great and unique bar that has introduced and made me fall in love with sours. its nice to be able to drop in for a drink almost any day of the week to an unpretentious and uncrowded spot (so far).
the only gripe i had was the girl working behind the bar tonight. i understand that bartenders (especially female ones) tend to have an attitude and require a tough exterior when dealing with unruly and drunk customers. BUT....its not that busy and it seems like everyones having a good time and she cant even crack a smile or say a friendly 'hello' or 'welcome'? i work in the food industry so i know how important tips are but i dont think its right to assume that you'll be receiving a tip for just pulling a handle to fill up a cup without even giving decent customer service. otherwise every other time i've been there the guys working there have been great and are always more than willing to chat and share their knowledge and passion for beer.
The Local is a fantastic addition to Eureka's food and cultural scene.  A wide and ever-changing selection of  local, American, and imported craft beers and ciders, a pleasant space, intimate yet spacious, friendly and knowledgeable staff, and a great mix of people, always fun and lively. Grab a glass of that rare bourbon-barrel-aged Belgian tripel, hang out with old friends, make new ones, chat with the staff at the bar, and if you get hungry you can order snacks.
Now I would give The Local an enthusiastic five stars, if not for one thing that bugs me a little. I'd only take off half a star for it if I could, but a whole star it has to be. It's just this: almost every time we go in, especially on weekends, there seem to be at least a couple of  children running about, climbing the stairs, and doing the other things they do. Once I and four friends nearly had our whole table of expensive beers upset by a child knocking into it, and if they had spilled then mommy and daddy would have been paying, I assure you. I'm all for child-friendliness but sometimes I think Humboldt County takes it a little too far, and it seems to me that a beer bar like the Local, which is in the business of serving adult beverages, is not an appropriate place for children. But  if you must bring your children into a place like this, then please, please, PLEASE keep them under control!
Whew. OK, Rant over. Seriously, though, kids or not, The Local is a great place and one of Eureka's real gems. Support your local beer bar!
Fantastic local pub with a diverse range of craft brews including my favorite fare...Belgian styles. Ari was an excellent guide through the plethora of draft choices and not only does he know his host bar fare, he knows his beer in general. Great recommendations! If you like Saison's then look for the Upright #7...wish these guys were in SC!
Review Source:We were vacationing around this area and stumbled upon a flyer to this place and decided to stop by. Really cool place and what you would expect from a local beer bar. It was a Tuesday and it was pretty nicely packed for the time we went. The menu is chalkboard paint covered skateboards which tell the price and percentage. I didn't know what to get so I asked for a recommendation and the bartender gave me two tastes and I choose from that. The bartender was really nice, even asking us where we were from and making friendly conversation with everyone. I got the Hoegaarden and my friend got the raspberry one which she loved.Great chill place to grab a drink with friends.
Review Source:Amazing selection of draft beer (and bottled, too, for that matter). Â Always several interesting seasonal beers to try. And with the heavy rotation of taps, there's always something new and different.
My only complaint, as a baseball fan, I'd like to be able to watch the Giants while drinking my beer.
The Local is a fantastic place to go sit with friends or alone and enjoy an expansive list of beers. The owner, Darren  keeps rotating new beers in so you can always get something different when you go.
It has a great chill atmosphere. With a somewhat industrial feel. There is artwork from local artists hanging on the walls and a New mural by a local artist, very cool.
If you are looking for a Bud or Coors this place isn't for you.
This place is amazing. Â The beer selection is crazy and the bartenders are so knowledgeable and friendly! The atmosphere is really modern and laid back. The only complaint I have is that on busy nights they could use a little more space. Â It's definitely my preferred place to hang out and have a drink.
Review Source:My favorite bar in HumCo! Darren and the crew are real beer connoisseurs. Some of the best beers in the country are poured here. There is even a fridge packed with upper level craft beers that you can take home or buy and enjoy there. Great service, great crowd, great vibe! It's definitely a "must-visit" bar. On it's way to becoming legendary.
Review Source:What a blessing to a region already blessed with so many breweries. From the treasure of Blondie's beer selection has emerged a local beer bar with tons of great specialties on tap and always more selection and rarities in the fridge. This place will always have several things not found for hundreds of miles around. Super service, phenomenal selection, and some darn good meat pies too.
Review Source:What other bars in town will let you draw obscene images on their tables? That's what makes this place so special... you can draw to your heart's content on the tables since they double as chalkboards plus you get to drink from their vast selection of beers. Sours, Porters, Stouts, and Hefeweizens, on tap and bottled... oh, and IPA's (but I'm not a fan). And the best part? If you want to try more beer there's even more beer in their fridge. Great chill place to swig a beer and chat with Eurekans.
Review Source:Cool hangout spot! We bring apple slices&cheese and card games...the upstairs are has bigger tables for groups and the chairs are comfy enough to sit in for a while. I don't really like beer, but they had a super yummy cider that I definitely enjoyed. Looking forward to more food choices, and maybe some more deco on the walls (maybe coordinated with Arts Alive??).
Review Source:This place is off to a rousing start and is a beer geek's dream.  With 22 taps and a great selection of bottled beer there is a lot to like here. While they do not give their beer away, they cannot be expected to do so, as there are some really unusual brews being offered including sours and lambics,. That taps rotate so you can probably find something new every time you come in. The ambiance is, well, beer bar, with lots of happy customers drinking from  the appropriate style glass for the beer style, something you do not see often enough. . If you are a lover of fine beer you do not want to miss this place.
Review Source:SERIOUSLY, THIS IS THE KIND OF BUSINESSES NEED IN THE AREA!! Â OK there may be better places out in some big cities, but I think these guys cornered a missing market. Â A NICE looking place, modern, hip, well managed etc.. Â The beer selection is not just local it's well rounded but as far as I can tell Domestic. Â The local beers are some really nice select offerings, the non-local are special harder to find brews from a variety of breweries. Â Again, I hope Eureka and Arcata see the value in offering something more than the usual...
Review Source:Cool vibe, best selection of beer on tap for miles around and fantastic selection of bottled beer. Â Definitely worth a stop if you are a beer geek passing through town. Â "Street" decor and art. Â Drink your Heretic Evil Twin on a stop sign bar table. Knowledgeable staff that aren't just pouring beer, they live it. Â I will be a frequent visitor.
Review Source:Three cheers for the Local! Â
This is such a great addition to the Humboldt beer scene. They have more than 20 great beers on tap both locally brewed and a whole bunch of special beers that you can't get anywhere else in the county.
IPAs, Sour beers, Smoked Porters, Belgians, Barleywine, Trippels, Lambics, Saisons... the list is pretty impressive. They also have a number of great beers in bottles too.
The bar itself has a modern industrial look with a cafe vibe upstairs with tables and chairs.
I'm sold.
