This was an interesting place to see a show. You can tell the building used to be a gorgeous theater - the upper floors retain the old seats, and you can see where the old box seats used to be. The place hasn't been maintained, so it has a very dive-y vibe. I went for an Indigo Girls show. Most people were downstairs on the main floor where the bars are. There was lots of open space, but not really great sight lines to the stage. Upstairs there was plenty of seating, although the seats are made for tiny people. We sat in a front row so we could dangle our legs through the railing and it was comfortable enough.

They seem to get an interesting selection of performers. If a band you enjoy is playing Lupo's, the location wouldn't be a reason to avoid the show. But unless I was excited to see a particular show, I wouldn't seek out experiences here.

Had a great experience here for The Dirty Heads this past weekend.  For as packed as the place was, the drinks came super fast.  Acoustics were great. I can't wait to come back for another show.

Bouncers are nice. Saturday nights they have Latin Night. I would personally not come here again on a Saturday. Ratchet.

They use the space for events. I have been here a couple of times for concert shows and have not had a bad experiemce. 2 big bars, lots of bouncers. Bathrooms are kinda small. The venue usually gets PACKED with no room to move.

I love Lupo's! I've only been here once but that experience was enough to ensure my return.

As an early Christmas gift to my Pops I went last Fall to see the Warren Haynes Band play. Let me just say they were UNREAL!!! I made the investment so we'd have mezzanine seats in case we wanted to sit down or enjoy the acoustics a bit more. DO IT! Once I went up there I only went back downstairs for the necessary libations.

The sweet sounds resonate so nicely in those rafters and really make you feel like you're standing on stage with the act.

Although I believe crowds are indicative of performers, this show I attended had a great one. Granted we're all Warren Haynes fans and those types of people tend to be on the "chiller" side.

If you're interested in getting a feel for the sound from a live recording, I've included the link to the band's set below. The entire thing is unreal but I recommend breaking in with Set I, Track 8 "Baby Love (Mama's Love)." The vocals are performed by my favorite vocalist Alecia Chakour and a truly unforgettable cover of a great classic.

After a year, friends of mine went to see Marilyn Manson at Lupo's.  They reported that this time, they were suprised.  They purchased balcony seats for the show and once they got to the balcony, a bouncer checked their ticket and another escorted them to their seats.  They reported that maybe Lupo's has made some changes and said that they would go back again.

If this service is a permanent change....Kudos to you Lupo's!

Took a train down to Providence to see Dr. Dog a while back. My friend picked me up and we found parking nearby. It's a sketchy area, but with two of us we felt all right.

Besides that, I honestly had no complaints. The sound quality was excellent (you didn't need earplugs, either), the drinks were par for any venue, and there was space to breathe. We stood back by the sound and lighting area and had a great view of the show.

With a chill band like Dr. Dog it worked, but I could see a more intense band coming in and the place getting really stinky and unpleasant very quick. Given the ticket prices and the space the venue had, I'd definitely return.

I loved the old Lupos; I had so many memories.  I drove down from MA all through senior year and college because they had great shows and even saw Beck when I was in middle school.

When they moved I saw two shows early on: Thursday with Motion City Soundtrack; and Reel Big Fish.  At the time I thought the place was alright.  But after many years I was back for Slightly Stoopid and Fishbone in 2011.  The show was fun but not because of the venue.  It felt like the walls were held together with electrical tape.  Super divey and dark, but given it's huge size it wasn't fun for it to be that way.  Only smaller rock dives are fun; a huge theater this run down makes it feel like your in a tenement.  Lots of rock theaters keep their shit together, but not this one.  I didn't feel comfortable getting too drunk, I felt like The Warriors would jump me any second.

Then again this show (Slightly Stoopid/Fishbone) was packed with people openly smoking weed.  I've never smoked but I'm still pro-pot and it was cool that everyone could do that.  I've definitely not seen a situation like that in any other state in many, many years.  Maybe that accounts for the good reviews.

The thing I like about Lupo's is the range in artists that perform there. You've got everything from rap to indie to hard rock. It's great. Tickets at Lupo's are usually pretty affordable. Yeah, it's a little sticky but who cares? You are at a concert, do you think no one will spill their beer? It kind of comes with the territory. Speaking of beer, they have three full bars that are usually all operating during the shows and all the bartenders I've ordered from have been really nice. I've always had really good luck parking in the area, there is a $5 lot within a short walking distance.

Wonderful venue!  Absolutely no problems with the staff, who are quite friendly. The inside of the venue is quite nice/decorative with cushioned walls and chandeliers. The club seemed more than large enough to hold all of the people there. My only complaint with the venue is staff rush's you out slightly at the end of the show not quite leaving enough time to check the merch tables.

I am quite shocked at the high ratings this place receives.  I mean, I guess if you like a place as hot as the freaking Sahara that you will be looking for a Camel before the nights out, you like a place where most of the people smell like they haven't showered since Lincoln was in office, you like a place where the beer tastes as if it was just poured in to your glass from a mop, you like not being able to move because your feet are literally cemented to the ground from all the drunken stumblebums that smash in to everyone and spill their beers all over the floor, you enjoy not being able to breathe, you enjoy bathrooms that homeless people would avoid, you enjoy a beer shower about every 10 minutes, you enjoy having nowhere to park , and a place so loud your eardrums explode and you're at the Providence Place Mall the next day looking for the best hearing aid you can find ASAP, this is your place!!  I don't get it..  I was there for the Shinedown concert this past Wednesday night.  Luckily I really liked the music..  Because after the show, I really felt like I should go to confession because of all of the above..  I'd avoid at all costs, unless your favorite band is playing there, then I guess you can suck it up for a night.

Went to see Fun. here the other night.  It was great - although I will say that I felt like I was the oldest person in the entire venue, and I am not that that old.  Just like any good music venue, it was a bit crowded with underage-but-still-drinking students.  In fact, I think one might have puked in back of us. Awesome.

there's a coat check with a major line - I didn't use it, but it's a nice option.  There's also a bunch of seating options, totally a perk for us old folks.

The major downside is that the entire place is cash only.  Ugh.

I saw the Deertick show here on Friday night.  It was a venue change from Waterfront Park.  I am thankful the show went on because I was really looking forward to it.

This was the second time being inside of Lupos and it is a great live music venue.  The acoustics are nice.  The music is loud, but not so loud were I feel like I need ear plugs to function.

My only complaint is the place could use a couple of more bartenders.  It took a long time to get a drink.  However, the prices are pretty good for a place like this.

Needs more bartenders, the parking situation sucks, the ladies room is often gnarly.

It's not the Lupo's that I used to go to, but I guess pretty much every club moves to a new location at some point.  This Lupo's is a lot bigger than the last one, and the location is way different.  It's now in downtown, which seems like a cooler area, except parking was a bitch.  I did get lucky and finally found a spot on the street right next door to the club, because $10 for lot parking seems a bit high.

The show I saw was good... Anberlin and the New Politics.  The crowd was a bit angry for the genre -- lots of mosh pits and security didn't seem to do a lot to stop it.  I felt bad for some of the kids in the front.  The venue itself was pretty cool.  Big ceiling, lots of space, and a disco ball hidden in case a dance party breaks out.

So, the security guys are a bunch of tools, like total losers. One in particular, dude with the giant handle bar mustache... get a life man, for real.  This guy would go out of his way to screw with your evening. My friend and I were standing talking after we got in and he comes right up behind us and screams  "You guys need to f#cking move, get the f#ck out of my hallway". Ha, we just looked at him, laughed, and went on our merry way. We weren't even in the way of anything. Besides that, we had a great time here. Sound was pretty good, the place was a bit grungy, but the drinks were on par, and the talent was good. There were aspects of the event that I did not particularly like, but that can't be the venues fault. They did their best to accommodate us.

Would I go back again? Yes.

First things first - I don't think I will ever get over the fact that the Lupo's that I grew up in on Westminster Street is closed. Having said that, I am not the hugest fan of Lupo's at the Strand, but I'm happy that the Lupo's team was able to keep their venue in operation. Even if it is in a space that they share with the Roxy. :Sigh:

What do I like about Lupo's? One, they get awesome national acts. Spearhead, that D.J. that does all the crazy mash-ups that teenagers love, Tori Amos, Jurassic 5, Mos Def and Talib - I've definitely seen some awesome shows brought in by Lupo's. Two, the staff, clad in the standard red Lupo's Heartbreak Hotel Elvis-printed t-shirts, are always extremely competent. Three, although the cups that they serve their mixed drinks in are tiny, they are always very, very strong.

What don't I like about Lupo's? One, why can't they just buy bigger cups for their mixed drinks? I always feel like I am drinking out of a mouthwash cup. And maybe consider dropping the price just a tad? Two, they scaffold the price of tickets for general admission vs. reserved seating on the balcony. I'm sure this has to do with managing the crowds, but I think that I would really like my choice of where I am in the venue. Three, and most important, I have trouble with the sound. I think the sound is stellar on the balcony and in front of the stage that is not underneath the balcony. But if you happen to stand underneath the overhang, which half of the floor of the club is, the sound is rather muffled. Which means moving forward into the throng, elbowing through the crowd, standing still with your arms pinned against your sides, and not having ample room to dance.

    Life is so difficult.

Bottom line: I like Lupo's at the Strand, I respect the history, and there is no way that I wouldn't go to a show because of my gripes above - it's just not my FAVORITE music venue. I miss the Lupo's on Westminster. :Whimper:

I am the girl who will go anywhere to see the bands I love. Distance means nothing, and regardless of the venue, I will suck it up, but Lupo's is starting to wear thin.

The venue itself is pretty decent. Good size, plenty of room on the floor (for the most part) and there are a few bars scattered throughout the place for your drinking needs. Which was perfect the other night when I was literally driven to drink. However since I thought I could go without it when I first entered and declined my "over 21" wristband, it provided to be a little more difficult. When I tried to just show my ID to the (sweet) bartender, she told me I couldn't be served without a wristband. Alright, I know I look about 18, but the fact that there are teenagers all over the floor without wristbands and with drinks leads me to believe something is not going according to plan. After working my way back to the door and finally getting a blue band from the drunkest woman ever (I saw her trying to add in her head, it wasn't pretty,) I made my way back to the bar and reluctantly paid my $5 for the beer that wasn't even filled up all the way. Fine, fine, give me my drink and get me away from the bouncing/groping teens and I'll be content. Until I made my way back to my spot only to have another group of frat boy wannabes light up their doobie right next to me. Seriously?!? I got frisked here once and they took away a Sharpie that I had, but they won't take away pot? Anyone else seeing a problem with this? It doesn't make much sense to me, but then again I'm not on a power trip like most of the bouncers here. Those guys don't do anything until there is literally a kid flying their way from crowd surfing. They think they can stop that from happening by shining a flashlight in the person's face but seem surprised when the same kid goes up for round 2. They yell at you if they see you with a camera, but when they see a cloud of smoke from the audience, nothing. I always want to yell at them or bring things to their attention, but I'll admit they kinda scare me...they look like they could crush my skull without breaking a sweat.

Despite all this, I do love the intimate feeling of Lupo's. You can get very close to the stage, and I've met some bands, gotten some playlists and autographs and the tickets are always decently priced for the great bands that come through here. Like I said before, I'll travel for my bands, but the crowd at Lupo's (and their employees) is starting to lose its appeal.

I hate maps. Luckily, Lupo's is conveniently located just a five minute walk from the providence Place Mall, which is great if you're direction deficient like me.The sign outside of the Roxy may be hard to spot, but if you know what you're looking for, it's not too much of a hassle.

The outside, and basically the whole street Lupo's is on, gives it such a great rock music venue feel. Well, it should, because thats just what it is.

I'm biased. I was among the first five people in line outside the theater. I would say to get outside the show, at the very least, an hour before it begins. I wasn't seeing the most famous person, either though he is to me (Julian Casablancas from The Strokes who put on an amazing show), so being in the front of the line wasn't too much of a surprise. Probably the only thing I did not like about Lupo's was that there was nothing to shield me from the freezing rain while I waited an hour for the show to begin. Maybe if they put some sort of covering, that would be nice.

When I finally go in, a few chandeliers and some grumpy bouncer types greeted me. After I got searched (in these days, I don't really blame people for being so cautious), I walked into the beautiful hall. Fantastic wooden floors, and a bar were great touches to the venue's club-y feel. I loved it.

Even better was that I ran right to the front row. There are no people holding you back from the musician, so its great. When Julian (!!!) came out, i could literally touch his feet. Not to mention, I shook his hand. Maybe Lupo's is getting such a great review from me because I got to shake my idols hand, but whatever.

In all, Lupo's is a great venue for the indie-rock scene around here. Their schedule is packed with really good shows, and I honestly cannot wait to go back again.

I remember going to shows at "old Lupo's" in high school.  From what I can recall of these evenings, the bathrooms were straight out of a horror movie - if soggy paper towels were substituted for blood.
More recently I've been to the "new" Lupo's (when Lupo's took over the Strand, I do not recall) - and I have to say, the bathrooms are much improved. But who goes to a venue to use the bathrooms? (Well, apparently I do...)

In general, I really enjoy Lupo's.  The sound quality is excellent and I love the balcony seating.  (I really shudder at the thought of having the stand through two or three openers... Does that make me old? Yes.)  Another review likened this place to the Palladium and I agree - except it's not in Worcester so it gets extra points for that.

The staff is, as with all other venues, salty.  Some folks are super pleasant and lovely and others are not so polite.  This is to be expected.  Here's a tip: just don't be a jerk and the security guy won't have to yell at you.  If he yells at you anyway, just remember he's the security guy at Lupo's - not your dad. No need to cry about it when you get home. Don't let it ruin your night and enjoy the show.

I didn't really find anything special about Lupo's. Definitely a hard-ass security getting in. Those guys are on power-trips for sure.

The stage is pretty low, thus making it hard to get a good view if you're standing on the main floor.

Nothing special about the lights or sound.

The concert that I went to see was fine. Lupo's did no damage to the experience. But, it also didn't add anything to it.

Lupo's is exactly a-ok venue for me. I was here in May, watching the last night of Franz Ferdinand's spring US tour and from what I remember of the place, it was a medium sized theater, kind of old but not in horrible shape. Stage wasn't too high and the sound was good. I should mark this venue a bit higher because of the amazing concert experience there, but as I'm just grading the venue here and not the actual show I went to, I think it deserves the 3 stars exactly.

There's not enough effective communication between the staff there. I was trying to bring my non-professional camera in that's a bit on the bulky side because of the high optical zoom on it, and got harrassed by one security guard who gave me crap for it and refused to let me through, but when I went to the person in charge, they were fine with it. And there should've been some type of posted policy about cameras before they opened doors- I know it depends on the artist what the policy is, but the venue should give some fair warning.

See my review for The Paladium in Worcester. This is pretty much the same venue just in RI

A nice mid-size venue, pleasant staff. There are places to get away from the crowd (and the show if the openers suck) and inside the hall you can pretty much stand anywhere and see the stage.

Drinks are pricey, but no worse than any other club.

There are very few things that can ruin a They Might Be Giants show.  Lupo's is one of them.  I don't know how they've maintained a 4-star rating - maybe people in Providence have forgotten what a real concert venue should be like.   After all, it's been years since the original (good) Lupo's closed.  If you have a concert venue where only the front 2/3rds of the room can hear the concert, maybe it's time to reevaluate.  I usually never complain about bouncers - I used to be one and I know how obnoxious it is to have people whining about your venue - but these guys were absolutely useless.  It's not a Hatebreed show, you don't need to put on your tough-guy-crazy-eyes-gum-chewing face.  In fact, the whole staff was about as charming as a wet fart.  So thumbs down to that.
The sound quality at the venue was miserable, and we couldn't even hear what the band was saying on the microphones past the 10th row.  Maybe I'm just spoiled with places like the Middle East, the Music Hall and the Roxy - but this building just doesn't carry sound well.
The old Lupo's was so excellent, and I saw some great bands there, but this place is nowhere near as nice as that place.  People in Providence are ugly, too.  Nya.

This is my all time favorite venue to see live music.  It's a smaller venue, but it gets huge names like Radiohead, Incubus, Weezer, and more (I'm a 90's kid).  So you get a to see some amazing bands, and not have to worry about getting stuck in the nosebleed section without your glasses, hearing a great show but seeing a blur of stage lights.

The downside: with bigger bands, the tickets tend to sell out within minutes of going on sale.

There's no getting around the fact that when you travel away from home, you inevitably start comparing places you go to places that you're familiar with at home.  When I first laid eyes on Lupos in Providence, I instantly thought of Lee's Palace in Toronto (<a href="http://www.yelp.ca/biz/lees-palace-toronto">http://www.yelp.ca/biz/l…</a>).

Lupos got the same sort of feel that Lee's has.  It's a wee bit grungy, they cater to the live act, and it's a great place to see live music.  Wider than the room at Lee's, the stage is found in the centre of the far wall with a long bar opposite that is well stocked.  The acoustics are good for the size of the room such that it has, in my time anyway, made acts like Crystal Method, Cowboy Junkies, and David Byrne all sound fantastic.  So impressed with Lupos am I, that I will hop on their website about once a month to see who's playing and curse my luck that I'm not able to be there.  I then find myself on Expedia to see if there's seat sales, and then I realize that I'm staring addiction in the face.

If you get the chance to see one of your favourite acts there, do.

Definitely a fun atmosphere! I saw an indie band here called Explosions In The Sky. I had to park a few blocks away in what I thought was a mall parking garage, but the walk wasn't bad. The bar in the middle of Lupo's is great for drinks as well as a neat architectural aspect to the room. Comfy seating along the wall, in cozy little alcoves. There is a balcony section but I didn't manage to make my way up there.

One of the shows I was supposed to see was canceled, but Lupo's emailed me right away and updated me quickly on any inconveniences that occurred.

I will have to go back soon!

It's weird to go back to some place you once called home years and years later (aaah nostalgia).  I don't want to throw around words like "gentrification," but man, Providence has certainly been on the up and up lately (and even was when I lived there, ooooh so long ago). Sometimes, I feel like I almost don't recognize my old haunts.

The original Lupo's went by-by and was incorporated/absorbed by the Strand nightclub. The the Strand eventually was bought by someone else and finally became The Roxy. So now there's Lupo's At The Roxy.  And while I still miss the original Lupo's Heartbreak Hotel (nothing like being able to almost touch the ceiling if you're on someone's shoulders), I do enjoy the new and improved venue.

The Roxy is an improvement on the Strand as a music venue (I will never ever have the wherewithal to comment on it as a club). The floors have been redone, the layout is better organized, and some of the railings are lower. Granted I'm not sure how this will pan out for a really HUUUUUGE act (Spoon was awesome but not at capacity), but it seems like crowd flow was easier. And even a shorty like me didn't have trouble seeing.

Minus points for the broken ATM though. And the no reentry policy - what oh what are smokers, claustrophobics, and forgetful persons - "I left it in the CAAAR" supposed to do?

I really, really wish there was a venue in Boston, like Lupo's.

Well, there used to be; the Channel.  But, the mob took over that joint, and it got ugly, and they died.

A bunch of acts I'd love to see get booked there, but not in Boston.

I'm sorry, but you can see acts there, that then get booked at the Fleet Pavilion.  I'd rather see the act in a good old-fashioned rock joint.  For way less money, too.

One of my best memories, was riding the Commuter Rail down from Boston, to see the John Spencer Blues Explosion with Billy Ruane, and the Band's Manager, Tommy.

I think Billy was off his medication, because he cleared the car, with his outbursts.

I've seen a few shows at Lupo's and I have to say, I like the venue quite a bit. On the first floor, the stairs offer a solution for shorties like me, who always get stuck behind the tallest dude in the building. I've always been able to actually see the bands here, even at really crowded shows. Just be careful if you've been drinking, the stairs are all over the place. I'm surprised more people dont break their ankles here. I've seen a variety of bands from the ground floor and have never ended up in an impromptu pit. Like any other venue, as long as you're not right up front, you can avoid that mess.
Upstairs, there is seating that reminds me of the Orpheum. Basic theater seating, and a superb view. I saw Iron & Wine in the balcony seats, which was perfect. The balcony is ideal for viewing a lower-key band where you just want to watch and enjoy the music.

Hands down my favorite place to see a show.  I grew up seeing shows in the old Lupo's and Met Cafe, which I grew to love despite their shortcomings.  But the current venue blows me away.  I have seen a lot of shows there since they opened, and every one reminds me why Lupo's is better than all the places in Boston, like Paradise, Avalon, Roxy, and even the Middle East.  The sound at Lupo's is amazing, and the people who work there aren't jerks.  The bathroom is usually clean too, which is a plus.  Whenever given the choice, I will always choose to see a show at Lupo's.  It's rad.

Lupo's is pretty good. They tend to have a mix of big and small acts, but I love that I can see some bigger names like the RX Bandits at a smaller venue like Lupos.

Um, so for more info.. you will always be waiting in a long ass line out the door if you show up early, so if you don't care about moshing in front or listening to the opening acts, just grab some food at the pub across the street and show up late.

Drinks are SUPER watered down, I've never been able to even get buzzed at Lupo's.. 4.. 5.. 6.. drinks, then i give up. even if you tip nice, but you'll get that at most music venues, and I'm sure there are just good bartenders that I've just missed.

Overall, the place is cool and I don't hesitate to catch a show there when a band I like is in town.

I've seen two or three concerts here now and it's a pretty good venue. The steps leading down towards the stage are kind of elusive and I can never figure out where they are when I'm trying to go back up to the bar. It's not a good as the Palladium in Worcester but it is pretty sweet and they get a lot of Alt Rock bands where Worcester gets a lot of Metal bands.

Aw, Lupo's. This Providence venue brings some impressive acts in. It's a decent size, the set up is really nice. (just watch your steps.. there's random stairs that you'd miss if you don't look down.)

The staff are all nice, even when you're confused after just getting punched in the head, hard as hell, during your favorite band. They will even buy you a beer afterwards to take your mind of the pain.

Have been to this "newer" version of Lupo's a few times in the past couple of years. The most recent show I saw - G Love - we sat upstairs and had a great view of the stage and the nonsense that goes on offstage. Watching a show downstairs gets crowded and hot and hard to see the show.... it doesn't help that teenyboppers can get in here and sing along with every song they know.
Love that you can still order drinks and bring them to your seat.

Definitely not the Lupo's I fell in love with but still a fun place to see a show. Go to Trinity Brewhouse before the show to get beers and yummy comfort food!

I've seen great bands here for cheap prices and practically touching them on stage. Upstairs is a cool view too.  And now that Providence has followed suit and gone smoke free, I don't mind journeying out of Boston.

(I've only been here for concerts, not for club nights.)

Decent venue, although the staff is a bit high-strung and they rush concertgoers out of the venue so they can open as a nightclub immediately after shows. Sound system could be better but could be worse. On-street parking isn't too hard to find nearby, plus there are plenty of pay lots close by as well.
