This place is a bit of a mystery to me. Â Is it wine bar or a restaurant? Â It's like they can't really decide.
First - they have a truly impressive wine list. Â Period. Â The selection of french wines by the glass is astounding. Â If you want to explore wine without buying bottles, this is a great place to come. Â Also, each time I've come here, the staff has been pretty knowledgeable about it.
On the other hand, the food is hit or miss. Â Sometimes we'll go and get some soup or something and it'll be great. Â but other times, it's like someone is throwing it together as an afterthought. Â It's definitely not the best French bistro fare in the area. Â But it could be, which is why it's a little frustrating.
They have live Jazz on Sundays. Â The crowd on Sundays is usually the same local brunch crowd you see all over. Â
Notably, they are open very late - until 4am, I believe.
I came here to celebrate my birthday last night and had a wonderful evening.
The first thing I noticed as I walked in is that Le Bateau Ivre really reminded me of a real French bistro; as in one that I would find in France. That made me feel great right off the bat.
There was light jazz music playing and it was dimly lit inside. Another plus.
The menu was very nice and had many authentic French selections, and the wine list was very good as well.
We started off with some appetizers for the table: escargot and charcuterie. Both dishes were loved by the table and we were all very satisfied.
Next, I ordered the duck, as did a friend of mine, while the other ordered the mussels. We all found our main courses to be delicious. The duck was tender and came with a delicious side of carrot puree, and the sauce that the duck came with was nothing short of fantastic.
Furthermore, the staff was attentive and very friendly.
Definitely a place I will come back to.
Merci boku!
The only thing not to like about this place is if you can't get in! Â I wandered in here on a Friday night during Santacon and got the last table. Everything was perfect from the start with a warm greeting by the efficient maitre'd. Started with a custom wine flight, continued with escargot and fresh bread and topped it all off with mussels. Felt like I just spent a night in Paris. Go and fall in love.
Review Source:Had a wonderful time here. Even though I wasn't aware I had to reserve ahead of time, the lovely maitre d' was very accommodating towards my friends and I and was able to set up a spontaneous table (small round tables and a stool) for us even though almost all the tables were reserved. The food was great, had the escargot and the salmon and goat cheese dish. The waitress was very patient in recommending wine choices and took the time to explain everything to a first timer like me.
Only could give it 4 stars because the service was great but took a long time to get their attention since there weren't as many waiters.
One of the best french places in this area. Great spot for lunch or dinner, never too crowded either. It's nice that it is on a street rather than an avenue, makes you appreciate the open windows, especially in the summer, without being bombarded with so many people rushing about. Try the mussels frites, they were our favorite.
Review Source:I've had a couple meals here, and have never been disappointed by the food. Â I still remember the non-dairy spinach soup served on my first visit -- it was so delectably creamy that I had a hard time believing it was really non-dairy. The steak tartar was a generous portion size and came with delicious fries, also generously portioned. I once had a cheeseburger for lunch here (felt a bit treasonous, but I had a craving), and it was one of the best I've had. It's definitely not for the faint of heart because it was higher on the grease level and there was quite a bit if meat juice oozing out, but the flavors were sinfully rich and it made for a perfect meal.
Review Source:I came in for an early dinner and had the duck confit which was competently executed and good.
My waitress made two excellent wine recommendations and brought tastings of both despite the fact that I was only ordering by the glass, service that impressed me.
Nice neighborhood French restaurant.
The food at Le Bateau Ivre is delicious. The menu has a moderate number of excellent choices; everyone will find something fantastic. The service is absolutely fine. The prices are quite reasonable for this level of quality. The wine list is large; we had two wines by the glass that I have never seen offered in the United States in a restaurant (Edelswicker and Sylvaner). The spoiler: the loud music track that makes it quite difficult to talk to anyone at your table without yelling. I guess this is the effect they think they need to get the vibe they think they want. I think they're mistaken, sorely mistaken!
Review Source:I was a big fan of Le Bateau Ivre, but on the previous two visits it was noisy and the service was terrible. Â The most recent one I took my elderly parents with one friend and despite the fact that there were only 3 tables full in the restaurant, they insisted on keepoing on really loud music, despite repeated requests to turn it down. Â The chef came out looking particularly distrurb and said "it's our restaurant, we can listen to what we want." Â The food was pretty good, but they took the wrong food on to one guest and kept everybody else waiting for at least 45 minutes (even though, again, there were 3 tables there). Â There requests for a glass of wine were ignored and i just gave up asking.
They found out that it was my parents' anniversary and did bring out complimentary wine, but at that point, I would have traded the time and money for a meal somewhere else.
It's expensive like a bunch of Manhattan restaurants and I'd skip it at this point.
Start your review...I simply love this restaurant very much. While I don't recall if I have yelped before I can tell you that having traveled to France many times and enjoying French food the gem is my best local dining establishment for fine food. Â The menu is diverse and seasonal, yet simple in that is not overwhelming. Â The wine list is superb with very good to great selections of France areas (Loire, Burgundy, Provence, etc) and priced very good in my opinion. Â Most recent we enjoyed a salmon dish and rabbit. Â Both were cooked divine and accompaniment of vegetables was well thought out and matched well. Â As the warmer weather is approaching the selection of Champagne and White wines is worth mentioning. We started with a lovely pink Champagne and enjoyed a Chinon Blanc from Chinon (Loire) with both the salmon and rabbit. Â This is restaurant is priced right for the quality of the food and service for sure.
The ambiance is delightful and feels very Parisian. Space is small but the works well and I have not felt encumbered by the space over the many times of dining here. Â We enjoy the food, the service and the staff very much.
Oh,I am in love with this place. Had my first date with my bf here and since that time I am always happy to be back. Romantic, cute place with some very good wine. Never had dinner here but definitely will one of these days.
My first time here was very romantic with good wine, very nice music and great stuff. We decided to go for dessert (soaked pear in white wine),and they also gave us dessert wine on the house. Oh,dessert-must try it!!!!!!!!
If you re looking for some quite, romantic place, either for dinner or just drinks, definitely go to visit this place. You wont be wrong!
Almost tried the lapin but chickened out, as it were. Steak frites is a standby for me, and was not disappointing. My wife loved her simple tartine. Ambiance is great combination of cozy interior with close view of sidewalk life through wide windows. Service very competent and pleasant, not overdone.
Review Source:Perfect place for a romantic birthday dinner!
Boyfriend took me here last week and we had a simply wonderful meal. Everything was so delicious and although I've never been to France it tasted as authentic as it gets. The escargots were plump and the foie grois melted in our mouths!!! Â He had the duck for dinner and I had the truffled shepard's pie. OMG yum. We had a bottle of pinot noir and for dessert I highly recommend the balsamic glazed strawberries. Light after such a heavy meal! So refreshing with the vanilla ice cream.
We're looking forward to going back to try more! The service was attentive as well and they were great with recommendations as well.
Was staying next door at the Pod 51, did not have a reservation and it was a Thursday, so not a terribly slow night. They found this table for one a place quickly, and the service was excellent and attentive. Steak frites with a big glass of red. Perfection. Lovely ambience, lots of people having fun. I would totally go here again.
Review Source:Went last night with my husband and a friend of ours. Â Good crowd for a Friday night - even though we didn't have a reservation, the hostess was happy to take our name and point us to the bar. Â We sat at a bar table nearby and the bartender brought over our drinks; my friend and I asked for pinot grigio, but being a French place, there's no Italian wine to be found. Â The bartender brought over a pinot gris and explained the taste was similar. Â He was right and we appreciated his attentiveness. Â
Dinner was yum - the pork chop is sizable, the salmon was perfectly cooked, and the skate was very good once I realized I needed to eat around the bones. Â
The one thing we weren't fond of was the pate appetizer - it looked like a large slice of spam and you could taste congealed fat.... not appetizing at all.
Overall though a great experience and we will definitely be back!
A few of us went here for a birthday celebration and it was amazing.  The atmosphere is warm, inviting, and pretty romantic.  The prices are a bit high but the food/wine was all oh-so-worth-it.  Everything was melt in your mouth delicious.  Didn't have room for dessert at the end, but ate it anyway, because who can turn away creme brûlée??
It's a must go.
This place was a great find. A little bit of Paris in busy NYC. I loved everything about it, the atmosphere, the wine, the service - all great.
We were there during one of their free wine tastings which definitely added to the experience. The prices were a bit higher than most wine bars I have been to, but definitely worth it for a glass or two and to feel like you are back in Paris for a moment.
The first croque monsieur I've ever had the pleasure of trying was from here and I'm pretty sure it has changed my life. Â Dee-freaking-licious. Â I'll be back for you, you cheeky little sandwich. Â The wine was fantastic as well. Â Yea I drink wine with my sandwich. Â Don't judge me.
Review Source:Busy week in NYC and it seemed every pub and dining venue was full. Sooooo, I had a thought to go here as I knew the hotel next to it. Not a bad choice either.
We got there & it was busy but the host gave us a table in the centre of this small restaurant/bar. To our delight we were also invited to partake in the FREE wine tasting that night.
I had the moules frites with the typical garlic cream sauce. They were yummy. No hard rubbery slugs like you get at other venues. These mussels were plump, steaming and cooked to perfection. The sauce was not watery or overly garlicked either. Yum!
My friend had a salad, which we were told was appetizer size - not true, it was main dish sized. He enjoyed it. We shared my mussels because there were so many.
The wine washed everything down nicely and the service here was good. This is  a French Restaurant and the ambience was spot on - low lighting, soft music and a gentle buzz from the crowd. We enjoyed everything.
If you're in the mood for some French treats, this is a good hotel restaurant in Midtown East.
I stopped by with my fiancé for a glass of wine on a Saturday night. It was quiet, dimly lit, exactly what I was looking for from a wine bar at the moment. The waiter recommended a Bordeaux which I always avoided - I always disliked it when I went wine tasting both in Long Island and Napa Valley. I told him I loved deep dry merlots so he suggested that i try a Bordeaux, and it was very good. They are very generous with the pour too.
Great place to come enjoy some good wine (they have an great extensive list) and company.
Used to go there several times for lunch, and I really like the place very much. Very much!
But today, they charged me 35$ for Steak Frittes, and I'm quite sure it used to be 28 or something, and I think that's just a tad too much. A big tad.
Sad. It still is a great place, and I will go again. But 35$ for steak frittes.......?
This is a fantastic spot for a date or intimate gathering of a friend or 2... wine list is superb, although not a wine bar for those who are looking for a cheap glass. We ordered a cheese plate to compliment our reds and I was content with the choices, as well as the nuts and dried fruit that comes with it.
The atmosphere was perfect and I look forward to seeing this place when the floor to ceiling windows open up during the warm nights.
For the first time in a few years, I stopped in Le Beteau Ivre for dinner. Â My meal was awesome and the service was superb.
The waiter was extremely friendly (and very French), and recommended an excellent bottle of wine. Â He seemed to really love his job and wanted to ensure that we enjoyed our meals.
I started with a Fench Onion soup, which may been the very best I've ever had. Â I then split a few small plates with my friend. Â The Endive salad was fresh, crispy and perfect. Â The gruyere with black truffles was incredibly rich and flavorful. Â And the Brie tarrtine was amazing, and probably my favorite dish.
Overall, I really enjoyed my meal and know it will not be long before I stop by again for a fantastic meal at this adorable restaurant.
Been going here for nearly a decade now. Cute tiny little tiny bistro with superb wine list and dinner portions of steak tartare & pomme frite (for all you red meat lovers). Whole roasted chicken is delish. Decent pot of mussels. Great charcuterie sampler for after work nibbles and drinks with colleagues. They even have cassoulet! My favorite there is the steak tartare.
They have a tasting tray of wines, 5 for $27 will set you up nicely for evening (and give you a chance to try more expensive bottles without getting whole bottle).
Attentive, French speaking staff. Romantic.
Cons: really loud music due to playlist with identity crisis---country, French 1980s pop, disco, French jazz, disco, 80s music. Tiny, tiny tables in tiny little space.
Ambiance: Over the course of 10 years I've seen locals, people on dates (young and old), drunk after work traveling on business guys at bar stumbling on their ties and briefcases, shrieking (nonstop like a banshee for entire duration of meal) "drunk Joisy Shore" MILFs out on a night in the city, tourists, work dinners, people from nearby UN, permanent missions, and consulates, etc. So there are times i don't go back for a year, go back then find that the bad ambiance has improved with more well behaved clientele.
The only thing I would knock this place for is the loud music. Â At about 7:00 p.m. they cranked it up, and I felt a bit driven out.
However, food was solid French bistro fare and the service and setting were wonderful. Â It felt like stepping off the streets of New York and into Paris, in the best possible way.
We arrived as a group of 7 people without reservations. Â We were seated promptly and received no guff from the waiter for only ordering drinks and appetizers. Â They let us linger as long as we wanted when we were finished eating, in true French fashion. Â
They also were doing a free wine tasting that night, and our entire table was invited to join in, which was a great treat.
Upon leaving, my SO turned to me and said, "You'd better Yelp the **** out of that place" and I agreed. Â Even though we were tourists, we were treated like locals, and I'll be back next time I'm in town.
So, this is mildly tainted by the date we went to check this place out, which is Mother's day brunch.
Firstly, the table was nice, and overall the food was good. However, the service and the attitude??? Not okay. We requested a table, and they gave it to someone else. Okay, we're flexible but...
After we've been seated and pretty much know what we'd like to have, the hostess comes over to let us know that there is a 2 dollar price difference, and the brunch is $2 more expensive.
Come on.
This is only because it's mothers day. If I was them, I'd eat the 2 damn dollars - it's really not worth it to do that, and I was irritated from the start. It's just SO DAMN SHADY
Then I order my food....
It comes out and there's no bacon. My dish clearly had bacon. Instead of the server doing the correct thing and letting me know that the kitchen ran out of bacon (AT NOON ON A SUNDAY BRUNCH?!?!) they instead brought me my food, and just expected I would a) Pay for the brunch and b) not notice.
Instead of course I notice, and I ask for something else, Canadian Bacon, but wouldn't that have been nice to have when my meal was ready? Also, I would have ordered SOMETHING ELSE THAT WAS NOT FOCUSED ON BACON.
Either way, -1 for the menu price difference, -1 for the no-warning on bacon, and -1 for the overall attitude and arrogance I experienced.
Cute French bistro. We were staying down the street and went for a quick lunch. The ambiance was amazing, with lots of dark wood and mirrors...and a good-looking garçon with an adorable French accent. There was also another French patron wearing a beret who added to the ambiance!
Service was amazingly prompt and attentive, although the waiter seemed a little offended that we wanted the check rather thn lingering over coffee and dessert. I started with the cherry tomato and mozzarella salad, which was exquisite in both presentation and taste. My sister enjoyed the French onion soup which she ordered. I enjoyed the moules frites, which was an enormous serving, although the sauce was a little weak. The fries could've been a little crisper. The foie gras was tasty but the accompanying stewed cherries were a little overwhelming, and we could've used a few more pieces of the baguette toast.
I would definitely go again if I was in the area, particularly for the ambiance and that salad! Probably very romantic at night or for a glass or two of wine.
A small slice of Paris by night.
A great extensive wine list, a small but quaint space. I love going here after midnight for that late night meal before 4 am. The mussels are excellent, the steak tartare transports me back to when I lived in Europe and the foie gras is smooth and rich, the way I like it. Definitely a great romantic space but also bring friends to buy a bottle and indulge. The French music in the background, kind service and the open air seating have a certain joie de vivre which will be memorable on those summer nights.
I have been looking for a consistent, relatively affordable French place in my neighborhood and Le Bateau Ivre fits the bill.
The food is high quality and consistent.
Another positive sign is that it is clearly frequented be regulars.
They have a great selection of wines.
I have also really enjoyed the service.
The live Jazz on Sundays during brunch can be a bit much for my taste, volume wise, given the relatively small size of the bar.
They say that the kitchen is open late, until four, and though I have yet to avail myself of this, I look forward to doing so.
This place has a nice vibe, an extensive wine list with a variety by the glass, great service and a dim warm decor.
No rush here, no crowds, just a place to catch up with friends and chat.
The foie gras was perfectly seasoned with some crisps. The lamb was succulent and tender. Done just medium and packed with flavor.
A few glasses of a perfectly paired red and you're just enjoying the night.
Le Bateau Ivre (The Drunken Boat, named after Arthur Rimbaud's poem of the same name) is a super sexy place to take a date, to woo him or her and row your way to make out city.
The ambiance : dark, shadowy, sexy, and intimate. The bar area on the left and the cafe tables in that area are a perfect place to enjoy some of the hundreds of French wines by the glass (250 to choose from!)
The food is very French bistro a vins, and they specialize in seafood, meats and tartines. I love a good foie gras terrine with some crusty bread and a full bodied red. There is very little that could make this girl happier.
The service is done the French way. They leave you alone to enjoy your conversation and your meal and will bring the bill only when asked. To some this can be a nuisance, but take it for what it is: they want you to relax and enjoy your dining experience and company, a la francaise.
How has this little place been so close to my home the past few years and I never knew it existed?
Thanks to bf, he took me here..and I can only speak for the excellent French wine and the drinks. Â But have to review this place on the awesome bar atmosphere alone! Â The place was so cute and the intimate ambience perfect for a date. Â Just loved it! Â Will return to try the tartines and rate the food next time.
Quite possibly even 5 stars, but it's hard to be sure since I came here immediately after enduring a 1-star dinner. So I'm being conservative for the moment, just in case the contrast made it seem extra-awesome.
That said, I really loved this place. Huge selection of French wines, and excellent food (I had the salmon tartare, which I highly recommend). Ambiance was also great. Very classy yet relaxed, and intimate-feeling. Definitely a good date spot. They were even playing good music, wich always gets bonus points in my book.
Service was also excellent. My boyfriend and I sat at the bar, and the bartender was very courteous and helpful.
We'll definitely be back, in spite of the fact that it's not in either of neighborhoods.
