have almost had a 'moment' there a couple of different times, but I now know to get in and get out and limit my time with them lest I be forced to say and do something that might cause harm... back. But, this section of Fulton is more populated with rolling tumbleweed than businesses open to the public, so coffee with 'tude is better than no coffee at all. But, that banh mi. Interesting. I might need to re-think this Jupiter Outpost thing.
Really good breakfast croissants, mediocre lunch options, and a kitchen staff that's consistently stabby. Like most hipster joints, the ambiance screams "we're super mellow and totally appreciate your business" but the reality is "dear customer: you're a pain in the rear."
People at the front counter aren't bad, but starting to shop around.
From the street Jupiter is very unassuming but don't be fooled--this place is a gem! The coffee is great and the baked goods are homemade and YUMMY. Their panini sandwiches are also pretty delicious (I like the Jupiter sans turkey).
There is a bit of a morning and afternoon rush but it is never overwhelmingly crowded. It is the perfect place to grab some coffee, crack open that laptop and some books and get work done! And let me just say: they have FREE Wi-Fi! Now that is a rarity in cafes and coffee shops.
It's always clean and the staff is super friendly. The vibe is a little hipster and eclectic, very laid back and minimal. The walls are adorned with art for sale.
Bring your laptop, grab some coffee and a homemade cookie and enjoy!
Hipster cool coffee and lunch / late lunch spot up on Grand just East of Racine, "outpost" is a great word for it since the neighborhood is kind of industrial-ish. Â
Food was very good (tough to mess up a breakfast sandwich) and the coffee was way above average. People were down to earth, cool, friendly, and talkative. Â The turtle hanging out in the aquarium mesmerized me for a while. Free Wi-Fi and nice clean tables in an artsy looking open space capped off the experience.
So why not 5 of 5? Â My sausage/egg/cheese on a small English muffin was a little overpriced for the size. Â Next time I'll get it on a bagel. Â We went on the weekend (and walked up there), but parking looked like it could be a little rough on the weekdays.
What's the difference between Chicken Salad and just plain Chicken? Anyone? Anyone? Yes, Jupiter Cafe? No, I'm sorry, they are not the same thing. That is wrong. Very very wrong. 50 demerits from Hufflepuff for that answer.
I wanted to like this cafe. It was interesting decorated with funky art on the wall and a turtle hanging out in an aquarium by the coffee bar. I mean, it's downstairs from an art gallery - the coolness factor is there.
Only the food? Not good! Not good at all! First of all, we ordered from the coffee bar and then had to walk the order to the back of the room for them to take this order and make it. This would be fine, if they got the order right, but no! Somewhere between the girl up front to it being made in the back, chicken salad became just plain chicken sandwich. They did put on the lettuce and tomato I asked for, but nothing else. No mayo, no dressing, just dry chicken and lettuce and tomato on bread.
Or perhaps hey have the worst chicken salad in the world.
Also, it took forever for then to make! Eventually, my colleague had to go back there and ask them what was going on - then they brought it right out. Did they have it made and just did not announce us? What's the deal with that?
They did have free WiFi though - so that was a plus.
If I ate at the cafe, it wouldn't have been a problem - annoying but not a problem. Â I would hav brought it back and the mistake would have been corrected - I hope. Yet, I paid and took it to go, only later finding out I had a dry chicken, lettuce and tomato sandwich. I was hungry, I ate it but I was not happy.
If I had a place like Jupiter Outpost near where I lived, there's no doubt it would become my office-away from home.
I wasn't that hungry, so didn't get to try the grub, but had one of the solid variety of bottle juices and camped out with my laptop to catch up on a few things.
The space is instantly comfortable, and the high ceilings somehow just feel spacious and open instead of making the space feel at all cold. Â There's a giant-sized painted turtle chilling in a big old tank, and the noise level here was decidedly low but not awkwardly quiet. Â Nobody was yammering away too loudly on a phone, but it wasn't like it was feeling funereal, either.
I can't really give it a full-on five stars, since I have yet to try to food, but it's certainly a place I have marked for a return visit. Oh - good music selection playing too. Some may not care about that kinda thing, but I think it's an extra bonus to find that in a cafe/coffee shop.
This is a hidden gem, amongst the 4 Starbucks and 1 other independent cafe in the west loop!
It's large, friendly, with free wifi and outdoor seating [with a full view of trucks loading and unloading food] in the summer. They offer Vietnamese coffee in addition to the usual lattes & coffees, plus a small selection of baked goods [at least they aren't the boxed Starbucks variety]. The breakfast sandwiches are great, and a guilty pleasure! Haven't tried their Banh Mi sandwiches yet, but hope to soon.
My only wish is that they had longer hours, as I'm sure many of us would continue to work there late!
Cool vibe. Little chilly. Sweet turtle.
This is a good spot for me to get some mega-work done while I'm waiting for my oil to be changed down the road.
I can't really comment on the food cause I just got a large coffee. And not being a regular coffee drinker, I guess I can say that their cream and slpenda are right on par for upping coffee's drink-ability for me.
However the folks who work here are cool and they have a good mix of indie-rock tunes, so I don't feel bad that I forgot my headphones.
HUGE lunch rush here, I noticed. Place was packed and perhaps 5 people deep from about noon-thirty to 1:30. Just sayin...
I LOVE this place. Â No where else can you get a latte THIS HOT. Â Literally even with that cardboard sleeve, it's really hot.
Also, their egg and bacon and cheese croissant sandwich is probably in my top 25 things I ever ate list. Â It's not gourmet by any means but it is greasy and good and great hangover food.
Everyone there has been really nice both times I've been and it's totally a place you could go hang out on your laptop all day. Â Last time I was there I told my friend I wanted to go back to school just so I would have a legitimate reason to come back and study here.
Also the artwork for sale on the walls is pretty awesome too.
I've been a regular at this place only because of the few options near my work. I've been disappointed again and again. If I'm ordering a sandwich, I don't want my only side option to be a tablespoon of fruit because you ran out of potato, and pasta salad. They'll forget the lettuce and tomato here and there. etc, etc.
it's also slightly pricey for what it is, a sandwich shack with two lunch ladies in the back. But they have a couple tasty things. Just don't go for the salmon sandwich.
Great little coffee place in the heart of the Fulton Market area.
I don't even drink coffee, but I've had some yummy tea and the best carrot cake I've ever had !
I am going to have to try some of their sandwiches as well, as they are looking delicious!!!!
Cute outdoor area in the summer!
Stop by when you're biking by or out at the galleries.
I want to love this cafe. I like the atmosphere. Â But I can't love this place.
I was excited to see Vietnamese Iced Coffee on their menu, so I ordered.
But it was farrrr from what I expecetd.
It was served in a plastic cup with a straw.....she mixed up the coffee and milk and make it brown color!!! Â Â It just looks like coffee milk, and tasted like coffee milk. Â HORRIBLE!! Â (Of course, I ordered it for here).
Another time, I ordered cappuccino, and it was served in a paper cup again.
Don't they try to prepare ceramic cups??? Â Those don't have to be fancy cups and saucers. Â I just want to drink my coffee from a real mug.
Who can enjoy the smell of cappuccino and steamed milk through a plastic lid?
I won't go back to this place until they improve this part.
Well i took old Colleen's advise and checked out the outpost.
Word of the wise i spent 50 minutes looking for parking in and around Fulton Market. Lake st was jam packed at 10am, i was able to squeeze into a spot on carroll just north of the cafe. But your best bet is to just park on Hubbard near the tracks and walk south, will save you time and frustration. Or just ride a bike! Plenty of bike rack space.
Staff was extremely down to earth and friendly. Excellent food had a grilled artichoke and sundried tomato sandwich for $4 with a side of fresh fruit. I came for the coffee and the atmosphere. Free wifi. Was interesting to arrive early, sit back sketch the scene, read the paper and watch the flow of lunch patrons. Great mixture of characters, construction workers, butchers and processors, gallery attendants, nurses and suits.
Quiet except for the racket on the fulton st, they were ripping up the asphalt with jack hammers... hopefully that's temporary.
Damnnnnnn, the paninis are STELLAR.
It's quickly become my favorite place to work. I will drive out of my way to come here and settle in for a few hours. I snag one of the big old booths near the wall, plug into a provided power cord, leach off their uncannily accessible wifi, eat lunch, drink slingshots (extra high--powered coffee) and get a metric ton of crap done.
Dig the vibe. Staff is awesome, and the food is absolutely a hit. I just tried one of their new sandwiches yesterday, the Adobe, and it was by far one of the best lunches I've had in quite some time. mmmmm, melty cheese makes me so happy.
So does Jupiter. :)
I have been wanting to visit this isolated cafe for quite some time and FINALLY had the opportunity. Â Unfortunately it's located in the Fulton Market Meat Factory District that seems like Old World Chicago and brings flashbacks of Upton Sinclair's passages from "The Jungle" to mind. Â [I've accepted this bare fact and have taken pride in it since Chicago wouldn't be what it is today without it's blue-collar past.] Â However, I must admit that I'm glad I took the opportunity to visit on a frigid cold winter day when warm meat wasn't sweeping through the air and a hot drink can be enjoyed. Â
Now about the name...
I would have named it 'Uranus Outpost' due to it's vast space (any perverted/"punny" connotation), but the neutral earthy colors, slow spinning ball decorations hanging from the high ceiling and random dimming/brightening of the lights above that remind me "UH NO, IT'S JUPITER AFTERALL." Â I did notice that on the second floor of the building sits Mar's Art Gallery. Â They're just "name friends" and possess no real nexus according to the barista I was urged to ask.
The outpost has a little trademark...other than one of the most beautiful expose brick walls I've ever seen and which stretches the entire east wall's length. Â A TURTLE! Â Yes, Bebe who jumps off her tank's plastic basket, further fitting into the factory neighborhood ambiance. Â I either get the hint that Bebe wants to escape and walk freely around on the wood panel floors, or perhaps she's jealous my Chai Tea Latte. Â I'm impartial but it is definitely one of the best Chai Latte's I've tasted city wide. Â Be sure to wave at Bebe on your way out--She deserves it.
I love a good cafe like Jupiter Outpost that is spacious (neither crowded or requires fighting for an electrical outlet), has pleasant music playing in the background, possesses free/fast Wi-Fi, offers a nice selection of sandwiches and pastries, sells local art (in matted prints), and, OF COURSE A CAFE MUST, friendly baristas who you can chit-chat with.
When a place I was freelancing at moved to the meat packing district, for a while I thought that this was the only walking-distance option around. Once you get past the pig-heads and smell of fish getting in the neighborhood, this place is actually pretty neat.
First, let me say that it is for whatever reason decorated with "art" from a studio next door. This studio does some sort of "digital art", which is beyond me. It seems like they just take crappy photos and play with them in photoshop and then try to sell them at this shop.
But aside from that, there's a pet turtle in there that I love, and guitar hero on a big screen and its always filled with nice smiley people-- both the girls that work there and the patrons.
Some of the first things I ate here were their Vietnamese-style sandwiches. We used to have these all the time back home in Orange County (Big up! Lee's Sandwiches, Fullerton, CA!). These are cold, served on a french roll, with chicken or tofu or fish cakes, garnished with RAW jalepenos, radish, carrots, and other stuff. If you are looking for something out-of-the-ordinary, it'd suggest giving these are try. They are spicy-sweet and the bread is chewy. I love them here and they are like $4 or something.
I would also recommend the soups they have here in the wintertime, as well as the grilled paninis. The salads are a little bland. The coffee here is awesome, as are all their home-baked cakes and pastries. Breakfast sandwiches here are also phenomenal. I've also had co-workers compliment the Vietnamese coffee there, but it sounds like a sugary-heart attack to me personally. If you're having trouble deciding, I would give the special a try. They usually have something written up on the board near the register and its always been delicious.
A pretty cool little spot. We happended upon it when we wanted a place nearby for a sitdown and a cup of coffee. Decent service, nice and smooth coffee and the best muffins in town.
Edited: They've got a cool outdoor seating area on their loading dock. It doesn't have direct sun exposure in these summer months - I highly recommend this for a chill afternoon of reading a book outside.
