I love this place its a breath of fresh air in Costa Mesa! Very convenient location and great fish and chips. The beer selection is excellent great venue for an 80's club or Mod or 60's northern soul club! They have a list of great variety of Mule drinks. Great outdoor patio and large area for band and dace floor.
Review Source:My husband and I went last night around 5 to check this place out... Â It's right down the street from our house. Â The have an entire menu of different types of Moscow Mule's, and a good appetizer/food menu (appetizers, flat breads and burgers). Â We had the Blue Cheese & Bacon flat bread - and it was fantastic! Â They have a good beer selection (bottle & tap). Â Also, the bartenders/servers were really great - attentive and friendly. Â Overall, awesome new spot and we'll definitely be back!
Review Source:the short: a decent neighborhood bar/lounge that has POTENTIAL......
The good: been a couple times now, and the fast summary is -- this place has potential to be a nice little neighborhood hangout. Its about a one block walk which is nice. Drinks are "cheap" (compared to anything else around triangle square area) but take note -- the MULES, in which they specialize(12 varieties) , are SMALL(er) CUPS. I've had some decent mules at ChapterOne and other spots, with a bigger copper MUG for sure.. The food, albeit a small menu, is decent. There's a few flatbreads -- which have been quite tasty with one caveat -- a little "light" on the toppings IMO. (ie- the carne asada was flavorful but SPARSE). Being with the theme (London, duh) I had to try the fish and chips, and i have to say it was quite good. Three decent sized fish portions, nice crispy batter(pabst blue ribbon, I believe) with lovely steamy fish inside and chips/fries. Again, the fries portion was small but that's a little minute detail. We didnt try them, but saw a wedge salad and a their "classic" burger next to us, both looked pretty good. I'll be trying the calamari next. Dont get me wrong, 3 stars is decent, and there's room to improve/grow.
The bad: we came in on a MONDAY night. Pretty dead you'd think -- but, there was to be some live music, and there was only one waitress/barstaff on at the time (7pm-ish?). To say she was spread too thin is an understatement. So, due to extenuating circumstances, points off for slow/hectic/frazzeled service. For a pub, they dont have that many beers on TAP either, which is dissapointing. Not being able to fully read the taps behind the bar, I asked about one of the beers origins -- she didnt know. I could read and see "angry orchard" as well, and asked what/which cider it was --- she didnt think it was a cider.....oy vey. O.o  . Then, the music started. I'm all for live "Acoustic" music , sometimes it's a nice "backdrop"...but that's what is should be, a BACKDROP. Not blaring through the overhead speaker system so that I cant hear myself or anyone else speak, especially in such a small space!!! Why not just the guitar, and a mic/amp. Or just an amp in the corner for the performer. Using the house system is simply overkill.  Also bad -- being "new" and so close to the Triangle , the Hipster/Douche level is HIGH (although now that people have heard about the London pub, the hipsters should fall off a bit, LOL)
The Ugly: So, I've been to London a few times and many a London Pub. I love it there.... honestly there's really a lot that would, or should, remind you of a LONDON PUB here, save for the giant union jack logo. While it has SOME welcoming elements -- dark wood, Â bar/settings, the layout unfortunately lends itself to a lot of wasted space. And the existing tables look like something that would be set up at Costco. There are 3 HUGE booths that are simply awkard in size and location. There's so much more they could have done to "warm" it up a bit in there -- like maybe some smaller booths along the window or 2nd back wall, and WOOD FLOORS would present a much better atmosphere than the cold, white tile....I'm guessing time, $$$, etc. were the holdbacks. Â Also ugly -- NO HAPPY HOUR. bummer. (but oddly enough, they do have "taco tuesday" specials...which makes me laugh)
All in all, as stated above --- it's got potential. And if nothing else, I can walk a block to have a pint. I'm hoping I can bump them to 4 stars sooner or later.
First I have to say I miss Westside Bar and Grill it was my football season Sunday brunch place. That being said I decided to try this place for dinner. Loved my red pepper flatbread and the Scottish mule drink:) Samantha is an amazing waitress, super friendly and helpful, as well as the bartender Kevin:) The only thing missing is the bottomless mimosa Sunday brunch I used to get at Westside! Otherwise I recommend coming her for a mule:)
Review Source:The place does look good. Â The renovations, including bathrooms, came out nice. Â So far, very limited, but reasonable food menu. Â Although the only thing British I saw was the fish and chips. Â Very small glasses for draft beers - NO IMPERIAL PINTS??? Â Service was fair. Â Hopefully they have a decent happy hour so they can compete with all the new local bars/restaurants. Â Although they may just want a late night crowd. Â I will give it another try in a week or two.
Review Source:Went for the first time on Friday night and it was totally different that it used to be when this place was The Westside Grill. Â It's much more open, they have a DJ and the crowd is much younger. Â It's a very hip vibe. Â Loved the bartenders. Â They were very friendly and provided great service. Â I highly recommend the Fireball Mule to drink and any of the flat breads to eat. Â We will be back!
Review Source:Great neighborhood pub feel. I'm new to area and doing plenty of pub/bar research. Service is great and staff very friendly. Food menu limited while they begin to know their customers which is a smart idea. Sampled the tomato basil flatbread and it was tasty. Nice beer and cocktail selection. I know they just renovated but there is something about a clean drinking and eating establishment that always pushes rating up for me as is the case here. Outdoor patio and plenty of room for live entertainment will also draw me back. Overall great experience and value for money. Nice alternative for the area.
Review Source:I was really sad to see Westside go but London Pub is definitely a worthy successor. Â They're still getting up and running so the walls are a little bare, the menu is limited for the next week or so, and it's hard to tell if it's open because they haven't finished their outdoor lighting yet, but despite all of that, it's still a great place to have a drink and hopefully will only get better. Â Their specialty is Mules -- they have a menu of about six or seven different ones, all for $8 (aka a much better price than you'll find for "craft cocktails" at other bars in Costa Mesa). Â I tried the "Irish" mule (made with Jameson's) and it was delicious. Â I could drink those all day. Â (Side note: it came in a cool copper cup, but we'll see how long those last. Â I'm told Haven used to serve all their drinks in those too until people stole them all.) Â We also tried their sundried tomato flatbread, which was great. Â Perfectly baked and full of salty, savory, cheesy flavor. Â I'm told more traditional British fare such as fish & chips is on its way as soon as the kitchen is fully up and running. Â In addition to the Mule menu, they have a fine selection of liquor and good beers on tap (apparently no Heineken or Stella though, much to one dude's chagrin, but he learned to be adventurous. Â They do have Bud, Corona, etc. though, if you're really looking to play it safe). Â I'm told they will also have a breakfast/brunch menu in the coming months, so those of you who miss the Westside's legendary pajama breakfasts will once again have something to do on Sunday morning.
Review Source:The walls are still a little sparse, but the staff is friendly, the cocktails are reasonably priced, and the food is good. At least the flatbread we tried was good. It was pretty empty, so I'm not sure what the vibe will be like when it gets crowded, but for now it's a great place for a drink.
Review Source:Thank God! There's finally a local bar that's totally awesome! After going to the goat and similar bars, it's really refreshing to have the London pub in the area. Â It's s right where Westside used to be. They did such a great remodel of the inside you can't even tell you're in the same neighborhood. Great prices, tons of different varieties of beer. They even have about 10 Moscow mule choices. Yum!!! We had some margherita pizza and it was so tasty!! The crust was nice and thin, just right. The tomatoes and basil were fresh. It is actually one of the best in the area:) Cant wait to try more! My boyfriend and I are definite fans:)
