    Rooftop patio is awesome.

Prices are a bit high considering what you get.  We had the fish and chips and the potroast.  Both were good.

Our server was great, very present but not on top of us.  We didn't have to ask for much.

I'm torn on how to review The Liffey....

The Liffey is connected/owned by a couple other pubs in the Twin Cities- The Local(personal fave) and Cooper's. They all have similar, but different vibes. The Liffey is probably my least favorite for one distrinct reason: Its connected to a hotel. I can't help it, I just don't like that. It feels poser-y, and even though the decor and vibe is lovely, I can't help thinking that I am in a hotel restaurant.

    The good:

    1. Food is delicious- but pretty much the same as the other pubs
    2. The Irish beers and Big Ginger are always a good bet
    3. The rooftop patio. Go here for this reason alone.

I gave it 4 stars because I do love the rooftop- that's enough incentive for me, with our limited summer days here in MN.

Family always starts the day on St. Patty's here.  Awesome bar and they serve an early breakfast for the holiday.  Never been any other time, but it's a really classic St. Paul bar that I'm sure is awesome the rest of the year as well.

A pretty sprawling rooftop patio with plenty of seating for groups. The HH specials here are very enticing. $5.99 for a wide variety of starters and cheap drinks (wine, beer), only $3-something for a glass of Malbec. Our server was very patient considering we were a decent-sized group who didn't exactly get the timing of our orders in sync. She was very present despite a crowd that evening.

And the food was not bad considering it was "bar" food. We ordered the pretzels, which were warm, soft, and fresh. The cheese sauce had developed a skin. Oh well, I dipped right through that. All the other orders looked good too and were polished off entirely. They even had healthy options on the menu (quinoa sald, veggie burger, etc.), but I was in the mood for a splurge last night.

One complaint: the Blue Moon came out warm. But I'll let it slide this once! (Oh, and the parking in the area is obnoxious.)

The Liffey is one of our favorite spots! With its beautiful, dark woodwork, charming and attentive staff, and a thorough selection of food and liquor at a reasonable price, it's no wonder we can't seem to get much farther down W 7th on a Saturday night. The patrons are... interesting, but if you enjoy people watching you'll be pleasantly surprised. Overall, I would rate the Liffey as my favorite pub in the area.

Stopped in this irish classic before wild game.great atmosphere started with the wee burgers and they were excellent decided to try the Liffy burger for dinner and my gal had the rachel sandwich both were very very good. the potatoe bun is a nice touch to the burger as it holds up to this juicy flavorful meat. the rye bread that the rachel is served on was off the hook i don.t know if i have had any better. really great food and combined with our barkeep Luke and the cold beverages it was a real nice time. so nice in fact that we stopped back in after the game for an app of calamari which was also delish Mindy was our server and she was awesome. So to rap it up excellent food great staff and cold beverages makes the Liffy a can.t miiss stop. Now if i only knew who made that awesome rye bread.

Liffey is a very cozy authentic Irish pub. Food is good, pints are proper, service is warm friendly. Give them a break on the busy wild game nights or when there are big events. These draw a lot of out of towners that can change the environment a bit. I recommend going for some quiet pints and a nice Potroast.

We kept walking until we hit The Liffey. Again, the place was empty on this MN summer night. We grabbed some beers at the bar (I went for an Irish classic, Harps) and walked through the restaurant up the stairs to the outside patio. I'd have to say, it was the perfect mix of "going out" and "at home comfort" that I was looking for. The place was packed, but not full of 20 year olds looking to get smashed. Someone reading on their own, a group of guys enjoying their cherished cigars, and a group of ladies ordering another bottle of wine to share. Our double date/wedding planning party fit right in.

So as much as I may or may not be on the "Minneapolis is better" bandwagon, I'd really love to relocate the Liffey. Even just a wee bit closer, even just west of downtown STP?

Ok, I guess that's impossible. And even if it was, it probably wouldn't be as good.

Anyhow, I've only had the pleasure of eating at the Liffey twice, but both times were slightly heavenly. Possibly even worth the drive all the way into St. Paul ;) The atmosphere at this place is great, especially late night. Such a classic pub atmosphere and a great location.

Now, I like a fancy meal just as much as anyone else, but sometimes a good burger and fries can beat out anything else. People talk about the Blue Door having the best burgers. People talk about Burger Jones and other typical burger joints. They are all wrong. The Liffey Burger will change your life. Period. It comes on a yummy potato bun with fries. I like to add fried onions to my burgers as well. I'm not sure how else to even describe the burger other than delicious. the meat was great, you could tell it wasn't just a frozen patty. The cheese was real, the bun was awesome. The service was great, the wait staff were all super friendly. Plus, they have awesome late night food and drink specials.

I've also had their wings which are pretty great as well. Fall off the bone tender meat, great sauce and a great size (none of those tiny dinky wings some places serve).

Yum, writing this review makes me want to drive over to the Liffey this weekend :)

The Liffey is a great place to meet friends before a game or concert. I recently visited the Liffey with my husband and son. Our server was great, making our son feel special. The food was okay, nothing special. They have great happy hour specials.

Sitting on the rooftop deck on a moonlight night with a Guinness in my hand is as close to perfect as it comes in my world,  Thank goodness the Liffey meets my needs!

Only reason for the 3 stars is the Chicken Curry.  This used to be my go to meal here, but each time I order it, they change it.  Last night it came in a small bowl and was on the dry side.  How can curry be dry?

Looking forward to the post Irish Fair evening activities on the deck this coming weekend.

I wanted to say that the liffy is one of my favorite places and i have had many great experiences in this location. A group of us went last night and we had a great time. The service was good as always. The food has been decreasing in quality. The menu use to be filled with lots of great items that are no longer on it. They have some new things on the menu that are awful  like their curry chicken wings. OMG what irish put would serve something like that,
The flavor seem to be just on the outside and not in the inside so as soon as you bite into it the thing just taste like a chicken wing. It seems that the place is catering to a whole different crowed than they use to. There seem to be more drunk people hanging out now. The place is turning into a sports bar and i fear that it may turn into a dump like mcgoverns. I guess thats where the money is now a days.. Cheap , crappy beer and crappy bar food. Most people in this state seem to appreciate places more based off price and cost rather than the quality of the food.
The liffy is still a great place to go to. They pour a good beer and i will continue to go there till it turns into a mcgoverns.

We stopped in for dinner before going to a Wild game at the XCel Energy Center. We sat on the patio with a nice view of the stadium. I really enjoyed sitting out there and taking in the scene. The glass awning over the upstairs bar is really cool. They definitely have location on their side. But everything else after that was just kind of OK.

The food was OK. I had the ham and Gruyere sandwich, which was kind of bizarre. The ham was great, but the Gruyere was kind of melty cheese sauce stuck between the bread. Then there was a hard crust of cheese on the outside of the bread. It was also kind of just lukewarm. Should have been hotter. Just kind of a weird grilled ham and cheese sandwich. I do highly recommend upgrading to the fries (chips). Delicious and probably better than the sandwich. My husband got a burger and a cup of soup, which he said were fine.

The service was also just kind of OK -- not poor... we got what we needed in a generally timely manner. But nothing super stellar. I was annoyed when a runner brought food for another table to us. Pet peeve of mine, what can I say? Their food looked delicious, but it was all deep fried.

One last note: even though we were there during the allotted hours and there was no exclusion listed on the menu, apparently happy hour is suspended when they are busy -- like before a sporting event. Our waitress kindly told us that no, happy hour was not on because there was an event. To me, this seems counter intuitive and really petty. Like, oh, we know we will be packed so we'll stop offering happy hour deals. Maybe if you offered them and people knew that, they would be encouraged to come early and spend more. Just my 2 cents. But kind of petty to me.

In all -- average. Next time we're down there before a game, we'll likely try something else. There was nothing at the Liffey that would make us return.

    *Sigh*

The Liffey has a lot going for it. The food is mediocre to good (which is decent enough for a bar, I guess), the patio is great and the atmosphere is decent.

But one bad experience, man, and The Liffey has left such a bad taste in my mouth that I wouldn't go there again by choice.

St. Patrick's Day, 2012. They were, understandably, crazy-busy. I'm totally good with that (it was SO expected) and the servers were generally handling everything admirably. I joined a group of three with a friend at around 9. The three had been there for a couple of hours. We had a few drinks ourselves and got the bill at about 10. And...we were charged for 39 hard-liquor drinks.

Um. There was obviously something weird going on. After all, we were all still standing (I'm not saying we were totally innocent of drinking, but absolutely not in those kinds of quantities...especially since the 3 had been drinking earlier that day and were kinda worn out by the time they got there). We asked to speak to a manager and were first dismissed, then were told there was no manager there. (In trying to resolve this issue later, we were told that there were--in fact--THREE managers on duty that night.)

The server insisted that we pay up the full bill without talking to a manager--which we eventually did because excessive belligerence was going to get us nowhere. The situation was rapidly escalating--we were trying to remain calm and explain the situation and the server was incredibly short with us. ("You guys are drunk. Come on!" Um. I had a drink and a half after a full meal...the majority of us were not.)
(In trying to resolve the issue later, the manager was irked that we paid the bill at the time...apparently we shouldn't have done that, but the server made it pretty clear that that was our only choice.)

Speaking to the manager over the next week, we were told that while our check was suspiciously high, some others at the same time had a suspiciously low drink count; the manager suspected that--in his words--the bartender was charging drinks for his friends onto our tab (and comping his friends)...thinking that they wouldn't be noticed.

Um. Okay. Stuff happens. . . and that hefty charge to our credit card for drinks that we didn't order? Yeah. Still there though.

The issue is still not resolved and it's been a complete pain in the butt. I mean--what kind of establishment admits that they were probably wrong and that--even--fraudulent behavior was going on and then...still doesn't fix the issue?

My husband told me not to give the Liffey a bad review because he enjoys going here, but goodness, what an absolutely awful customer service experience. There are other pubs. Many other pubs. I'll go on over to them next time.

I'll be honest, I've never actually eaten anything here but if the food is anything like what's served The Local or Cooper it's probably pretty decent.  I don't usually venture over to St. Paul much but have been here a few times with friends (primarily during St. Patty's day) to meet up for drinks.  The atmosphere of this place is your typical Irish pub flair with a dark wood interior.

During the summer time you can enjoy the amazing views of downtown St. Paul from their rooftop patio and bar.  There aren't any bathrooms near the rooftop though, which has always made trying to navigate their steep stairway back to the restaurant a challenge after one too many Big Gingers...

The Liffey is a cool spot situated close to the Excel Energy Center. Irish by design, this pub beckons attention - the dark wood-work matches the ambience, cool and controlled - who doesn't enjoy a tavern feel while gulping a lager and chowing on some grub?

I've been here a handful of times; from a groom's breakfast, to Halloween, to St. Patty's, to a casual night out. The scene always seems to be busy, and lots of people simply go there to drink.

I like The Liffey for its firm grasp on the principle of good eats: fresh ingredients, a varied menu, and well prepared food that is pleasing to the palate. The food here is good by bar standards, may it be a bit on the expensive side. I do recommend it though, as I haven't had something I didn't like.

If you're in for breakfast try the Egg's Benedict, and throw in a Irish Coffee into the mix for good measure. For happy hour, I'd go with the wings (Guinness inspired) or the Wee Burgers as they are tasty and a good deal. And dinner... well... fish and chips never hurt anyone! Summit battered Cod to represent St. Paul for the win.

I love their decor.  Lots of dark wood, different patterned fabrics covering chair and stool seats, pressed tin ceiling tiles, interesting light fixtures/shades, wide plank wooden floor.  However, the chair I happened to be sitting in seemed very wobbly - my guess it was either broken someplace or it needed to be re-glued.
There were not very many people here so it was more quiet, but with a friendly feel.
Our server was friendly and helpful.
The appetizers I shared were delightful:  mini Reubens and stuffed mushroom caps.  I'd most certainly order them again.
They offer a modest wine selection and plenty of different beers.
Overall, I really enjoyed being in the pub for several hours on a Tuesday night, and I look forward to returning again.

I don't normally think of an Irish pub as the kind of place you could attach to a holiday inn but you quickly forget about the fact that you are next to a very modern hotel. The atmosphere feels very Irish, but yet you are in a place larger than the 20 x 50' pub you might think of. They have a good selection of beer on tape. Some local flares as well as the needed irish brews. They had happy hour prices on apps and drinks which was OK. Not 2 for 1 good but $1 off kind of good. I ordered the spicy chicken sandwich with french fries. It was awesome. The spice was a good kick but it was complimented by a sauce that tamed it down and blended the flavors very well. The fries were a thick cut skin on type. Good as well. It complimented great with a Finnegans.

    Atmosphere: great
Service: (were were the only people in there) It was good
    Food: great
Price: Even with the happy hour price on my one drink the tab was still $23 w/ tip for lunch

I went here for my birthday with a big group. People were coming and going. The waitress was so nice about it and did not seem frustrated with it at all. She did a great job of keeping track of orders and who bought me which drink.

The atmosphere is fun -- there's sports on the TV anytime I've been there. It's has such great character. I like the private table areas and am sad they took a couple down.

My guy friends, who are avid whiskey drinkers, love it here.

Now that it's summer time, and the hockey season is over, it's much easier to get a seat at the Liffey.  So it was nice to return back this week, and enjoy the atmosphere w/o all the general chaos/busyness that is associated game days at the Xcel Energy Center.

I'm ready to claim that rooftop patio this summer, by golly!

I love this place - I don't go there often, I like to keep it special.

They have a great selection of beers of tap (50+) . . . and he bartenders are nice. They poor beers like it's an art, but always get it done quickly. And the food is pretty good, fairly basic pub food.

The rooftop patio is fabulous!! It is gorgeous and has a great view the local St. Paul area. It's very relaxing and a great place to enjoy a beer.

Went to the Liffey with some friends for a meal and some drinks. I was impressed that this Irish Pub was attached to a Holiday Inn- the woodwork gave it character! But the entrance was confusing- the hostess can be reached from inside the hotel. One would think they would have hostess at the door from the street since most people appeared to enter from outside? We immediately striped down to T-shirts and tank-tops once seated. The temperature aha d to be north of 77 degrees. Not so comfortable when it's in the 40s outside.

Overall the food and service were fine. I was intrigued by the Wild Rice Burger - a nice twist on the standard veggie burger you'd expect at a pub. So I gave it try and enjoyed it! The Guinness lover and little bit of Irish blood in me was surprised to see they serve every beer in a Guinness glass. Is that legal?

Classic Irish Pub in downtown St. Paul-- over 50 beers on tap with good pub grub!

I always have to order the fish & chips my 1st time at a new pub.....just like I have to order brisket at a BBQ joint-- The Liffey's fish & Chips did not disappoint!

I really want to LOVE the Liffey, but I can just like it. The patio is beautiful, second to none. The view is awesome and the layout and furniture are very inviting.

The food is just fine. I've never had a bad food, but I've never had anything that has been memorable. The Bitty Lunch is a good deal. I get it with the Reuben, which is kinda dry (more sauce please!). I've also had the Spicy Chicken Sandwich. It's good, very messy, you have to eat it with a fork and knife open-faced. The salads are made with good greens and fresh veggies.

Service has always been so-so. However, this last time I went there must have been some sort of contest/review going on. They were amazing. Even the manager stopped by to see how our lunch was. The server even ran all the way down to the restaurant to grab some hot tea for me. I hope this is a sign of things to come.

The true reason to go is the patio.

    3 1/2.
Went here with a group for a friend's birthday.  The drinks aren't cheap, but if you like whiskey they have a lot.  (I'm not a whiskey fan, I tried a cocktail with Jameson, cranberry, and peach schnapps, it was terrible)
The pretzels were delicious, beware the mustard that comes with them though, its ridiculously strong.

Enjoyed the rooftop patio at The Liffey for the 3rd time in about one month a few nights ago.  My friends and I are addicted to this place!  Happy hour here is the ultimate relaxation.  My husband and I again shared the unbelievable artichoke dip and the herbed mushroom pizza.  My friend's reuben sandwich and fries looked amazing.  Two Skinny Gingers (the light version of the Big Ginger) made for one perfect evening.

Not the cheapest happy hour with drinks around $6 a piece.  Tack on $5 to park in one of the lots nearby.  Well worth it, however, for a great night out with friends.

I've visited the inside bar a couple of times and would consider it just, ok. Nothing special seems to be happening there.
I guess when you are attached to a hotel you don't need to try very hard.

This review is more about my three experiences on their GORGEOUS patio - Easily, one of the best patios in the Twin Towns.
That being said, that is ALL they have going for them.
The service is deplorable. I was just there last evening for the last time.
Since I had gone a couple of times before, I asked myself as I was standing in line, why don't I come to this bar more often. It truly is lovely.
Then my friends and I ordered our cocktails and I knew exactly why I don't go there and will not again.
The bartenders and a gentlemen that looked to be a manager of some sort had the most unpleasant looks about them.
The same pained faces delivered our drinks. There is simply no "fun" going on there. And, to pick a little more, my grey goose martini was short.

I can certainly make my own fun and certainly don't need to be entertained by my bartender and can put up with a little more bs when I am served a great cocktail. But, when I am paying for premium booze and have to deal with bar staff  that look like they would rather be in hell than serve me, I'm over it.
After one cocktail, we were out.

FYI. I have worked in the customer service industry for 25 years and know how it works.
"Fake it till ya make it" brothers and sisters or get out of the business.

Now that patio season has arrived it only seems fitting to throw my praise in the ring for The Liffey. As daunting as it may seem to say something good about a bar attached to a Holiday Inn, this place is doing things just fine in my book.

As for the aforementioned patio, it's arguably one of the best (if not the best) in downtown St. Paul (don't worry W.A. Frost and Happy Gnome - I said downtown). Though with that said, the normal digs inside are A-OK during the other 50 weeks of the year when it's not comfortable to sit outside in Minnesota. As you can imagine, the patio is pretty busy during the summer, especially on the weekends.

The Liffey serves pretty standard bar food with a tad of an Irish influence and is reasonably priced. Their happy hour and wee lunch specials will help ensure you can pay off your credit card balance in full the next month. The drink selections are spot on with what you'd expect from an Irish pub.

Service is generally pretty good, though will lag a bit during the evenings when it gets busy, but that's to be expected. Definitely check this place out on a sunny day or if you're heading to the X for an event.

For some reason, folks don't want to save up for an airline ticket and go to Ireland to visit an "Irish pub" for themselves. I don't know why we'd expect a bar/restaurant in St. Paul to be held to the high levels of "ethnic authenticity" that some posters seem to use as their guide.

Forget the ubiquitous "McPub" discussion for a moment. Let's consider the the Liffey simply on its own merits as a restaurant on West 7th.

So, what does the Liffey "bring to the table"?

    Comfortable interior temperature: Check.

    Chairs, tables, bar: Check.

    Restrooms, male AND female: Check.

Food: Face it, the food is so-so and overpriced. We had the good ol' fish and chips again yesterday, and yes, it does match the promise of breaded fish, slightly greasy, ready for slathering on the tartar sauce and malt vinegar And for $12, why not head over to Mac's on Larpenteur for a newspaper-cone-full of greasy fish and chips.

In the past we've had other items from the menu, including the shepherd's pie, and, again, it definitely is a shepherd's pie. But if you've ever had shepherd's pie made from scratch, you'll know that you are not getting "the best" shepherd's pie from the Liffey

Beer: really limited selection of beer. You may imagine that it favors all the predictable varieties: Harp, Guinness, hard cider. Thank god they have Summit.

Patio: Folks, this is why you should go to the Liffey. On a nice sunny afternoon in spring, go to the patio and order a Summit and a pretzel, and consider the lovely view of the Cathedral, only slightly marred by the parking ramp.

Overall, no matter what "mood" we are in, in terms of food cravings, I think it's fair to say that "I'm craving Irish food" is one of the most rarely opined sentiment. Shame on the Liffey and other McPubs for letting down our tastebuds and limiting the imagination.

The Liffey is a nicely atmospheric, spacious Irish pub. The service is friendly though they seem a bit slow on getting food to your table. As far as Twin Cities Irish pubs go, I think The Local in Minneapolis is better, but The Liffey's not bad for St. Paul.

I tried their house-made Minnesota wild rice veggie burger ($10) which came with fries. The burger can be made vegan if you ask them to leave off the cheese, and to not butter the bun.

I appreciate any place that does their own veggie burger. But they typically make the same mistakes, especially if they're a bar-grill type of joint: the patty is inevitably dry and bland on its own. It all but depends on condiments and lettuce/tomato to add some flavor.

The Liffey's burger suffers from that problem. The patty holds together, at least, but it's just a bit bland. They could make it more moist by adding avocado slices, marinating it in some soy sauce, or redesigning the burger all-together, and making it out of marinated soy product (such as TVP).

I also think the burger could be spicier. Why not add some red chili to the patty?

The fries were good, though, and I like the yellow coconut curry sauce they provide (it looks like mustard, but it's not).

One mild disappointment: the beer menu and draft selection is pretty boring. I'd love to see some micro-brews, or more exotic beers; if I want a Blue Moon, I can go anywhere. A place like The Liffey is too good-looking to have such a mediocre beer selection.

If someone recommends The Liffey, it will be hard to tell whether they're an actual Irishman or whether they're one of those drunks that wears Irish clover leaf garb, draped in the flag of Ireland but is actually only 1/32th Irish.

I say this because The Liffey has a pretty legit vibe to it with good wait service and great pub food: I had the Grilled Whiskey Chicken with fries. From my limited experience, the beer selection wasn't incredible but it had all of the standard Irish drinks that Americans know about.

However, the pub is directly across from the Xcel Energy Center so when there are large events, they will inevitably come into the pub. They'll like it because it has a very nice layout, a pleasant midafternoon mood, excellent service and great food.

And then they will proceed to tell all their friends about this Irish pub they've discovered that reminds them of that one time they had a layover in Dublin.

I'm of the opinion that lighting and music can make or break a bar, and the Liffey scored well on both fronts. The music wasn't so loud that you could hear the people at the other end of the table, and the lighting was a nice level. I think they dimmed it a bit as it got later (we were there for quite a while!) but it never got too dark - which would be really easy because it's sort of a dark decor and vibe to begin with.

The service was really prompt. We went on a Saturday night and were sitting at a table, and didn't have to resort to sending a girl in a low-cut shirt to up to the bar like you have to do at some places to get service. The waitress was busy, but attentive enough and our drinks came promptly. She was even pretty patient with one of my friends who felt it necessary to ponder for a while before selecting (I felt sorry for her, but she handled it well).

Big tables for groups, and it looked like they had a private room. It's a great atmosphere in general -  while we were there, there was a good-sized bachlorette party, a group watching basketball on tv,  we were celebrating a birthday, and a small group of priests there at the same time -- no one was disturbing anyone else, and no one seemed like they didn't belong. I can't think of a lot of bars that could accommodate such a variety of people!

It was very clean, had some really cool decor, and didn't have the massive echoing problem of its sister, the Local over in Minneapolis. We didn't have any food, but I'm sure we'll be back there at some point. Really nice. (We got there early enough to park on the street nearby for free, which was also a huge plus.)

MY first time there. I really only had some cider but it was very good and the perfect temp. At $5.50 for a beer or cider it was I felt a good price. Had to pay for parking but I used the attached lot and it was only $3. It was quiet for a Sat except for my friend who's birthday party we were there for, you could hear him across the whole place. The staff was super nice .

Today's craptastic weather reminded me to review our first visit to the outdoor rooftop patio, on a much better day just last week. It's a great place to have a pint and enjoy the sun, the view of the cathedral on the hill, and your company. Food is pretty mediocre bar fare so I'll plan to come here for drinks after, or before, dining elsewhere.

A classic Irish Pub, with great pours.  It is packed during Wild games and events at the Xcel.  It is a cheap place for standard pub fare during weekday lunches.  I believe they have $10 meals, including tax, tip and a soda.

Saturday night is a good night to visit because it is attached to a Holiday Inn and is a popular place for wedding parties after the reception.  If you can't catch a desperate bridesmaid here, its time to turn in your balls.  She was already picked over at the wedding reception and probably has a room at the hotel.

During the summer check out the rooftop patio, it has a nice view of the cathedral and downtown.

Great atmosphere, including a beautiful bar.
Probably the best Guinnes pour in the neighborhood.  Other bars offer Guiness but I'm sure The Liffey pays attention to keeping beer fresh, lines clean, etc.--you can taste the difference.  I also appreciate being able to get a shot of Powers if the mood is on me.
The menu is basic bar food with an Irish twist.  Burgers are OK.  Instead try the fish and chips, or get something with Corn Beef in it.  Lunch specials available.  Try the patio when the weather is nice.
    Staff is friendly and accomodating.
    I like the Liffey!

Situated in the beautiful and luxurious Holiday Inn, The Liffey can get surprisingly busy, especially when there's a game or event at the Xcel.  The nooks and crannies are nice, but it's also easy to get overwhelmed by the noise, which creeps up to an unbearable level sometime.

Food is decent bar food, Irish-y food, and the same goes for the beer.  Proof to me that downtown St. Paul is starved for some more bars/pubs/restaurants!  Kudos for the small outside bar/smoking area.

This is one the best bars to go to with a kid.  It is huge and the they will put you in a snug so that if the kid starts wigging out you don't have to run out in shame with your drink half finished.  They serve acceptable approximations of traditional Irish food.  Not as good as Kieran's or The Local, but the Sheapard's Pie is just perfect on a rainy day with a pint of Guiness.  As others have mentioned it is perilously close to the X-cel Center, so I'd avoid going there when there is a hockey game about to let out.

For fake Irish in Downtown St. Paul, this is probably the best.  It's nothing like a real pub in Ireland, of course as the food is cooked by humans on the premises and you are breathing a mixture of oxygen, nitrogen and carbon dioxide as opposed to expelled Silk Cut smoke.
