I've been meaning to review this place for a while. Â It's really a great place in many many ways except for one thing, you can smoke in here. Â Very disappointing. Â But the beer selection, especially draft, is EXCELLENT. Â The prices are ok, the food is great for a bar particularly the pizza and the clientele is about as normal as you are going to get at a bar in Allentown. Â If you are in the area it's definitely worth a stop and if you can get there before 9'ish I'd go out of my way to get there. Â If anyone in charge is reading this... stop allowing smoking. Â You are hurting your business, your customers and your employees. Â If people want to smoke put up an awning for them to go outside.
Review Source:First time dining with party of 5 last nite at the Liberty Street. Wow, what a surprise! Someone in that kitchen really cares about food quality, even if it is small bar/pizza place. The specials menu had seared tuna and fired oysters. Each was only 5$ so I tried them both, and they were excellent. Nice seared ahi tuna served over littice leaves, with two sauces beautifully applied to them, and the plate, wow! The crab cakes entree was also fabulous, although a little cold. My friends 2 pizzas, burger, and an interesting boneless wing bite dish (which is really a chopped chicken breast with their varouis wing sauces on it) all looked good, and they finished it all!! Reasonable beers, and a huge selection of crafts on tap. I look forward to returning. Good Job! Not a fan of the tacos, tho.
Review Source:What a mix. Â Awesome blend of locals, out-of-towners, college students, professionals, ages, income levels...no matter who you sit next to, you'll strike up a friendly conversation. Â The other reviews pretty much establish that this is a beers lovers paradise, 14 taps, endless bottle beers, great specials (mix and match 6 packs). Â Gastro-pub food, what other place has the exotic soups they do? Â Daily specials like $5 pitchers on Wed night with their pizza specials (large pie for like $8, and it's good pizza), Taco Tuesdays..great deals. Â Staff outstanding. Â Knowlegeable about their needs selection, hard workers, very sincere service. Â In the nice weather, dogs allowed at the outdoor tables. Â Best of the Valley.
Review Source:This place has some excellent beers on tap and a wide selection of bottles. Â The staff are knowledgable, friendly, and constantly present without ever being intrusive. Â All the staff wait on all the tables, so there's always someone around to help you if you need it.
While the reason to come here is the excellent tap selection and friendly staff, the food was also very, very good. Â The menu's perhaps a little larger than a usual Tavern/Pub, and everything we got was great. Â I had the Buffalo Chicken Pizza, and I was craving it the rest of the week.
We went over Christmas break, so it may have been less packed than usual (Muhlenberg students would be out of town). Â I could see the atmosphere being not quite as great if it were packed or a lot of people were smoking.
The Liberty Street Tavern has the best pizza I've ever tasted. I'm serious. If you are partial to New York style pizza, you won't find better anywhere. The beer selection is unparalleled, and I seem to recall the cheese fries being addictive, although that is my drunken self speaking.
4 stars rather than 5 only because the bartender pressured me into finishing a bottle of Framboise on my 21st birthday, and the rest of the night was a haze of fruity retching. I'll get him for that if I die trying. Oh, also, the bouncers can be douchenozzles about ID sometimes, but I'm sure that's just the policy and not actually their fault.
This is a great place. The food is excellent and priced great. They have a great beer selection and the servers and service is top notch. This is a smoking establishment but I can look past that even though I don't smoke and hate it. The pizza I delicious and if you like specialty pizza try the Mac Daddy.
Review Source:BOTTOM LINE: Â If you're okay with light/moderate cigarette smoke, and looking for a place to eat decent bar food and have a beer without being bothered by obnoxious college kids or questionable characters, this is the absolute best place to go.
Probably one of the better bars in the Valley. Â I prefer the half hour drive from my house to get here over going to something more local. Â The beer selection is arguably the best around, and their mug-club beer list proves it. Â The tap selection of craft beers is quality, although there are some large-volume selections.
Specials nights are great value, and the food is fan-friggin-tastic. Â Expect to wait a few minutes, though, because it can get busy and your food is made fairly fresh (at least, it seems pretty damn freshly made to me). Â Many of the bottle choices are "get it yourself, server will open". Â If you're looking for something specific, ask.
Hi I love this place- OK thanks.
My friends are regulars here (one has the mug). I'd never been. I tagged along to Taco Tuesday with them, and I am now officially obsessed. The tacos are INSANELY good. Seriously, I ate both of the two huge ones and considered ordering more. The button on my jeans deterred me; however, I kept downing brews as the selection there is fantastic.
Atmosphere? Relaxed. Fun. A great place to wind down with absolutely no pretentiousness. The staff is just as friendly (and beer-knowledgeable!) as they can be, willing to joke and strike up a conversation without being intrusive.
... short review, but there's not all that much to say besides this is a "must go" if you're in the area looking for a relaxed bar. Good beer list, good food, good staff, good clientele. I can't wait to go back.
Beer selection second to none. Scarcity of crap macro beers is a plus. That said, I can easily drop a face card in no time. Craft beers can add up fast. Pitchers of Yueng can make this a cheaper endeavor.
Service is responsive and engaging. These are BEER PEOPLE and they do know about beer. Seating and standing room can become cramped quickly, nice tavern feel.
This is a beer only bar. No liquor.
I have been going to the Liberty Street Tavern since I was 21 and have yet to find a bar comparable in beer selection, friendly bartenders, and laidback atmosphere. Â During the day, this place is great for catching a rather inexpensive lunch; I have never been disappointed! Â Coming from the New Haven area, I have to say their pizza is pretty good, but also love their wings (the sauce selection is pretty stellar) as well as their seafood sandwiches and soups. Â Wednesday night after 8 PM is the night to show, $6 for a large cheese pie accompanied by an arsenal of seasonings is very popular.
Besides great food, what the Tavern is really known for is their epic selection of beer. Â They have over 12 taps and a huge selection of microbrews. Â The bartenders are very knowledgeable and I have always been given great recommendations. Â My friends and I love coming here whenever possible whether it's a weeknight or weekend.
All in all a great neighborhood bar (if you show up enough they will definitely know your name!) if you love beer, solid pub grub, and a great place to hang with friends. Â This place is very popular among the locals and college kids.
The only downside to this place is that they do allow smoking depending on the day and time (it's especially frequent on Wednesday-Saturday evenings). Â If you aren't too much into the tobacco scene, I would suggest coming there before 8 PM or in the warmer months so you can grab a table outside.
Wow what a nice little hidden gem this place was, but I guess outside of the major cities every good craft beer bar is a hidden gem. Decided to attend the KBS/CBS tap event because I used to go to this bar when it was known as Woody's and was a terrible little dive directly across the street from my former college Muhlenberg. What a difference from the former Woody's.
Tavern on Liberty had about 20 tap lines pouring mostly high quality stuff, they keep Miller Lite, Yuengling and Coors Light on tap because after all there is a college 100 feet away. Behind the bar there is a fridge with bombers and 750's and on the opposite wall of the bar is a fridge of 12oz bottles. The fridges are clearly labeled $3.50 bottles and $4 bottles that you can grab yourself or order from the waitstaff. Um $3.50 and $4 for high quality craft beers? I have to move into the apartment upstairs from this place. Being PA they also do package goods to go and there was a 6-pack price next to the bottle price on the fridge of around $13-14. Also they have happy hour specials of $1 off all draft beer and some food specials every day.
Service staff and ownership could not have been friendlier. When the place thinned out towards the end of the night we were offered full goblets of CBS and I think the house even bought a round of them. We were at a table so i found the staff to be very attentive considering how busy the event was. I've seen people complaining in the forum post about the event that they weren't being served, but they were standing. Don't know of a bar that has waitress service for people standing away from tables. Seeing how they handled chaos I'd love to see how unbelievably friendly and attentive they become when its just an average night. Sherri and her staff knew their products and were passionate about their beer. The place just has a friendly warm environment not seen everywhere. We were even treated to a little homebrew that even though the bottle was promised to a regular, they made sure to save a few ounces so we could all get a taste and I enjoyed it very much. I know I gave my card out to the brewer so please contact me I'd love to get some more of that.
My only complaints were the smoking in the bar(yeah in Jersey and New York you can't do that anymore and as a non-smoker I like that) but the bar can't be blamed for that. And to be honest the pizza wasn't very good but again living where I live I'm treated to some excellent pizza on almost every corner. We ordered some sandwiches for dinner before the event and those were excellent though. One more small word of warning, and no one on this site will even care about this, but they ONLY serve beer. There was absolutely no wine or liquor in the building. I know there's probably some beer guys used to also seeing a good scotch/bourbon/whiskey collection at their craft bar but here its just about the beer and thats alright with me.
Tavern on Liberty is an hour and half drive from me but I'll be going back again and hopefully soon. There's a full casino about 15 minutes away in Bethlehem so I have a good excuse to go out there. Also Brew Works is probably a half-mile away in Allentown
New to the area of Allentown. Â Was very excited to come here and find such an awesome selection of beer. Â The staff is extremely friendly and helpful as well!! Â
Tried a few draft beers and also purchased a mix/match 6 pack ($14, a little pricey, but a lot of beers that wouldn't be easy to fine) and a special edition beer made from a collaboration by Dogfish Head and Sierra Nevada.
Had the blue heat wings, weren't as spicy as we had hoped for, but one of the better sets of wings we have had in Allentown so far (although still doesn't beat Molly's in Bethlehem).
Atmosphere is warm and inviting, and there was a broad age group of patrons which I always enjoy.
Will definitely be back once I am in the area permanently.
This is a great bar, excellent beer selection including drafts, excellent pours (always respect a good Guinness pour). Good food and daily specials and it's really not too expensive for a few beers and a meal.
Yes, the smoking can be a turn-on or off depending on how you see it. I personally was one of those characters that always associated smoking with bars, so it doesn't bother me in the slightest. You don't have to come here if you're adamantly opposed to some second-hand smoke.
In any case, burgers are perfect, fries are hot, crispy and delicious. Wings are substantial in size and for perfect balance I'd say White Heat is the best sauce. The only thing that I didn't find too appealing was the pizza, but then again I've seen plenty of people order it.
Overall, great bar vibe and I don't see a reason to go anywhere else in the area.
Now, let's get this straight - this is one of the few bars in the Lehigh Valley I regularly visit and it's a decent drive from our home, so that alone means something. Â
I was introduced to the place by my boyfriend and mutual friends of ours. Â We're all craft beer fanatics, and considering Liberty St. has many, many amazing beer selections, it's a no-brainer for us to come here. Â What's continued to bring us back on a regular basis is not only the great selection of beer but also the: awesome staff, the food (pulled pork sandwich - TRY IT), and the beer lists. Â The beer lists, for those who aren't familiar are lists of various brews for you to drink, get a signature from the staff on each, and once you complete the list, you basically move up to the next list until you achieve a pewter mug displayed at the bar with your name on it.
Since we all have lists, we come here frequently to try new beers. Â The only downside I see to Liberty is that it's really cramped on a busy night and smoking is permitted. Â That's about it. Â Prices are very reasonable - check it out.
There's only one tavern that can pull me away from what I consider to be my watering hole. Liberty, as it is simply known, has in a sense become my favorite local tavern. Beer...delicious food and beer! Yes, it's worth double mention. Staff is very knowledgable; just tell them what you enjoy and let them pick. If you're a non-smoker beware. But if you can put the lite smoke aside you will truly enjoy the experience! Would I lie to you?
Review Source:Reunion weekend! Why the heck was this place not around when I was in college? Â DAMNIT!!! Â
I'm going to repeat what others have said and force you to memorize that this place has a GREAT beer selection. Â The other bit of info you do not want to forget is that it allows SMOKING. Â
Tasting good beers + in the presence of cigarette smoke = bad thing. Â
If it went smoke free, I'd change the review to a 4-star in a heartbeat.
Literally a fantastic beer selection, almost as good as abe's in Bethlehem (which is only a distributor). Only drawback, poor ventilation system (its still a smoking bar) and pretty much a very homogeneous  crowd. Diversity gets higher during the college year.
Pretty delicious food for just a bar.
This place is a true must for any beer lover, and well they know their selection too.
The staff are awsome and the selections of beers are amazing. This is one place to go if you are looking for a staff that is well knowledged about the selections of beers they have. Although they are across the street from Muhlenburg College, this is not a college bar. It has a neighborhood friendly feel to it. When you go there, ask about the beer club. It is a great way to try beer and get rewards for it.
The only set back and the reason I gave it four stars instead of five stars is the fact that it can get smokey at times. The best time to go if you are a non-smoker would be afternoon (unless the Eagles or Giants are on).
Uhmm...pretty much amazing. Â I have been in town for about two months and this is by far my favorite place to go. Â I went there last night to celebrate getting a new tattoo. Â I bellied up to the bar, only for a beer of course...gotta make sure the tattoo heals properly, and was thrilled to see their eclectic selection of beer. Â I went with the imperial pumpkin and it was an amazing choice. Â They even served it in the proper glass - a thick-sided goblet.
For dinner, I had a portabello sandwich. Â Now, portabello sandwiches are very tricky for me. Â When I lived in Colorado, Rock Bottom Brewing made an amazing portabello and basil sandwich that was hot, delicious and perfectly cheesy. Â Then they quit making it...and I could have cried. Â Since that day, I have been searching for another portabello sandwich that could live up to theirs, and all have failed...
...until now. Â Their portabello sandwich is amazeballs. Â I would even go so far to say that it is better than the one I had back home in CO. Â
Then I got the bill - it was extremely reasonable. Â i had two beers (okay, I know I said I would only have one...but it was just that good) and a sandwich dinner entree and it was $16. Â Well done.
I will be coming back here again and bringing my husband. Â He will love this place.
Liberty Street Tavern, you just rocked my world. Â THANKS!!
It is probably also worthwhile to note that they allow smoking - one of the few places that does. Â BUT they also have a non-smoking area in the back.
This place is truly awesome. I couldn't believe our luck on finding it on yelp while traveling back  to NYC from a work trip to Lebanon. Amazing beer selection, pool tables, good bar food, friendly and knowledgeable staff, fair prices. I would be a regular here if I lived in the area for sure. Oh, and you can smoke in there. Awesome.
Review Source:I thought I should mention that they opened the back room as non-smoking after 5. I'd say that before 5 it doesn't really matter as it's not too busy and you could sit outside anyway.
Best food ever! Great variety with always changing specials. You won't go wrong with anything on the menu.
The best bottle selection of United States micro brews I have ever seen, at no so big city prices!!! Â Good taps too. Â Â Great Beer, Â Really good food. Â Â A small Classy hole in the wall bar. Â A must visit if you are beer connoisseur traveling through Allentown. Â However, go for lunch or any not so busy bar time because it will get a college crowd (seasonal) and on busy nights a giant cloud of smoke develops ( pa tobacco laws) at this bar which was not ventilated well at least the last time I was there. Â Â I had friends from other states that immediately walked out. Â Go out weeknights or weekend lunch to avoid the smoke and enjoy some awesome beer and food!!!!
Review Source:Went last night for a late dinner with my man and his roommates. I'd been once before and was definitely impressed with their beer selection. Lots on tap and even more in bottles -- a lot I've never even heard of, too. What's better, you can buy individual bottles for just $3.50 (yep, any bottle) or a make your own six pack for $13.99.
The menu is varied and full of delicious fare. Both times I've been there I've started with the crab bisque. Thick and chock full of chunks of crab and shredded crab meat. Served in a large portion with 2 pieces of garlic bread. Definitely enough for a meal in itself.
I've also had "The New Yorker," a pastrami sandwich on garlic bread with swiss and mustard. Wow it is tasty. They pile the pastrami high so just half is enough. All of the sandwiches are large enough that you only need half to satisfy any hunger. I would've much preferred if the sandwich had been heated so the meat was warm and the cheese was melted, but it was very tasty. Since I'd only eaten half, the leftovers were quite delicious (heated up in the toaster oven!) at the office today.
The nachos come in quite a large portion and are thick flour tortilla chips instead of the thinner, crunchy corn kind. They were smothered in cheese sauce (not really cheese, sadly) and all the fixings were separated in each corner so if you didn't want lettuce or tomatoes or salsa or onions, you could avoid them. Genius. The onions were in rings, so that made it awkward to eat, but it was all good.
The service was a bit slow -- we probably waited what seemed like 20 or more minutes for our check once we asked for it. There was only one fella working as server where they definitely could've used two. It is a place for sitting and shooting the shit for a while, but we were hoping to get our check much quicker so we could get going since it was pretty late.
My least favorite thing about the experience was how strangely high the booth seats on the upper split level were compared to the floor. I'm 5'7" myself and my feet were dangling and I could only touch the floor if I slouched in my seat. Could definitely use foot rests under those tables. Oh and it's a smoking bar (yuck).
Nice, relaxed atmosphere for just relaxing and enjoying great beer and food. Will definitely be back.
This place is great. Such a great variety of beer for your picking. I think the food is really good too for quick bar-type food. I love going there. I can walk from where I live and it has a nice freindly atmosphere. Â The only drawback is you come out of there stinking of cigarettes, bad! I suppose you can expect that from a bar (in PA anyway), but that's the only reason for 4 stars instead of 5.
Review Source:The perfect beer bar all around. Great draft beer selection at reasonable prices. Huge bottle selection, pricey, but this is PA. The service is always fantastic, pints are always properly filled, and the crowd is mixed and friendly. The food is great and reasonably priced. You really can't do any better in the Lehigh Valley. Far better, and much less snooty, than all the yuppie/hipster beer bars popping up in the area.
