Had brunch here with my family, since on a Sunday afternoon many other places have long wait times. Â The food was good and staff were nice. Â I would've rated it a 4-star; however, our waitress brought me plastic utensils with my main course, telling me all the metal utensils were waiting to get washed, also a random drink that we did not have was added to my bill which I had to tell them to remove.
Review Source:I keep asking myself why I keep going there, probably because it's literally 5 steps away from my place. I seriously don't like this place. The owner is the ONLY owner of a business I've ever encountered that is unfriendly. Unless someone she knows is visiting the bar, she is rolling her eyes, looks mad, is just plain dry.She never greets the guest, acknowledges them. My 1st encounter with her was during hurricane Irene. I toughed it out in Hoboken and this place was one of the few open. My boyfriend and i were charged $36 for 2 wraps and she was unable to explain or itemize the bill for us and told us the restaurant was too busy for her to explain to us why the bill was too much. She also claimed to not have a free menu to show us prices. after that I have tried to go for happy hour all night on Thursdays and always get charged full price for drinks, the staff never knows the menu and website clearly states happy hour all night. It just seems like there is NO consistency with prices nor is there knowledge shared by all staff. I hate writing such a review but restaurant owners specially in hoboken where places often have regulars, should practice hospitality and just be neighborly. It could go a long way.
Review Source:I used to come here all the time and it was alot better. we watched restuarant stakeout and wanted to see if anything changed since then and to be honest it was dead the food sucked and we ended up with a stomach ache later on. The steak salad was the only thing that was decent, my fiancess burger we could have made better and the brownie sunday tasted horrible the brownie was bland and hard and the ice cream was old and freezer burned! After mentioning that it was oh so sorry nothing like let me change it for you or give you something else or take it off the bill. The service was great though! but wont ever go back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Review Source:I love coming to Liberty bar. It is close to home, usually has good music, friendly service and usually can find a seat. The owner, Dawn, is pretty cool and likes to set up to beer pong after games on the tvs.
Plus since it is uptown you get a little better crowd and not always the lets get f#$%ed up crew of kids in college.
Saw this on the fake reality show restaurant stakeout. And since I looked the show up on wikipedia and learned the staff are mostly actors or regular staff told to purposely mess up for the camera and the show is staged.I still wanted to try it.nachos were typical casual restaurant style. Beer was decent. Place was empty on a Friday night.service was slow. Plenty of other places to go in this area
Review Source:After watching Restaurant Stakeout, it was pretty clear that the owner of this bar is some brain-dead princess. She has no clue, and no interest in working at her own business.
Was back in NJ during the holidays, and made the trek to Hoboken just to try this place out, since I had seen it on TV. There is nothing above average about Liberty Bar, and that includes the food. The service was the kind where you have to yell at the waitress to flag her down if you need anything, and then yell again later to remind her to bring ketchup just as you have finished eating the burger and fries.
Considering how many times Willie Degel told the owner that she needed to go back to work in her restaurant, I had hoped to at least see her or some sense of organization. However, it just looked like a lame bar that did not have much business. I did not see the owner anywhere, and I think her employees have not seen much of her either.
I've lived in Hoboken for 4 years. Anyone who frequents this city knows how many restaurants there are. I only ever return to the Liberty (which is one of the closes to my neighborhood) out of curiosity. Each time there has been a different problem. Bad service, but decent food on one visit. Decent service but bad food on another, On my last visit (which looks like it was after the Restaurant Stakeout episode aired), they served me a chicken avocado salad without the avocado. The waitress was pleasant and quick to send me off with a very fresh chopped avocado, but come-one! The place was empty, except for our party of 3 and one other couple!
The owner looks like a nice lady, and I'd like to see her business succeed. She seemed unaffected by the entire hidden camera reveals.
I was fooled. Sitting across the street one night for dinner at City Bistro, I thought my friends and I should give Liberty Bar & Restaurant a shot one night. Unfortunately, I was duped into giving Liberty that shot.
I'm not going to write a long review so let's go bullet style with Pro's & Con's.
Pro's:
Lots of TV's
Free buffalo wings (or so they say) with a pitcher of beer (at least on Sunday night).
That's it.
Con's:
Food sucks.
Not a big place at all.
Pitchers were $11...of Miller Lite.
Hamburgers suck.
Whatever. It was worth a shot right? No it wasn't. I'm not coming back.
The $10 "pitcher" of sangria was so bad that I sent it back and asked that the bartender add ice and wine. Yes, both of those ingredients were missing. And Liberty uses the term "pitcher" very loosely. We were served about 2.5 glasses of sangria in an oversized glass that happened to be in the shape of a pitcher. The salsa and guac appetizer was equally as disappointing. There were far too many chips for the (very small) amount of guac and salsa. Â Needless to say, we didn't bother to stay for entrees.
Review Source:Saw Liberty on Restaurant Stakeout this week and felt compelled to write a review. Unfortunately, the owner doesn't realize that it's not just the unprofessional and idiotic staff that is destroying this place, the food is HORRIBLE. My husband and I ventured back in here 2 months ago (after not coming in for 5 years) to give it another chance. Ordered a beer, it was flat and the glass was dirty, the bartender was talking so much to 2 friends that she ignored us and the other 6 people sitting at the near empty bar so it took 10 minutes to ask her to give us a new beer. Ordered nachos which were inedible. Messing up nachos is next to impossible. When we took one bite and pushed it away she angrily asked what was wrong with them. We paid our check and ran out and will never return. Shame since it's a block away from our apartment and the screens are great for games.
Review Source:They are trying to cut costs, and it shows. Â The portions are way smaller than they used to be. Â And they increased their prices, which wouldn't be so bad if you weren't getting so much less for your money.
We saw someone near us order the buffalo chicken bites and the portion was so pathetically small they sent it back. Â Another table near us received the wrong order. Â So there are definitely issues here.
My beloved Buckeye Chicken Wrap is now just a shadow of its former self. Â My wife's chicken and avocado salad was a few leaves of lettuce topped with not very much chicken or avocado. Â The food tasted ok, but if they are going to survive much longer in this town they are going to have to step up their game.
Also suspicious that they now all of a sudden have 2 Yelp listings (as of January 2012), and the reviews over on their new listing appear to be written by employees or friends. Â Looks like they are getting desperate.
Unfortunately I have to say we will not be racing back.
Liberty has always been my favorite bar in Hoboken. Â Awesome beer selection along with a great menu. Â They still have darts inside and so many TVs, I love that. Â
When the weather is nice we bring Sandy our dog and sit outside. Â The wastress always bring a dog bowl out for her. Â The joint is just off Washington so the sidewalk is never too crowded. Â This way Sandy just lays down calmly while we sit happily and talk.
Came here on a Saturday afternoon to grab a little food, drink some beers and watch some preseason NFL football. Â Liberty Bar was pretty empty when we got there so the 4 of us just grabbed some stools at the bar. Â There are about 12 beers or so on tap with a decent selection. Â We had pretty good service from the bartender during our visit, but it's not exactly like she was really busy. Â I can definitely see how this place would get pretty packed for football games - but then again, it's not very big. Â Has a relatively large circular bar and tables surrounding it. Â On the plus side, they have a lot of big screen TV's so the TV set up here is very good.
We had some issues with the beer while we were here. Â It seemed like everything we ordered from one side of the bar tasted off and funny - very hard to describe - the beer just didn't taste right. Â The funny part was that the bartender acknowledged that they knew they were having issues. Â My thing is, if you know you're having issues, why even serve the beer in question? Â Oh well - the taps on the other side tasted totally fine. Â And, they had Octoberfest - my favorite beer.
We split an order of nachos and they were OK. Â They weren't huge but definitely lacked some toppings and they put the beef on the side. Â I like my nachos extra messy and these definitely weren't the extra messy kind, but they were OK. Â
Overall, it was just kind of an average experience. Â I guess I wouldn't be totally opposed to coming back here, but with so many other options in the area, I'm not sure I'd be back. Â It is an OK place to stop in and grab a beer but I wouldn't expect much more than that.
yikes, 2.5 stars?! i thought this place was more a 3.5 star kind of place (giving them 3 for improvement's sake), and i'm only yelping the bar portion in this review. it was right across from lena, where i just had dinner. they have some decent beers on draft. i ordered a brooklyn cocktail to celebrate being a brooklynite. damn that thing was strong - just how i like it! good ambiance, very spacious (at least at the hour we were there), and legit service. expensive, and nothing *special* about the bar.
Review Source:I had the Turkey Burger. It was juicy and delicious! I am going to keep it in the rotation. The salad on the side wasn't just iceberg lettuce, it's all of the leafy greens, carrots, tomatoes that a health conscious guy like me is looking for. Always a game on, a great bar, the owner greets everyone who comes in, and the service is excellent. Definitely go!
Review Source:This place is usually pretty dead but kind of fun when there's a game on. They have good beer and wing specials. The owner is kind of bitchy, but the servers are super sweet. For dinner, I've had their salads and their turkey burger, both were okay. Bar and Grill-quality, not restaurant quality.
It's nice and spacious so you can go with a group of friends.
I came here on a Saturday afternoon with not that many people in the bar. There was a huge poster advertising $2 pints, but when the time came to pay the bill, the bartender said it was only for "mugs." Essentially, they ripped us off. Â And the nachos didn't even have real cheese. We won't go back again.
Review Source:I went there for dinner on a Saturday night around 6:00pm before work to grab a bite to eat. I was surprised to find the place to be almost empty. I thought for a day and time like that there would be more people there, but it was not the case. The staff was friendly and sat down with me at the bar when they were not doing things. They had big screen TVs above the bar that had major sporting events on and the staff liked to talk about the games.
The food was good but it was nothing to rave about. I ordered the Aloha Burger which came cooked the way I asked. The burger was about $11.00 and the portions were a little smaller than I thought they would be, but I still walked out satisfied.
Overall, I would say the place is good if you are looking to have a couple of drinks and some light food like wings or nachos. I gave it a three because the staff was pretty cool and the prices were about average, but like I said the food was just alright. I will be probably heading back there for future happy hour specials.
We ordered delivery and somehow we ended up with entirely the wrong ordered. I called and the guy at the restaurant checked the order and resent it with in 20 min no questions asked. I say thats a few stars right there. We got burgers. The Blue Moon is fab! The gorgonzola burger is ok. Not bad for a bar food place. Wouldnt say its a fave but its good.
Review Source:I visit my friend in Hoboken often, and we've check out places either downtown or uptown (they live about halfway up Washington) and we found this little place to be a real gem! Â The bartender on Sat. 2/19/11 was the BEST-there were 2 women working that night, and the one who served my friends and I was fantastic (I've worked in restaurants so I think she went above and beyond)-she introduced herself, maintained attentive service, and just in general was sincere and chatted us up-a really nice person. Â I feel like most women bartenders either have an attitude or don't want to serve women at the bar because they think we won't tip or appreciate them or something, but I appreciate being respected as a customer. Â She was really cool. Â
I also liked the atmosphere of the place-even though it wasn't crowded, and a slightly older crowd (most of the bar's occupants were at least in their 30s...bummer lol from a young graduate student), it was nice and relaxed, and we weren't pressured service-wise or anything. Â No creepers there either thank goodness. Â The beer selection was a great diverse group-my friend got Blue Moon, I got the Yuengling, and my other friend got the Long Trail from Vermont. Â
There were a ton of TVs in the place and they had every game on, as well as a DJ, with good music and a variety of songs playing. Â I like how the bar was looking for both the casual sports crowd and the dance crowd as well and yet was not packed with insanity like what is common downtown. Â And even though we did not order food, it is nice that the kitchen is open until 11 pm. Â Pretty sweet!
Overall I really liked how the bar itself was circular in design and had nice quality chairs in the seating area. Â I only wish I could have tried some of the food but I hope to in the future. Â The bathrooms were clean too! Â This place reminded me a classy restaurant I loved back in college at the University of Delaware-Iron Hill Brewery. Â (To my knowledge there is an Iron Hill in Wilmington, DE, on the waterfront, and one on main street in Newark by the college). Â Great place! Â :)
Ok so I don't know jack about Hoboken other than Frankie(that's Sinatra) and Joey Pants came from there.
One Sunday hubby and I decide to take the ferry over and walk around. We get hungry, all the walking you understand, and this place seemed inviting and wasn't as crowded as the other street side places.
We had the nachos:good, the wings:tasty and the french onion soup:WTF!
It was inedible it was SO salty.
But the service was good, the hostess was really friendly, hanging with us and chatting about Hoboken and we had an okay time.
Would I go again?
Maybe.
But it wouldn't be my first choice.
First off: the chicken nachos are superb. Â They are the sole reason this reviewer is giving 3 stars, not 2.
The burgers, however, were not so. Â The burger I ordered was drowning in juice. Â It was fairly well cooked (even though I ordered medium rare) so I don't know how it was swimming in juice and drowning my fries. Â By contrast, my friend's burger was so dry she didn't even finish it. Â If only they could have combined their cooking methods of those burgers we would have been alright.
We visited this place on the 4th of July. On a day when all Hoboken Establishments less than 5 blocks from the river were sure to be packed the Liberty was ill prepared. We waited 65 min. for our food and when it finally arrived it was apparent that some dishes had been sitting and were cold. We did enjoy the Buffalo Bites, but when the check came we found that there were several items on the check that had been added to our table in error. Unfortunately we found the staff to be less than accommodating and were provided excuses.
I would say that if you are on the 14th block of Hoboken, you would have a better experience at City Bistro or The Turning Point.
Went here for brunch the other weekend, it was completely empty in there. We (7 of us) were the only ones in there, plus 2 other tables.
The service was horrible. They gave us 4 glasses of water, brought 2 more out, and then realized they shorted someone and eventually brought the 7th.
Breakfast comes with a complimentary drink, like coffee or mimosa. The server didn't even ask anyone which they wanted, and never asked what sides or what toast we wanted.
The food was just OK. I don't think I would come back.
This is my CHEERS!! I personally love this place. The bartenders are friendly and extremely attentive and the food is fantastic (try the Brazilian salad or chicken pot pie for something other than thy typical burger).  They  have a great gig on wings - $16 for a plate and a pitcher, great accompaniment  for watching games on the zillions of TV's or projection screen.  See you there!
Review Source:Yes, Liberty has many many televisions. Â Great for watching football games on Sunday and Monday. Â I was there on a rainy day and the place filled up pretty quickly for the Sunday afternoon games. Â
If you arrive early, you get to pick the best seats in the house and ask the staff to switch your "targeted" TV to the game you want to watch. Â We were there for 4 hours this past weekend. Â We had brunch there before the 1pm games started, and we ordered drinks, wings and sweet potato fries to snack on at half time. No one rushed us or harassed us about being there for too long. Â It's a good place to get one or two friends together and watch some games.
The food, on the other hand, is not the greatest.... Â I had a western omlete with mimosa for brunch. Â There is an option of unlimited mimosa for additional $8. Â The omlete was just alright. Â The hot wings were good. Â
One sweet potato fries order is enough for 2 people. Â The quality is a hit or miss. Â I had some that came out soggy once, but the last time i was there, they were nice and crispy on the outside, soft and sweet inside. Â
As for dinner, I would skip the Chicken fajitas. Â Tomoato/ spaghetti sauce was used to top off the chicken and bell peppers.... NOT good!! Â More fresh salsa or guacamole would have been much better.
I have to stand up for my local sports bar. I lived in Hoboken for a year and I was happy I lived uptown instead of downtown. I much prefer bars like The Madison, Liberty and Hudson Tavern over the bridge and tunnel crowded places downtown (come on, Bahama Mama?)
I have watched many a sports game here and the waitresses are always more than willing to place you at a table where you can watch your favorite team.
The menu was updated because it was a-not-so-good. I always get the hummus plate and my friends liked their wings.
Definitely give Liberty a chance when you want to watch a sports game.
An unpretentious, unfancy bar with a lot of televisions. Â
In the afternoon and early evening, it's more relaxed than City Bistro, the Madison or Lua (which at that point are focused on their higher-end diinner business); later at night it stays more relaxed than those neighbors, albeit for a different reason: Liberty keeps on a steady keel, while its neighbors shift to (each their own particular, and quite different one from the other) higher-intensity club atmosphere.
Turning to the food -- they do a very nice job with bar-kitchen basics. Â No better nachos in Hoboken, etc. Â Don't be adventurous, or try to go low(er) calorie with this particular menu, it's not the main focus in the kitchen.
I would definitely recommend avoiding this place if you're looking for a meal.
We stopped in the other night attracted by a warm spring evening on their front patio, which admitedly has a nice view of the Empire State Building, but it pretty much ends there...
I was suckered in by the $15 Kobe Beef burger, figuring that any place to list 10 different burgers on their menu, and segment by type of beef has to make a good burger. They don't. It was VERY overcooked and dry (ordered Medium-rare). They put the wrong cheese on it (gorgonzola instead of pepper jack) and screwed up the side as well.
Like one of the reviewers below, they charged me for the refill of my diet coke, and the rest of our party's food was pretty forgetable as well.
When there are so many good food places sprouting up in Hoboken, there's just no reason to put up with a lousy mean like this. Especially one that costs so much.
pass!
Liberty has the casual atmosphere of a true college bar (including a beer pong table!), but also comes equipped with a cool, casual uptown Hoboken crowd. Â The other night my friends and I had been looking for a fun bar with a relaxed atmosphere. Â First, we tried City Bistro across the street, but the crazy party scene and loud music were not what we were into at the time. Â We then walked over to the new Hudson Tavern, but the crowd was mainly 40 year old +. Â So, we headed over to Liberty, which is much larger than it appears from the outside. Â There is a huge, round bar in the center with large booths along the wall. Â A live DJ came on around 11 and was spinning hip hop and classic rock. Â A few people (mainly me and my friends) were dancing near our table, and everyone in the place was having a blast. Â
I have also tried the food at Liberty and was pleasantly surprised. Â A Stuffed Portobello Mushroom was covered with an amazing marinara sauce and melted cheese. Â The large Grilled Chicken Greek Salad was also tasty, but the chicken could have used some more marinade for flavor and moisture. Â My brother's Bleu Cheese Burger was a real guilty pleasure. Â
On a whole, Liberty's fare is standard bar grub, but the laidback, friendly atmosphere is the real reason to pay a visit.
Liberty is a standard dive sports bar equipped with all your standard bar fare, including wings, nachos, Â burgers and fries. Â I'm a huge wings fan, and I haven't been impressed with the wings @ Liberty. Â They just aren't hot enough and the sauce is bit bland. Â I just miss the atomic wings I used to devour back in the upper east side.
Liberty does have some great happy hour specials and on Sunday during football season they show every game and turns into a total scene. Â If you do go on Sunday during football season, you may have a tough time finding a place to sit if you don't get there early. Â
As far as Hoboken sports bars go, as of right now I prefer Black Bear to Liberty, but neither compares to my old stomping ground Bar Coastal in the Upper East Side. Â Change can be tough, so I'll check back a year from now and perhaps I'll have developed a better relationship with Liberty. Â After all, it's only three blocks from my place.
Liberty Bar is kind of a dump - but what do you expect from a dingy sports bar in Hoboken that caters to the all-day spectator?
I was charged for every diet coke I ordered (hi, free refills?) which was annoying. I got the BBQ chicken wrap which was more like a wrap full of cheese with a few slivers of chicken and maybe a mushroom or two. It came with fries, which I clearly got the ass end of, i.e. I got a plate of nubs and crumbs. Totally overpriced for bar food too.
The bathroom was kind of icky. And the hand soap was to be dispensed out of a squirty ketchup bottle. Classy!
I have no problem at all with the Liberty Bar. Â It is a perfectly adequate sports bar in Hoboken, with a penchant for showing Boston College football games (with sound!) on their projection screen and a few of their hanging HDs.
My requirements for sports bars are generally low, so as long as the staff doesn't screw anything up, I'm pleased. Â The service was attentive without being pushy - they only came over when our menus were closed and if a glass was empty they filled it. Â The food was decent; I've had better burgers, but I won't be having nightmares about this one.
The only downside is the same downside of any bar in Hoboken - you won't find parking anywhere.
City Bistro had an hour wait for a table so we headed across the street to Liberty Bar.  To our surprise they have an extensive menu and  we were seated immediately.  However, after asking for waters for the table our waitress disappeared.  Then another waitress finally took our orders.  I ordered the Buffalo Burger and considered substituting the fries with another side but the $2.50 substitution fee seemed exorbitant.  My burger was over cooked and I could have gotten a better burger at Malibu Diner up the block for half the price.  I would recommend this place to watch a game, get a drink at the bar and order an appetizer.  However, this is not the place to get a meal.
