Every time I come to St. Matthews, KY I make sure that I visit Lonnie's. I love their Maxwell's on Tuesdays. They have a special on them that day. I also get their chili dogs. The chili is not like Texas chili but its pretty good. Great place to have lunch! Speedy service and very kind owners. It's great to see them every time I visit.
Review Source:You can really tell when an owner cares about their product. Lonnie runs and owns this place and is proud of the food he offers and he keeps his place clean. He will let you try his chili and beef on your first visit and the product sells itself. The burger I had made me think of that corner burger place that you had when you were growing up as a young kid. It was made to order and was delicious! Unfortunately I only found this place as I am about to. Leave the Louisville area, so don't make the same mistake I did and miss out on Lonnie's. It is very worth it!
The one criticism I would give would be to improve the fries. Other than that, I was very impressed by having the same quality product that I had in Chicago a few years ago.
I will start by saying that I LOVE hot dogs. Â This being said I was very excited to try Lonnies. Â I've been in twice now and I've tried two different hot dogs off of their menu. Â My first visit I tried the classic Chicago style dog with a side order of chili cheese fries (another favorite of mine). Â The hot dog was very good but the toppings overall were a little sweet which I wasn't expecting. Â The bun was not to thick and not too thin and was nicely steamed. Â The dog itself was tasty as well. Â The chili cheese fries were just ok. Â The chili was a little sweet for my taste also. Â Sweet is not something I look for in chili. Â On my next visit I had the sauerkraut topped dog (trying to avoid anything too sweet) and to my surprise the kraut was sweet also. Â I've never had sweet sauerkraut before and I have to say I don't prefer it to the classic version. Â I don't know if all this sweetness is a Chicago thing or not but it's not my typical preference. Â That being said the hot dogs themselves are good enough to warrant the 4 stars I gave and I will certainly be bak to try some of the other dog selections.
Review Source:You know what? I'm not going to even waste your time reading my usually long-winded prose. GO! Get a Chicago dog, a gyro or whatever Lonnie is serving. Sit down and eat it in this perfect little out-of-place diner. Listen to whatever great Motown album happens to be playing and just enjoy the moment. It doesn't get much simpler or much better.
Review Source:3 1/2 stars. Â The hot dog was ok. Â The special sauce on the po boy was awesome (just a little bit of a kick). Â The staff/service was excellent--friendly and casual. Â If you live close and are craving a hot dog, then this is a good stop in place. Â If you live farther out, I'm not so sure the drive would be worth it.
Review Source:A good hot dog place is really all about the buns.
Hush. Not that kind of buns.
The hot dog to bun ratio is incredibly important. I don't care how good the bread is, it's still just the functional holder for the yumminess inside. Not only does Lonnie's have huge sausages and hot dogs and tons of toppings (my chilli cheese dog was incredible) but they are proportionally a good part of the meal.
Hush. Not that kind of sausages.
You get that authentic Chicago street fare vibe from the place, the food is simple and great, and the prices are reasonable. I can't believe I didn't try Lonnie's sooner and will be back soon. Go there, eat good food, and get your mind out of the gutter.
;-)
1st and only 5 star rating. This place is better than Portillos in Chicago. Food is priced fair, service is fast, people are friendly, place is small but clean. But I have to say even if all that were lacking-I'd still eat there! The food is awesome. My fav is Italian beef and sausage combo (dipped w/ peppers)
Gyros are a close second (the misses fav)
Good dogs and fries.
Even the kids plate ChiX nuggets are good ($2.50 w/ fries & drink)
I look forward to trying there other specialties- Â I'm addicted!
I lived in Chicago for a year and could not get enough of the style of food. Â Especially the Italian Beef and Chicago Dogs. Â Lonnies Italian Beef sandwich is as good or better than what I had in Chicago. Â Lonnie's is a small little place with about 10 tables and some counter seating. Â Don't let the appearance or size fool you, this place is great. Â The italian beef and the Clark Street dog are a must try, but the rest of the menu is great as well. Â They even have soul food lunches on select days during the week. Â Don't miss out on this place!!
