The Lemon Drop onion burgers haunt me constantly...always thinking of them every time I try an imposter. Â
This 50's holdover in a formerly blue-collar town (RIP American Auto industry) has the very best onion burgers I've ever had. Â The grilled onions inside the patty leak out and provide so much taste to the burger. Â It is so good. Â The burgers are generous and well flavored.
The operator insists on cooking the burgers himself so each one is perfect. Â
A must-try are the Hoosier-style Tenderloins - perfectly had with horseradish if available. Â
The building is a small cinder-block structure on a funny intersection, parking is easy but awkward. Â The tables are few but they also serve at a bar. Â Seating for few, but so worth it!!!
Call ahead if you're coming on a weekend, near a holiday, or over the winter as the operator leaves and shuts down for vacation frequently. Â
Kids will love the train going around the 'drop. Â
Lemon Drop - I love you so...
I've been coming here as long as I can remember with my family, and I can easily say it is the best place for burgers in central Indiana. There may not be much else in Anderson any more (besides the empty Wigwam, Gene's, and Art's Pizza), but The Lemon Drop makes the trip worth it. The menu is nearly as small as the diner itself, and everything is worth a try, but my favorite thing has to be the onionburger. Don't bother with Steak n' Shake, and make the trip here instead!
Review Source:The Lemon Drop is a holdover from the days when Anderson actually had employment thanks to all the plants and factories in the area. Â It's a tiny little diner next to Mounds Mall, painted bright yellow and decorated with a 50's (and lemons) theme.
The menu is limited--burgers, fries, shakes, a few fried things--but it's perfect when you want some old-fashioned diner food. Â Fries are plentiful and crispy, the fried fish is pretty damn good for a land-locked state, and the buns are toasted wonderfully on the griddle. Â Yum!
Been by there many a time, but first time I ate there. Â Small diner like cafe with limited menu of various burgers/sandwiches,fries/onion rings. Â The burgers were excellent, though thin and all cooked well done. Â Breaded tenderloin dinner would have been served in "non-sandwich" style had the waitress not pointed that out. Â Good thick center of meat and the breading was not too thick. Â French fries were the thin kind and crisp not soggy. Â Onion ring--I think they were bought commercially. Â True rings of onion, but the breading was thicker than I like. Â Drink refills were free.
Review Source:Delicious food. The burgers remind me of the steakburgers at SteakN'Shake - they're pressed kinda flat once they come off the grill. I usually get a double to bulk up the meat-to-bun ratio. This place has always been packed every time I've been there, but it's worth the wait for a table!
Review Source:Step back in time, order your cherry phosphate with an onion burger and fries and watch Bill cook it up on the grill right in front of you. Â YUMMY.
The waitresses provide great service and friendly smiles.
What I love about this place:
-Onion burgers (two thin patties with grilled onions in between)
-Toasted cheeseburgers
-Vanilla Coke
-Sitting at the counter
-The toy train, always running
-Actual lemon drops beside the cash register for dessert
-Halloween when the place is decked out with all sorts of fun things
-More parking than seats (if you can't fit into the lot you probably wouldn't get a seat for a while anyway.)
-The intimate setting (Never change this, please, Bill.)
While on a sightseeing trip, we were guided here by the Indiana Tenderloin Trail list and the Tenderloin sandwich here did not disappoint (it was on the small side as I recall, but delicious). Â The fries were equally good. Â What makes this place stand out is the lemon milkshake, which was a bit of citrus heaven in a cup. Â Really nice people too.
Review Source:This place is a home town fave. Â Food is great and staff is friendly. Â One drawback is that it is very small and you will probably have to wait for a table. Â On the other hand, though, I appreciate the fact that they have not expanded into something that is completely different from the original. Â Summary...it is worth the wait.
Review Source:The Lemon Drop is another Anderson classic. Â It's been around forever! Â The food is absolutely delicious and the prices are very low. Â The burgers are great, especially if your order them on toast instead of a bun.
A few words of caution: Â If you have a large appetite, you may need to order two sandwiches. Â The burgers are relatively thin, however still delicious.
Also, the seating is very limited so you may want to go at an off time to make sure you have a place to sit.
