This place is on the OTHER side of the river, the river which divides Portlanders in more ways than one (locals will get the drift), but I was in the area and had to try it out.
First, there is no way I could give them 5 stars, and I'd be struggling to give them even 4. Â It's about 3.5. Â The food is was decent - the centerpiece, being the gyro, was very good, Â the Greek fries had a weird seasoned taste, and the baklava was tasty.
The service at the counter is indifferent. Â This area, north of 26, is generally newer and fairly nice. Â However, this location, in the physical sense, is a dive. Â I would definitely go back if I was adjacent to 26, but I wouldn't ever cross town to eat at the Mad Greek.
Love the Baklava here I can tell they use pistachios very flaky, crispy and yummy. Prices are great for a filling lunch. Be careful when you order greek fries. It's essentially giant size jojos or eating one huge potato. Very tasty would come back again.
Service is okay, you go up to counter, server either decides to be rude or nice. (hence the name Mad) You get your yummy food, sit down, eat and leave.
Place is very casual and parking lot is very small.
This place is so good! As a poor college student, the prices and the location to my campus is really nice. I go and split the mad Greek chicken salad (which is delicious! Fresh and flavorful with good meat) and a large Greek fries with extra Omega sauce with my friend after class. Seriously, even with the other amazing food, I go back every time dreaming of that sauce. And there is enough food to feed us, often with left overs. The people who work there are always really nice, we have never had an issue. If you're in the neighborhood, I would highly recommend it. My favorite is the mad Greek chicken salad, but the grilled chicken sandwich is also excellent, and comes with its own fries so you don't need to get an extra order, like with the salad. Can't wait to try more.
Review Source:Let it be known: I'm not the biggest fan of greek food so I don't really give a damn if this is authentic or not.. It is what it is- a divey deli. I've only had their broasted chicken and greek fries. He gets super angry if you call it jo jo's like they do at Fred Meyer. Their greek fries are so good- it's a huge guilty pleasure of mine as I'm a sucker for spice battered starches. I don't care for their omega sauce so I don't believe it's a must. The chicken is flavorful and juicey as broasted chicken should be. This place is a childhood staple of mine. My parents live within walking distance from this place so we get takeout once in awhile. They have a happy hour I see- Ooooooo.. Aaaaaaah. One of these days I'll have to check out their sandwiches.
Review Source:Definitely love this place! Â I could care less if it is authentic. Â The lamb in the gyros melts in your mouth and the cucumber sauce is delish. Â I usually get the greek special so I can have the greek fries and salad. Â I love the salad, but I can understand others not liking it quite as much because it is a little limp. Â It still hits the spot for me though. Â We go here frequently and I don't see that changing anytime soon.
Review Source:This isn't perfectly authentic mediterranean greek food.
What it is is a great place to get seasoned broasted chicken, and a quick lunch gyro.
The lunch specials are a fantastic deal. $6.99 for a gyro, greek fries (potato wedges with seasoning), and a drink.
I completely agree with the other reviewers, the omega sauce is fantastic and is perfect with the fries.
They have a great selection of sandwiches and specialty gyros. You can order something different each time you go there.
It is a dive, so eat outside, it's cozier out there.
Best lunch value in the Tanasbourne area.
The $6 lunch special is hard to beat in terms of both quality and quantity. Â For your money, you are given a choice of either 2 pieces of chicken, a half-sandwich (which is plenty big) or a gyro with a side of either some serious potato wedges or a greek salad and a soda.
The gyros are top rate and the potato wedges are breaded which makes them heavy, but very tasty.
The location is in a stand-alone building, refreshingly lacking in corporate sheen that dominates most of the surrounding area. Â If you work in the area (Intel, Nike) you should check this place out for lunch. Â Plenty of indoor and outdoor seating and you can't beat the value.
One word review: Â Bogus.
Okay we were out at a British car show and decided to drive our classic convertible to this little place to grab a quick bite on a nice day. Â It looked promising and I recalled that people used to tell me it was good. Â Well, either I caught this place on the worst day ever or the place isn't what it used to be. Â I had a beer and a couple of pieces of fried chicken, and my hubby ordered a Greek salad. Â
They devote a whole section to their fried chicken so I figured it must be decent - WRONG - it was cold, greasy and small - cooked a long time before I came for lunch (about 130pm) and it was fishy tasting to boot! Â Like fish had been cooked in the same oil - maybe calamari? Â I don't even want to know.
The Greek salad should have been a safe bet - SHOULD HAVE - but it too was not fresh - the lettuce was so wilted that it didn't have any bite to it (worse than dressed salad the 2nd day in a fridge). Â I ask myself how hard is it to have decent lettuce when the little 'medium' salad cost something like 6 +bucks. Â
Eeek! Â There are birds nests over the outdoor tables that are crapping on the tables and it's just icky! Â Plus the remnants of other peoples lunches were still there during our whole meal - 3 un-bused tables on a hot day outdoors with garbage and food sitting there. Â
Definitely not going back.
I went here once when I was 17 and I vowed never to return. For reasons that would just detract from this entry.  My best friend talked me into coming here 18 years later.... oh my .... they have remodeled and wow .... none of the reasons I had vowed never to set foot in the building again was  still valid. The food....  since I was unsure of what I wanted my best friend ordered well........ALMOST EVERYTHING..... the guy behind the counter thought we were crazy.... but took the order without laughing. He brought us our selections that really didnt fit on the table and I got to try a little of almost everything. Now Lets just say there was food for days after this.
Greek Fries.... they are Greek fries NOT JOJS'S DO NOT I REPEAT DO NOT CALL THEM JOJO'S. The rather large Greek man behind the counter will yell at you.
I am not sure how I feel about loving this place after hating it for so long as long as I dont think about it too much my head will not explode. I now love this place.
Omega Sauce, Omega Sauce, Omega Sauce. Â That's where it's at. Â
Do not order the Greek Fries without a side of Omega Sauce - or maybe even 2 sides of sauce! Â You'll thank me. Â
My favorite plate here is the Vegetarian Sampler - it's got spanakopita, falafel balls, a veggie dolma, hummus and pita, and a small greek salad - can't go wrong! Â The husband always gets the Mad Greek Sandwich, because he has dreams of one day completing the Mad Greek Challenge (check out their website for more info on that!). Â
The salad has a maybe a touch too much dressing, and the hummus doesn't wow me on it's own (it's delish on the pita with the falafel!), but I definitely enjoy every meal, they've got outside seating and great service! Â And did I mention the Omega Sauce?! Â Yeah baby!
We got takeout here again last night. This time the man on the phone was nice, he even repeated my order back to me and gave me the total. I know you think that's regular, right? but for Mad Greek it's an improvement. He was even PLEASANT.
We got Chicken Gyro's, a large greek salad, a hummus special plate, a spanakopita special plate, and a falafel plate.
The boys liked their gyro's and their salad. The princess liked her pita and cucumbers and olives on the hummus plate, but was kind of upset that the pepperoncini juice made some of the pita wet, but was happy to trade with me for some of my dry pita. I think the spanakopita person enjoyed her food, it had a  small greek alad and greek fries ( big soft wedgy seasoned planks of potato) and she ate all of it. She didn't talk much, too busy eating.
My falafel were small, very dense, and kind of on the cold side. I wondered if they were house made or made from frozen. They tasted fine, but not YUM like I would like falafel to be. My daughter swiped my tahini sauce, I did manage a tad of it, it was good. The tzatziki was also good, but spicy, we're used to it being not spicy. The hummus my daughter got was spicy too, it had a heavy dusting of cayenne on it maybe? anyway, that was surprising.
I don't think I would get the falafel here again, I would go with a Mad chicken sandwich like last time ( that was delicious). But I think this is an ok option for Greek/Middle Eastern Flavors in the western somewhat wasteland hemisphere that is Bethany.
P.S. total for our takeout was $43.
P.P.S. Hubby wants you to know their web page is very hard to navigate, and that not all the food has photos, which he thinks is wrong, it should either ALL have photos or NONE have photos. BTW he does web stuff for a living for a certain shoe place in Beaverton, so he knows of which he speaks.
Have lived around the area for several years now and can't believe I hadn't tried out Mad Greek Deli!
Came in for happy hour which is a great deal. Got the $4 Gyro, $1 Greek Fries, and $2 Greek Salad. With all the awesome reviews I was a tad disappointed in the overall taste.
The Greek Salad tasted like it had been pre-made hours before hand and soaking in whatever dressing for far too long. The lettuce was quite soggy. It would have tasted great if the dressing were left on the side. The Gyro was really nothing special to me. You would think if you are selling Greek only food, ya might pay out a bit more for meat that is not the 'fake' flat and frozen kind. It doesn't taste bad, but even the Gyro 2 Go place a few more miles out has more authentic food. The Greek fries are great! I wish in some instances they were cut a little smaller, but dang they were pretty good. And yes, the Omega sauce wins the day.
Overall the staff is friendly and it's a nice little stop to grab a bite to eat. Prices are reasonable and the food is OK. I would certainly come back to try some other options.
Not bad, not great...
When the old man was in charge (3-4 years ago), the place was a dive and the Oregonian always mentioned the Mad Greek as the best Greek cuisine in Portland. He used to make fantastic mousaka and souvlaki. His attitude is what made this deli unique - he looked like Rodney Dangerfield and he was always grumpy and loved kids.
However, the relatives took over and shortcuts in food prep took place. If you live nearby then I guess this place is OK. Otherwise it's not worth a long drive.
My wife and I went here for lunch on 11.19.11. Â This is a quaint little place on the corner with good food. Â I had the beef / lamb Gyro and it was excellent. Â My wife had a Turkey sandwich and it was loaded with turkey. Â So much she could not finish it!
A great place to eat, I will definitely be back!
So I have been coming here for about 20 plus years. Â And I still order the same thing over and over again so this review is just based off that one plate and the restaurant it self.
On first glance looking at this place you would think it is an absolute hole. Â Well it has looked liked that well as long as i have been going there. Â Just a really run down white dirty building on the corner of West Union and 185th ave. Â And really the inside used to be not much better. Â
But im not sure when they did this but they remodeled  the inside and added a few flat screens and it looks so much better there. Â
Now to the food Damn if i don't love the what they call the Gyro Special. Â Yum yum. Â Love the lamb gyro and it comes with Greek fries and Greek salad. Â I really don't know what the sauce is called that is put in the gyros but they load it up and it is oooohhhh so good. Â The Greek fries are amazing to just the right amount of seasoning and ask for the dipping sauce good stuff all though they charge for it these days. Â
They also have a good selection of beer and wine in there if you are so inclined.
I'm slightly embarrassed for recommending this place to a lot of my work friends. Their experience at mad greek deli was very disappointing. They thought the folks behind the counter were down right rude.
I thought the food is good though... but, "I order an American Cheese Burger in a Greek Restaurant..."
I used to think these guys had the best Gyro I had ever had, now I know I was sooo sooo wrong. Â They have what is an at best Average Gyro. Â Yes I found the Gyro House and Antonio's who do indeed have the best Gyro in town.
Last time I was here I ordered the Greek Salad and a Lamb Gyro, the salad was inedible, the lettuce was limp and had been marinating in the dressing for hours, the salad is over dressed and they make it in the morning and leave it sit all day so by lunchtime it is gross. Â The Gyro was ok, uninspired at best.
One other time I ordered the Greek Fries which again have been sitting around for hours in the heating box or whatever the hell you call it.  Twice I have attempted to order chicken and both times they were out (like not offering to make more, just told me they are out).  How can they survive when  you cannot buy their food?
The place is a dump and the people behind the counter act like they are doing you a favor by taking your order and your money. Â Now that I have found two wonderful Greek Restaurants locally I have no need to go back to the Mad Greek Deli.
p.s. their parking lot stinks, I do not like parking my baby there.
The last few times we've been here the food hasn't been very good at all. The service is non-chalant.
The cute guys are gone and have been replaced with old, angry men.
After having Gyro House I just can't eat anything with meat here.
The Greek fries are so cold and dry they might as well take them straight out of the freezer bag after they were in there for 3 months.
So I've been here a few times and had pretty much the same experience each time.
The gyros are good but not great. I really do enjoy the Mad Chicken sandwich. The "Greek Fries" are good but pretty soggy and greasy from what I've had before. I do love the omega sauce.
The omega sauce and Mad Chicken are what bring me in from time to time.
The staff... well let's just say they aren't the friendliest. Every time I've been there, I was treated as if I was bothering them when I ordered. And heaven forbid if you ask a question about what's in a menu item.
Pondo, Pondo, the ladies in the area, myself included, have long enjoyed drooling over your "Greek God" looks but your looks will fade someday as sure as the quality of your food has.
I've been a long time customer, since 1996 and had been dubbed "Calamari Girl" due to my penchant for your tasty tentacles. My only complaint back in the days when I visited Mad Greek twice weeklly was when you were out of calamari.
My visits dwindled simply because I began working in downtown Pdx. Â That was the ONLY reason. I enjoyed the food, the entertaining banter with your father and the prompt service that was given.
I recently visited after a year's absence and sadly, my experience prompted this review. I don't know if it was due to not having an owner/manager on site but the current staff was slow to acknowledge myself and other guests and the food quality and portions were lacking. I ordered the calamari and was shocked at the portion......did I receive an intro appetizer to the appetizer I ordered? The breading was minimal, texture rubbery  - seasoning was decent.
We also ordered the Greek salad which was drenched in dressing - marinated lettuce anyone? The falafels, which had always been good weren't so hot this time around. The seasoning was good but the falafel was extremely dry as though it had been sitting out all day.
Bottom line, your staff isn't putting any  love into their work or your products.
One positive note; I like the remodeling and expansion that includes a bar and video poker area, also the outdoor eating area has improved. Now, do an overhaul of your staff, set a solid example of consistency and quality and maybe, maybe, we'll give you another shot.
This place came really highly recommended, so I was very bummed  by my experience.  I love Greek food.  Ordered the spanakopita special $8.5. yuk. Slightly flaky, very doughy, all spinach.  Didn't finish.  Big fries were good, salad was good.  My buddy's gyro was quite good, so I may give it another try.....
Also, the owner (who I recognized from the web site) was rude to my friend, when asked what the difference between Gyro Special and Gyro Plate, guy responded , " a dollar." Â Â
dick...

I'm SO fuckin disappointed. I went here specifically because it was recommended by so many  fuckin " Elite's". So this review is of you also.
Nothing Greek here, keep on going.
Those french fries are as Greek as....... KFC.
But that's what they are, spice battered potato wedges. Â Like a bad experiment at KFC's HQ, to see what FFA's (Fat Fuckin American's) will eat next. Â If these are the best GREEK fries you ever had, then you never had them before, so why talk out your ass.
Greek Fries: Steak cut fries, Greek Olive oil, dry Oregano, Feta. And if real good, fried in Olive oil. Â Fuckin simple, like Greek food.
Powdered mix Falafel bugs me enough. But at least read the directions so your measurements are correct. Dry salty pieces of shit is what I got. Â
And if your Gyro is not cooked on a spit, slowly. It's called a reheated lamb meatloaf sliced thin. Â Or as I like to call it....
The " Mad Chicken Sandwich" was ok, But not great and not Greek.
This place was established in 1977, and I think they stopped caring about the food they serve around 1980. Â
EIpnvn
I think it's best to say, sometimes old institutions aren't awesome but people still go cause it's an institution. That is not the case here.
This place has been here forever! I remember getting greek fries here after water polo practice. The place has been touched up in the last couple of years, either way it's still awesome.
They still talk to me like a little kid and it still feels very much like that when I step up to the counter.
so to the food. last night we got lamb slouvaki plate, special gyros, and baklava.
first of all, the pita is fresh grilled and fluffy, the tzaziki is garlicy light and a perfect compliment. The meat is peppery and tender. I don't do the sandwiches, no offense but I'm not there for that. I'm there for Greek food. I think the mad Greek sammy is worth a try at least once but the real jems are the lamb gyros and lamb slouvaki. I usually get the gyro but i expanded this time and I'm so glad I did. yummm.
The fries..you gotta get the Greek fries, but be warned they fill you up fast. we got a small side even though we got the special gyro, part of that was that my boy had never been and i wasn't sure if just the little side would be enough..it was seriously plenty. the omega sauce is tasty, it's like a creamy feta greeky thick dip. salt galore!
The surprising gem of the night was the baklava. I love baklava, but always got it from my Persian or Egyptian friends who made it at home. I shy away from the Mediterranean baklava at restaurants usually cause it can be so disappointing and often overly priced.
Not here..at $1.60 a piece it's reasonable. it's a adequate size no complaints there. this..this is perfection. it's sweet sticky honey syrup penetrates all the way through leaving the bottom this fantastic buttery, flaky, base and the layers above flaky and flavorful with just the right amount of nutty goodness.
Even after all these years it's still impressive and still leaves me with a surprise.
Let's say I've eaten at the Mad Greek 100 times. Â Here's the breakdown of what I've eaten:
1x Mad Greek Sandwich
1x Souvlaki Sandwich
98x Mad Chicken Sandwich, side of omega sauce + drink
This is *the best* grilled chicken breast sandwich I've ever eaten. Â From the fresh lettuce to the provolone to the included Greek Fries - it can't be beaten.
The place is quirky, as everyone else below has described. Â Listen, go in, saddle up to the counter, order a Mad Chicken sandwich with a side of omega sauce for the Greek Fries and a drink. Â Give 'em your name, sit down and enjoy.
Okay, so why only 4 stars? Â There are side effects to the combination of the Mad Chicken, Greek Fries and omega sauce. Â You will, and I mean WILL be burping this stuff up for the rest of the afternoon/evening. Â It's not totally unpleasant, and ABSOLUTELY worth it, just be prepared to uh... not go on a first date or something.
After finding out the place intended for lunch was no longer in operation, the quest was on for Greek food today. Â Someone at work mentioned this spot.
After a hard to hear (yeah I listened to music to loud with headphones my whole life) conversation the menu showed up via fax in 10 minutes or so. Â
Phone: Mumbly  mumbles mumbley mumble mubleson
Me: I'd like to place an order to pick up.
Phone  I know boss. That's why we have it. (the phone)
Me. Â I'd like (fill in the lunch order here.)
Phone, I know
Me. Okay
So I roll up on the place...SKETCH AS FUCK. Â Dirty outside, pothole ridden gravel parking lot, no door in sight.
I make my way inside through the tacky as hell patio.
I'm inside, mumble fest resumes.
forehereartego
Me...What
forehereartego
WHAT?
forehereartego
I called in an order for me.
THERE YOU GO, Was that so hard?
26.95 is your total
hand him 30.
That's not what I asked for
This made my day, the attitude is shit, and I love it, great  GYRO.  Tender tasty lamb, a pita that isn't dried out or mealy. Yeah the menu on the wall is hard to read, but there are handheld versions available.
Greek fries. Â Worth the try for them alone.
Please DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME OR $$$ - eating here. Â I love good Greek food and this is not the place to get it.
If you enjoy bad attitudes from the staff, dirty tables, crappy service and terrible food - then stop in. Â Otherwise, be afraid, be very afraid!!!
Lynnette D. was generous with her review - we had a similar experience with several family members in our party getting poor quality meals and really bad attitudes from the staff.
From the outside, this place looks like a run down shack, but don't let that fool you. This goes with the saying "don't judge a book by its cover," because the food here is GREAT! They have delicious gyros and Greek fries (don't call them jo jos or else they will get on your case!). If you order the fries, you must get the omega sauce, it goes great with the fries!
I have been coming here for years, and this place looks even better now that they have remodeled. There are flat screens everywhere, and the bar is very cosy and nice. If your not into Gyros, they have a wide selections of sandwiches, and the Greek salad is great too! They even serve peanut butter and jelly sandwiches!
This is the only place I get gyros in Portland. Period!
So, I'm in here all the time for work, as D-Dish delivers for Mad Greek. Hell, I inspired a fit of panic in the guy behind the counter thinking he'd missed the memo on an order for him to make. No, it was just lil ol me being out there and in the mood for lunch!
I've been craving Greek fries and a sammich from here for a few weeks. And even though I've seen how big these sandwiches are, ambitious me decided to get a Mad Turkey. Four layers of turkey, three layers of cheese, a buttload of lettuce and tomatoe, with oil and vinegar dressing brushed on the bread. Also, it's served on a giant section of a loaf of sesame bread. I'm not even kidding, wrapped up on my to-go plate, it had to have been the size of my head. And I've got a big freaking head.
The Greek fries are uh-ma-zing. Get some Omega sauce for dipping, a large order of these bad boys could be filling enough for a meal in and of itself. Well, if you're cool with just eating potatoes as a meal!
Seriously though, this was a way too ambitious lunch for one sitting. I ate half the sandwich and half the fries and had to wrap them back up for later. The two of them together were about $10. Might seem pricey for lunch, but hell I've got lunch for tomorrow now too!
Have been twice so far and I really like the gyros!
the falafel I had was on the dry side, unfortunately. It made me wonder if they had made them waaay before I ordered them. The lamb souvlaki stick was a bit on the dry side as well. I was sad.
But, the mousaka was excellent! I was happy again!
The veggie dolamathes were good the first time we tried them but very good the second...I think there may have been a bit more lemon the second time around?
brother was a little put-off by the "strange" flavors in his Hellenic burger (it sounded good to me). But was very happy with a gyro.
the lamb gyros are where it's at!
and bf likes the Mad Greek IPA.
Had a nice big lunch here today. We arrived around 12:30 and it was busy but there were still tables to be had. We had a little ordering glitch when they ran out of spanikopita after they had taken my friend's order. So they came to our table, apologized profusely and got her an order of salad and calamari lickety-split. They even gave us some baklava on the house for the inconvenience!
I had the gold standard lunch special: Gyro and greek salad. It was terrific. The gyro was really tasty and sloppy and the salad had enough feta and olives to make it a salty delight. They also included "greek fries" which were new to me and pretty good.
The prices are all very reasonable. The ambiance is a bit grimy and loud but it didn't deter me from cleaning my plate.
I always drive by this place to and from Tanasbourne but never really took the time to stop by for food. I've always heard good things though.
I had a chicken gyro (no onions), greek fries with the omega sauce, and baklava to-go. Everything was delicious. The only thing I have to complain about is the inconsistency with the amount of sauce they put in their gyros. One gyro was overflowing with sauce which tends to be a bit annoying. Baklava could have been better also.
But service is great!
The Mad Greek has been one of my favorite occasional haunts for probably 25 years. Â It used to be sort of unkempt, but it was fun to get yelled at by the owner.
Me: I'd like the Mad Greek sandwich, but without olives.
Him (loudly, with a heavy accent): NO! Â If you order the Mad Greek, you get the Mad Greek. Â If you want something else, order the Mad American. Â You can have whatever you want on that one.
And asking for a pound of jo-jo's or spuds or tater wedges was tantamount to asking for a beating. Â They're Greek Fries! Â Or else!
So, the place is cleaner and friendlier now. Â The former is a welcome change. Â The latter, well... Â and the food is still really good.
Having grown up 5 minutes away, I have definitely seen the evolution of this place. Â It really was the MAD GREEK deli for years, but we kept coming back because the sandwiches were insanely good and the Greek fries are to die for. Â The Greeks aren't as angry-mad as they used to be, at least not to the customers. Â I always love a mad chicken, but a yorgo burger is good for days when I don't mind the thought of a heart attack.
They have really cleaned up the place over the years (it's been great for several) and it is a very pleasant spot to sit and enjoy your food.
There is a fast food Greek place that I won't even name here that is across 26, if you ever think you might want to go to the other place, don't. Â Drive the 10 extra minutes for real, really good Greek food here.
Yummiest gyro I've ever had! I ordered it with lamb and they added enough sauce to drown any unsuspecting cucumber! Â The Greek Salad was tasty, as I adore my kalamata olives, and did the trick of helping me feel I was eating a healthy meal. Â I also sampled a couple of the little desserts with lots of nuts and philo dough, which were a delicate but rich delight. Â Everything was pretty reasonably priced which also makes my wallet happy.
The lunch crowd is a little colorful and consisted mostly of the testosterone laden gender, but if you're femme fatales hankering for good Greek don't let that slow you down. Â The order of things is completely a secret and a new customer, like myself, could be completely turned off by it. Â Because of the rave reviews I have heard from friends, and fellow Yelpers I decided to give it a try and ramble my way through the ordering process. Â The food is WORTH IT, but with that atmosphere I'll take it to go next time.
Tip: Â Make sure you're paying attention when your order's up or they get feisty!
Tasty Greek food and tons of drinks.
My friends and I were quite impressed with the huge assortment of beer, wine and soft drinks in the store. You won't go thirsty.
The food is fresh, well prepared and full of flavor. I would recommend you go with one of the "Mad" specials, like the "Mad Chicken Sandwich". I was lame and got a gyro plate, and while it was tasty, I felt a bit envious of my friend and his sandwich. The portions are mid sized.
This is an order, come back for your food, eat it and then pay up front kind of place. Service was about as good as this rather hands off approach could be.
The restaurant, while having quite a bit of character, has kind of a shack-like feel to it. There are a half dozen or more tables and a decent sized parking lot out back.
Looking at the online menu (one star there - having an online menu that also includes prices is a good thing), I couldn't wait to try this place. We went on the hottest day of the summer assuming it would be cooler going out to eat than sitting at home, but there was no air conditioning, so this is all told through the lens of people who were uncomfortably hot.
We both had the Gyro Special - Gyro served with Greek salad and Greek fries (don't call them JoJo's or whatever Portlanders call them). Having a choice of vegetarian, beef, chicken or lamb was a nice touch.  We also had a couple of  Meat Dolamathes - Ground beef, rice and spices wrapped in a grape leaf. And we split a  Spanakopita - Spinach, feta cheese wrapped in flakey filo dough. And a little baklava with hazelnuts thingy - beware, the desserts sit right there and all look too yummy to not get one.
Off the bat I'll say that the extra $2.75 for Greek fries that neither of us liked (too much like JoJo's - why do Portlanders call them that?) and the bit of salad (which was good!) is not something we'll do again. Next time we'll just stick with the gyros alone. Even then, while the flavor was good and authentic, there was so very, very little meat compared to places back home in Chicago, that I still wouldn't feel like it was any kind of a deal. For this side of the country, it's still a decent gyro, though. All of the other little goodies we ordered on the side were delicious, too.
I'm tempted to remove another star for not having free re-fills because that kind of thing bothers me (or mostly bothers my boyfriend), but I'll just mention it and not remove a star because overall I really did like the place, and having an online menu makes up for it. Besides, the really large drink cup is pretty substantial if it's not such a hot day.
The atmosphere, aside from not being cool enough inside that particular day, was very deli-like and enjoyable. Just looking at the mural with the Greek Islands cooled me off (really, literally). I could get lost in that mural.
